      Sa Pa (day 7)

      Woke up to the pitter-patter of rain out our window on the metal roof. It was a fantastic sleep despite the rustic authenticity of the grandiose hotel... The bathroom floor was still completely wet from the bath last night. It was a luxury to have a soak in a tub, but it wasn't installed properly and they simply let the drain splash on the floor allowing it to find its way to the floor's drain in the corner 🤯 Silly A thought we wouldn't have to wear the provided flip flops to keep our feet dry when using the toilet 🚽🤔 On the plus side we've never had to use a squat style one so far 👍

      By the time we met up with S for breakfast, the rain had stopped. We found a street vender selling Vietnamese sandwiches that we took back to enjoy with our coffees.

      The roads were still damp as we started our travels. We followed the highways for a short distance before veering onto side roads, criss-crossing the river over the many narrow suspension bridges. The valley we rode through was fairly narrow, and rough. Passed through a lot of road widening constructions, as well as a couple hydro generating stations. One powerhouse was under construction with no fencing between the road and the works!

      The narrow and wild valley gave way to a wider and more cultivated area. Eventually S chose a roadside diner that seemed sufficient for our mid day meal; pretty typical fair of steamed greens, ginger and garlic water Buffalo, and rice. You've seen the photos from previous days 😉

      Our destination was roughly 40km away, but it felt like an eternity as we acceded the next mountain pass, and into the cold and damp cloud. The accent took us up 1600m where we passed a tourist location called Heaven's Gate. We didn't stop as the clouds was so thick you could barely see 20 feet ahead, but we could almost glimpse a golden multi-faced budda statue. The decent was challenging as the last 15km was under heavy construction, minimal signage, and poor visibility. Too bad we can't put the bike into autopilot and have a nap 😉

      We finally made it to the hotel by mid-afternoon, and were thankful to stop due to the chill penetrating into us. The whole city of Sa Pa was engulfed in dense fog. There's a view out there which draws many tourists, but perhaps we'll not get a chance to see it. 😶‍🌫️

      Our room heating isn't the best, but much better than noting! A was very excited to discover they have electric heat blankets for the bed too 🔥🛏️👍

      We enjoyed a wander around the city and a cocktail at the a tourist bar with a small wood/coal stove for heat. We passed quiet a few other ones that looked utterly freezing ❄️🐻‍❄️. Since we were in the big city our guide treated us to non-local food: pizza and pasta! We enjoyed tasting local corn and apple wine to accompany it 🍕🌽🍷😋 We chose to retire to our room for relaxing instead of venturing to another chilly bar for another beverage.

      Jour 85 - Sa Pa : rizières en terrasse

      Ce matin, le réveil est difficile pour Eliott et moi. Nous prenons notre petit-déjeuner à l'hostel (des pancakes au caramel pour ma part) avant de partir randonner. Pour cette journée dans les environs de Sa Pa, je fais le guide 🧭

      Nous rejoignons d'abord le centre de Sa Pa. Nous progressons bientôt dans des rizières en terrasse. C'est ce que nous étions venus chercher et très franchement nous sommes servis. Les paysages sont vraiment époustouflant ! Nous croisons de nombreux Hmongs (cette minorité ethnique très présente à Sa Pa et dans le nord du Vietnam plus globalement). Ils sont facilement reconnaissables par leur tenues traditionnelles. Ils vivent principalement de l'agriculture, de l'élevage et de l'artisanat.

      Cependant, un petit pépin physique est à noter. En effet, nous sommes principalement en descente et mon genou droit encaisse jusqu'à devenir douloureux. Je serre les dents et je continue à marcher.

      Nous nous arrêtons dans le petit village de Ta Van pour manger. Durant cette pause déjeuner, nous faisons la rencontre d'un australien avec qui nous échangeons longuement 🇦🇺

      Pour le retour à Sa Pa depuis Ta Van, il est hors de question d'emprunter le même chemin ou de rentrer par la route principale. Je passe alors en totale improvisation. Nous grimpons tout d'abord à travers des rizières en terrasse. Puis, nous continuons de prendre de l'altitude via des petits sentiers. Comme nous sommes en montée, la douleur au genou droit disparaît. Après être passé dans un petit village, nous montons encore un peu avant de redescendre sur Sa Pa. Je reconnais bientôt le chemin car j'avais promené dans le coin la veille.

