    Ghent

    September 22, 2018 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

An interesting artsy city. They make a point of so many towers in town, claiming that it's unique, and I suppose it is. There is a pic of the medieval harbor and some of the guild houses around the old harbor. Nearby is the castle and graffiti alley, an area provided by the city for street artists. The city even over-paints the whole thing once in a while to start over. The day before my visit was one of those, and the "Pros" were out in force working on the new "canvas."Read more

    Brussels

    September 22, 2018 in Belgium ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

It may seem strange that the first pic of Brussels is a fountain dressed up in a costume, but it is said that the city has over 1,000 get ups for Manneken Pis, as he is called. He was probably a maker for leather workers as urine was used in tanning. Then the gothic city hall and baroque guild houses around the Grote Markt, or main medieval market square. Then a puppet show and views over the cityRead more

    Liege

    September 19, 2018 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Liege is the only city in Belgium that I visited that is in Wallonia, the French speaking part of Belgium. The rest are in Flanders. The first picture is one of the wonders of Belgium. It is a cast (lost wax) gold baptismal font from the 11th or 12th century. The rest of the pics give a sense of the cityRead more

    Antwerp

    September 18, 2018 in Belgium ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

First is the train station architecture, then views around the city. The last two go together. The statue is of a legend of a hero chopping of the hand of a giant who terrorized the city. The last pic is of the sculpture of that hand along the main shopping street.Read more

    Bruges/Brugge

    September 17, 2018 in Belgium ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Bruges is a lovely well preserved town, largely because it was bypassed by history after the major port moved from here to Antwerp in about 1500. It was only with the advent of tourism that they recognized what was here. Here are pics of the town center, the ancient hospital, canals through town and in the 4th pic, the gate to the community for unmarried women. Even today, that is true, and the gates are closed at night, excluding men.Read more

Also a tapestry as the town is known for themRead more
