      Ripon - Radlager

      21 mei 2022, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Brompton on Swale to Ingleby Cross

      15 mei, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

This is the longest day I have to hike on this trip. I had shortened it by 7 km by walking longer yesterday but it was still a punishing 30 km of walking flat on roads and through some incredibly muddy paths. Very poorly posted. There was no drying room at the Frenchgate hotel and the newspaper didn't cut it to dry out the boots so I ended up hiking in wet boots that got wetter as the day progressed. I developed blisters on the planter aspect of my fourth toes. I will try the trail runners tomorrow. My right trapezius is also bothering me. Despite the long walk today I did enjoy myself. Beautiful churches in Bolton on Swale and Denby Wiske. Some very friendly domestic animals which all seem very intent on smelling me. I finally saw Highland cattle in Northern England of all places. The craziest thing at the end of the day was having to run across a significant two lane highway the size of the QE2. It was the only way across. There was a service station nearby and I asked if there was any safer way and there wasn't. The teller's advice was to wait for a break and run to the median. Madness just madness. Probably the most dangerous part of the whole trip. I am staying at the Blue Bell Inn where I met up with Nick the school teacher that I met on my way to Keld. We had an early dinner and are both turning in for an early night.Meer informatie

      The World of James Herriot

      19 september 2023, Engeland ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

World of James Herriot Ltd is a visitor attraction in the former Thirsk home and veterinary surgery of author James Herriot.

Displays include recreations of James Herriots 1940s flat; depictions of rural life and veterinary practice at the time, together with sets and props used for the 1978 BBC All Creatures Great and Small television series based on his books.

      This was so cool.

Housesitting @ North York Moors NP

      2 september 2023, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We spent one week housesitting in Thornton-Le-Moor, a small village close to Northallerton. It was so nice to have our own house for a while, especially with the three best dogs: Dillon, Pablo & Leo! We explored the nearby North York Moors, played with the dogs in the huge garden, baked muffins that Dillon immediately ate & enjoyed staying at home!Meer informatie

      Ingle Cross to Clay Bank

      16 mei, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

I was in a bit of a cloud today. No I didn't have brain fog I was literally walking through the fog/ cloud all day today. The weather prediction last night had been favorable however it was lightly raining this morning and it picked up just as I was leaving the Blue Bell Inn. Nick the teacher who was walking twice the distance that I was to Blackney Ridge so he got a very early start. He shouted into the pub where I was breakfasting a hearty good bye. I saw a sign to Thirsk 12 miles leaving town and thought of James Herriot who lived in Thirsk as well as our neighbors Warren and Tanya Thirsk. The walk today navigated through the Yorkshire moors-non cultivated elevated areas that are uncultivated and covered in Heather. The path was up and down but had a very respectable 500 metre elevation gain. In areas it supposedly commanded some pretty impressive views. Today the moors were engulfed in a very very thick fog and visibility during the day was reduced to 10 to 15 metres. I encountered some other hikers but if they weren't talking one would only realize at the last moment that one had come up on them. A bit spooky. I met a Dutch couple and 2 English couples. The one English couple were doing the C2C in 16 days but were accompanied by their 8 year old Dauschound dog Dexter. He seemed to be doing fine but they said he had been in a grumpy mood that morning. The couple not Dexter took my photo from one of the high points where on a good day you could see the North Sea. I couldn't see anything. The hike was short at only 10 miles but I needed an easy day after yesterday. Highlights were talking to the other hikers, flushing grouse out of the heather, my lunch a 4 thousand year old burial cairn. I did a lot of stretching last night and this morning and changed my backpack set up a little. I think this helped the trapezius. I think a combination of the pack and having to look down so much to watch for the footing is irritating it. I put bandaids on the blisters and wore my running shoes today so the blisters didn't worsen. My boots are still damp. I have them in the boiler room at the Wainstone hotel right now and hopefully they will dry out. When I got to the Wainstones which I could hardly see, I called the Wainstone hotel in Great Boughton and the owner came and picked me up in Clay Bank which was the end of my hike for the day. The C2C today joined with the Cleveland Way today and was a superbly maintained trail with many segments consisting of large stones. After yesterday, it was great having no mud. They are calling for better weather tomorrow so hopefully we will have a more exciting day.Meer informatie

      225/300

      24 september 2023, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      Tag 13/22 oder Plan B 2/5
      Km 20/25

Mein Essenstiming diesen Urlaub scheint mir miserable.

      Harrogate Expands and Develops

      16 juli 2022, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

Harrogate still attracts lots of visitors. Many do use the two remaining spas for steam treatments, massages, manicures, etc. The concert hall was formerly named Kursaal, but during WWI that German name was changed to Royal Hall. There is lots of shopping, restaurants, tea shops, gorgeous architecture, and of course the gardens. The Yorkshire Dales National Park is close, for exploring and hiking. One could spend a lot of time here!

Our housesit is only about 1 mile from the town center, easily walkable, except for all the hills! For all this, we are taking care of two loving cats. A pretty good deal!

      Knaresborough: Castle and Beautiful View

      28 juni 2022, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Knaresborough is famous for its beautiful railroad viaduct over the River Nidd. The grounds around the castle ruins are a park, used for many things, including lawn bowling.

There is a market square with some benches to rest in the sunshine. Two statues of historical people sit on the bench. One is Mother Shipton, England's most famous prophetess, who was born in 1488, Because of being taunted for her looks, bent back, and twisted legs, she lived in the cave in which she was born. Many of her prophesies did come true, and she was famous.

Another statue is of Blind Jack. Even though he was blinded by smallpox at ate 6, he could play the fiddle, swim, dive, climb trees, play cards, drive a delivery wagon and stagecoach, and more. He is famous as a civil engineer, having built 180 miles of turnpike roads (including across bogs) mainly in Northern England.

      Open Gardens in Marton-cum-Grafton

      26 juni 2022, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Lucky me to be here on Open Garden Day! There were over 20 gardens on display, I was surprised how large the lots were! Many had beautiful views of the hills beyond.

There was lunch at the village hall, games and face-painting on the greens, a classic car display, music by the pub, an art show, and an afternoon tea by the Women's Institute, a women's club that has members ages 30-80! It all benefited the school, church, and community.Meer informatie

      Brimham Rocks National Trust

      21 juli 2022, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

These giant rock formations have interesting shapes and many have been named. The panoramic views are beautiful, which is why it is called an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

There was a large school group visiting, and they wore helmets so they were probably learning climbing skills.Meer informatie
