9 Tage vor unserer Abreise von Halifax haben wir noch Zeit für 3 Tage Relaxing — und sind nun am Moosehead Lake in Maine, einem Tipp von unseren hamburger Freunden folgend. Und dieser See ist wahrlich Traum - und wir hatten auch noch Traumwetter, haben in einem Blockhaus direkt (!) am See gewohnt und hatten eine super nette Gruppe als Nachbarn, die uns an ihr Lagerfeuer eingeladen haben :))Read more

845 miles travelled

Picked up the car from Montreal airport and had an unremarkable journey along the trans-Canadian highway through Quebec to New Brunswick where we changed time zones. The only thing to note was that when we did stop for coffee and a break. French is the dominate language. Unlike Montreal which is largely bilingual. On arrival at Edmundston our home for the night. We drove across the river and after formalities at the border post we were back in America, Why? I needed to pick up a geocache in Maine. I left Heather in a McDonalds with free WiFi. But she didn’t need it as it’s the local gossip hotspot for the small town of Madawaska and I went to pick up a cache. Couldn’t find the first one, neither the second. Getting panicky. I wanted to colour in Maine on my geocaching website. Third attempt got close but had to retrace my steps as I came across a ‘no trespassing’ sign. Eventually arrived at the coordinates and looked around for some minutes. Found it, panic over. The container was a plastic pine cone attached to a pine tree in a wood that hadn’t been found for over a year. Signed the log, picked up Heather. Took a photo of us in Maine then scrambled back to Canada over the metal grid decking bridge that buzzed as we drove across and on to our bed for the night.Read more

Hikers summitted!

Received a text just now that our hikers have reached the summit of Mt.Katahdin! Congrats to our hikers for climbing the tallest mountain in Maine!

Last night we were not sure if this feat would be possible as we learned of two changes since the last time Angus and Sarah hiked Katahdin.
1) Campers are not allowed on Baxter State Park roads making getting to a trailhead a challenge. (To be honest, this could have been a rule for a while. This is simply the first time we have been here with a camper.)
2) You now need a permit to hike ANY of the trails up Katahdin!!! What?!?! This absolutely NEVER occurred to us as every other time we simply arrived, camped (that we did know you need to reserve) and hiked. Oh boy, were we in a double bind.

So, we talked to the owners of the Wilderness Edge Campground where we are staying and they gave us one of their three passes, that can be used any time up Abol or the Hunt trail, and drove our hikers in this morning at 5:30!!! They will be picking them up later this afternoon as well. Problem solved!!! Hooray to nice people! -Don't worry, we did pay them, but sooo worth it for this unforgettable experience! Hikers decided on the smoother Hunt Trail to the newly designed Abol Trail that just opened after a rockslide.

Patrick and Sarah have manned the fort checking out the water supply in the camper, getting mani/pedi's and playing with some more "new" trains. Had to move some couch cushions to make our mega train, so fun!Read more

Day 6, Ontario to New Brunswick

We started the day in Ontario and we're now in New Brunswick! It's been a long week and this feels like a big accomplishment!

We arrived at our booked motel as planned and on schedule. We had no car trouble and the room/motel is nice. At this point things going according to plan is as unexpected as anything we've seen up to this point!

The drive was more scenic than we'd planned. While driving through Montreal I took a wrong turn and we ended up driving through the city center! Thanks to Kimberleys fantastic navigation skills we winded through the city, crossed some spectacular bridges and were back on track in no time.

It was interesting seeing the climate change as we drove. In Montreal it was spring with some green grass showing, but as we headed NE through Quebec it got snowier first in little patches until we were seeing fields wholly covered in snow. It was also quite a sight to see the St. Lawrence River, narrow enough to cross in Montreal and eventually so wide we couldn't see across it.

Checked into our motel at 8pm local time the nearby restaurants were already closed so we had junk food picnic for dinner 😋

Just 2 more days to go. We could do a full day drive to Truro and then just have an easy 2.5h drive saturday, or we can do 4h half day drives both days with an overnight in Moncton. We'll probably push for Truro, we're so close now I think were too excited to stop early in Moncton! but time will tell.
