    • Day 52

      Santiago de Compostela

      June 11, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We set off for a walk to the El Cortes Ingles which is a rare shopping centre/department store in Spain. We stopped for coffee on the way and saw Leigh Brennan walking her dog Cooper. Leigh is the host of the Camino Café podcast and I met her while staying at Casa Susi.

On the way back from the shopping centre I saw Justin Skeesuck from I’ll Push You. He had just arrived in Santiago. We went over and introduced ourselves and chatted for a bit as you do with people from the Camino.

After a delicious Italian meal we went to the Cathedral for our roof tour. Unfortunately it was in Spanish so we missed the history of the building but the views from the very, very sloped roof and tower were amazing.

One of the great coincidences of the Camino was Sandra and I beginning on the same day in St Jean and both staying in Beilari. And both having the exact same backpack. As we were talked over the weeks we discovered an even greater connection. My dad came to Australia from Italy in 1951 and met Johnny Berton soon after. They remained close friends all their lives, dad was his best man and mum was Jessie’s matron of honour. We spent a lot of time with Johnny and Jessie and their four children when we were growing up. Carla is one of those children and is also one of Sandra’s closest friends. I will catch up with Sandra and Carla and hopefully Gina when we get home.

My Camino really ends today as I leave for Madrid in the morning. What an adventure. I’ve loved all of it, even the bits that were very challenging at the time. Will I do it again? I will have to wait and see!

      Arrived in Santiago!

      May 9 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

I had a very short day today, less than 20 km, so I didn’t set an alarm and slept till after seven! By 8:00 I was on the way. Chatted with a lot of people, both people walking, and people out and about. As you get closer to a big city, you are bound to run into all sorts of people who are using the same space as you are to get to their own destinations. It’s sometimes a rude awakening to realize that not everyone who is out there is walking to Santiago! I had a particularly nice long chat with a woman who was planting potatoes. She had a daughter living in Illinois, but she was sure she would never go that far from home to see her. Luckily, her daughter comes back at least once a year.

I was so happy to be able to finally visit the Colegiata de Sar, a beautiful 12C Romanesque church ear Santiago, which had buttresses added to keep it standing in the 14th or 15 century. The part of the cloister that remains is really beautiful, and I’m glad I got to see it. Free for pilgrims!

This Camino crosses the bridge close to the spot where the terrible train accident happened. It’s been many years, but there are still memorials up there. So many lives at short.

When I arrived in Santiago, it was pretty clear it was a holiday. Lots of music, a few parades, tons of people (but there’s nothing unusual about that). As I was watching a little band playing traditional Gallego instruments, I turned around to a tap on the back and saw it was Faith! We had a good long chat, and I’m thinking that on my return to Santiago, I may take her up on her offer of the Pilgrim House debrief. I’ve never done anything like that, but think it might be enlightening.

Since I am leaving Santiago tomorrow to walk on to Finisterre and Muxia, today is more of a regular day than a celebratory ending. That will come in good time.

      Santiago de Compostela

      August 31, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Wandered around the old town today, sat in the plaza at the cathedral, attended the Pilgrims mass, visited the musuem and treated myself to a fancy lunch. I must admit I still surprised when my order comes out. Finished the day with gelato and a walk through the park. Now to pack for Switzerland 🥰💜🩷💞Read more

    • Day 35

      Santiago 3

      May 21 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Read more

      Day 26 Salceda - Santiago

      May 22 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

      27.1 km (667.3 km from the start). 34.000 steps. 1708 calories. 5h 10min on the road. 6.2 km/h

Last night hostel was the most expensive on my Camino trip - and what a shithole 😂 Old, very thin walls, you could hear kitchen, air conditioning, bathrooms in other rooms - and people talking 😱 Food was delicious and that was important.

So many pilgrims on the road. I walked very fast today - wanted to make it done. I am so ready to get back to civilization. I loved Caminos first 22 days - and I didn’t like last 4 days.

Spanish pilgrims are not taking this task so seriously. They are slow, usually taking all the space and not considering other people are walking there too. Every non-Spanish pilgrim I talked to was more than irritated by our Spanish co-pilgrims.

Arrived at Santiago just around noon. While everyone rushed to noon mass - I looked after Camino pilgrim office. Waiting time was 35 seconds 😂 - and expected waiting time later today will be 5-6 hours.

Got my Compostela - a proof I have walked from Saint Jean Pied de Port - 779 km. My Garmin calculated little bit less - but those are small details.

I am tired, satisfied and little proud. Walking Camino in 26 days was ambitious but I did it.

Tomorrow is off day and bus trip to Porto. That will be my final note in my blog - and my retrospective to my Camino experience.

O Sisto -> Santiago de Compostella

      May 30 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Today, we woke up to a mildly, cloudy day, and we're very happy about that. We didn't want to have to walk in the heat on the last portion of our walk to Compostella. After a fabulous breakfast this by our hosts. We set off to Compostella.
There were about 12 other Camino walkers around the table, and all we talked about was our last day to get to compostella. We're all very excited.
The walk was wonderful, and there were pretty sights. And some odd little things that I took pictures of. When we entered compostella, where the cathedral was located in the town square, we were in awe.. There is nothing to describe the feeling we had spiritually and of what we accomplished in the last fourteen days. We went to our hotel and took showers. Went back out to the town square and walked through all the shops. We stopped and had dinner, which was very good, and we went to a mass in the cathedral itself. All I can say is, Wow! We walked a total of 14.5 miles today.
