      Schöner wohnen im Schloss

      July 11, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

      Day of birth

      December 17, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

We started off the morning in the usual way, with a coffee and some biscuits. We then called and spoke to our respective families because it's Phill's birthday today! As well as my dad's, so we had rounds of 'happy birthdays' before setting off towards our next destination.

We made our way to Winchester where we had an explore and enjoyed the local Christmas market before hitting the road again and making our way to Bishopstoke where we enjoyed Phills big birthday meal at none other then Toby's Carvery!

We had plates bigger than our stomachs loaded up with 4 different kinds of meats and lots of sides.

We rolled ourselves out of the beautiful establishment and checked into our accommodation in Southampton where a bottle of bubbles and a room upgrade awaited us.

We lazed about and utilised the washing machine in the room while watching an off-brand Australian Gordon Ramsay.

In the evening we went on a drive to a horror movie themed bar Ripper & Co which served fancy cocktails. After that we went home and jumped into bed!

      Mottisfont Gardens

      June 12, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Jane drove us to Stockbridge which is south of Compton. We went to Mottisfont which is a magnificent National Trust house and garden. This house was crafted from a priory founded in 1201 and set in a beautiful riverside gardens which later became a country home of Maud Russell - married to a rich banker. The garden was blooming with beautiful flowers and it seemed at its best. We had scones with tea etc and walked around for ages looking a lovely flowers mainly. Craig and I also had a look at the house which is simpler than most but still lovely. Mottisfont is a spring and there was certainly plenty of water there.Read more

      Becoming Jane

      July 10, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

      Winchester Wander

      August 11, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

After a late start to the day, trip planning for the September trip to the Faroe Islands, we decided to explore Winchester. We had been warned to avoid the train station area due to the Boomtown music festival happening nearby.

A 25 minute drive found us to the multi-storey parkade, just east of High Street. We were quick to leave the parkade due to a blaring car alarm that its owner couldn't quiet 😭...

We wandered into a park where the local council hosts "Fabulous Family Friday's". The park was set up with various children activities, and the weather was perfect for outdoor fun.

Eventually we exited Abbey Gardens park and found our way to the Cathedral rear access. It was very tranquil in the passage through the Watergate access. As with most of the old English Cathedrals, the grandiose architecture and engineering is always stunning and impressive.

After walking around the Cathedral grounds, we found our way to the old castle grounds, and remaining Great Hall and West Gate structures. The Castle that had been built in 11th Century after the Norman conquest, and later upgraded in 13th century, but was mostly reduced to rubble during the English Civil War in the 17th century. The rest of the grounds has various aged buildings used by the Winchester City Administration, with the newest buildings being the Law Courts.

Although the kingdom administraton moved to London in the 11th century, Winchester still played an important role in legal affairs and the treasury till the 13th century.

We finished our tour of Winchester with a wander down the famous High Street, which hosts a street market four days a week.

Once back at the house, A fired up the BBQ and we feasted on steak and veggies outside. It was an enjoyable warm evening on the patio.

      Rule Britannia

      July 9, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

      Hardhat Diver’s Labor of Love

      June 13, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

In the early 1900s, Winchester Cathedral was sinking. A man named William Walker singlehandedly save the building by donning his hardhat diving gear and spending hours underneath it in the mucky sludge to save it. This dangerous task was a labor of love.

It took him five years, from 1906 to 1911, to complete this Herculean task. As you can see, there’s a bust in his honor as well as a pub named after him near Winchester Cathedral.

Highclere Castle and Home to Casa Burget

      June 20, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

The next morning we called Home James to take us to Highclere. We enjoyed the introduction and guided tour of Highclere and the included lunch was good but too much food for us. Home James took us into Newbury where most of hotels were booked and we finally settled on the last room at the Chequers Hotel: the Honeymoon Suite! The room was initially hot and Nancy was feeling that a basic boring North American style hotel with aircon was looking pretty good instead of quaint English ones. We were to find out later that England was experiencing the hottest June on record. We both agreed that Highclere was worth a visit; it is unfortunately not easy to get to unless you are driving. The next day we had a smooth trip into Heathrow thanks to finally learning to say "yes" to being disabled and requiring a ramp. Plane travel with West Jet was uneventful and we arrived home safe, sound and travel worn. Jan stayed at Casa Burget for three days before going back home.Read more
