      Zwei National Parks in Wisconsin

      October 11, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

      July 22, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Day 2 We Learn About Madeline Island

      July 30, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We learned so much about the early inhabitants of this beautiful island at the museum. We liked the State Park, but were completely charmed by the lagoon at Big Bay Town Park. Capped off the evening with smores at sunset. And Ian found a really big toad who made it clear he did NOT have his sights set on domestication. So he returned to his log after a couple exciting hours in Ian's care.Read more

      Back to the USofA

      August 29, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We made it to Schiphol in plenty of time to visit one of the airport lounges that we've grown habituated to.
Unfortunately they were booked so we hit Starbucks for an hour before they opened up again. A couple of flat whites and all was in good order. Boarding was a full hour and a half before the scheduled departure. What? Turns out we were on one of the new double decker planes. Boarding and deplaning is compounded with separate loading bays attached to each floor. Other than that the nine hour flight to O'Hare was effortless.

We arrived in Chicago the night before Nancy's birthday. I'd put in some effort to find a hotel that offered a shuttle service with a van big enough to carry both bike boxes and spendy enough that Nance would feel like she was waking up somewhere special. As we turned into the parking lot of the 'Four Points by Sheraton' I realized I'd been hoodwinked. Good reviews and marketing images couldn't hide the fact that I'd picked another hotel that was past prime, at the end of its shelf life, and had seen its expiration date some years before. Bummer. We spent the evening putting our bikes back together in a small airport hotel room and stumbling around in the haze of jetlag.

Next morning we caught a Lyft to our camper, it started right up, and we drive north to the Door Peninsula in eastern Wisconsin. Along the way we passed the towns of Belgium and Brussels. The churches and a few of the homes bore a striking similarity to those found in Flanders. The main difference was that there were actually plenty of parishioners attending in the States. Probably 100 cars in the rural church parking lot.

Next day we woke and took a 30 mile bike ride up the coast of the peninsula. Things are pretty pleasant here and these Wisconsinites are Minnesota friendly. This afternoon a cafe owner spent a good twenty minutes listing the places we shouldn't go to have dinner. Once back at the campground I swung by the Park Store to grab a post ride beer. The lady behind the counter said that beer could only be purchased in sixes or twelves. The customer behind me in the line listened to the conversation and said, 'Here, take one of mine.' Pretty nice.

Spent the last two nights in a camground in Copper Harbor of Michigan's Upper Peninsula recommended by Nancy's brother John. There were lots of mountain bike trails to choose from. We rode north toward the end of the peninsula but were stopped a bit short when the road turned into a muddy bog. Tonight we're ensconced in Copper Falls State Park with plans for a pancake breakfast at the Park concession and another ride in the am.

This part of America is pretty rough. Far northern towns are sparse. Calumet Michigan was particularly harsh. Many of the wooden buildings are rotting and in bad need of paint or a complete teardown. The old stone buildings are visibly crumbling away. It is a ghost town that hasn't yet come to terms with its fate. These towns are similar to those one finds in northern New York on the edges of the Adirondacks or in Maine away from the coast. It's not hard to imagine people feeling pretty left behind in these towns and willing to do anything in the voting booth to retaliate in some way. Voting for a lowlife reality TV show star might be the ticket to relieve both the boredom and bitterness. Their preachers tell them that God works in mysterious ways through sinners as well as saints. I guess they feel part of a winning team even while the populist coach is pushing them to play while injured, selling off their uniforms, and firing their team physician.

This being rural America the churches run the gamut with odd messages and interesting spiritual displays. I think I'll start a collection of photos depicting American Christianity's more mind bending messages. See photos...

Perhaps another bike ride tomorrow will alleviate some of the angst of being back in the USofA.

      Hriberniks!

      August 13, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

We decided to chance a FC/FS spot on a Friday afternoon. Never a good idea. The first two cg’s in Ashland were full. So was the one we checked in Washburn, WI BUT they had a cheap overflow camping area with awesome views. Old friends on their way to Isle Royal NP stopped in for a random visit. So much fun to see old friends in this small town on the coast of Lake Superior. In the morning, we enjoyed the lake, took a bike ride to the other FCFS campground to check it out, and did some outdoor strength training, & filled up on fancy outdoor water (artesian well) in our CG. I realized that checking out CGs is my thing. I think it’s b/c I do so much research and reading of reviews. I want to scope out other CGs to make sure I made the right choice. 😂 In this case, all the FCFS CGs in Ashland or Washburn are terrific choices. Oh, I almost forgot the BEST PART which is we saw Santa! Maddie sweetly asked him if he was Santa on vacation. He chuckled and said why yes I am. Have you been good this year? ❤️💚❤️💚Read more

