    The big journey

    August 9, 2023 in Hong Kong ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

    And we are off!!
Stayed at the Ibis Auckland Airport hotel $220 for a teeny tiny room with a double bed and a bunk bed, but was all we needed. Burger King Ubered in and a good nights sleep before we woke up at 5am to head to the airport for our first flight to Hong Kong at 8.40am.
Lucky us got to have 3 seats each, so an economy class lie flat for our 10 1/2 hour Air NZ flight. Food was pretty good. Quick stop in Hong Kong and jumped onto Cathay’s 2 1/2 hour flight to Suvarnabhumi Airport Bangkok. Booked into the Centara Grand Ladprok around 10.30pm…knackered.
5th floor smoking room 🚬…just like old days!
God its good to be back on Bangkok ❤️

    Chatuchuk: Day one

    August 10, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

Day One: woke at 5.30am and left hotel around 7.
Obviously nothing is open in Thailand at that time so just went for a wander. Found a great food market, found mangrove restorers and compost machine inventors and got lost in Chatuchuk Park trying to find the Butterfly auditorium. Exhausted by not having any breakfast we jumped in a cab and lounged by the pool eating club Sammie’s and pad thai for lunch. Washed down with 3 cold Singas.
Afternoon nap in the hotel till 5pm then explored the fancy mall next door to the Centara Grand Ladprok, where we are staying. Grabbed a taxi 400m down to the Jodd Fair night market. Very fancy but we had a beautiful Thai meal for 900baht - 4 dishes and a beers.
Strolled home and stumbled across a pub to sit outside and watch the traffic and people whilst listening to live singers sing Lady Gaga, drinking big bots of Singa. 450 baht. A lovely way to finish the day.
…except mema banged her head on the “pan denis tree” after trying to take photos of the elephant statues in the temple on the side of the road…hurt a little but was a little bit funny too 😂 Back at the hotel for 10.30pm for nie nies.

    Today was a big day

    August 11, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

    Today was a big day…
Started with coffee and crusonts by the pool then jumped on the sky train to Siam, 140 baht for us three, then taxi to the wharf, 300 baht.
Found the perfect river side restaurant, rickety and falling down and a great place to watch people and the long tails zooming by. Pork fried rice and papaya salad and a singa to share 380 baht. 5 baht each got us on the ferry across to Arum Wat. Stinking hot day, mema and lee got given a pashmina and wrap to cover up and we ventured inside to look at the the old temples. 100 baht each.
The pool was calling in the heat so we grabbed the ferry back across and got a taxi back to Lad Pharo for 600 baht.
Arvo by the pool then MTR to Mo Chit for 17 baht each to grab dinner at Chatuchuk market…but oh we were hungry and getting a wee bit tired too. Ate at the food market, tiny bit of shopping then back on the MTR only to get quite lost, needing to back track to the station before and walk wearily back to our hotel. Vowing to use taxis more…and only do one excursion a day…lets see how that goes!

    Chatuchak or bust!

    August 12, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

    Happy Birthday Queen Sirikit!

Woke early again, but in no hurry to get out the door. Took our coffee to the pool for a morning swim, then took the MTR to Chatuchuk (totally got on the wrong train first, but an easy transfer to get us back on track).

    Shopping shopping!

Ate again at the food part, papaya salad again for the win, with a side of fish cakes. The food was so good it made Mema fall off her chair literally 🙈

Made a god dent in the market, even found the animal section! Got a tuk tuk home. 300 baht, spent too much but all good, we were tired and tuk tuks are fun.

A loungy early evening in our room then out to the mall for a yumm Thai dinner - Tom Yum, chicken larb, spring rolls, beef salad.

Final bits of shopping at bottom of the mall then back to the hotel to fall into bed for another well deserved sleep!! Everyone needs it I think! 😴

    We went home to Pratunam

    August 13, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Treated ourselves to a beautiful buffet breakfast at the hotel this morning 500 baht each. All the lashings!
Then spent a few hours by the pool. The sky’s are so blue this time, and the sun is burny hot.
Left around 2pm to explore our old stomping ground Pratunam. The Indra has changed a lot after covid, there is no front foyer or connection to the mall. Was good to see it all again. Got a few bargains and then headed to the Platinum Mall up the road then for dinner MBK.
Finished the night off by packing ready to head to Phuket in the morning.
Ka kite Bangkok, love you long time!

