      Day 57 - Saint Maurice to Martigny

      Another good day of walking. It was warm, and I got to spend a lot of the time under trees, walking through forest trails, which is always a good thing. Everywhere in Switzerland, that I have seen is beautiful: Saint Maurice was lovely, as is Martigny. When I got up this morning, there was not a cloud in the sky, so I took some photos of the surrounding mountains. I met another pilgrim today, Matt, from the USA. The two rivers are the Mauvoisin (looks like a canal) and the Saint Barthelemy (flowing under the wooden bridge). The waterfall is the Cascade de la Pissevache (where I met a lovely Swiss woman), I saw the Mont Blanc Express train today, and I took a minor detour, up a very rough track, to grab a photo of Des Gorges du Trient (the photo with the bridge between the rock walls).Read more

      Day 60

      Day 58 - rest day (Martigny)

      Today, I acted as a tourist. I visited the Roman amphitheatre (were there will be a performance on Sunday), the "Barry" museum (dedicated to the Saint Bernard) - there were 11 puppies all from the one litter (I also learnt a lot about Grand Saint Bernard Pass and met up with two uni students from Brisbane), I visited the art gallery (which was showing a Turner exhibition from the Tate), had an impressive Roman artifact collection, a vintage car collection, and a really lovely sculpture garden - there was a Max Ernst piece, a Moore and two Rodin's; one of Victor Hugo. In the afternoon, I walked up to the Chateau de la Batiaz, climbed to the top, and got panoramic views of the area. I am now sitting outside a bar listening to a terrific Blues band! The one other thing I will mention is the incredible wooden bridge, still functioning - cars and all - that spans the Dranse River (called the Batiaz).       Via Walkers Haute Route zum Matterhorn

      Wir verlassen heute die Tour du Mont Blanc und switchen auf die zweite große Tour: die Walker‘s Haute Route. 🗻 Auf den nächsten 170 Kilometern werden wir die Waliser Alpen bis nach Zermatt durchqueren.
      Da wir für heute nur 15km zu bewältigen haben, haben wir den Morgen sehr entspannt begonnen und sind auch erst um 9 Uhr vom Campingplatz Rocailles aufgebrochen. Unser Ziel: Le Chablé. Dort haben wir uns für 2 Nächte eine Unterkunft gebucht und machen morgen einen Zero-Day. Der Weg bis dorthin war einfach und vergleichsweise unaufgeregt. Da unser Zelt von den letzten Nächten sehr nass war, haben wir es während einer Pause vom Wind trocknen lassen. Schon um 14 Uhr sind wir dann an unserem Ziel angekommen. Jetzt heißt es erstmal: Hiker Hunger stillen und Füße hochlegen. 👍🏻

      Still in Switzerland, at Triente

      Hiked a 16km day. Rained a bit just enough to get a bit of use of the waterproof gear we’ve been lugging everyday. These alps are so so high. We see some people trail running them which is astounding we feel. Walking up is tough enough. Height gain 850m, height loss 1040m. This means we’re down low in a valley and the only way out is up! 😩😬Read more

      Day 56 - Aigle to Saint Maurice

      A really mixed bag of walking today; vineyards, forests, riverside (La Gryonne and the Rhone), railway line side, and, of course, minor country road ways. I got some good climbing in and saw the most beautiful wooden sculptures along a path called Sentier du Pelerin (Pilgrims Path). Now I'm in Switzerland, I have to remember to keep looking up - my sun hat prevents that, so that I don't miss the mountains all around me. I'm staying tonight with the Franciscans - a commercial enterprise that seems to be doing very well. Note how pale the Rhone looks.       Expeditionsmodus: AN

      Mittlerweile ist ja fast normal geworden, dass die Nächte windig und regnerisch sind. So auch diese… 🌧️
      Bei kühlen Temperaturen sind wir aufgebrochen, um den Grand Col Ferret auf 2.537m zu erklimmen. Schon nach den ersten Metern wehte uns der Eisregen mit kräftigen Windböen entgegen. Je höher wir kamen, um so heftiger die Wetterlage. Inzwischen war unsere Umgebung schon mit Schnee und Eis bedeckt. ❄️🏔️ Es fühlte sich irgendwie unwirklich an. Nach 2 Stunden sind wir inklusive einer Espresso-Pause am Refugio Elena auf dem Pass angekommen. Die Sicht zurück ins Tal war gleich null. Dafür war der Ausblick in die vor uns liegende Schweiz grandios.🇨🇭 Der Pass markiert nämlich auch die Grenze zwischen Italien und der Schweiz.
      Der Abstieg war vergleichsweise entspannt und wir genossen die Aussicht. Am nächsten Refugio haben wir uns dann erstmal ein ordentliches Omelett mit Bergkäse und Schinken gegönnt 🤤
      Nach der ausgiebigen Pause ging es entspannt weiter nach La Fouly. Dort haben wir dann entschieden, noch weiter zu gehen und dann nach einen Schlafplatz Ausschau zu halten. Da sich unterwegs keine guten Möglichkeiten geboten haben, haben wir unser nächstes Ziel Champex Lac angepeilt. Hier haben wir uns spontan für eine Nacht auf dem Campingplatz eingebucht und uns über eine warme Dusche gefreut. 🚿

