More than 1/2 way to Santiago!

      October 15, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We walked and uneventful 10k to the small city of Sahagun. Some where east if the city, approximately 383.5 kilometer mark we crossed the half way point of our walk.

Later we passed through two statues claiming to be the mid-point.

Another couple of kilometers and we walked into Sahagun, our stop for today. 22 kilometers total

      Sunrise at Moratinos

      August 9, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We left Lédigos before 6am, in the dark, and didn't use the head torch. There were no clouds, and we took a moment to look at the stars. To be honest, they weren't that bright. There was a bit of village light and the first glows of the morning already showing. But I got to see some of the northern constellations, which I'm not at all familiar with, and a couple of meteorites (shooting stars).
Sunrise came when we were ordering breakfast at Moratinos. The 3rd photo, showing a hill with small openings that look like hobbit houses (you may need to enlarge) was across the road from the cafe. We learnt that they are wine cellars! The Spaniards take their wine very seriously!
The other photos show examples of mud walls found in the same town.

      Day 16 not walking!

      May 25 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

So I took a taxi by myself in the end, another chap was planning to go with me, he’s resting due to losing toe nail, but he was too unwell to travel. We’ve been refilling our water bottles from bought mineral water and just today several people have complained of upset tums, so we’ll be continuing our safer strategy!
So I’ve checked into modern purpose built Albergue in Terradillos de los Templarios, obviously linked the Templar Knights. We have private twin room 😊
One of the surprises to me, has been the mix of nationalities walking the Camino, prob approx 1/3 are from the East (Asia or the Orient), another 1/3 from America and last 1/3 from Europe, with scattering of antipodeans too! All seem willing to help others, although it’s very tricky when there is no common language and the culture is so different as we’ve seen with the Koreans. So there is good camaraderie and we do keep bumping into same people in different places or en route! One of the challenges in sharing a dorm is that a lot of people like to get up and start walking very early, and although they make an effort to be quiet, 3/4 of our dorm had left before 6am this morning!!!
So my toe is improving every day and I did 5km test walk locally after I checked in, it feels ok but doesn’t look great, so I’m little unsure when to start walking again.

      Reliegos !!

      April 27, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

Today was a challenge ! I ended up walking a marathon - 42km ! In doing so, i put myself one full day ahead of schedule. So I now have time to squeeze in a rest day where I need one (which I might need after today 😅), or end up spending an extra day in Leon or Santiago! Besides the last two or so miles, I wasn’t feeling too bad, likely thanks to amazing home-cooked Italian meal I had at my albergue last night. 😂 also, for some reason it is only letting me upload 10 pictures lately, rather than the usual 20 :(Read more

      To Moratinos

      September 21, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 54 °F

      September 21

We have had some long days and our bodies were feeling it! So…because it was supposed to rain today, we took a taxi to Calzadilla de la Cueza (saving 17 k). Boy did it rain and blow! Alan wore his new poncho and I looked lovely in my rain skirt and jacket. We would not have won any beauty contests, that’s for sure! 😂

Paul and Mirabelle walked very fast to meet us in Ledigos for lunch and by then (thank goodness), the rain was done. We met a very nice old man at the bar. He didn’t speak English and we know very little Spanish, but he communicated his wish for us to have a good Camino (buen Camino) and then told us to eat the bocadillo for fuel for our Camino walk.💕 He’s just an example of how kind the local people are. They go out of their way to wish us well or point us in the right direction. 🙂

We are staying at Albergue San Bruno tonight. It is owned by an Italian couple so tonight’s dinner had an Italian touch. I really enjoy the communal pilgrim meals. It’s fascinating listening to the different languages and watching how we all communicate. It’s a good thing. 🌍💕

Our shorter day today combined with another short day to Sahagun tomorrow should help our bodies recover a bit, and walking and visiting with Mirabelle and Paul is just icing on the cake! 🙂

      67. Wandertag

      June 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

      October 8, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

On paper, today was an easy day, only about 21 kilometers, but I was feeling it a little more. Still, a good day, and beautiful landscape. We are staying in an albergue run by the Marist Fathers, and we were greeted so warmly and have been so well cared for, including a Mass in English and Spanish offered by an Irish priest who also led a discussion for those who were interested in talking about our experience thus far. It was nice to have a chance to process!

On the way today we also passed through the official halfway point, two statues which, if you walk between them, are said to convey all the benefits of the full Camino in case you aren’t able to make it all the way to Santiago. A little insurance policy!

      Bercianos del Real Camino

      September 10, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Fühlt sich sehr gut an.Read more

      More dampness

      October 19, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Most of which was not captured as thought my phone might get waterlogged within 0.2 seconds of taking it out but did get notable highlights of Derek's poncho pregnancy and Aussie Alex's snap of the iconic three quarter length parachute waterproof trousers and the ultimate wet *slop* soundRead more

      Ledigos to Sahagún

      May 24, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Started after 9am today. Only a short walk so no hurry. Weather was great. Walked through some wee villages. Terradillos de.los Templarios, Moratinos, San Nicolas del Real Camino. There are more words in the village names than residents in some of these places.Read more
