      Tag 64.3: Bei Sonnenuntergang

      Bei Sonnenuntergang haben wir die Fähre zurück nach Eminönü genommen und uns nach wieder Ankunft auf dem europäischen Teil der Stadt noch kurz ins Getümmel des Ägyptischen Bazars (auch Gewürzbazar genannt) - bzw. in Seitenstraßen außerhalb - um ein paar Gewürze, Kaffee, Souvenirs und Käse zu kaufen.
      Danach haben wir uns wieder in die Tram in Richtung unseres Viertels gequetscht. In unserem Viertel angekommen, haben wir uns noch auf die Suche nach einem
      Restaurant zum Abendessen gemacht und wurden in einer etwas abgelegeneren Straße fündig. Wir haben im traditionell türkischen Restaurant mal die Gerichte „Pilov“ (ein Reisgericht mit Rindfleisch), „Kiyma Sis“ (ein Fleischspieß) und „Kavurma Lagman“ (ein Nudelgericht) probiert. Für die Kinder gab es wir meist noch Pommes dazu, die hier in der Türkei bisher meist ziemlich lätschig sind. Aber unsere Jungs haben auch alles andere mitgegessen und es haben uns alle Gerichte sehr gut geschmeckt.
      Nun aber zurück „nach Hause“, denn es mussten vor dem Heimaturlaub von Robert noch ein paar Dinge erledigt und gepackt werden und die Zeit war schon mal wieder etwas weiter vorangeschritten als beabsichtigt.

      Tag 65.2: Süleymaniye Camii

      Im Anschluss haben wir uns auf den Weg zur „Süleymaniye Camii (Mosche)“ gemacht. Dies ist eine prächtige Moschee aus dem 16. Jahrhundert mit Gärten und einer Aussicht auf das Goldene Horn sowie den Bosporus. Nach einem Blick in die Moschee haben wir nochmal den Ausblick genoßen, und Kurt ausgrubt sowie gestärkt und einem Straßenverkäufer zwei Spielkreisel angekauft, von denen vor allem Otto sehr begeistert war und sich schon darauf freute es zu üben.Læs mere

      Spice Bazaar

      So, leaving the mosque, it was thankfully downhill through more narrow streets. One thing you see a lot is deliveries are made by men pulling carts. Istanbul is also afflicted with the scooter problem, and it is even more perplexing here with the crowds and the cobblestones and the hordes of motor scooters.

      The next stop is the Spice or Egyptian Market. It was really a neat place.

      Misir Carsisi or the Egyptian Market is one of Istanbul’s largest bazaars. It is believed that the market got its name because it was built using funds from the Ottoman division in Egypt in 1660 and completed in 1664. The profits from the market would be used for the upkeep of the mosque but today the market is a separate entity. Although the name suggests that all the stores in the market sell spices more and more bazaar businesses are selling a variety of goods like cheese, nuts, fruit, sweets, souvenirs and other items. Today there are approximately 85 stores selling spices and other goods. The covered market building is surrounded by small lanes which also have many stores selling interesting goods. On the western side of the market are outdoor stalls selling fresh produce including coffee.      Læs mere

      One thing that's so satisfying about an extended stay is being able to see a place at different times of the day. Here's an afternoon view from the crow's nest of my hotel, long after breakfast has been and gone. Around Sultanahmet, the quarter where I'm staying, there are lots of quiet corners and views. A return to the Grand Bazaar is a must; the numerous porters and their trolleys could be symbols of this bustling commercial life.Læs mere

      Ticking off the big sights - Part 1

      We did things a little backwards in Istanbul compared to usual and we went on a tour of the city today, just as we come to the end of our time here.

      This was probably pretty much Dale Day as other than going to the bazaars (🎵 how bazaar, how bazaar 🎶) this was a history tour hitting just about all the big sites around Istanbul all the way out to the Theodotian Walls and up the Golden Horn to see the Ottoman forts and get a seaside view of Galata Tower that held the one end of the chain that protected Constantinople from attack by sea for near 900 years.

      We did break the number one rule of tours though - “never buy from the first shop the guide takes you to”. Turns out we bought some very overpriced chocolates and nuts at the Egyptian Spice Bazaar…about four (identical) shops down they were a third of the price 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

      Dale thought the Hagia Sofia was absolutely breathtaking - so much history, so much engineering. The Blue Mosque was very pretty, and looked much more comfortable as a mosque than Hagia Sofia did, and it was pretty cool getting to see one of the obelisk’s from Karnak - that we only just visited less than 2 months earlier in Egypt.

