      Monument Valley

      Direkt nach dem Sonnenaufgang ging es zum Monument Valley. Der Park wird von den Navajo-Indianern betrieben. Durch den Park führt eine Straße, an der die ganzen Aussichtspunkte liegen, die zum Teil aber ganz schön uneben war. Respekt für den Fahrer des Mustang Cabrios!😅
      Die Felsen haben zum Teil sehr absurde Formen und man fragt sich, wie die überhaupt noch stehen können. Das Licht am Morgen mit der tiefstehenden Sonne war sehr schön, um Fotos zu machen.
      Das Monument Valley war übrigens auch Drehort für einige John Wayne Filme.
      Insgesamt wirkten die Felsen aus der Entfernung aber noch beeindruckender, als wenn man direkt davor stand. Auf der Straße liefen auch immer mal wieder Hunde oder Pferde herum, die den Navajos gehören, die oft Verlaufsstände an den Aussichtspunkten haben.
      Im Anschluss ging es 2,5h Richtung Norden nach Moab.      Read more

      Monument Valley 2

      John Ford’s Point - Hier hat man die Möglichkeit ein Foto mit Pferd 🐴 machen zu lassen. Das arme Pferd, erst wollten wir nicht. Ich mag ja Pferde überhaupt nicht und dann tut mir das Tier auch echt leid. Doch wir hatten hier eine deutsche Fotogruppe getroffen. Und dadurch hatten wir das große Glück überhaupt diese Fotos von uns zu bekommen. Wir hatten uns immer wieder bei den einzelnen Stationen wiedergetroffen und wirklich viel Spaß zusammen.
      Ich zitiere Andreas:
      Mehr als 6 Monate Arbeit im Jahr passt nicht in mein Lifestyle!!!
      Mega, so herzlich, es war uns wirklich eine große Freude mit der Truppe.

      Ansonsten hat man wirklich keine Chance an das Bild zu kommen. Über den Preis und das Missverständnis mit dem Navajopferdebesitzer dazu, reden wir nicht. Es steht in der Urlaubskasse unter Sonderausgaben. 😫😫😫      Read more

      Welcome to the Wild West

      Monument Valley -> Grand Canyon

      Unter einem tollen Sternenhimmel fahren wir ganz früh von unserem Camp Ground los, um den Sonnenaufgang im Monument Valley zu sehen. Die Landschaft scheint vor allem in der Dämmerung, wie von einem anderen Planeten.
      Anschließend fahren wir über eine Straße voller tiefer Schlaglöcher den Monument Valley Loop (auf dem man maximal 25 km/h fahren soll) alle Sehenswürdigkeiten ab. Schneller ist mit unserem Auto auch unmöglich :) Am Artist Point genießen wir vor der filmischen Kulisse unser Frühstück. Nach dem Loop erkunden wir mit einem 6 km Hike auf dem Wildcat Trail die "Monumente" von ganz nah.
      Und schon geht es auf zu unserem nächsten Ziel, dem Grand Canyon, wo wir kurz vor den Parkeingang in einem Waldstück unser Camp aufschlagen und den Tag nach einer Runde Yoga mal wieder am warmen Feuer beenden.      Read more

      Monument Valley (Arizona, Utah)

      We left Cubero and got back on Route 66 for a while, where we visited Gallup for an hour and had coffee in a nice little café. Then we headed north into Arizona. The landscape changed and soon we were in wide valleys with huge rock formations all around.
      An hour before sunset we reached our campground in Monument Valley. The National Monument is on the Arizona side of the state line, but the scenery doesn't end there. Our campground was less than a mile from the monument and already in Utah. We parked the car, talked to the grandfather of the Navajo family that owns and lives at the campground, and then followed a small trail to the rim of the canyon where we had an amazing view of parts of Monument Valley and the vast desert surrounding it.
      The sunset was magnificent. The evening sun hit the big mountains next to us and we took a lot of pictures. But the sunset was nothing compared to the sunrise we saw the next morning. We had set the alarm for 6am, poured ourselves a cup of coffee and headed back to the canyon rim. We didn't know exactly what time the sun would rise, so we got up early and got the whole spectrum from dark blue night sky to pink morning sky to intense orange sunrise behind the massive rock towers of Monument Valley. Beautiful!

