Bruges/Brugge

Bruges is a lovely well preserved town, largely because it was bypassed by history after the major port moved from here to Antwerp in about 1500. It was only with the advent of tourism that they recognized what was here. Here are pics of the town center, the ancient hospital, canals through town and in the 4th pic, the gate to the community for unmarried women. Even today, that is true, and the gates are closed at night, excluding men.Read more

It amazed me to find an original Michelangelo Madonna and Child in Bruges. The rest of the pics are of more of the art in the church of our lady, including Rubens.

First is the train station architecture, then views around the city. The last two go together. The statue is of a legend of a hero chopping of the hand of a giant who terrorized the city. The last pic is of the sculpture of that hand along the main shopping street.Read more

It may seem strange that the first pic of Brussels is a fountain dressed up in a costume, but it is said that the city has over 1,000 get ups for Manneken Pis, as he is called. An interesting artsy city. They make a point of so many towers in town, claiming that it's unique, and I suppose it is. There is a pic of the medieval harbor and some of the guild houses around the old harbor. Nearby is the castle and graffiti alley, an area provided by the city for street artists. The city even over-paints the whole thing once in a while to start over. The day before my visit was one of those, and the "Pros" were out in force working on the new "canvas."Read more
