      Walk to Pamplona

      13 september 2023, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

A little bit of everything today, including wooded paths along the river, inclines out in the open, cafes for pilgrims, and of course the streets of Pamplona, beginning with the ancient Puenta de Magdalena.

All the right parts of us were either full or empty when we started out (😉), which helped us make good time. Got a little cocky thinking we had shaved an hour off the walk and then realized we had only arrived at essentially a suburb of Pamplona and had another hour to go. Still, we got to the city in time for the back end of the lunch scene. I resisted getting yet another jamon y queso, opting for other pintxos (tapas, in Basque) instead.

It's hard to want to walk around a hilly city when you've spent 13 mi on your feet to get there but we saw a few key sites, got our pilgrim stamp and enjoyed *una copa de vino tinto, por favor* at Ernest Hemingway's hang. Apparently, our tiny hotel room overlooks the street where the bulls run, so we're glad to see it but not be here when that happens!

      Rest day in Pamplona

      17 september 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

It was wonderful this morning to wake up knowing we could have a lie in and rest our slightly tired legs even though they have a long way to go!
We had a late breakfast , pastries cafe con leche and a freshly squeezed orange juice which they do beautifully over here. Then it was find a laundromat and let the men set to work. Lee took over the laundry duties where he was making new friends in the laundromat as you do.
Jane Brian and I walked the old walls and city of Pamplona , visited a slightly strange art exhibition and enjoyed a quiet Sunday morning strolling through the parks and streets .
We all then went to a famous Pamplona cafe Iruna where Earnest Hemmingway wrote his books and its a totally beautiful cafe. We decided to splurge out on a $50.00 per person 3 course meal with 2 bottles of Spanish wine. So after a long lunch enjoying the food wine and ambience it was decided we had to find an Irish bar to watch the Aus Fiji game. After walking for 30 minutes we finally found the bar to discover that they would not be playing the rugby! Big sighs all round but managed to get back to the hotel to find a bar just along and where Brian persuaded the bar men to change the channel from Football to rugby!
What a game and in the end most of the bar were watching it with us!
Now it's early bed with a 25 km walk tomorrow and quite a climb ahead. All in happy spirits. Buen camino

King in the castle ooh la la

      29 mars, Spanien ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

I've felt strange not walking today, which is an example of how worryingly quickly we adapt to situations.

I was in two minds about staying an extra night, but discovering an unexpected bath on check in pulled me right out of that.

As a result of the LIES I have a bunch of provisions I don't want to carry tomorrow so I've been diligently working my way through, from the bathtub and the bed. It's hard work but it's honest, you know?

      Pamplona

      8 maj, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

😱 busture i Pamplona!
Dejligt sted at holde middagspause.

      Flamenco music in Pamplona

      26 augusti 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

When we passed through Pamplona, all of a sudden we ended up in a huge crowd of people. None of us had any idea what was going on, so it is good I speak a little Spanish and could ask the local people. It turned out to be one of the best flamenco guitar players from Spain where going to start their performance on the center square. Worth while to take a look.Läs mer

      Zubiri til Pamplona

      15 april 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

      Day 0 Pamplona

      15 maj 2023, Spanien

      At a glance:

Kilometres walked: 12.03 going in circles
      # of steps: 15,291
      Elevation gain: 0
Food highlights: Tapas or pinxos! And cafe con leché and croissants.
Highlight: My favorite cafe, Cafe Iruña which was Hemingways favorite cafe too. And seeing Plaza des Toros where the bulls start their run.
We are here to figure out a Plan B and C. The once-a-day bus from Psmplona to St Jean Pied du Port is full! Plan B is to take the once a day bus to Ronsevalles, then take a taxi down the Pyrenees. Plan C is to hang around the bus station and pick up two more stranded pilgrims and share a taxi to St JPdP. Plan B is cheaper so we will do that first.
They have modernized this city in a way that keeps the old roads for pedestrians. Vehicle deliveries seem to be allowed before 10 a.m. and all parking of cars is below ground hidden from view, including the bus station. Check out the modern glass entrance to the station.
Meanwhile we took a walk along the ramparts (wall? My castle terminology is s bit rusty) of the medieval town, walked around the bull ring, took a photo of the Hemmingway monument which basically said he was an honorable party goer, and stopped in at the cathedral and the city archives where we walked around a wooden model of what the city looked like in 1920.
Plan B seems to be working. We are sitting on a bench infront of the Roncesvalles bus and are third in line.
Update. Plan B working. Teamed up with two women from Croatia . We phoned 6 taxi companies and the last one could take us...in an hour so we are waiting.
It worked. Once in St. Jean Pied du Port we headed to our lodging and then out to get our Camino credentials stamped to mark our official start, then bought walking poles. We felt we were ready to begin to walk the Camino.
We ran into the two Croatian women again at our albergue. They hadn't found a vacancy and it was now after 7pm. It was raining and 7pm is late to be looking for accomodation.
We're not sure what happened to them.

      Trip to Pamplona

      23 juni 2022, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

After a cryfull and hectic morning (that’s what happens when there are some other important things one need to take care of, this case it was Neringa taking her test for a new contract at the EEA), David with the kids managed to exit the hotel for a play hour in the hotel’s playground and a morning swim. After Neringa’s business, we started the trip to Pamplona. We stopped for lunch in a village called Alegria (which means happiness) and we found not much happiness there. In one of the best rated restaurants (4.5 in Google) we were welcomed by pointing at a table for two, followed with a surprised question whether the kids will also eat. Then with a sigh the waitress prepared us the table for four but appetite for that place was gone. So we decided to leave and find a worse rated restaurant 😅
So we did and had a nothing special menu del día. Then some more road and unloading in the Center of Pamplona under special permission to enter the city for 30 min not earlier than 17h00…
The evening programme was the best, meeting the old dear friend from Brussels time Isabel and her beautiful family. She was the reason for us to visit Pamplona and she will be at the centre of our programme for the coming days.

      Plaza del Castillo

      1 mars 2023, Spanien
