      Dag 8: Portomarin toe!

      October 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Buen CaminoRead more

      Scenic option to Sarria

      October 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

*Cows and sheep and goats gonna scurry....* That is my only complaint today. Mary Beth woke up singing this song and it got stuck in my head all day. Other than that, no complaints.

15 miles of beautiful scenery and sites, including an active Benedictine monastery in Samos that is the oldest (?) monastery in the Western world. (Sadly, we could only see the outside as we didn't have time to wait for the tour).

Old, old villages, shaded paths, more cows--and goats to greet us as we entered Sarria.

It's clear this is the launching point for many. Bigger town and lots of stores and cafes geared toward the newbie pilgrim. We are prepared to welcome them to the Camino (the seasoned pilgrims that we are!) and excited to be in the home stretch now.

      In Spain

      April 10 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

      Hola it’s Eloise

We made it to Spain! After 2 plane trips and a train ride we are in Sarria, and tomorrow we begin the Camino. Before I continue I would like you to meet someone, this is Elle a little grey toy elephant with a bow tie (picture included). She will be joining us on the Camino as my little travel buddy! Elle is very special to me because she was my first toy 🐘.

Starting today I am going to do a little something called Spanish word of the day: every day (or at least every day I do a post) I will tell you a Spanish word and what it means. Let’s start with something simple and well known like hola (o-la) hola means hello in Spanish, good job.

Now I think I have to explain something, you have probably seen the shell in my first blog it is a scallop shell and is the symbol for the Camino because it shows all the different paths leading to Santiago de compostela.

Once again I am sorry I haven’t written in the blog for awhile it’s been a long couple days getting to Spain and everything but I hope you have fun reading them.

      From Eloise

      P.S
If you are ever in Spain get Cola Cao it is like hot chocolate and is DELICIOUS 😋.

      Sarria 20.9 km

      April 10 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

I woke up at 6 am. I was quiet so as not to disturb the Italian woman even though she woke me up at 10 pm chatting with someone....
Then all of a sudden she leapt out of bed and switched on the big light!!

I was happy because I could pack up by the big heater in the room instead of the freezing cold kitchen.

She was raring to go in minutes, and wanted to wait for me but I declined.....I needed my coffee first.

It was a cool but beautiful morning. I knew Samos would have a bar for breakfast and that was 6 km away or so.

I reached Samos and no bar was open. Walked on and there wasn't a bar until Sarria!!! But I was fine....just disappointed.

Anyway..... I only saw one man from my O Breiro group. The others must have taken the alternative shorter route.

I saw 2 huge storks in a field and the cutest Burro. I don't have a picture of the Burro because the Man said NO!!!

I arrived at a hostel I have stayed at previously that I love. Hot showers cosy warm private beds, great kitchen, and close to the bus and train.

I will rest tomorrow before going to Ponferrada

      Rest Day 160 km completed

      April 11 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Had scrambled eggs for breakfast and headed out to find a place in the sun to catch up on my journal.

      Gorgeous day.

Had my lunch on a park bench listening to the birds.

Got my things ready for tomorrow. Fewer pilgrims are staying tonight perhaps 6 or so.

Saw a dozen pilgrims uptown...certainly the numbers are increasing.

      Off to Ponferrada tomorrow.

Day 9: Tricastela to Sarria. 10 miles

      April 14 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Today as soon as we got started, we had a decision to make. Go right and that was the shorter way by 7 km or go left. Supposedly that was a nice walk with a visit to a monestary. Since we had just spent the night in one, we went the shorter route. It was a beautiful.
Too tired to write so I will just add pictures. We broke away from some of the group today. Not because we wanted to but since there were 2 routes, bigger city with lots of places to stay. Hopefully, we can get back with our peeps tomorrow. Had a nice dinner with Aliyn from Istanbul.

