      raining day

      Los gings heute schon kurz nach 8:00- ohne Frühstück... Es sprühregnet vor sich hin und die schöne Landschaft ist mit einem grauen Schleier bedeckt. Wir kommen gut voran, finden eine offene Bar und Nachmittags beginnt der Wettlauf mit dem Gewitter 💦 Inzwischen ist der Himmel wieder blau und wir freuen uns auf den Abend im schönen Ribadesella🍹🍻🥘...Lue lisää

      Vera the dog

      Ana lost her partner suddenly a couple of years ago. They had both loved walking Camino routes and so last year she opened a hostel. I was so lucky to stay there last night as she creates a great atmosphere and brings out the best in people. I laughed so much I was a giggling wreck by the time I went to bed. Anyway, a guy was there who had walked all the way from Switzerland with his dog, Vera! They hadn't walked in a straight line either. He wanted to visit Lourdes so they did that before walking along the Pyrenees until they reached the Atlantic. They have been walking for three months now! Vera was the star attraction, everyone loved her. I also met a lawyer who works to stop people on death row in the USA being executed. I felt so humbled. She is walking here because, unsurprisingly, she needs a complete rest. She has links with Manchester University and, as a result, is a big Huddersfield Town fan!

      I also walked through Poo today. Nobody else got the joke! I really needed an English speaker around.

      Ribadesella to Colunga, Spain

      Nice day passing little beaches and quaint villages that were definitely old, old Spain. We were walking mainly on dirt paths through forested areas, a little pavement, but not too much. 20+Km/12.78 miles is what the watch says. Tonight we are in Colunga, a small village, where we are staying in an adorable pension. The proprietress exudes pride in her little place with attached bar/restaurant. The room is charming and comfortable. I’m finding I am appreciative of the little things, I noticed a little refrigerator in the room, opened it up, my eyes lit up and I said, “Holly, look, there’s COLD water in the fridge!!”. Cold water is gold. Not only to have a refrigerator in our room, but to have a place to keep our water cold at night, absolutely first class!! Our laundry is doing it’s thing next door and we are enjoying a glass of wine before figuring out dinner and relaxing in that room of ours. There is a tub in the room, while I’ve already showered, I’m having thoughts of a nice bath later. Get it while I can.
      Today we met a man and his adult daughter from Nebraska. Sweet people, we ended up having lunch with them at a really cool outdoor beach restaurant. Best looking tacos I have seen in Spain and I finally got my pizza fix! It was nice to easily speak English with people. I remember whenever Nathalie or Luba would meet someone who spoke their native language, they were always excited to talk to them, I see why. It’s easy. It flows. You hear home. Missing home, my people, and of course my crazy dog, but I am absolutely loving this too. I feel fortunate, even during the moments of unbearable heat and endless roads.
      Today a tour bus of about 15 Koreans were dropped off on the trail with their clean shoes, and fresh legs (every inch of their skin covered of course-wouldn’t want to look like they are “lower class” with tanned skin, indicating they worked the fields). They mostly had a quick pace until they’d stop to take a photo every 5 minutes and slow down. There was no consistency to their stride, so we were passing and following them all day..until they got to Colunga and boarded their big air conditioned bus. Maybe I’m doing this wrong!!
      From what I’ve seen of Colunga so far it is pretty unimpressive, but honestly I prefer the smaller villages to the cities. They are easy. Finding a laundromat, food, supplies, easy. I left my shampoo & conditioner in Santander in the shower, so I found a salon and bought some more. Talk about cheap. Really good brand and it totaled about €30. I would’ve paid 3 times that at home for this brand. Our exchange is very close, unlike in the past where coming here was quite a bit more expensive. Laundry is about done, so off we go. Love and miss you my friends and family, talk tomorrow ❤️      Lue lisää

