      Sunrise at Moratinos

      9. august 2022, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We left Lédigos before 6am, in the dark, and didn't use the head torch. There were no clouds, and we took a moment to look at the stars. To be honest, they weren't that bright. There was a bit of village light and the first glows of the morning already showing. But I got to see some of the northern constellations, which I'm not at all familiar with, and a couple of meteorites (shooting stars).
Sunrise came when we were ordering breakfast at Moratinos. The 3rd photo, showing a hill with small openings that look like hobbit houses (you may need to enlarge) was across the road from the cafe. We learnt that they are wine cellars! The Spaniards take their wine very seriously!
The other photos show examples of mud walls found in the same town.

More than 1/2 way to Santiago!

      15. oktober 2022, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We walked and uneventful 10k to the small city of Sahagun. Some where east if the city, approximately 383.5 kilometer mark we crossed the half way point of our walk.

Later we passed through two statues claiming to be the mid-point.

Another couple of kilometers and we walked into Sahagun, our stop for today. 22 kilometers total

      Day 23 - Moratinos

      28. september 2023, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Very different day, today we made our first big mistake. It was going to be about a 10 mile walk. We stopped in a small town to get our Camino passport stamped and to have a refreshment, our final stop was just under 2 miles away. Well, when we got to the next town we realized we made a big mistake.

Make sure to watch both videos to catch what happened. Overall we walked around 12 miles.

      Bercianos del Real Camino

      10. september 2019, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Day 20 - Ledigos to Bercianos

      9. september 2023, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

I’ve been pretty neglectful in updating my footprints since I got sick. One more day of antibiotics to go, and feeling better while simultaneously fighting competing infections. I’m going to try to back post for the last 10 days or so, but it could take a while.

A little over a week ago, I received a message from the hostel I’d booked in Bercianos warning me about a festival on the night of my arrival. Schedules being what they are, I kept my reservation.

I started this morning just after 7 from the lovely La Morena hostel in Ledigos. I walked out under cool temperatures with bolts of lighting lighting up the distant sky. I passed through Terradillos de Los Templarios, a town which obviously embraces its Templar history.

Last night I got a message from my Mom asking for more landscape pictures. The truth is, in the meseta the landscape doesn’t really change. It’s a long gravel path, which you can see for kilometers, surrounded by brown fields if harvested wheat, dying sunflowers, and newly tilled fields. But, yeah, I took pictures for her anyway…

The highlight of the day was the arrival in Sahagun - the geographical halfway point of the Camino Frances. In reality, I passed the halfway point yesterday - but it was still nice to take pictures at the monument and collect my halfway certificate as well!

Another ten kilometers lay before me after Sahagun, but fortunately clouds filled the sky and along with a cool breeze it made the walking quite lovely. I listened to an audiobook as the kilometers ticked away.

I arrived in Bercianos mid-afternoon to find my pilgrim hostel filled up with locals drinking at the bar. I’m not sure what this festival is - something about music? But as the email suggested, it’s a bit loud - and the music hasn’t even started yet!

I was happy to find Jeanette and Betina at the hostel - so we raised a glass and ate pizza in celebration of our accomplishments! 26k for today - so feeling a bit worn, but no doubt ready to tackle what tomorrow will bring!

      Reliegos !!

      27. april 2023, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

Today was a challenge ! I ended up walking a marathon - 42km ! In doing so, i put myself one full day ahead of schedule. So I now have time to squeeze in a rest day where I need one (which I might need after today 😅), or end up spending an extra day in Leon or Santiago! Besides the last two or so miles, I wasn’t feeling too bad, likely thanks to amazing home-cooked Italian meal I had at my albergue last night. 😂 also, for some reason it is only letting me upload 10 pictures lately, rather than the usual 20 :(Les mer

      To Moratinos

      21. september 2023, Spania ⋅ 🌙 54 °F

      September 21

We have had some long days and our bodies were feeling it! So…because it was supposed to rain today, we took a taxi to Calzadilla de la Cueza (saving 17 k). Boy did it rain and blow! Alan wore his new poncho and I looked lovely in my rain skirt and jacket. We would not have won any beauty contests, that’s for sure! 😂

Paul and Mirabelle walked very fast to meet us in Ledigos for lunch and by then (thank goodness), the rain was done. We met a very nice old man at the bar. He didn’t speak English and we know very little Spanish, but he communicated his wish for us to have a good Camino (buen Camino) and then told us to eat the bocadillo for fuel for our Camino walk.💕 He’s just an example of how kind the local people are. They go out of their way to wish us well or point us in the right direction. 🙂

We are staying at Albergue San Bruno tonight. It is owned by an Italian couple so tonight’s dinner had an Italian touch. I really enjoy the communal pilgrim meals. It’s fascinating listening to the different languages and watching how we all communicate. It’s a good thing. 🌍💕

Our shorter day today combined with another short day to Sahagun tomorrow should help our bodies recover a bit, and walking and visiting with Mirabelle and Paul is just icing on the cake! 🙂

      67. Wandertag

      5. juni 2023, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

      8. oktober 2023, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

On paper, today was an easy day, only about 21 kilometers, but I was feeling it a little more. Still, a good day, and beautiful landscape. We are staying in an albergue run by the Marist Fathers, and we were greeted so warmly and have been so well cared for, including a Mass in English and Spanish offered by an Irish priest who also led a discussion for those who were interested in talking about our experience thus far. It was nice to have a chance to process!

On the way today we also passed through the official halfway point, two statues which, if you walk between them, are said to convey all the benefits of the full Camino in case you aren’t able to make it all the way to Santiago. A little insurance policy!

      More dampness

      19. oktober 2023, Spania ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Most of which was not captured as thought my phone might get waterlogged within 0.2 seconds of taking it out but did get notable highlights of Derek's poncho pregnancy and Aussie Alex's snap of the iconic three quarter length parachute waterproof trousers and the ultimate wet *slop* soundLes mer
