      On the Tracks

      Eine Zugfahrt die ist lustig eine Zugfahrt die ist schön.....
      I'm back on the Road aber dieses mal anders. Oder soll ich eher sagen "Ab auf die Schienen".
      Ich habe mir da nämlich mal was überlegt. Jeder kann ja fliegen, aber warum nicht auch mal mit dem Zug fahren. Und somit entschloss ich mich, die Ostküste einfach mit dem Zug nach oben zu fahren.
      31h, 11 Bundesstaaten, 1 Roomette, food & drinks incl., Bärenzen und Ich.
      Wir beide hatten definitiv unseren Spaß, einfach zurücklehnen und aus dem Fenster schauen. Ja das mit "Non Stopp" aus dem Fenster schauen konnte Bärenzen die ganze Zeit durchziehen. Mum dagegen musste dann auch mal arbeiten, damit ihr hier diese Zeilen lesen könnt.
      Aber geschlafen haben wir auch richtig gut. Einmal schön in den Schlaf gerüttelt, am Morgen eine Dusche genommen (ja richtig gehört, im Zug ne Dusche), Essen, aus dem Fenster schauen, Essen, ... und ehe man sich versieht ist man am Ziel angekommen.
      Jetzt kann ich auch behaupten, dass ich nicht nur auf Hawaii, in California, Louisiana und Florida war. Sondern auch in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey und New York war. Okay ich war bei den letzteren nicht überall auf Grund und Boden (ihr habt gewonnen) aber ich bin zumindest durchgefahren.
      Aber mir gefiel es und ich muss euch echt sagen, ich saß einfach mit einem fetten Grinsen in meinem kleinen Abteil und genoss die Zeit einfach. Probiert's mal aus, es ist einfach herrlich und es wird für mich definitiv nicht die letzte längere Zugreise gewesen sein.

      What another OUTSTANDING day!
      Very early start.... drove through New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland before stopping at Virginia. Got to see the Penatgon, the largest real estate space in the world. It's 6.5 million square feet, has 67 hectares of parking and has 26 thousand employees!
      Also took a trip to the famous Arlington Military & Presidential Cemetery.
      Over 400 000 soldiers and larger than Central Park (by the way many of the graves have 4 people in each...family members)

      The final stop was Washington DC. Did you know that it is not a state? As in there is no star on the American flag that represents it....its a federal district.

      OMG, what a city. It's so over the top with its grandiose, imposing ginormous buildings!
      You cant help gulp at the size of them. Very very impressive!

      Had to pinch myself several times realizing I was ACTUALLY looking at the Whitehouse, the Lincoln memorial, the Washington monument and The Capitol! I mean, this was NOT the movies, I was there!! #holysmokes      Read more

      Nach einer Busfahrt über Nacht sind wir in Zentrum der Macht angekommen. Von hier aus regiert noch Präsident Obama die USA. Besonders am Weißen Haus mangelt es an Sicherheitskräften nicht weiter, so wurden selbst wir auf dem Bürgersteig abgewiesen. Jedoch gab es noch eine Menge anderes Zeug zu sehen und zu unserem Glück hatten alle Museen etc. bei der extremen Hitze eine Klimaanlage. Apropo Museen, davon gibt's ausreichend hier und alle sind zudem noch kostenlos. Drei davon haben wir sogar geschafft.
      Am Abend haben wir wie üblich in deutscher Runde im Hostel zusammen gesessen und ein Bierchen getrunken. Als die Nachtruhe in Hostel immer näher rückte, lockte uns der Besitzer mit kostenlosen Bier außer Haus ... war ein schöner letzter Abend in DC.      Read more

      Very interesting day, starting with getting Gabe some medicine for a tick bite that was getting swollen, then saw on the TV at the hospital what was happening judicially today, and was able to go to the Supreme Court building today and be among the protestors.
      Then we were able to see the WWII memorial, Washington Monument, the Lincoln memorial, the White House, national Cathedral, Vietnam Memorial and the Iwo Jima Memorial.      Read more

      Das Weiße Haus (englisch White House) in Washington, D.C., ist Amts- und offizieller Regierungssitz des Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten. Als Metonym ist es namensgebend für den Mitarbeiterstab des US-Präsidenten, das Executive Office of the President of the United States, ebenfalls meist als „Weißes Haus“ bezeichnet. Mitunter ist auch die ganze US-Regierung gemeint.