      Auf dem Weg nach Covadonga

      Auf dem Weg nach Covadonga fahren wir eine Traumroute, immer entlang des Nationalparks. Wir erreichen "Puerto del Pontón". Von einer Aussichtsplattform genießen wir die Umgebung. Diese ist sehr schön angelegt, auch als Rastplatz zu nutzen. Gestern war so ein Tag, den man nicht vergißt. Heute werden wir unser kleines Bergdorf verlassen. Wir wollen von Norden her noch einmal in den Nationalpark "Picos de Europa". Auf geht's 👍Wir fahren stundenlang am Rande des Nationalparks entlang. Immer wieder bieten sich uns wunderschöne Panoramen an, die zu einer Rast einladen👍😊Lue lisää

      Schlafen vor dem Bahnhof

      Heute habe ich die Stadt Llanos erkundet! Viele kleine Läden, viele Menschen. Ich war früh so hatte ich das Glück einen geschützten 24 Std PP für 3 Euro zu finden.
      Doch von der Stadt habe ich nach 3 Stunden genug gesehen und fahre weiter westwärts. .
      Gehe nochmal eine Stunde an eine kleine Beach, leider ist diese ist nicht sehr einladend zum Baden. Sie hat sehr wenig Wasser ist ziemlich flach und vom Meer ist nichts zu sehen.
      Ich fahre weiter und entdecke eingangs Ribadesella einen Camper Stellplatz beim Bahnhof. Wenn ich hier bleiben kann, will, muss ich jetzt alles einrichten um unten zu schlafen. Campen ist nicht erlaubt, dafür gratis. Kein Problem bin ja dafür eingerichtet.
      Mache noch einen langen Stadtbummel und dann versuche ich hier eine ruhige Nacht zu verbringen.      Lue lisää

      Ribadesella

      Caught the early train to Ribadesella, only two carriages and two Euros. We made our way west along the coast slowly, through villages and farms with the coast on one side and spectacular mountains on the other. It was really misty and quite eerie. The fishermen were having beer and coffee and I joined them by the wharf. I climbed to an old fort and the view of the coast and port were beautiful with the sun trying to make it thru the clouds. Walking back to the train, because I wanted to do a 15 km walk not a 35 km slog, I came upon a Vespa rally which was a hoot. Then caught the train, hopped off at a tiny wayside stop and prayed my Apple Maps would help me find my way back to Llanes. The coastline was fantastic and some of the tiny coves were people free, but others were so crowded I couldn’t understand the pleasure of being there. But it was a brilliant day only spoiled by the most disgusting meal ever, which turned out to be squid in its own dye!!!! Ah well, but I still loved my stay on the coast.Lue lisää

      Ribadesella

      Hole heute den gestrigen Tag nach, war einfach zu müde und hatte Schmerzen im Knie.
      Gestern hatten wir einen wunderschönen Abschnitt , Steilküste zu gehen, Aussicht ein Traum, wollten am Berg neben einer alten Kirche nächtigen, doch wir hatten wieder Mal kein Essen gefunden zu kaufen, also beschlossen wir 10 km weiter zu gehen an den Strand nach Ribadesello.Dort trafen wir Sandra und Anita aus München, Jakobs aus Niederlande , 76 Jahre, Daniel aus D und feierten Abschied, da Anita und Sandra heute nach Hause fliegen. Elise aus Madrid kam auch noch dazu, die fliegt morgen nach Hause, so tranken wir Wein am Strand und dann ins Hotel, wo ich mein Knie etwas pflegte und noch rasch etwas ass, was ich vorher noch kaufen könnte.Lue lisää

      123. Etappe: Poo / Ribadesella

      Zunächst startete der Tag sonnig und es gab so manche Steilküste und Bufons (Meereswassergeysire) zu bewundern und so einige Kuhherden zu durchqueren.
      Mittags setzte leider der Regen ein und hielt an. Völlig durchnässt aber glücklich erreichte ich zusammen mit einer Pilgerin aus der Schweiz die angestrebte Pilgerherberge. Doch leider mussten wir erfahren, dass diese in diesem Winter zum ersten Mal geschlossen hat. Eine Alternative gab es im Ort leider nicht, die nächste offene Herberge war ca. 17 km entfernt - um 17:30 ein wenig zu weit für uns., um noch im Hellen anzukommen. Also entschlossen wir uns nach einer kurzen Krisensitzung mit Wein, Pinchos und Fußball in der örtlichen Dorfkneipe dem Rat des Hospitalieros zu folgen und den Zug zu nehmen. Damit wir nicht wieder vor verschlossener Türe stehen, rief ich vorsichtshalber an und eine nette Frau sagte mir, dass sie noch 2 Plätze in ihrer privaten Herberge frei hat. Erleichtert ging es also mit dem Zug weiter und so bin ich heute schon in Ribadesella, wo ich eigentlich erst morgen sein wollte.
      Für morgen bin ich mir noch nicht sicher wie es weitergeht, ob ich wieder zum Ausgangspunkt zurückfahre und ein zweites Mal in Ribadesella übernachte. Das entscheide ich spontan beim Frühstück 😊      Lue lisää

