A great day exploring Clifton Downs Suspension Bridge and tracing family history in Shirehampton Bristol . Nanna Ewin( Victoria may Britt ) lived with her family in "Myrtle Cottage" Hung road Shirehampton in her twenties . Grandad Ewin met her there on his leave from world war 1 in France . There is a communty garden called "Myrtyle Hall "which is a local commuity of garden plots nearbye.
Victoria worked at the Clifton Fry's chocolate factory in 1918 whe she met Hilton . We found a plaque in the main city of Bristol marking the spot where the factory stood from 1726 until 1935...

    Thali Tea

    December 8, 2015 in the United Kingdom ⋅ 🌧 6 °C

I suppose British think walking down the street to the cafe for some evening tea is no big deal. Make a right here, turn left there and tada! Oh but wait, we are Americans and a nice walk for us is WAY shorter than the directions we have been given from both sets of hosts. The first time was in the village of West Horsley...yeah, we turned back around after a half - hour walking and was no where near the pub we were directed to for dinner. We were starving, it was pitch black, run our of sidewalk and street lights and went back without our supper that night. This evening in Bristol, after arriving 2 hrs later than expected due to the awful/scary/narrow lanes in rush hour traffic, we were once again directed a right here, left there and again no tada! It was a LONG way, like 2 miles through back alleys and over walking bridges, before we reached our destination for tea.
    Yet tea we did enjoy!
    Great local place :)

    June 23, 2019 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Read more

    Bristol & Wales day 28 Sun 20 May 2018

    May 20, 2018 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Left Porlock in Somerset before 9am and drove to Bristol in the county of Bristol. Saw Brunel’s Clifton bridge linking Clifton In Bristol with Leigh Woods in Somerset across the Avon Gorge, as we drove in. Parked the car and walked to the upper inland lock of the floating harbour. The floating harbor separated from the Avon River was constructed to overcome port limitations imposed by a high tidal range. Walked downstream from the inland lock and had a beer in a floating pub. Drove to Caerphilly Castle in South Wales and Yvonne took photos as I had Ieft my cameras in the car. Then drove on to Brecon Beacon Guesthouse which is under new ownership from when I made my booking. Dinner in the George Hotel (Wetherspoon) in Brecon where a member of staff gave us directions to the start of the walk we wanted to do tomorrow.Read more

    January 14, 2020 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

We are in Bristol for a quick visit to see Kirsty and Matt prior to our trip to Australia.
Filthy weather along the M4 on Tuesday but we arrived safely and Kirsty came to join us in the evening. The fizz was opened.
Sun shining on Wednesday so we had an enjoyable walk through the city and up Gloucester Road where we had a nice lunch at Baker and Co. Karen found some materials for her proposed Australian sewing project.
Posting some pictures of Bristol from a previous visit when we we took a street art tour.
We enjoyed a great authentic Indian meal at Chai Shai with Kirsty and Matt, a most enjoyable evening.

    August 13, 2019 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Two days in Bristol at Baltic Wharf, a great site in the heart of the city.
We caught up with Kirsty and her boyfriend Matt and enjoyed a fabulous meal on a boat in the floating harbour. Great to see Kirsty so happy and to meet Matt for the first time.
The next day we visited Bath as the forecast was not too great and enjoyed a rummage around the shops for a short time. K and K particularly wanted to visit the Sewing Studio which we found eventually.
Weather cleared nicely for a bbq in the evening.
Karen was finally able to present Kirsty with her quilt, promised to her on her 30th birthday. It was well worth waiting for and gratefully and enthusiastically received.