    Amari here we come!

    August 14, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Checked out of the Centara this morning and jumped on a quick flight to Phuket 567 baht with about 150 baht in highway tax (Im putting the prices here just for future reference!)
Landed in Phuket and boy…it’s raining!! All good though because we have a beautiful beachside room overlooking Patong Bay at the Amari, Mema’s favourite place to stay. Sitting on the deck, even if it’s raining is bliss. Weather reckons it’s not gonna stop till the end of next month lol…no honestly that’s what it says!
International buffet for dinner tonight at the Amari. We are very very spoilt here. Indian, Thai, Italian, Mexican, seafood, desert, ♥️
Found out 2 for one cocktails from 5 to 7… that’s good to know!

We took mema to a westy bogan bar

    August 15, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ 🌧 29 °C

OH! The breakfast here is so good!! Bring on the next five days of it! Beautiful buffet followed by a few hours by the pool. ♥️
Caught the 1pm shuttle to Jungcelong for a bit of shopping shopping and looking around. Definite changes since covid. A lot less food places and stalls, lots less people too.
Walked the streets for a bit and found a nice LOUD bogan Westy bar to have a beer, mema had a pinacilada, and play a game of pool. Great spot for people watching.
Finished the day off with another yummy Thai dinner on the street behind Bangla road. Jumped in the tuktuk just as the heavens opened, great timing!

    Pooltime, massage, eating and WEDDINGS!!

    August 16, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

The weather held off again this morning long enough for us to have a lovely brekkie and swim again. Me and lee treated ourselves to a nice massage on the beach in front of our room. A beautiful suprise when we got back in the room!! DEAN AND TRACIE ARE GETTING MARRIED!! 🙌
After that excitement we headed off to find jewellery shops for Mema. Not much luck but 400 baht for 1/2 kg of prawns cooked with salt and chilli and a papaya salad and Tom yum shrimp fried rice made up for it. 🦐
Off to see the big Buddha tomorrow and buy Mema some gold earrings ♥️
Starting to look for our next stay…thinking Krabi. 🏝️

A day with Nikki and the Big Buddha

    August 17, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Woke to a beautiful sunny hot day today, ocean has calmed too. Breakfast and lounge by the pool then we were picked up by Nikki who we met at her travel desk last night in Patong. She owns her little travel desk and offered to take us out for the day, where ever we wanted to go for 1200 baht. Bargain!
She picked us up at 12 o’clock and drove out to the big Buddha, pointing out where she loved and said if it was two weeks more she would have taken us home to enjoy the fruit that would be ripe there. She was very sweet.
We stopped at one of the cafes on the side of the road on the big hill up to the Buddha. Beautiful views!!
Buddha was amazing, as always. A naughty monkey jumped on a family and stole there snacks. Only monkey we saw as the staff had sling shots to scare them away.
We gave koha in coins to the 32 monks as good luck on all of your organs and had a blessing with and old monk ♥️
Amazing views down to Phuket town and Kara and karon beach.
Afterwards we stopped at another cafe on the way down the hill and had coffee (I had a singa) spring rolls and prawns 🍤….so many prawns!!
Then off to the gem shop. Super flash, VERY expensive. Mum got a couple of amethyst brackets then we headed back to the Amari for dinner at the room and a movie. Pizza, burgers and chips. We are so very lucky to be here ♥️

    IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY!!

    August 18, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Another beautiful day today, the weather people got it wrong, sun so shiny I think me and mema might have got a bit of sun stroke, my chest definitely went a bit red/purple even with sunscreen!
Spent the day at the Amari, swimming and went for a walk out the the jetty. Lee and I had a go at snorkelling at the beach in front of our room but the visibility was not great. Good to get in the ocean though! Mema braved it aswell.
Walked down to patong and had a drink on the beach to watch the sun set and all the craziness - JetSkis, paragliders being towed by speed boats and lots of tourists living their best touristy life.
Another big walk to try and find dinner, lots to choose from so sometimes hard to make a choice. A wee bit of a downpour, lasted only about ten minutes. Had dinner at a street food place, prawn papaya salad, green curry and prawn fried rice 🍚
Need to pack up and head out to Krabi tomorrow. The adventure continues :)
