Cornwall and Devon - Part 1

    August 28, 2017 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

    Snapshot
    Where - South West England
    Weather - beautiful

After leaving Cardiff we drove south, basing ourselves in a small village in Devon while we explored the coastal area of Cornwall. The first place was Port Isaac which many people would recognise as Port Wenn from Doc Martin TV series. An absolutely stunning day and the place looked magnificent (even if it was seething with people - still the long weekend )

We also stopped by Tintagel where some of Poldark was filmed (not sure as never watched the show) and also possibly the site of King Arthur's Castle??? This is after driving down some insanely narrow roads where you have to edge your way past oncoming traffic. I think the GPS thinks it is funny to take on all these "short cuts".

I've got to tell you about our Airbnb accommodation. The village was tiny with a few houses and shops around a market square. One pub where we had dinner was entertaining. The locals turn up with an assortment of dogs that just lie around (except for a young springer spaniel that ran around like a mad thing). One lady had a pair of bunny rabbits on leads. Our host was lovely- around 70 and looked 50 and her husband was 80 and still worked as a pharmacist. We had a fantastic time here.

Lunch at Visto Lounge Cafe Bar

    February 11 in the United Kingdom ⋅ 🌬 6 °C

After a very blustery drive we arrived at the hotel around 12.30. We drove through a snow and ice blizzard although alot of the journey was in brillant sunshine. The wipers were having little effect in the blizzard as the snow was freezing onto the windscreen. Our room was ready but we decided to walk straight into to town as Marc was hungry.
We havent been to the Visto louge before, it has a varied menu and we got a window table looking onto the beach and were sat right in the sun, perfect ! Its very cold and windy on the front so nice to enjoy the view whilst feeling warm.

    Biancos Italian restaurant

    February 12 in the United Kingdom ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

This evening we went to Biancos, our favourite restaurant. The first time we came to Torquay, I met an Italian guy in the hotel spa, he works at Biancos and recommended it, we have been going there ever since. We popped in on Tuesday evening to amend the time of our booking. He happened to be there and kindly gave us a 2 for 1 on mains voucher, so even better.
I decided to have one of the specials for my main it had posh italian name, it was tomato pasta stuffed with lobster dressed with prawns in white wine and cream sauce. It was lovely, far to much for me to eat. I dont usually like cream sauces but the waitress said it was a light sauce, which it was. Marc had his usual veal, with vegetables, followed by the lightest tiramisu you have ever had. The chef makes a fresh batch every day.

    The Rock Walk

    February 13 in the United Kingdom ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

By 10.30 the weather had totally changed so we decided to go out rather than use the spa. Marc wanted to go and look at all the big houses on the hillside overlooking Torquay. We got up there via terrace gardens and the rock walk, a twisty path mainly steps which zig zags across the hillside. As we reach the top the rain started, it wasnt to bad, we meandered our way back down to the Visto lounge bar for a well deserved cuppa.
After which we walked along the beach to Preston park before going inside The Grand Hotel for a nosey. It was ok in there but nothing special.
We walked back along the sea front to Torquay before going to Amici for a late lunch. Amici is the sister restaurant to Biancos, they are on opposite sides of the road. Amici is more of an every day italian serving things like pizza, and is open during the day which Bianco's isnt. We have seen it many times but never been in. My contact at Bianco's had given us a 2 for 1 lunch voucher so we thought we might as well give it a try. We absolutely loved it, some of the menu is similar but its cheaper and attracts a different clientele, being more family oriented. We were back in the room before 4pm as Marc was absolutely done in. The room is glorious right in the sun with a lovely view. Marc was asleep within minutes.

    Paignton

    September 15, 2019 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Moving five miles northward to a site in Paignton. Our pitch is in a big holiday resort with pools and sauna etc. The site had been full the night before when we tried to book in, hence our one night stay in Brixham. Site still busy with tourers such as us as well as many staying in lodges and caravans belonging to the site. We have the most amazing view from our pitch of the sea and coastline around Paignton, beautiful to wake up to each morning.
Nice walk into Paington which was everything we expected it to be. We read our books on the beach watching people enjoy swimming in the water. We headed back to the site pool for an evening dip.
We made the most of the facilities on offer, swimming in the indoor pool and using the sauna, steam and hot tub. Very welcome after a long walk including many hills! This is a site we will return to some time, as its location is perfect for us and its facilities just what we need. We are very much enjoying this part of the country, particularly as the sun shines every day at the moment!

    Brixham

    September 14, 2019 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We stayed at a site above Brixham Harbour and walked down into the town in the afternoon. A beautiful little spot and the town was busy. The harbour is full of leisure boats and the odd fishing vessel - somewhat different from its heyday.
No wet fish to be seen for sale but large refrigerated lorries were waiting in the harbour presumably to take the catch from the few remaining commercial fisherman direct to markets elsewhere. There are lots of fish and chip shops doing a good trade.

We walked back up to the site via the harbour, where some seals were frolicking about in the water. Then onto Berry Head and back to the site, prior to enjoying a bbq in the evening sunshine.