      Day 61

      Day 59 - Martigny to Orsieres

      Today's walk was classified as "challenging," and it was. After leaving Martigny, the track followed the Dranse River and the train line. The track was narrow, rough, and unstable (obvious rock slides, tree roots, loose stones - of all sizes - thick beds of pine needles and pine cones; all designed to trip you up). I got to cross a suspension bridge, and then the track conditions got worse. For the first time ever, I removed the rubber stoppers from my poles (to try to keep me more stable going down the loose stones) and actually put the pole straps on my wrists (I was not going to risk loosing a pole). Then, of course, I strayed unwittingly from the path (and upgraded the classification to "bloody difficult"), I crossed over a recent a landslide, realised my mistake, and scaled the side of the mountain to get back on track. That was no mean feat, I was dragging myself up a good 20 to 30m by tree roots, branches, and solid rock holds. Meanwhile, slipping on the loose earth! Honestly, I was scrambling on my hands and knees at one point! I kept repeating two things: "I am not enjoying this" and "you are an experienced bushwalker." When I got back on the path, I was covered in dust, my knees were grazed, my legs and face scratched and bleeding, and all my fingernails were broken! After that adventure, the wind was really taken out of my sails, but I knew I was strong enough for whatever the Path throws at me next. Thankfully, the Path in the afternoon was wider and much more civilised. I got to Orsieres safe and sound and have the most incredible view from my hotel balcony!Read more

      3.Etappe-Aigle-St. Maurice

      Dieser dritte Tag war ganz okay, auch wenn die Füße am Ende wieder schmerzten, ja, Asphalt eben und neue Blasen... Ich hab dann in St. Maurice ein Klosterzimmer bekommen mit Küche, ich war die einzige Pilgerin. Abends habe ich mir Entrecôte gegönnt, wenn man schon billiger schläft, kann man ja auch was Gutes essen, oder? Und das Klosterbier war wirklich sehr gut. Der geschwätzige Priester mit eigenem Humor hat dann die ganze Klostergeschichte morgens um halb sieben aufgetischt, so dass er vom Frühstück kaum was gegessen hatte, ich hingegen futterte immerzu, ich wurde auch nichts gefragt... Insgesamt ein schöner, aussichtsreicher Tag, nach welchem ich noch die Kraft hatte, 1,5h das Kloster anzugucken.Read more

      Martigny 11 miles

      Amazing how each hotel has something different to keep us from getting a decent sleep. Last night we had church bells. Amazingly loud. Every quarter of an hour with extra helpings on the hour. No rush to get up as another short day and the weather was meant to get a little better during the day. Unfortunately, it meant that the locusts, ie our fellow guests, had been at the breakfast buffet before us. Slim pickings left.

      We got going as late as allowed and the rain had indeed improved from heavy to lightish. Over the first hour it went off completely. Ended up being quite a nice day for walking which itself was pretty average. Would have been better if the clouds had lifted but the temperature was so much better than previous days. Bit of a shame that we have gone from blue sky and 36C to raining and low cloud at 16C. Somewhere in the middle would have been perfect. I’m thinking blue sky with white fluffy clouds and 26C.

      Transitional day for scenery. Away from the lake but not really into the mountains yet. “Cascade de la Pissevache” sounds much nicer than the English translation of “Cow’s piss waterfall” don’t you think?

      Arrived at the next hotel early afternoon without feeling the need for lunch. By the time we had got ourselves organised it had started raining again. Dithered about for a bit hoping it would stop. When we did hit the town we found it was pretty dead. Switzerland retail doesn’t really do Sunday afternoons.

      Booked an early meal at a place recommended by our hotel for raclette which I had taken a notion for after the fondue of the previous evening. Better to spend 28€ on a Swiss speciality in Switzerland than 23€ on their take of an Italian pasta dish. Very nice it was too.

      Hoch hinaus: Le Chable - Mont Fort

      Die heutige Etappe hatte es in sich: auf nur etwa 13 km sind wir über 1.600 HM nach oben… der Aufstieg verlief lange Zeit durch einen tollen, gut duftenden und schattigen Wald. Es war total schön, die Ruhe zu genießen, denn wir sind bis auf ein paar wenigen Locals niemandem begegnet.
      Der große Schreck kam erst nach ein paar Kilometern. Denn inzwischen befanden wir uns inmitten eines Ski-, Mountainbike-, Paraglider-Gebietes mit zahlreichen Seilbahnen. 🤨
      Dementsprechend war echt viel los…
      Wir haben uns davon nicht beeindrucken lassen uns sind auf direktem Wege weiter zu unserem angepeilten Ziel gelaufen. Zur Hütte Mont Fort auf 2.457m. Hier haben wir den Nachmittag entspannt verbracht, lecker gekocht und die Aussicht auf den Mont Blanc genossen. Zu unserem Glück ist die Hütte wegen Umbau geschlossen. Der Plan war, dass wir einfach mit dem Schlafsack auf der Terrasse schlafen. Leider hat uns der spontane Regen dann einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht und wir sind doch wieder aufs Zelt umgestiegen…