      The valley can be explored on a scenic drive. The road was quite bumpy and at the entrance we were asked if we had driven the car off-road before. I guess they want to make sure that tourists don't get stuck halfway through. We stopped at several pullouts, took a picture at John Ford Point and ate Navajo fry bread. There were a lot of tourists, but the experience was still great. The landscape perfectly reflects what every child imagines the Wild West to be like from comic books like Lucky Luke or any Wild West movie. 🤠🦬🏇🏹

      Before leaving the area, we drove to Forrest Gump Point, a piece of road where he is interviewed while running across the country, bearded and followed by a large group of imitators. We certainly weren't alone, but the view was truly exceptional.      Read more

      Dodgy roads

      Be great to be able to tell the time - chopping & changing between Arizona & Utah was the problem I maintain. The hotel is situated in Arizona but uses Utah time - 1 hour difference. All sounds simple but phones often use geographic & service details for time. Sometimes it changes all by itself. Unfortunately this meant when I thought I was getting up at 6.20 it was in fact 5.20. No wonder no-one was about. Should have twigged. Worse case when I looked out the window & saw pitch black something should've registered. At 5.30 it dawned on me, unlike the sun I was expecting to see. Went to bed for an hour. After all this it was cloudy. Went off for a run in a huff. Probably the most dramatic route for a while. Got back, packed & had prime time seats for brekkiee. Before heading off I wanted to take the valley road - admittedly it was a dirt road but the receptionist said the first section was do-able in a regular car. What she classed as the first section is anybody's guess - first 100m, first hairpin... The first couple of photo opps were achieved relatively easily but getting to John Ford's spec was tricky to put it mildly - deep ridges, big rocks & the remains of flash floods from yesterday. Managed to hit a couple of rocks - fingers crossed no more damage. The final view was pretty special - some opportunist was charging $5 for the John Wayne Experience - sit on a horse - no mention of milk though. Tentatively headed back - crawling along to a few people's irritation. Made it back to safety & had a final look in the visitor centre. Came out to torrential rain - is this Manchester in disguise?Read more

      Monument Valley - die Tour

      Heute gilt es früh aufstehen und um 8h für die Tour bereitzustehen.

      Das Wirrwarr und das Prinzip der verschiedenen Tour Anbieter verstehen wir nicht wirklich. Jedenfalls kommt eine Navajo Dame mit einem Tour-Pickup, der wie fast alle Fahrzeuge mir Openair Sitzen ausgestattet ist. Diese Dame ist mit etwas Zusatzgewicht ausgestattet (gelinde ausgedrückt).
      Wie ist sie nur in dieses Auto reingekommen? Bei den Zwischenstops steigt sie verständlicherweise nicht aus und gibt ihre Erklärungen vom Fahrersitz aus ab.

      Sie schenkt den Kindern selbst gemachte indianische Armbändeli. Im Gespräch finden wir heraus, dass ihre Mutter vor dem Parkeingang den von ihr hergestellten Schmuck verkauft.

      Bei der kurzen 1.5 Stunden Tour gehet es vor allem darum, szenische Eindrücke zu erhalten. Wir fahren daher nicht zu den kulturellen Stationen.

      Für alle war diese Schüttelfahrt ein grosses Erlebnis und die Kinder fanden es zum Schluss viel zu kurz.

      Wir müssen nun aber wirklich weiter, denn das nächste Ziel ist der Grand Canyon. Wir wollen nicht schon wieder erst am Abend ankommen.

      Zuerst gibt es für die Grossen noch einen Kaffee beim Visitor Center. Danach stoppen wir kurz am Indianer Market beim Parkausgang und finden die Mutter des vorigen Tour Guides.      Read more