      I think we all thought the boat ride was pretty cool though. It really brought home how big and actually quite pretty Istanbul is - and showed us where the richy smichies live whilst Taki bf a break from the heat 😜

      Vue depuis le pont de Galata

      Il y a des restos sous le pont qui traverse la Corne d'Or et relie Galata à la partie historique (Stamboul). Au menu shish kebab et plats de poissons. Pas besoin de discuter longtemps pour avoir un discount de 30 à 35 % sur les prix affichés.

      Et au-dessus des pêcheurs attrapent des petits poissons, suspendus par séries de 5 ou 6 tout au long de chaque ligne. On dirait des petites sardines. Ou peut-être plutôt des anchois, qui sont au menu de la plupart des restaurateurs du coin.      Læs mere

      Galata Bridge

      Arriving down the hill across some very busy streets is the Galata Bridge across the Golden Horn, a natural inlet in the Bosphorus River where it meets the Sea of Marmara. The Golden Horn divides “Old Istanbul” (former Byzantium) and the new city to the north. In 1502 Sultan Bayezid II commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to design a bridge to be built at the location of today’s Galata Bridge. However, the Sultan did not approve of da Vinci’s single span design and the bridge was never built. Michelangelo was also invited to design a bridge for the Golden Horn but he declined the project. In 1845 Valide Sultan had the first Galata Bridge built at the mouth of the Golden Horn and called it New Bridge (Cisr-i Atik). This wooden bridge was replaced in 1863 by another wooden bridge. A third bridge on this spot was completed in 1875 and used until 1912 when it was moved upstream to replace the New Bridge. A floating bridge was constructed in 1912 by a German firm but it was damaged by fire in 1992 and taken upstream to make way for the current bridge which was completed in 1994.

      There is a level below the traffic level with some touristy restaurants and stores. From the bridge you can look west to Europe and east across the Bosphorus to Asia and there is a good view of the mosque.

      After you cross the bridge and a large plaza you immediately enter a series of street markets, which are actually the back of the exterior of the Spice Market, on your way up a long hill to the mosque.      Læs mere

      Ich bin zwar völlig im Arsch aber ins Zimmer legen geht jetzt a ned
      War grad ganz allein in einer Moschee.
      Ich habe das Talent den Touristen aus dem Weg zu gehen 😄
      Habe auch noch günstiges Wasser für morgen gekauft. Ned einfach hier. Es gibt alles. Doppelt und dreifach. Aber keine kleinen Läden wo man was kaufen kann. Im Balkan an jeder Ecke.      Læs mere

      Estambul

      La antigua Constantinopla y Bizancio, hoy Estambul, es una ciudad con mucha historia. Muchos imperios se han interesado en su posición estratégica por el estrecho que separa el mar Negro y el mar de Mármara que da salida al Mediterráneo. Este estrecho, el Bósforo, a su vez separa la ciudad en una mitad europea y otra asíatica. Hoy recorrimos la parte europea.

      Aunque muchas religiones han sido la principal en esta ciudad, ahora es el Islam, dejando al cristianismo y al judaismo como minorías.

      Tanto es así, que al bajarnos del metro en la estación Haliç. Sobre un puente que cruza el "cuerno dorado". A simple vista se podían ver unas siete mezquitas mirando hacia el agua, sin contar las más pequeñas que se esconden tras otras estructuras o detrás de los abundantes cerros de la ciudad.

      Al caminar hacia una de ellas, nos topamos con varias más pequeñas, casi cada cuadra tiene una. Una googleada me dijo que en esta ciudad hay más de 3000.

      Hasta ayer creía que Sofia, en Bulgaria, basaba su turismo en las catedrales, pero se queda corta, muy corta en comparación a Estambul. Las mezquitas más grandes tienen filas enormes, incluso con lluvia, y a su alrededor muchas tiendas, cafés, restaurantes, guías turísticos, etc.

      En Bulgaria, Sofia (sveta sofia, santa sabiduría) es una ciudad principalmente ortodoxa, acá en Estambul existe la mezquita Ayasofya o Hagia Sofia que significa lo mismo. Pero no es coincidencia de nombre, es porque antiguamente fue una catedral ortodoxa.

      A unos 100 metros de Ayasofia está la mezquita azul, con seis torres y es otra mezquita más con filas para poder ingresar.

      Estambul, además del turismo religioso, tiene también otros atractivos, como el Bazar de las Especias, que consiste en una gran galería en forma de L construida en 1597. En su interior hay muchos locales de condimentos, variedades de té, dulces, joyas, souvenirs, frutos secos, etc. El aroma era muy agradable y alrededor la galería se extiende en más locales que se fueron formando por la cantidad de visitantes que acude cada día.

      La lluvia nos obligó a hacer rápido el recorrido y llegar temprano al hostal, esperamos que mañana el tiempo nos acompañe para recorrer la parte asiática de la ciudad, es decir, cruzando el Bósforo hacia lo que llaman Anatolia.      Læs mere
