      Meseta Part - 1

      27. september 2022, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Days 22 to 24 (Castellanos de Castro, Boadilla del Camino, Villalcazar de Sirga) - the Camino is classified into three sections. The first tests (and may break) your physical well being, the second the mental and the third your spiritual. I am now at the start of the second phase and I can attest to the first. My knees were problematic right through phase 1. I would start off ok every morning but then go into a shuffle where I had to use my arms and the hiking poles to take the weight off my knees by early afternoon. Luckily I decided that I had to do something to fix them - and I did. Most mornings I get up early and do some stretches, muscle flossing (google it) and squats. Gradually the knees have improved, better every day. The last three days I’ve been on the meseta and I’ve walked 30, 29 and 18.5 km respectively with some ease. Today I found 18.5 kms easy and reached my destination at 1pm - really surprised myself.
Everyone says the meseta is boring and difficult to traverse. I have found it to be quite ok so far. Each day I’ve started off at a fast pace for the first third and then dropped off to a slower pace. For example this morning I set off with these two Aussie guys - pilgrims, and went 10kms to Fromista at a very brisk pace to see the amazing Church of Saint Martin of Tours in Fromista and then have a second breakfast at a lovely little cafe in the church square before continuing on slower. Tomorrow I am walking with a Korean gentleman who I met at the local grocery store in Villacalzar de Sirga. He too is going to walk the 32 kms to Terradillos. Hope I make it!!
As you can see from the photos - the towns, the churches, the countryside are starting to look similar. Perhaps this is why people get bored on the meseta. I have a few more days of this and will tell you how I feel as the days go on. I think I just love to walk, and hope that feeling stays with me.
      More next time!

Fromista to San Zoilo - Sunday 11th June

      11. juni 2023, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

This will be a short entry as it’s very late, I’m very tired and we have a very long day ahead of us tomorrow.
Today started with a beautiful walk along a river - slightly longer than the regular route but avoiding the ‘senda’ which seems to be the Camino word for a path running right beside a road. Loads of birdsong and very loud front noises made it fun.
We walked for this part of the day with Sheryl and Janice and I loved hearing all about life and landscapes in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Stopped for coffee (very necessary) early at a little hotel that might be worth noting for future trips and then ate our breakfast at a table in a park a bit further on (our own yoghurts, nuts , fruits etc.
at about 11.30 we came to the end of the river path and found another cafe at Villalcazar de Sirdo for coffee and delicious watermelon.
Then came the trickiest part of the day - a long straight senda into Carrion los condes with looming storm approaching from behind us. Very hot and humid and my feet began to get sore so I was very relieved to get to the start of the town where I found a shady bench outside an hermita to change my shoes.
The town was celebrating Corpus Christi and the street were decorated with rose petals for the parade which included the children who had taken their first communion in May.
Ate tortilla at a very crowded bar in the square and then headed for our monastery hotel which is about a kilometre out of town.
Getting clean felt great but I’m really struggling with a large insect bite on my shoulder which is quite swollen and very itchy. When we headed back into town later to join the nuns singing at the Santa Maria Albergue I found a pharmacy open and the pharmacist looked a bit worried and gave me hydrocortisone crème. Doesn’t seem to be working yet but I live in hope!
After joining the nuns at 6 we went to mass at 7 and then hared back to the hotel for dinner at 8 (the earliest they do). Very very hungry but had a good actual vegetarian meal and feel better now - which is lucky as there’s nothing for 17km tomorrow when we start walking and we haven’t got much food left. Think I’ll be resorting to the energy bars finally! Still, at least my pack will the a bit lighter.
Huge thunderstorm raging outside at the moment - second one today. We’ve been so fortunate not to get caught in the rain today. Hoping the same for tomorrow.

Frómista to Carrión de los Condes

      20. april, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

246 miles done. 254 to go. 49%…almost half way!

Very short walk today and walked most of the way with Dianne and Sharon, a couple from Australia. They are a hoot and fun to talk to. Mostly grass fields and graveled paths today with very little elevation changes.

Went to mass at the Catholic Church in town and then had a late pilgrim’s dinner. Tomorrow I will be at 50% of the total distance and as of today, I’m 21 days away from kissing Bryan again. It is true that distance makes the heart grow fonder. I’m missing a piece of me, and Bryan is that piece.

      Night!

Arriving in Carrion de los Condes

      19. april, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

After a gruelling last few kms, we arrived in Carrion de Los Condes (lots of ‘Carry On Up the Camino’ type jokes between me and Nick)

I’m staying in a private room here in a hostel and it is soooo fab! It even has a pool and we put our feet and legs in it for a while whilst sitting in the sunshine.

Went for an explore and to get provisions. Glue to mend my wayward insoles and food for the 17km stretch with no cafes or any other helpful thing tomorrow.

Wandered down the the river. It’s such a pretty town. Then to dinner at a restaurant and home to talk to R and go to bed.

      Mittag hinter der Kirche

      11. oktober 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

      Boadilla to Villacazar de Sirga

      22. september 2018, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

As I write this I am at a cafe/bar in Villacazar. I checked into an albergue that runs on donations. It is a decent place run by a religious order but they have no WiFi. I had a group meal tonight with everyone who was staying there...pasta, salad and wine. A great time with people from France, Germany, Switzerland, Poland and Guadalupe. I met a guy today that has lived on the Camino for 11 years....he, survives by working in albergues. He loves it. Tomorrow, I forge ahead, not sure of my next town. I have done the math and only have to walk 9.84 miles per day to finish in Ponferrada and have enough time to get back to Madrid to catch my plane home....very easy. I have met a guy from Bar Harbor and a couple from Litchfield thus far. It is still very hot out here on the meseta...around 90 degrees at midday but again, not really an issue except for a shower is an absolute must when you arrive at your destination. I am working on some videos....hopefully by tomorrow afternoon. Take care and as always...thank you for checking in!Læs mere

      Villalcazar de Sirga to Ledigos

      23. maj 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Left at 6am with Caterina, Steffi and Rowena. Made good time to Carrion then had brekkie. We then hit the 18km stretch which had no bars water stops etc. It was really windy but cloudy so it wasn't too hot. It would have been a difficult day if the sun had been out.
Once that was over, we stopped at Calzadilla de la Cueza for a couple of beers. Met Book, Ying, Charley, Jane, Pru, Sean, Gerrard there. Walked the last 6km with Gerrard. Met Tammy when we arrived at Accommodation Moreno and 3 of us had dinner.
We had food off the main menu rather than going for the Pilgrim menu. It was superb. I had Seafood Linguine. Melissa joined us for a drink. Great day.
Short easy day ahead on Wednesday to Sahagún which is the halfway point. I feel excited about that but I also don't want this thing to come to an end.

      Back in touch

      14. maj 2018, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Since leaving Burgos, we’ve climbed the Meseta, the high plain that stretches from Burgos to Leon. Wide open spaces, remote old Camino towns, and very little communication available. The Meseta was the breadbasket of the Roman Empire, and we’ve passed miles of wheat and barley fields under a big blue sky.

We met our first Spanish cowboy and spent a night in the romantic town of Castrojeriz. The wind beat us up for several days, and the temp was 32 degrees when we left Castrojeriz Sunday morning.

We spent Sunday night in Laurie’s favorite albergue in Boadilla de Camino, sleeping up in the old barn loft!

Looks like warmer weather coming, and still we’ve dodged the rain. On Wednesday we’ll pass the halfway point of the Camino from St. Jean to Santiago.

A belated Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms!
