Early day - Reno - Fallon

    August 1, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Got here at 3pm after an hour in a gun shop & then knife warehouse, put the tents up for the first time. Trailer park, had a beer (1), shower, some bike tricks & in the sleeping bag by 9! Plan to be on the road 5.30 before heat gets up & head for Idaho Falls, few hundred miles but the speed limit here is 70mph so cars, trucks & Ute's are passing us at 80mph! We have to do 90 to stay in front so we let them go. Hope to make up some distance tomorrow!Read more

East thru Nevada on Hwy 50

    May 24 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

From Fernly west via Hwy 50, the loneliest highway... great weather and a lot of wide open spaces. Lunched at the International Cafe in Austin, Nv; which is almost on the verge of becoming a ghost time. Typical late 1800's mining town that had a high population of 10,000 and as of 2010 had 194. Boy and as of 2021, I'm guessing that number is smaller. The cafe had only one employee, hostesses, waitress, cook, and busboy in one. I think she was the owner!
Drove thru Eureka, the only other town on 50. This town actually looked like it was still surviving, but still pretty small.
Ended the day at Major Station; a little bar, restaurant and RV Park. Hmmmm not sure it offered much in services, no restrooms, no showers, no wi-fi and no cell service. But they were right over the crest of Conner Pass (7,749 ft) and had a really nice view of the valley below and the snow covered mountains beyond. Plus there were very cute goats to say hello to!

I drove this highway with the twins on my way back from Arkansas back in 2008. It is so lonely I actually stopped in the middle of the highway, got out an took pictures. Also, easy to drive really fast on it too!

What type of wood are those horns made out of? [Michael]

I think they are very dried out deer antlers. they had them at the top of the fencing that was all around the RV park.

    Elko, Nevada

    May 5, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Interstate 80 runs along northern Nevada and pretty much follows the California Trail which pioneers used to travel west. The Interstate also runs alongside the First Continental Railroad.

The land is stark but beautiful. The drive is long with not a lot to see. A few small towns pop up now and then. And salt fields in evaporated river beds. The occasional snow-capped mountain appears in the distance. Nice.

We had a picnic alongside the Trail (Interstate) and tried to picture what life was like for those pioneers traveling to California seeking a better life.

Our room in Elko has a perfect view of those snow-capped mountains.

    Fallon RV Park

    November 12, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We are coming to appreciate concrete pads for the trailer. Nothing to track in... no mud, no sand, no gravel. In addition to the concrete pad there are lots of tall beautiful cottonwoods providing shade in the balmy 72 degree sunshine.Read more

I could use some of that warm balmy sunny weather today. 55 degrees , grey skies and raining here. You know the kind of grey where it looks like dusk at 2:00 in the afternoon.

Indeed I do. It was 79 degrees as we pulled into Las Vegas.

    The Lonliest Highway ...

    November 13, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Otherwise known as Highway 50. We've been on this road before, but not in this direction. From the time we joined it just past Fallon, there are about 2 towns on the entire highway til you get to Ely near the eastern border. It's lonely. It's desolate. It is awesome.Read more

    Roadblock

    April 21, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

I was feeling so hopeful about getting down to the campground in daylight but no such luck. A few miles south of Fallon they closed our highway and we had to wait for it to reopen. Turns out a semi and a compact car squished together and it required two large tow trucks and a lot of emergency service vehicles to clear the road. 90 minutes later we are on our way. We did get to see a nice family of free range cows at least while we were waiting!Read more

    Surprise dunes

    November 13, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

... and apparently the Sand Springs Pony Express station location. Much of highway 50 follows the pony express route through Nevada. We cannot imagine!