      Covadonga

      Und dann erreichten wir Covadonga. Das Heiligtum von Covadonga besteht aus einer Grotte mit der heiligen Jungfrau, die in Spanien als La Santina bekannt ist. Daneben das Grab des Königs Pelayo, seiner Frau sowie seines Nachfolgers Alfonso I. von Asturien. Das zweite Highlight hier ist die neoromanische Basilika Santa María la Real de Covadonga, die im Jahre 1901 eingeweiht wurde. Eine schmale Bergstraße führt von Covadonga aus hinauf in eines der schönsten Gebiete der Picos de Europa mit dem Gletscherseen Lago Enol und Lago de la Ercina in einer Höhe von über 1.000 Metern. Wir hatten uns so darauf gefreut. Wegen Massenandrangs war das Gebiet jedoch für den restlichen Tag gesperrt. Osterferien in Spanien - die hatten wir bei unseren Vorbereitungen nicht bedacht.       Llanes to Ribadesella

      After a rest day in Llanes exploring this lovely coastal city, we set off on the longest day we have planned on this Camino. We have a 30 km day ahead of us and neither of us is particularly looking forward to it, our preferred km range is between 15-20 km. Anyway, we leave our lovely accommodation at 7:00 am, it is dark and we don’t have headlamps (we sent them back home thinking we wouldn’t need them 🤦‍♀️). It doesn’t take our eyes long to adjust, we start our walk in Llanes and soon enough have reached the outskirts of town, this first stretch has small villages spaced around 3 km apart which helps to make us feel like we are making progress. Llanes was still sleeping when we left this morning so we haven’t eaten or had our morning coffee, we keep our eyes peeled for an open bar, but it won’t be until around 11:00 am that we will come across one, when we do, we sit for a solid half hour enjoying this morning ritual. The weather is changeable, our rain jackets are on and off regularly throughout the day. We have a bit of everything on our walk today from beautiful coastal walking along the headlands, to forest and rural dirt roads and paths with ascents and descents. We have noticed that the Camino path in Asturias is not as well marked as in previous regions, the markers are less frequent and it is pretty easy to get off trail, today is not the day we want to be adding more distance to our walk though, so we are vigilant at checking our maps and watching for markers. We stop at a supermacado in Nueva and buy some rolls, ham and cheese, we will find a place to have a little picnic on the way today. We end up walking around 3 km before we come across a spot where we can sit, make and eat our lunch, it’s someone’s land right beside the dirt road we are walking on, but it’s past 1:00 pm and we are both buggered, hungry and our bodies are feeling broken. We throw our rain jackets on the ground and fall onto them, we make our lunch, remove our shoes and socks and try to find a comfortable position to rest in, the whole time wondering how we are going to get up and keep walking for the next few hours…. But it’s amazing what food, water, rest and a little foot massage will do for you, we have taken our time and we are both ready to tackle the final 9 kms of our day. We finally get into Ribadesella feeling broken, it is very hot now, we are unable to book into our accommodation until 5:00 pm, so we wait out our time at a bar just down the road from where we are staying, there is a park right near the bar with lots of families enjoying the green space with their kids, it’s lovely to watch and hear all the laughter and fun times these families are having together. We finally check into our apartment, we shower, go to the supermacado to get food for dinner, then we eat and call it a night, we are both exhausted and in need of rest. Fingers crossed we are able to get out of bed in the morning and continue walking….Lue lisää
