      16. Etappe: Llanes - Ribadesella

      May 21, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

      Ribadesella to Colunga, Spain

      September 14, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

Nice day passing little beaches and quaint villages that were definitely old, old Spain. We were walking mainly on dirt paths through forested areas, a little pavement, but not too much. 20+Km/12.78 miles is what the watch says. Tonight we are in Colunga, a small village, where we are staying in an adorable pension. The proprietress exudes pride in her little place with attached bar/restaurant. The room is charming and comfortable. I’m finding I am appreciative of the little things, I noticed a little refrigerator in the room, opened it up, my eyes lit up and I said, “Holly, look, there’s COLD water in the fridge!!”. Cold water is gold. Not only to have a refrigerator in our room, but to have a place to keep our water cold at night, absolutely first class!! Our laundry is doing it’s thing next door and we are enjoying a glass of wine before figuring out dinner and relaxing in that room of ours. There is a tub in the room, while I’ve already showered, I’m having thoughts of a nice bath later. Get it while I can.
Today we met a man and his adult daughter from Nebraska. Sweet people, we ended up having lunch with them at a really cool outdoor beach restaurant. Best looking tacos I have seen in Spain and I finally got my pizza fix! It was nice to easily speak English with people. I remember whenever Nathalie or Luba would meet someone who spoke their native language, they were always excited to talk to them, I see why. It’s easy. It flows. You hear home. Missing home, my people, and of course my crazy dog, but I am absolutely loving this too. I feel fortunate, even during the moments of unbearable heat and endless roads.
Today a tour bus of about 15 Koreans were dropped off on the trail with their clean shoes, and fresh legs (every inch of their skin covered of course-wouldn’t want to look like they are “lower class” with tanned skin, indicating they worked the fields). They mostly had a quick pace until they’d stop to take a photo every 5 minutes and slow down. There was no consistency to their stride, so we were passing and following them all day..until they got to Colunga and boarded their big air conditioned bus. Maybe I’m doing this wrong!!
From what I’ve seen of Colunga so far it is pretty unimpressive, but honestly I prefer the smaller villages to the cities. They are easy. Finding a laundromat, food, supplies, easy. I left my shampoo & conditioner in Santander in the shower, so I found a salon and bought some more. Talk about cheap. Really good brand and it totaled about €30. I would’ve paid 3 times that at home for this brand. Our exchange is very close, unlike in the past where coming here was quite a bit more expensive. Laundry is about done, so off we go. Love and miss you my friends and family, talk tomorrow ❤️

      Vera the dog

      October 3, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Ana lost her partner suddenly a couple of years ago. They had both loved walking Camino routes and so last year she opened a hostel. I was so lucky to stay there last night as she creates a great atmosphere and brings out the best in people. I laughed so much I was a giggling wreck by the time I went to bed. Anyway, a guy was there who had walked all the way from Switzerland with his dog, Vera! They hadn't walked in a straight line either. He wanted to visit Lourdes so they did that before walking along the Pyrenees until they reached the Atlantic. They have been walking for three months now! Vera was the star attraction, everyone loved her. I also met a lawyer who works to stop people on death row in the USA being executed. I felt so humbled. She is walking here because, unsurprisingly, she needs a complete rest. She has links with Manchester University and, as a result, is a big Huddersfield Town fan!

I also walked through Poo today. Nobody else got the joke! I really needed an English speaker around.

Photos - the lovely Vera with her rucksack...Poo station...sound on for the acoustics at Bufones de Arenillas (I thought it sounded like a giant breathing)...not how the English tend to think of Spain but I love it... Ana's hostel.

      Ribadesella

      June 26 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

This is a pretty town that straddles two sides of the river and lies next to the coastline. Today’s walk was relatively short, 8 miles officially. But true to form, I added miles by not paying close attention to directions. I had the wrong address for the hotel, and without really checking, I walked across the bridge and down a road for about 1.5 miles before realizing it was not right. This was at the end of my day, and I had planned my lunch break so I could arrive at my check in time of 3.00. Foiled! I had to trudge all the way back to the bridge and cross, then walk through town in the opposite direction, then - to my utter disgust and dismay - up a never ending line of stairs to my hotel high above the town. It was a long day after all! Finished off with a delicious pizza and beer. Now, I’m listening to a lovely soft rain outside.

I failed to post yesterday from Nueva, but the walk was quite pretty with a nice café on a sweet beach. My best morning coffee yet. Nueva was a small unexciting town. I had a comfortable room in a Pensión, but probably should have planned to walk to Ribadesella in one day! Next stop, Colunga.