      Das Weiße Haus liegt an der Pennsylvania Avenue und hat die Hausnummer 1600. Seinen Namen erhielt es offiziell 1901 von Theodore Roosevelt aufgrund seines weißen Außenanstrichs, es dürfte aber schon zuvor umgangssprachlich als weißes Haus bezeichnet worden sein. Die zumeist in den Medien abgebildete weiße Villa stellt eigentlich nur den mittleren Teil des Gebäudekomplexes White House Complex dar, der außer dem Haupthaus aus zwei Nebengebäuden (dem Ost- und dem Westflügel, East Wing bzw. West Wing), den sie verbindenden Galerien und dem Eisenhower Executive Office Building besteht.      Read more

      A smooth journey of about 4 hours took us across 3 states, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, and finally into District of Columbia, Washington DC.

      A full day on Washington started with two brews and a banana each that we'd bought at the 7 eleven the night before. On our first stop - statues from the Korean War, Dad tried his Cherry Pie. He was in heaven.
      At the Lincoln memorial we went to a cafe, Dad had a coffee and a muffin and I got a cereal bar, this kept us going to the next stop - The White House. Unfortunately Joe Biden didn't invite us in a brew (apparently in the past you could actually go into the building!) but it was well worth a visit anyway.

      After the morning walking tour we decided to stop at the Smithsonian and make the afternoon our own. It was getting toward 1pm so we decided to scout of the food carts for some lunch. Most were the same ones as New York and then we stumbled upon the yellow van that 1. Had their prices visible and 2. Had rice dishes. Dad had the chicken platter and I had beef over rice. Sitting there in a park, with the sun beating down of us was paradise. The food was lovely and I scoffed every mouthful including the hummus!

      After viewing the Capitol building we grabbed a coffee and took the time to make a few phonecalls home before entering the Museum. After a couple of hours in there we started the 30 min walk home. The sun was boiling and the air felt very close. I suggested that we just grab food on the way and have a picnic and chill night in the hotel. Dad went for cold cuts subway and order it all by himself, he's becoming a pro. I went to 7 eleven and got two tacquitos (they were crispy on the outside and soft in the middle and at only $2.49 for 2 I couldn't help thinking that Bob would be getting those a lot if they had them at the local spar) and a fruit pot. We shared a bag of bbq lays and got a few bottle of pop.

      At about 7.30pm dad decided to go back to the shop and get more pop for tomorrow (and to finish his 2 mile recorded walk). He surprised me with a can of beer each. You definitely get your moneys worth with a full pint per bottle! We decided to just share a can and save the other for tomorrow. We had a little cheers and finished our night ready, for tomorrow's adventure.      Read more

      Many many things to see. in D.C. I really enjoyed the city with all the Smithonian museums. Did a hop on, hop off bus tour. Visited white house park, Tomb of the unknown soldier and other memorials. My absolut favourite of the Smithonians was the national air and space museum. While walking by the Caps stadium I got a cheap ticket for pre season Caps game. Thanks again Laura for letting me couch surfing.Read more

      Ankunft in Washington DC

      Adrian setzt sich wieder mal durch... wir laufen also mit schweren Koffern und noch schweren Rucksäcken (die Jungs haben viele Schulbücher dabei) bis zur U-BAHN... leider fährt diese doch nicht direkt zum Airport und wir müssen die letzte Station mit dem Bus stämmen. Einchecken klappt, nur leider sitzen wir in der hintersten Reihe ohne Fenster... obendrein vergesse ich vor lauter Flug- und Platzangst beim SicherheitsCheck (1Stunde Wartezeit!) meine Wasserflasche aus dem Handgepäck zu entsorgen und kassiere einen gewaltigen Zusammenschiss vom Personal... jänu... wir überleben... fahren mit dem Zug in die Innenstadt Washington, bekommen kein Taxi und laufen im Regen zum Hotel... für heute langts... 😉Read more
