Covent Garden, Westminster & St James 🌼

      August 10, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

      London Transport Museum

      September 13, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Woke up to no water today in South London. Very unpleasant so we are going to spend the day in London where water is a plenty. Eventually the water came back online and we were all able to have showers. Once we destinkafied, we all headed out.

Maegan and Enzo went to Adam and Berta’s house to help them with wedding stuff. We made our way to the London Transport Museum. This exhibits the history of public transport in London from horses to the present day buses and Tube. It is located in the old flower markets in Covent Garden, where a scene from My Fair Lady was filmed.

We started back in time when the horse drawn carriage was on the scene carrying passengers around London. This progressed to the horse drawn Omnibus where more passengers could be moved around the town therefore making it more affordable to people. From here it grew and other types of transport were tried but was not as reliable or able to carry as many passengers as the horse drawn vehicles.

Then came along the train which was disruptive to the houses so it was decided to have the train routes below ground- the Tube was born as Londoners main transport. It was so interesting to see the old modes of transportation and we could sit in some of the carriages and rails cars to see what it was like many years ago.

After the Transport Museum we did a spot of shopping in the Covent Markets, Dan again had a good day buying himself a very nice leather satchel. We wandered around the Covent Garden Area before getting a cab to Adams house for an evening nibble and to meet Burta’s parents who have come over from Spain for the wedding tomorrow. Such lovely people.

We have a big day tomorrow so will try to get a good nights rest.

      Covent Garden

      April 29, 2018 in England ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

      British Museum, National Galleries plus

      April 21, 2019 in England ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

It was a jam-packed and fun- filled day. Did you know that London still has telephone booths? I like that. I got to the famous British Museum and took their highlights (audio) tour. The Rosetta Stone is located just inside. I honestly didn’t understand what the big deal was about the stone. I didn’t realized it had the same text in a language that was already known/understood as the hieroglyphics written above it. Aha!

As I walked around the ruins and artifacts, I annoyingly saw them as, “hey, look what the British Empire stole from around the globe”. Chunks of the Parthenon, Egyptian mummies (which creep me out - they are dead people who thought that they would not be dug up and on display), Chinese pottery (how on earth did these delicate items survive?), Buddhist statutes, a feast of history, culture and symbology. After two hours of wandering around, I was full up.

I walked to Covent Gardens. Mr. Sunny has been working overtime here so the market was bustling with tons of people. It was fun. It is nice to be here on a holiday weekend. It brings out the crowds but it’s fun to see everyone out enjoying their city.

Next stop was the National Portrait Gallery. The last 70 years of portraits present such a hodgepodge of people who have influenced British society, politics and culture. Elton John, Twiggy, Nelson Mandela as a middle-aged man, Winston Churchill destroyed his official portrait so they only had a study, Margaret Thatcher, and of course, Queen Elizabeth with one of her corgis were all there. The rest of the halls were all white men. And since I’m not well schooled in many British dignitaries, I skipped them.

I passed by the Royal Opera House and flirted with getting a ticket but I just couldn’t do it - I’m just a bit too jet lagged. Trafalgar Square was my next stop. A giant stone square with fountains and lots of statues. I went in to the National Gallery right on the square. Their highlights audio tour included 80 paintings - mercifully a good 20 of them were not on display. I dutifully went to all of them and started with the exquisite art pieces from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries. I find that I love the learning as much as the looking. I was chased out at 5:30pm.

A cozy French restaurant drew me in for a three course meal and a glass of Cote du Rhône. The creme caramel was a creamy, sweet end to my day.

      I’m tired.

      I Emerged in London Rain

      November 9, 2016 in England ⋅ 🌧 45 °F

We hadn't been inside Covent Garden Market for more than several minutes but when we came out it was raining. Rain and dampness is something to be expected in London and I don't really mind it. If anything, different kinds of weather can give a city an entire new look.Read more

      A mooch around Covent Garden

      February 4, 2023 in England

From Stanfords, we walked up to Covent Garden and popped into the Nag's Head, ostensibly to use the loo, but we had to have a quick cider while we were there!

We also walked around the craft market and paused to watch some of the street performers - one of my favourite activities whenever I'm in London.Read more