      Wash day in Washburn, Wis

      June 11, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

Woke up to a gray, foggy morning as opposed to the crystal blue skies we had yesterday. We had only been able to get one night's stay at the campground so had to pack up and move up to the site we found for the next two nights. We were sorry to go, this campground was nice, great staff, nicely wooded and just outside of Bayfield.
Once we were on the road up the highway the rain let loose. Just came slamming down. But only for only 10 minutes or so, and then just a more steady drizzle. By the time we got to our new site it had stopped. But because of the weather, and gambling on a better day tomorrow, we bailed on plans to take the ferry to Madeline Island and decided we really needed to get some laundry done.
New site is at a casino, and while the sites are just pedestals in the grass, our site is right on lake superior, no trees to even impede the view! Instead of backing in, we drove straight in so we would have the view on our big front picture window. Grabbed our laundry and headed back south past Bayfield to Washburn to get it done.
Washburn is one of the few towns with a laundry, all Electrlux machines, but it was the most expensive wash day ever. 3 big loads, we had linens, we had spent just over $20! Usually we spend about $10. Ouch!
Stopped at Cocos for lunch, an artisan bakery, yum. Double decker grilled ham and Wisconsin cheddar on wheat, yum, yum! Picked up a pastie and bacon cheddar Mac and cheese for dinner, oh, and dessert rhubarb bread pudding for Tom and a lemon bar for me, yum, yum, yum!
Drove thru some orchards and took a brief walk at Beaver Hollow, hoping to see some wildlife. So many mosquitos that I hated to even stop to take a picture. Just kept walking and flailing my arms so they wouldn't land. Hopped in the jeep with at least a dozen joining us....
Back to the RV and just enjoyed our view of the lake. We are parked in a channel around an island so we see sail boats, fishing boats, ferries, kayaks and paddleboards... and of course lots of geese with their flock of goslings. Darling!

First Full Day on Madeline Island

      July 29, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Rustic surrounds, mega leech in our backyard, riding bikes to Grant's Point (a nearly private beach on Lake Superior), and a rivoting story-telling sesh on the back porch.

      Leaving Apostle Islands

      July 31, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Last couple days in the area were filled with kayaking, cliff jumping, lot's of lake swimming and family time! Took a lighthouse and shipwreck cruise off of Bayfield on our way out.

      75 degrees in Bayfield, Wisconsin

      June 10, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Drove pretty much due north on the interstate today, so travel distance and time was brisk. Back on county highway as we got further north, AND the weather started cooling off. When we got to Bayfield it was a refreshing 75 degrees with a light, cool breeze. Perfect! Spent a little bit of time solving housing, because this area is very popular...but we do have housing for the next 3 nights.
This is a darling costal lake town and there is tons to do here. Kayaking is one of the biggies because they have an abundance of sea caves. Sailing, hiking, biking, paddleboards, mopeds, island hopping, shopping and eating to name a few.
We had lunch out by the marina, enjoying the whitefish that is common in the great lakes. Delicious, tender and mild. Then just spent the afternoon making arrangements for some planned activities the next couple of days and just walking the downtown area visiting their marine museum and window shopping. Beautiful day to be outside!

      Apostles Islands Cruise

      June 12, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Got up and going this morning for the Apostles Islands cruise. It was a beautiful weather day, blue skies, warm sun, and a great steady little breeze. We were in line by 9 to get seats we wanted, so that meant we were first in line. Coffee shop close by, so we could tag team waiting. Boat boarded at 9:45 and we got seats on the back deck which seemed good at the time, but by the end of the cruise you begin to notice the diesel engine smell. Not bad, just a little noticeable.
But because we were first in line we were rewarded with this nice little photo book of the islands, so it was worth the hour wait, at least I think so!
Great cruise, great narrator, couple of cheesy jokes, but nice view, and history, of the islands. Only draw back is that I had expected to see more of the "ice caves", like you see in the photo of lighthouse. Mostly you see slightly carved, low cliffs that are heavily wooded. Saw several eagles, and one large eagle nest. And we saw two lighthouses (out of 8 total) and one fish camp. Several of the islands are accessible in the winter with ice roads... lots of fishing activities.
Back to Bayfield about noon or so, had a great lunch in a little bistro, more whitefish for us. And then we got to walk the area because they were having their garden tour that day. We didn't do the whole thing but hit about a half dozen homes, inns, or B&Bs that keep up their gardens. Just a nice way to end the day with such beautiful weather.
Finished the day with a great shower... because of Covid, you get the whole room (2 showers, 3 toilet stalls) to yourself. You just have to sign up for a 30 min. time slot. Spent the evening watching the lake traffic with the binoculars!
