      Muni Cable Car

      March 1, 2020 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

      Intercontinental Mark Hopkins

      February 11, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

The hotel that we're staying in San Francisco is the intercontinental Mark Hopkins which is a grand old hotel situated on Nob Hill.

The rooms aren't as modern as some of the ones we've stayed in and are much more classically furnished. My room was upgraded but both were on the 10th floor and had great views over the city.

On the 19th floor there is a restaurant and bar that they call Top of the Mark. With the current restrictions because of the pandemic, this meant that drinks and canapes were served here each evening.

      Alcatraz

      February 14, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Our last day in San Francisco started early so we could have breakfast and then catch a tram car down to the area where we would get the ferry over to Alcatraz for our tour.

We've been really lucky with the weather for the whole of our trip, but it was far colder today and definitely jumper and jeans weather, rather than shorts and t-shirt.

Report the tram car and then had a 10 minute walk to pier 33 where we got onto the ferry to take us over to Alcatraz. You're both surprised that Alcatraz was actually prison for less than 40 years given. That's the thing it seems to be most famous for and had a fascinating self-guided audio tour of the name accommodation area which was far smaller than I thought it might be. There were three rows of cells and three stories meaning prison could accommodate around 150 prisoners and also some cells for solitary confinement.

We realised that we'd actually arranged the tour and it was quite tight for us to get back to the hotel in time to leave for the airport and so immediately after the audio tour, we walked back down the hill (mum says we ran down the hill) and were just in time to catch the ferry back to the mainland.

We caught an Uber back to the hotel before finishing our packing and then checking out. We drove the half an hour to the airport, checked in and started to reminisce about our trip!

So our time in the States 🇺🇸 has drawn to a close. It's been a real indulgence to have 11 days away reliving memories and creating new memories with mum.

Great to catch up with friends..and new spouses.(thanks Simon Thompson , Marcia Britvan and Andrew Parker). Los Angeles, you were great, Palm Springs was delightful, Cambia just spectacular and San Francisco.. Let's just say I've left a bit of my ♥️ there! x

      The Big Sur

      February 12, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We need to cover about 250 miles today to get San Francisco and after I stop at the seal beach we continue driving north. The road became extremely windy and very up and down, but the views themselves were amazing.

The sea was sparkling blue and the sky without clouds.

We stop briefly to admire the view and to see one of the viaduct structures that have been built as part of the road construction before continuing on to our next stop which was Pfeiffer beach.

A couple of miles off the main road and down a very windy bumpy road we came to a car park and a short walk later. Found ourselves on a really pretty beach with a couple of coves and a large rock with a cave that goes right through to the ocean. The beach is also famous for some of the purple sand that is being eroded down from the rocks above the beach. Mum had a quick paddle and then when we're back to the car to continue our drive.

After another hour or so we passed through Big Sur after which this part of the journey is named, although actually appeared to be just a handful of houses and visitor shops. We continued on to Monterey.

      Day 30 - San Francisco Day 2

      June 14, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

First up caught a tram to Lombard Street known as the "crookedest street in the world". We walked to the top a long steep climb. Obviously a great tourist attraction as it had very beautiful garden beds everywhere. The houses looked like lovely terrace homes but not sure I would want to live in on such a touristy street. Beautiful though.

Continued walking down to the Marine and walked along the shoreline till we hit Fisherman's Wharf. It was a lovely day so Stephen and I caught a ferry to Sausalito. It was a lovely town set on a hill reminded us of the Amalfi Coast/Capri. Great liitle town with heaps of touristy shops, cafes, ice cream shops and restaurants. Walked around the town, lunch at the bakery (no pies or sausage rolls 🙁), ice creams and then the ferry home. Lots and lots of bikes on the ferry as many people ride over the Golden Gate Bridge and catch the ferry back.

From the ferry you have great views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. On arriving back at Pier 39 we went to look at the sea lions. One very large sea lion gave us a private performance on the wharf. The bark sound Sea Lions make is awful.