      Sarria

      April 23 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

I seem to keep picking albergues up/down steep slopes, add that to the learnings for next time because once you've walked up/down/up and down to get there after a days walk a find a 'back soon' sign on the door it is a bit hnnnggg. Anyway I went and had a wine and came back and all was well. I checked in with another girl who, it turns out is Spanish, 22, starting walking tomorrow and absolutely shitting herself.

I held her hands and told her she could do it and jumped around a bit to assure her I was fine and she would be too, told her about the app and then I tried to give her some cheese. If I see her tomorrow I'll walk with her a bit.

We're both a bit perplexed about where the hell all these supposed hordes in Sarria are - as a pair we are currently half of the population of our albergue so it looks like that myth has been busted as I expected. I knew making a fuss about it in April was fear mongering.

In other news I've gone absolutely lactose mad in the last few days I'm not sure what's happening, potentially a calcium addicted tapeworm?

      Triacastela to Sarria

      May 3 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

429 miles done. 71 to go.

Today was relatively nice and I only had to wear a poncho and rain gear for the first hour of the morning. The rest of the day was beautiful as I found my way to Sarria.

Was craving carbonara and found it just a few steps away from my hotel and it came in a bread bowl that was delicious. 10/10, would gorge again.

After the food settled in, I took a nap for a few hours and then wandered the city. Topped the night off with a pizza and vino tinto and then early to bed. 5 more days of walking!

      Day 22 Fonfria - Sarria

      May 18 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

      26.7 km (654.3 km from the start). 32.000 steps. 1620 calories. 6 km/h

Huge hostel last night - my room had 50 beds - and room next door had 30 beds. Finally Danish pilgrims in there but not someone I wanted to talk to. Couple where wife was bitching over everything, 3 younger guys talking about amount of beer they had during Camino and older chap who absolutely wanted to educate people around how important it was to be fit as him. God dammit, he was doing pushups in the middle of hostel 😂😂

Rainy day today, from start to finish. Doesn’t bother me at all - as long my gear is working. And it is working - I made to Sarria dry - and sweaty 😅

If stage yesterday was going up - today stage was going down. 1428m going down and 591m going up. If this was beginning of Camino - my knees would be destroyed. Now - nothing special - I am in pretty good shape and I could keep doing this for a long time.

Sarria is a place where Spanish people start their Camino - quite curious about amount of people on the path - we’ll see tomorrow

      Triacastela to Sarria

      May 18, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Good evening from Sarria, Spain. Sarria is the starting point for hundreds of people per day that wish to walk to Santiago and earn the Compostela certificate. According to the “rules”, a person must walk the last 100 km to earn the certificate which is 62 miles. I have already walked around 270 miles but it doesn’t mean anything, I must walk the last 62 into Santiago to qualify. Now, having said all that, I couldn’t care less if I get the Compostela or not...it is in Latin so I can’t read it anyway. I also only marginally care if I see Santiago but I would like to see what all the fuss is about when it comes to Santiago. I am simply interested in finishing what I started. So, here is the deal. I really need to be in Porto, Portugal by next Thursday as my flight leaves for home on Friday morning. I really should arrive in Portugal on Wednesday to give myself some breathing room. Sooo...that means I need to cover 18 miles a day for the next four days so I can be in Santiago on Tuesday. I have been slowed up with my knee issue so it has put on more pressure. I have dumped all of the weight out of my pack to lighten the load. Bare necessities at this point. Anything that I could do without got dumped. Tent...clothes except for the bare minimum...flashlight...anything that weighed anything...it’s only stuff. But, I still don’t know if I can pull this off. I do risk not having a tent if I cannot find a bed but I can find someplace to throw the sleeping bag down under cover if I have to. I will tell you that the past couple of days, with the leg issues, that it has been tempting to jump on a train to Portugal and lay on the beach for the next few days but I haven’t given up yet. So, out the door at 0600 in the morning and we will see how it goes. That is it from Spain tonight, I hope this finds everyone well.Read more