      De retour dans Sa Pa après une randonnée d'environ 30km, je vois des terrains de tennis. Je propose à Eliott de jouer. C'est ainsi que nous nous retrouvons à échanger quelques balles. Nous faisons ensuite un double en pickleball avec des enfants vietnamiens (le pickleball est un sport similaire au tennis mais avec un terrain plus petit, des raquettes plus petites, une balle différente, un filet plus bas). Nous revenons ensuite l'un puis l'autre sur le terrain de tennis pour frapper quelques balles avec des jeunes vietnamiens 🎾

      Après cette session sport, en marchant en direction de notre hostel, nous croisons des enfants faisant du toboggan dans une pente sur des cartons. Casse-cou que nous sommes, nous faisons quelques descentes. On s'amuse plutôt bien !

      Nous mangeons au restaurant avant de rentrer dormir à l'hostel.      Leggi altro

      Der Grund für diesen Ort waren die Reisterassen. Es gibt auf den Philippinen noch mehr Stufen. Aber dafür ist dort die Landschaft nicht so schön. Es hat sich auf alle Fälle gelohnt hierher zu fahren. Ich bin mit dem Moped Wege gefahren, die ich mir nie getraut hätte zu fahren. Da war es gut das der Guide einfach vorweg fuhr.       Sa Pa Day #1

      Early wake up at 6AM for our bus to Sapa at 6:30AM.
      The hotel packed us a little breakfast box and we were on our way, however the bus was an hour late due to the rain in Hanoi. The sleeper bus was an interesting experience with about 40 seats, all reclined but all very close to each other. We were very lucky as we had the back seats which were the most comfortable! A six hour bus journey was filled with plenty of downloaded Netflix to get us through! 🤳

      Sapa is a town in the Hoàng Liên Son Mountains of northwestern Vietnam. A popular trekking base, it overlooks the terraced rice fields of the Muong Hoa Valley.

      We definitely noticed the temperature change from Hanoi as it is about 10 degrees cooler in the hills. Our hotel is beautiful, perched on the mountain overlooking the valley but fog and rain hindered our view today 🌁

      We got some pho and spring rolls at a local restaurant called Viet Home and then had a chill afternoon before heading out and checking out Sapa town- the lake, church, town centre and train station before heading to the market. Saw some water buffalo grazing on the athletics track 😂 Extremely touristy city, architecture is very French looking but also a bit run down (makes sense, as the French built it in 1922).

      The market was interesting, all the farmers from the villages selling their produce, it was mayhem but so interesting to watch. The meat section was repulsive 🤣 we headed to the night market afterwards and tried some delicious street food snacks - empanadas and banana fritters 🍌

      Dinner @ A Phù restaurant. We had dinner here - yum chicken with lemongrass and chilli, fried rice and a mixed salad. Jacques had some chilli and said it wasn’t too bad so I tried some but it definitely wasn’t ‘too bad’. I thought I was having an anaphylactic reaction 🌶️ 🥵      Leggi altro

      Fansipan

      12 dicembre, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

      Trotz Nebel im Tal begaben wir uns auf den höchsten Berg, den Fansipan. Nicht nur die verschiedenen Stationen sind beeindruckend sondern auch die unterschiedlichen Bahnen. Zuerst ein Funicular, dann eine Seilbahn, die über 20 Minuten hoch fährt, und diejenigen, die nicht hochlaufen können/mögen nehmen ein zweites Funicular. Alles ist dekoriert mit Blumen und Gegenstände. Am Schluss geht es immer noch xTreppen hoch bis zum Berggipfel. Es ist nicht einfach ein Berg sonder er ist heilig. Auf dem Weg gibt es verschiedene Tempel und spirituelle Wahrzeichen. Und wir hatten Glück die Sonne schien.Leggi altro

      Sa Pa - CatCat Village fail!

      Heute wollten wir etwas Wandern und uns das nahegelende Dorf: CatCat anschauen.

