Day 5 - Pres de Vidy to Vevey

      8. Juni 2023 in der Schweiz ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

The day began with waterfront walk. There were lots of people out exercising and going to work. I met #trailangels Stephan and Monica who bought me an ice cream and we have a neat chat about a charity they are involved in #Help-for-Hope. Then the day got reasonably hard as it was straight up not just one but twice. It felt like I climbed Everest but it was only a total of 500m ( I’m sure the sun wasn’t as hot as in the vineyards. 26.6km todayWeiterlesen

      Lausanne

Day 53 - Cossonay to Lausanne

      11. Juni 2023 in der Schweiz ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

The day started warm. Even at 5 a.m., I was quite comfortable sitting outside before the sun came up, with only my slides on and no jacket! I had a late start because it was Sunday (and breakfast is not served before 8 a.m.) and was grateful when the roadside walking, through farmland, changed to riverside walking (La Venoge). I got to Lake Geneva at 1:45 p.m. and got to walk almost 9 km along its shores. I don't know why, but I was surprised to see swans on the lake. I saw a terrific number of people today (the most I've seen this trip). There were loads of people all along the path today, walking, running, cycling - all getting out in nature on the weekend. Of course, being a beautiful, warm day (and the weekend), Lake Geneva was a big attraction. It was very hard to pick my photos today as I took so many. Note: My waymarkers are now a yellow diamond with a black border and are nowhere near as frequently as I would like. I have to refer to the app constantly! P.S. I look at those mountains and feel very intimidated. I weary today. P.S.S. the only downside was the SWARMS of midges or gnats that were all along the lake path!Weiterlesen

      Lausanne 16 miles

      22. August 2023 in der Schweiz ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

Dreadful night. Hot, sticky, noisy, airless. Sometimes camping isn’t as much fun as you think it should be.

Off sharp as I was due to meet a young lady later. Temperature lovely for walking until the sun came up.

Then another hot one. Forecast is for another couple of hot days and then start to reduce. By Sunday it might be 14C cooler. Can’t wait!

The signs have completely changed in Switzerland. No more of the French signs with their Via Francigena symbols or Red and White flashes for the GR145. Even worse is the loss of the red and white crosses to indicate the wrong way. Now I need to know the name of the next place I am going to and hope that the Swiss have decided to mark a route going there. They have nice big signs listing all sort of places. After that they have large yellow diamond symbols to indicate the way. Trouble is they show the way to something. You don’t know it is the way you want, you just know it is the way to somewhere. And if you do go off route there is just a slow realisation that you haven’t seen any signs for ages to give you a clue that things are not going well.

Reached Lake Geneva. Looked lovely with the Alps on the far side. Long walk along the lakeside, feeling very hot and sticky, carrying that damn great bag, passing all the young things lying about, wearing not a lot and looking a whole lot more comfortable than I was feeling.

Reached Lausanne and then started walking uphill to get to the hotel. Passed a chemist where I got the temperature confirmed. Because the footprints automatically show the temperature for the time and place that I post (usually after 10pm) it has been suggested that I have been exaggerating the heat. Believe me I can tell the difference between backpacking in 26C and 36C.

This city must be about the hilliest I have ever been to. All up, down and then back up again. Managed (just) to get to the hotel, drop the bag off, quick shower, change of clothes and off to the train station to meet the gaffer. By the time we got back to the hotel, via a wee ice cream halt, I needed another shower and change.

Basic, but pricey Vietnamese dinner to follow. One course and a bottle of water got rid of £70. Of course, paying for two doesn’t help.

      Fechy

      10. Juli 2023 in der Schweiz ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We have had a lovely couple of days with Pierre-Yves and Claudia. They were incredibly kind. Evenings were a bit dangerous as Pierre-Yves is a very generous host.
Hopefully we can return the favor soon.
Waiting to catch ferry to France and the Alps

      Day 4 Cossonay to Lausanne

      7. Juni 2023 in der Schweiz ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

23 km as I am staying the night at the youth hostel Jeunotel instead of another couple of km all the way to central Lausanne. The day started with funicular ride down the hill instead of walking the dirt path down. Then gradual climb through farmland and Forrests. Saw a guy painting a mural on a wall of one of the old community washing fountains. Then it was down hill to follow the river. There were lots of people out walking and running. Then all of a sudden the path came out at Lac Leman with a fabulous view of the Swiss and French alps. Lots of people out and about. So I sat down and had my first ice cream. Not as good as the Italian gelato but I enjoyed it nevertheless The kindergarten children were sleeping on the grass on sleeping mats in the park with their Nannie’s. On the whole it felt like an easy day due to the lack of any mega hills. So all good. No ticks only ducks, swans, and crows. I think I even heard a woodpecker. I’m looking forward to walking along the lake front and vineyards with unripe grapes.Weiterlesen

      Basel to Lausanne

      2. Mai in der Schweiz ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Arrived into Lausanne from Basel. Decided to take the fast Tomtom route rather than the winding route as it wasn't that different. The first part was beautiful winding roads through mountains with switchbacks galore. Then approaching one town (I never know the name of the town I am in due to satnav) - oh it was Oberdorf (thanks to apple photos recording the location) it suddenly started raining so I pulled over to put waterproofs on both myself and over the rucksack. By the time I'd pulled over it was rainforest level torrential rain with thunder and lightning (very very fright'ning). Too rainy for the bike so sat in a shop car park for half an hour or so. Then as the rain petered out I resumed my course for Lausanne. I planned to arrive at 18.40 as Izzy - who I was staying with - was working till then. But all restaurants along the route looked closed so Iarrived about an hour early and got a sandwich at a very French sandwich shop.Weiterlesen

      Zwischenstop in der Schweiz

      Bushaltestelle in Lausanne

Wieder 3 Sachen fürs Leben gelernt bzw. verfestigt.

      Rivaz 10 miles

      23. August 2023 in der Schweiz ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

For complicated reasons today was a bit different. We walked the next 10 miles of the Via and then got the train back so we had 2 nights in the one hotel. The first time in the last 6 weeks that I have stayed more than 1 night anywhere.

First we opted for the hotel breakfast but as this cost 15SFr each we had to go some to justify the cost. Took an hour and we did our level best.

Felt really strange to start walking without the big bag. Could really get used to it very easily. Very gentle walking along the lake-side, stopping repeatedly at benches when they were in shade. Very chilled out but it seemed to take ages to cover just 5 miles for the first half. And it was anything but chilly. You might have thought that the lake would have kept it a little cooler but it didn’t seem to.

Despite passing many restaurants full of folk enjoying fancy lunches we settled for pilgrim fare of tart, bananas and water from a supermarket. At 5SFr probably better value.

In the afternoon the route headed up the terraces for even better views.
Lovely air-conditioned train back to Lausanne. Spot of sight-seeing up the tower of the cathedral and back to the hotel.

After 6 weeks virtually tee-total it didn’t take long to fall under Glynice’s influence and have a couple of pints of lager for tea together with some sort of Swiss tapas. So much better than last night. Might get used to it I suppose.