Day 63 - Llanes to Ribedesella

      June 23 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

After a sleepless night due to party city in Llanes, singing folk at 6 in the morning- long time since we were part of that 😆 we huffed and puffed through the night marvelling at the energy of others! We struggled into the day ready for a fight for the toilet - however all was surprisingly calm.
We headed out and found a very well organised bakery which provided us with a lovely breakfast.
We got talking to a couple of American pilgrims who were on their third Camino - they were addicted- and were having an amazing tromp around Europe as well.
We then packed up to head for the railway station. Our train came in and we boarded only to be told to disembark as the train was returning to Santander. Our actual train arrived 10 mins later, and we all squeezed on. Journey was just over half an hour.
We headed for our Pension for the evening to discover they didn’t have us on the list 🙄
As the error was theirs they had to find alternative accommodation for us!!
This happened to be a 1912 art deco hotel with very nice rooms and a fantastic view across the harbour, marina and misty hills - a win win 🙌
After settling into our new abode we headed out for our lunch scene. It was a bit of a school dinner scene but we enjoyed it. We got in just in time as within minutes the queue was out the door.
We enjoyed ‘Granny’s rice pudding’ even though it was a bit sweet.
We then enjoyed a good promenade along the harbour and breakwater getting good sea air.
We are now back in our lovely room. Chilling ready for tomorrow’s 20k

      The best day yet

      June 9 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Today was the longest, hardest, and most beautiful day yet. I knew it would be long, but not 22 miles and 9 hours kind of long. 🥴 I’m beat!

The day started out wet, and the arrows were not as well marked as in other parts of the Camino. That made it more difficult to find the flow of walking.

I passed by many gorgeous beaches and coastal vistas today. Today was probably my favorite day of hiking so far! At one point, I thought to myself, "I don’t want this day to end..." I was not having that same thought at mile 20. 😑

The path followed the coastline most of the way but did go inland for a short portion. I enjoyed the inland portion, especially the town of Nueva. It had more of the Indiano architecture that I saw in Colombres, but this town seemed a bit more cared for. Outside of Nueva I saw the cutest little train ever! 😍 After Nueva, I walked through the inland portion a bit more and came upon a beautiful old church at the top of a hill. It’s Sunday, so Sunday service was happening inside. The church had a covered patio with a bench outside the main doors. After a very wet day, I took a moment to have bread and cheese with a mountain view beside the church. 🏔️ Service was ending just as I started to eat, and the patrons were exiting, walking right past me. I was a little embarrassed, feeling sort of like a squatter. But I am a pilgrim, and this was a Catholic Church, so… 🤷‍♀️

After lunch, the Camino turned back toward the coast. I walked through a gorgeous rural Spanish neighborhood and past several apple orchards until the path opened up to a picturesque picnic area. I took another short break here because the view demanded it of me and then continued down toward Ribadesella, my stop for the day. This section of the coast was nothing like I could imagine existing in Spain. It felt like Ireland or Scotland.
I got a little bit lost at the end of the day and had to backtrack about half a mile. 🙄

My companion for today was Santiago, from my favorite (audio) book, "The Alchemist." I could listen to this book 100 times. One of my favorite themes of the book is that Santiago always has a purpose. He is in search of his personal legend. It’s important to have a purpose. I think one of my favorite parts about the Camino is that I know my purpose for the day: to make progress toward Santiago de Compostela. I am a day ahead of schedule, and I could rest if I wanted, but my body doesn’t need it just yet. Plus, I like the routine of getting up and immediately getting dressed, fed, and on my way. There is a kind of rhythm and flow to the day. I wouldn’t say the same is true at home in California. I want to carry this to my life back home. When you know your purpose or dream, it’s easier to get started.

People are capable at any point in life of doing what they dream of. I’m going to focus the second half of the Camino on figuring out what I dream of. 🤔

      Schlafen vor dem Bahnhof

      August 14, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

      Ribadesella

      June 24, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Caught the early train to Ribadesella, only two carriages and two Euros. We made our way west along the coast slowly, through villages and farms with the coast on one side and spectacular mountains on the other. It was really misty and quite eerie. The fishermen were having beer and coffee and I joined them by the wharf. I climbed to an old fort and the view of the coast and port were beautiful with the sun trying to make it thru the clouds. Walking back to the train, because I wanted to do a 15 km walk not a 35 km slog, I came upon a Vespa rally which was a hoot. Then caught the train, hopped off at a tiny wayside stop and prayed my Apple Maps would help me find my way back to Llanes. The coastline was fantastic and some of the tiny coves were people free, but others were so crowded I couldn’t understand the pleasure of being there. But it was a brilliant day only spoiled by the most disgusting meal ever, which turned out to be squid in its own dye!!!! Ah well, but I still loved my stay on the coast.Read more
