    Travel Day

    September 1, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Arriving at the Billing Airport a few hour before the flight paid off because our scheduled flight to Denver was delayed enough that we would miss our flight to London and lose a day of vacation. Since we were early enough they fit us on as standby on an earlier flight, but it was in final boarding so we ran. Roxanne’s necklace set off the alarm so that meant her shoes had to be swabbed. The swab had an alarm which meant she had to have a full pat down (frisked) and at the same time full backpack search. All electronics inside purse and backpack had to swabbed too. Cassie dashed to the gate to let them know Roxanne was on her way. We got on the flight by the skin of our teeth. Phew! That was too close to having to make all sorts of re-arranging. Just a little adrenaline to start off! Cassie had just said as Lee was dropping us off at the airport “We’ll pretend we’re on the Amazing Race”.

    Next flight - London bound!!

  • Chipping Campden

    Sep 2–4, 2025 in England ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

We made it. Going to explore Chipping Campden tomorrow. Had a light meal at Eight Bells Inn’s Pub tonight. Very good comfort food. Walked around some shops and buildings.

Visited the Court Barn Museum and St. James’ Church.Read more

  • Chipping Campden to Stanway, & Broadway

    September 4, 2025 in England ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

We stayed in a Shepherd’s Hut at an equestrian farm in Stanway. We walked 13.6 miles today past Broadway Tower which we toured inside and really enjoyed learning about. Had great tea and scones at the Cafe near the Tower. It was a perfect day! We crashed after a hot shower in the hut with no internet or cell service.Read more

  • Stanway to Winchcombe

    September 5, 2025 in England ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

We walked 8 miles today. We are staying at Room Next Door, an apartment next to a family household. We have a hot tub at the stay at the end of the day!!

The sun was out all during the walk and absolutely no rain or even a hint of clouds. The greens on the hillsides were so bright and we ate our fill of black berries. We went past Haile Abby ruins. Lots of impressive hills today.

The town of Winchcombe is very Harry Potter like. We love it and decided to have an extra day here after discovering that we booked a stay tomorrow night in a place called Cheltenham Hill which is a suburb of Winchcombe and not the next trail town of Cheltenham. Happy accident! So, we’ll be touring the town and the nearby Sudley Castle in Winchcombe. Likely getting to the castle and walking the grounds will be a walking equivalent of our day on the trail.

  • Sudley Castle & Winchcombe

    September 6, 2025 in England ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

We explored more of the town of Winchcombe and the Sudley Castle and its extensive estate grounds and gardens. Had a great picnic lunch and managed to get 9.5 miles of walking in today even though we weren’t walking to the next town. We’ll eat breakfast with our lovely hostess here at the Zen Cottage and visit with an Australian walker who is getting ready to go to Portugal to walk a Camino. She is an avid lifetime travel walker and has so many experiences to share. After breakfast we’ll hop in a taxi and get dropped off at the start of our next leg which is Cheltenham to Birdlip. It’s a beautiful full moon tonight so we took a walk along the Cotswold Way after wonderful East Indian cuisine. This is our second such restaurant and we are loving the flavors and wholesome ingredients. Ah, another outstanding day. Should be rain off and on for the next 4-5 days so I am prepared for poncho activated frizzy hair.Read more

  • Cheltenham to Birdlip

    September 7, 2025 in England ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

We did 11 miles today to end up in Birdlip at the Royal George where I had a lemon beer in honor of the Camino and Cassie had a Coke with lemon.

We saw Crickley Hill archeological site and some beautiful vistas.

Eating our dinner here tonight and getting a sack lunch here for tomorrow. Free breakfast at the same. We feel good we don’t have to go anywhere if we don’t want to.

We’re tired, but it’s a good, feeling accomplished tired.

  • Birdlip to Painswick

    September 8, 2025 in England ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

We walked 9.5 miles today past an ancient Roman villa and a Neolithic fortress’ ruin. It was mostly forest today. Beautiful preserves for birch trees and butterflies. We’re staying at the Falcon Inn tonight. It’s on a street of rows of historic buildings and across the street from a large church with a garden of well manicured Yew Trees.

Did some blocking on our sore feet with Karen, Cassie’s friend over WhatsApp video feed. That felt great!! Rested and ready to head down to dinner where we are staying.

  • Painswick to Stonehouse

    September 9, 2025 in England ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

After a very nice eggs Benedict and eggs Florentine at the Falcon Inn, we made it another 9.5 miles today.

On this leg of the journey we passed the official halfway point marker that makes the spot one half way between Chipping Campden and Bath. Total miles 103.

We’ve put in about 10 miles in addition to the 50.1 miles that mark the halfway with our touring of castles and attractions and walking around cities once we arrive.

Cassie was better at taking photos today than I was. So I’ll load those up in a bit.

It was a good day, but the hills were hurting me a bit more than usual. It’s been an accumulation of aches and pains that caught up to me today. I was soooo happy to see the Rest Cafe that we had designated as our stopping point for today during planning last night. From there we got an Uber to our hotel (the Frocester George) that was a bit further off trail than some. No worries, booking a year in advance would have avoided the need to Uber, but really- who books a year in advance?? Not I.

Our dinner at the Frocester George was Brixham plaice fillet and Sweet potato ratatouille and brie bake. We had hot chocolate with cinnamon as a warm up.

  • Stonehouse to North Nibley

    September 10, 2025 in England ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

We ended up doing almost 11 miles today, originally believing that it would only be a 8 mile day. It was still a great day. We hiked hill after hill, I think about 5-6 of those puppies and they were STEEP. Thighmaster city!

Happy to have arrived at the Black Horse, with acclaimed best curry in the area. Yes!

