Day 6 Gernika to Bilbao 146.95 km

      September 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

This was a day of very rough trail conditions ....mud and rocks!

Before I explain I want to let you know that every day I see a black cat🥺 Today it was a ceramic one in a shop I passed this am....Harley's spirit♥️

Great day and only saw maybe 6 pilgrims total.
I have taken shots of the different trail surfaces to give you an idea of what we walk on.
We went through a forest that had used heavy equipment.

Trees today were eucalyptus and pine. Some pine trees are dying and I wonder if they have pine beetle here??

We didn't go thru any towns.
About 12 km in A lady had a stand by the edge of the road with fresh fruit, nuts ( freshly roasted off their trees) .What a treat!!!

I also saw my first fig tree today!
      Very hot High 20's.

I have added on a better map of the stage I walked as the one on my Garmin isn't great.

Took the train to Bilbao from Lemaza as there was no place to stay there or on the next stage.

Oh and I tried my first pinxto. They are like tappas.

I lost my sunglasses but got another pair luckily🤗

      Logrono 🚝 Bilbao

      May 7, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Rus dag vandag was bitter soet. Maandag begin ek so te sê oor.Read more

      Bilbao

      March 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

      May 18, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Read more

      Bilbao

      May 17, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

      Bilbao = Guggenheim Museum.
Sorry for that equation, there is definitely more to the city than just one building! But this was the purpose of our short visit.
Just wished to lay our eyes on one of the most influential modern architecture. The building was bigger than expected.

An interesting-looking exhibition going on at the time of visit - https://www.guggenheim-bilbao.eus/exhibitions/m…

Unfortunately 30 mins until closing time did not look promising for a fulfilling visit, so we decided to skip it.

      Bilbo Bilbao Beutlin

      May 13, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

      September 25, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

      Bilbao

      August 29, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Andrew and I arrived yesterday to enjoy a couple of days here before Margaret and Claire join us and we start our walk on Thursday.
The journey started inauspiciously with Andrew dropping the house keys through a gap in the decking so Donna and Chris, who are house sitting, will have to take the terrace to pieces before they can get in. We decided to walk to the station as it is traditional to start a pilgrimage from your home. It was a lovely walk along the towpath but we arrived to find the train cancelled. Luckily a replacement bus turned up and took us to Watford where we were able to resume our journey as planned. It all ran very smoothly from then on despite a slight panic when I struggled to open my nhs app to view my Covid pass and couldn’t find the email with the details of how to get into the apartment. After a short wander round the local area we found a bar and ate suckling lamb which was delicious. (My apologies to any vegetarian/vegans. )Read more

      Bilbao

      August 16, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Day Five: Dirt in Gernika to Bilbao

      August 3, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

I barely slept last night. But was in good enough company. Despite enjoying the large group we thought it might be best to split up and walk in smaller groups. I began walking alone in the dark, and that messes with your head. I dont think there are any animals here that would do anything but the forest in the pitch black likes to play with your mind. It wasnt long before i caught up to Sam and Everette, two americans who were traveling together. We walked together for nearly 4 hours chatting about life and social issues. Eventually i decided i needed a bit of time to my self so i walked on ahead. There was a lot of pavement walking this day. Even though it made the path smoother the road is quite jaring on the feet especially the long descent down into Bilbao. Bilbao is a city almost on the ocean, a river runs through it the ebs slightly by the tide despite the ocean being about 20km away. A few of us had decided to meet up in Bilbao to find a hostels together. When I got into town i got a call from James and Andrew, we met after some time and booked a hostel. After lunch we had the most agonizing check in process ever. After a nap we set out to meet some others, the two girls from Madrid and three brothers from the south of spain were finishing in Bilbao. The night was so much fun although I was upset that we never found anywhere to dance. Unfortunately, I ended up having a bit of a rough night and require just a little bit of assistance from James, Everette, and Sam to get back to the hostel. But i think everyone enjoyed themselves well enough!Read more
