Day One .. In London. . Is Done

      July 11, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Well, if you only have 6 days in London, you want to go hard.... so we did. The day started off with breakfast in the apartment and then we were riding the subway down to Buckingham Palace. We toured around the outside for a bit and then we walked the mall down to Trafalgar Square. It was just cool sites after cool sites... so what did we decide to do next..... the M&M store.

We also stopped and got same day cheap..er tickets to see "The Mousetrap".. the longest continuous running play ever. Going on 70 years now.

With that purchased, we went to do lunch. We saw a Sherlock Pub so we decided to try there. But when we opened up the menu, it was identical to the Beehive Inn in Edinburgh, where we ate on our last day. I mean.... identical. It must be owed by the same company. So we decided to go elsewhere. We ended up at this Italian restaurant that had wood fired pizzas and bruscetta, and spaghetti. It was wonderful.

Then bit more wandering until we ended up at the British Museum. What a cool place. We saw the Rosetta Stone, a bunch of Greek statues, some clocks, and we finally found the chess pieces Evan has been obsessed about since Dublin. He was pretty excited.

After that we headed back to the apartment to have a quick bite to eat and refresh a bit before the play. It was a hot day today and we sure sweat a lot so it was good to relax and have a shower.

Then we were off to the show. We were on the third balcony and seating was tight, but we could see the play fine and it was a lot of fun. One of the rules about Mousetrap is, you can't talk about Mousetrap so we will leave it at that. But go if you get the chance.

Then it was riding the underground at night back to our place and off to bed.

Today we clocked in 24,673 steps. Pretty good for such a hot day. Hopefully we walk a bit less tomorrow. But... we shall see.

      Until then.

      London

      August 1, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

      Goedemorgen London!

(Ik heb to-go koffie duidelijk gemist in Italië)

The walk continued :) The building with the green roof is the Australian "embassy," the interior of which was used for Gringotts in the Harry Potter movies. The timber-framed building is one of the few to have survived the fire.Read more

      London

      April 23, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

At 6 in the morning we got up to travel to London. The Bus was on time so was the train. At London King's Cross we found ourselves on a very long escalator. Our guide guided us towards the queens residence. Sadly she wasn't at home, so we were not able to meet her. We walked through St. James Park and saw some ducks. Later we met them again in a Chinese restaurant. We saw Big Ben, the westminster and the house of parlament. The guide learned us some vocab to describe a notorious lier, one of which is Boris Johnson. We walked to Covet Garden were we were allowed to spend 4 hours on ourselves. Finn forced us to go to the Supreme store with him. After that we walked through the china town. We mistook the London Opera for a shopping mall, and just walked in. Later we gathered at covet garden again and met Len from Oxford. After chatting a bit with him we walked to the british museum. Unfortunately, we saw the queue before we saw the museum and therefore decided not to waste our time waiting to go in. Alternatively, we went to see the enormous St.Pauls cathedral and the millennium bridge. Eventually all good times have to end and so we had to go back to Kings Cross to board the train back to Cambridge. At the station we were reminded that we are still in the UK as all the trains were either delayed an cancelled.Read more

Georgia Ohrdorf and the busy day

      June 28, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Today I woke up and got ready so I could go to work with Kate. She was headed to facilitate some high school sessions in Windsor and I decided to be a tourist for the morning. I walked to Windsor Castle which was under repair unfortunately then I walked the long walk which is a path leading up to the castle. It was a classic dreary British morning but not too cold. The path was very busy and heaps of cars with tinted windows were driving past. I'm choosing to believe there were at least a few important people that drove past. I didn't find out what was going on unfortunately. I then walked down to the Thames and sat for a bit but then it started raining, so I went to the train station where I was meeting Kate to head into London.
We jumped on the train and then met Brooklan at another station. The train trip was about an hour, so not bad at all. We then took the underground to the theatre district. We stopped at a Wetherspoons for a drink before we walked to the Palace Theatre. We went to see Harry Potter and the cursed child which was broken into 2 parts. We walked up what felt like 1000 stairs and over to our seats. We literally had to lean forward to completely see the stage as we were up so high and blocked by bars, the seats were also meant for much smaller humans than us 3. Once the play started however you forgot as it was so very good. The actors were amazing and the special effects were incredible, it really felt magical. The first part finished up and we headed into Chinatown for dinner.
London was absolutely packed full of humans, so busy. We picked a place and it was good, I struggled with chopsticks which was fun.
We found another Wetherspoons and had another drink before returning for part 2. On the way in the security guard heard our accents and was telling us about what was different in the Melbourne show and the UK show which was interesting. The second part was just as good as the first and I'd forgotten how good the story is. We were so glad we went, however it was already 9:30 and we still had a 1.5 hour journey home. The train was quiet and we got some snacks for the trip which made it go quicker. We got back around 11:30 and all headed off to bed exhausted. I felt so happy as I had seen and experienced so much today!

Harry Potter Waking Tour London 🏰

      August 28, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Read more