      Los ging es nach dem Frühstück mit einer kleinen Wanderung in die Richtung des Dorfes. Es waren ca. 3km nur abwärts. Zwischendurch machten wir noch halt an einem schönen Café. Aber man merkt einfach, dass Corona bzw. Der fehlende Tourismus in den letzten 2-3 Jahren hier auch Spuren hinterlassen hat.
      Nachdem wir etwas gestärkt waren und kurz vor dem Dorfeingang waren, haben wir an einer kleinen Kreuzung einen Unfall gesehen. Hier stauten sich bereits die Fahrzeuge. Zwei Lkw haben versucht einander vorbeizukommen auf vietnamesische Weise 😂Hupen und drauf los, der andere macht schon Platz, ist halt nicht immer die Lösung 😂

      Dran vorbei, hat uns ein Typ in komischer Arbeitskleidung angesprochen, der meinte wir müssen für das Dorf umgerechnet 6-7€/Person Eintritt zahlen und zeigte auf das benachbarte Tickethaus. Daneben stand noch einer, der uns das gleiche in besserem Englisch sagte. Wir googelten erstmal, fanden aber nichts.
      Wir merkten aber schnell, dass es wohl für dieses Dorf üblich ist Geld zu bezahlen als Eintritt als Tourist, anhand der Beschreibungen des Offices.
      Etwas angenervt bei gefühlten 40 Grad haben wir beschlossen, dann einfach wieder umzudrehen. Das war uns irgendwie zu doof. Wir dachten (unvorbereitet) etwas authentischer das Dorfleben im Norden kennenlernen zu dürfen. Aber auf so eine touristische Sache haben wir kein Bock. Wir waren hier einfach unvorbereitet und fehl am Platz.
      Wir sind dann den ganzen Berg wieder hoch und sind was essen gegangen. Dabei schmiedeten wir etwas Pläne für morgen.

      Den Tag über haben wir nur noch gechillt und sind Abends noch was essen gegangen.      Leggi altro

      wohlfühlen in Sa Pa

      Früh morgens sind wir nach Sa Pa in den Norden von vietnam gefahren, dort angekommen sind wir aus dem Ort holprig raus zu den Reisfeldern gefahren um in einem schönen Homestay zu bleiben. Das war die Beste Entscheidung die wir machen konnten, wir mussten mit unseren Rucksäcken einen Berg hochlaufen und dann waren wir schon da. Es war ein süßes Holzhaus direkt an den Reisfeldern, welches einer Familie der Hmong zugehörig war. Sie waren super süß und herzlich. Da wir gegen 14 Uhr angekommen sind fragten wir ob es möglich wäre noch ne Tour durch die Reisfelder zu machen und schon startete unsere 5 stündige Tour mit unserer Begleitung Lihlih, ein 21 jähriges Mädchen welche uns alles zeigte. Die Tour war wundervoll, durch den Nebel sah alles so magisch aus und wir lernten viel von ihr über Bambus und die Reisfelder und wie man eine Blumenkrone bastelt. Es war richtig richtig schön. Unser Abend wurde immer schöner, wir hatten ein “Familien”- essen mit den anderen Gästen und hatten richtig schöne Gespräche und sehr sehr leckeres Essen( das Beste bis jetzt). Es war wirklich wie eine vermischte Familie von überall auf der Welt und man hat mit jedem so schön geredet.Leggi altro

      Spaß mit lihlih

      Heute stand die nächste Wanderung an, unser Guide war zu unserer Freude wieder Lihlih, heute führte sie uns jedoch durch verschiedene Dörfer mit verschiedenen Sprachen und Religionen. Auf dem Weg, begleiteten uns 5 andere junge Leute aus dem Homestay und noch 3 Hmong- Mädchen aus ihrem Dorf. Die Wanderung war mal wieder richtig schön und lehrreich& das allerwichtigste sehr witzig, da lihlih einen so zum Lachen gebracht hat und einfach eine richtig positive Ausstrahlung hat. Nach 6 Stunden ging es fûr uns dann mit zwei von der Gruppe weiter in die Stadt da wir abends nach Ninh binh weiterfuhren. Bis zur Abfahrt haben wir noch mit clara telefoniert zu ihrem Geburtstag und einen Kaffee getrunken. Als wir dann auf unseren Bus warteten und dieser nicht kam, stellte sich raus dass der Bus schon vor einer halben Stunde gefahren ist und uns eine falsche Uhrzeit angezeigt wurde also gab es dann ne verfolgungsjagd mit dem taxi unserem Bus hinterher. Der Fahrer war nen flitzer deshalb haben wir die schnell eingeholt!Leggi altro

      Angekommen in Sa Pa und gleich gehts los mit dem Erkunden! Sa pa liegt in der Hochebene von Vietnam, wodurch die Temperatur bisschen kälter sind. Für die unglaublichen Aussichten und ein bisschen Südtirol Feeling nehmen wir das aber gerne in Kauf.Leggi altro