Back for drinks at the hotel then dinner our last dinner in USA at Fisherman's Wharf.

      Day 29 - San Francisco Day 1

      June 13, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

The hotel we are staying at is very quaint it has a British eclectic theme.

After a lovely breakfast of scambled eggs and fresh fruit we headed to Alcatraz. Just as well we had pre booked as next available tour was 10 July. Apparently numbers are restricted daily in order to try and preserve the island and buildings which are crumbling.

There was a lot of history here that we did not know. First built with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fort to protect San Francisco Bay from invasion and as a military prison in the mid 1800s.

It was a federal prison from 1934 to 1963 and housed some very famous and dangerous criminals including Al Capone and the Birdman.

There were 14 break out attempts but all foiled
except 1 in which 3 inmates broke out and swam across the bay. They were presumed drowned but their bodies were never found.

The audio tour was amazing and just the feel of the place creepy. Cells were 5ft by 9ft and prisoners were locked up for 16hrs a day. They were fed good food because it was hoped by doing this the prisoners would not be thinking of escape.

Oh well it was a very harsh place it seems but YOU DO THE CRIME YOU PAY THE TIME.

After Alcatraz closed the Indians took possession in the late 60s as a land rights protest for about 19 months. Then the National Parks took it over and opened Alcatraz as a tourist attraction. It also is a reserve for several species of birds who nest at this time of the year so we saw lots of babies.

Then Stephen and I went to Pier 39 for a great fisherman's plate (glad we got 1 serve to share between 2 it was a big meal) and a glass or two of lovely wine. We actually sat at lunch talking to another Aussie couple Helen and Jo who only live in Engadine and were heading home tonight.

Back to our hotel to meet up with Tony and Gail for drinks in the parlor and to investigate Chinatown and Little Italy.

      San Francisco

      October 19, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Acordamos cedo e fomos p cozinha fazer panquecas.
Saimos e fomos direitas a Union Square. Chegamos ao Tin How Tample. Pagamos 8 dollars e sinceramente nao me surpreendeu. Fomos almocar aFisherman's Wharf. Achei super simpatico, quase maternal a preocupacao!

      The Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf

      January 22, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

First thing today, we walked out for breakfast and then down to the financial district to check out the “SalesForce” building, a new skyscraper with several attractions for tourists....high line garden, observation deck, etc. Well. The girl at the desk said they were having issues with the building’s support structure so all was closed!! Hmph, some new building. So we continued on our way past the Ferry Building and piers to the Wharf area. Saw the sea lions lolling about on the rafts, honking and occasionally fighting. What a life! Then on to the Cannery and Ghirardelli Square. Much trash for sale everywhere, a shame. Had a nice lunch at the Buena Vista, which we’ve gone to in the past. Then onto the Powell and Hyde cable car for an easy and fun ride back to the hotel! Beautiful sunny day again.Read more

A Day in the East Bay

      January 21, 2019 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

After a dinner last night with old law school friends Leo & Lee Dorado, we spent the morning on the Berkeley campus and visiting our old apartment and Judy’s workplace. Then, over to Oakland to see our former Chevy Chase neighbors, Gerrie & Bill Brennan in their condo by Lake Merritt, before hopping on BART and a cable car back to the hotel.Read more

      Second SF Day

      January 20, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

This morning despite the rainy and windy weather, we headed out to find a good little restaurant for breakfast, then walked to Steiner Street to see the “Painted Ladies”. These are a real icon of the city, climbing a hill with the city behind. We really got soaked at one point and found ourselves in the Tenderloin district, pretty seedy. But the rain finally quit and seeing the view made it all worth it!! After a tiny snack lunch (huge breakfast!!) we walked down to Chinatown and got some noodle cakes and checked out Sam Wo’s new location. (Old one shut down by health department!!!!). Might go there one time!!! So fun in Chinatown, great as ever!Read more