About a month ago, when we were planning our distances to hike each day, we couldn’t find accommodation in Dursley, so we ended up picking North Nimbly. North Nimbly is still along the Cotswold, but very close to the next town we intended to stop. So tomorrow will be a short hike. That good as it is 95% likely to rain. We can do some cafe, library & laundromat hopping and see if we can make the most of extra time in Wotton-Under-Edge, our next town.

  • North Nibley to Wotten Under Edge

    September 11, 2025 in England ⋅ 🌧 59 °F

I know the names, right! We left the Black Horse this morning and immediately faced an up hill climb to a monument. We climbed the tower stairs and saw some amazing 360 degree views. Then we had a short walk in the rain to a nice cafe called The Edge. Took us a little over an hour to walk from North Nimbly to Wotten Under Edge and we were able to check into The Swan hotel early. Good thing too. Cassie caught a bad head cold and needed a good nap. We’ll see if she feels better when she wakes and head to a crafting space only 3 min. walk from the hotel. It’s a good day not to be on the path as if has been dumping (tipping) rain off and on pretty steadily.

Enjoying a restful day and the sound of rain on the roof.

  • Wotten Under Edge to Old Sodbury

    September 12, 2025 in England ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

We made it over 13 miles in 5.5 hours today to arrive in Old Sodsbury at the Windylands B&B at around 2:00 pm. The nice proprietors allowed us to check in early and we got cleaned up to go out to dinner at the Cross Hands Hotel in town.

We slogged through many puddles and mud today on the trail with some good rain showers, but finished up with the sun peeping through and allowing us to take off the rain ponchos.

With lots of rain come babbling brooks and waterfalls, and flushes of mushrooms…..and a blister.

  • A Day in Bath - Jane Austen Day

    September 13, 2025 in England ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

Several days into our walk in little villages throughout the Cotswolds Cassie noticed brochures for the 250th anniversary of the annual Jane Austen Festival in Bath. Our preplanned extra days at the end of this adventure culminate in Bath and just so happened to coincide with the JA festivities.
We’ve had many happy accidents on this trip. We’ve also discussed that these “happy accidents” could also be named “your on your intended path, please continue occasions.” So we continue to follow our path in more ways than one and soak in all the things by planning to see the grand promenade or parade of people in period costume and see what else Bath had in store for us.

We left our stay at the Windylands in Old Sodbury in an Uber to the be dropped off right at the beginning of the Jane Austen parade. Thousands of people turn out in costume and full dress and finery and a band of fully decked out red uniformed soldiers played as the throng followed. Cassie videoed and snapped pictures until her iPhone went dead and her cheeks hurt from smiling. I stood in stunned fascination most of the time with what I saw were hours and hours of planning and sewing and hand crafting of some really incredible gowns and hats and men’s coats and boots. These participants really got into the hair and makeup as well as acting the part of aristocrats, lords, ladies, maids and merchants.

After, we looked in shops and a Jane Austen style market place with every manner of costumes and accessories available to purchase. I am sure these patrons add a little bit to their costumes every year at this special market.

We walked along the canal and really enjoyed the sights complete with people everywhere in period clothing bringing it all to life and sending us back in time.

We arrived at our AirBnB later in the day and were met by Richard and Lizzie the owners of a fine manor for the past 40 years. The giant weeping willow in the garden was planted by them when the first arrived. They told us how it’s changed from a farm where the road to bath went right past the huge barn to a stately neighborhood now and the barn was converted to a modern residence. We met one of their daughters and really enjoyed hearing about their lives here in this Village of Claverton. Turns out we can walk the canal back to Bath in the morning in less than an hour. That will be great as we don’t have to walk any main roads with traffic nor will we have to Uber if we don’t want to.

We saw the Cotswold Way finish marker in front of a grand church on the Bath Square and we went over the 100 miles walked mark by just walking around Bath today.

Tomorrow we arranged to have high tea at the Post House, Jane Austen style. We’ll visit some museums in Bath and take in more of the town which only had a small taste of today.

What an over joying and satisfied feeling to have ticked off so many boxes on this trip. If we had tried to plan a more perfect mother’s and daughter’s date today than this it could have taken years, but it happened rather serendipitously.

  • High Tea Jane Austen Style

    September 14, 2025 in England ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

We downloaded a walking audio tour of the location where Bridgerton was filmed and toured the Jane Austen Museum.

Then we had high tea at the Pump House in Bath. There was a piano and stringed trio playing during our tea service. The finger foods and sweets were very tasty. It rained and rained so we were wet rats by the time we got back, but still we really enjoyed the day.Read more

Saying goodbye to Bath with spa treatments and a nice swim in the warm mineral pools.

Bath is such a gorgeous walkable city with so much eye candy you can barely take it all in. We have really enjoyed it and so glad we saved extra days at the end of our walk to see the city.Read more

  • Stonehenge and flying home

    September 16, 2025 in England ⋅ ⛅ 54 °F

It’s the end of an amazing trip. I’ve enjoyed sharing it with Cassie so much as her sense of wonder at all the things from trees, buildings and people were equal or more than mine. Her ability to tough out the tough situations while absorbing the good in everything around her is one of her many superpowers.

We’re happy to be going home to our loved ones, but sad that our trip has come to an end. The people are warm and welcoming and so willing to share a cup of tea and their homes. They are interested in we Americans in a caring way often saying “we’re rooting for you” and you’re our “closest ally”. That is so nice to hear and quite uplifting.

Thank you England for your charm and your beauty and for allowing us to walk through your backyards, cow fields, historic sights, streets and countryside unabated (if on designated paths) through kissing gates galore.
