Saturday in Logroño

A quiet and pleasant day. Had a late and luxurious breakfast, though I waited to have coffee later at a cafe, as the machine had bad coffee according to Amr…so I hit the chocolate button instead…Amr had a walk first as it was drizzling a bit, and I was happy to play on my iPad, but it soon fined up and we ventured out together. All was fairly quiet for a Saturday morning we thought. People out having breakfast, but empty streets…bought chorizo at the market (who had prize for best chorizo in 2022), we stopped at a cafe that did churros, very nice - and again I didn’t have coffee as they make the lovely thick chocolate to dip churros in..yum. Bought a large tube of sunscreen for the future sunny days walking!
On our second venture out we walked along the river, so pretty, and spring has sprung quite a lot earlier than our past towns…some of the trees look in full leaf, and the heavily pruned trees in parks and along streets, are starting to sprout branches and leaves and look pretty again. Also, across from our hotel window we have noticed several stork nests on the roof of the building opposite, with storks busily collecting sticks…they are very large, and can see at least 5 different nests.
On the way back from the river walk we stopped for a coffee finally, and came across the Museo de la Rioja, so we stopped to look and it was so interesting…from Stone Age to now…and very well presented….and as always, evidence of a Roman presence…Never been there in our other visits….
By then beautifully sunny, and we had a kindle session on a bench by the river, Amr had a jacuzzi, and we are off to seek food soon. By afternoon of course the streets were bustling, people and families everywhere, the tapas bars crowded and throbbing…and by evening I think it will be chaos…nice chaos!
Well we set off at about 7, and found the tapas street which had been impossible to walk through in early afternoon with the crowds was all closed…there were people hanging round, maybe waiting for opening time..but we went to the square and had a quiet drink, watching the passegiata of people - families, children, elderly, youth - sometimes dressed up (? Stag nights, or hens nights)…and then went back to our tapas bar and all was open and vibrant again…decided it was simpler to stay there..we managed to get seats…and had delicious food and wine, and found ourselves home soon after 9, long before the Spanish dinner time…but we are walkers and pilgrims, and time to call it a day!Weiterlesen

Another easy walk

We are now at Navarrete after an easy 13 km walk. This is a lovely little town on a hill surrounded with vineyards and the rich red Rioja soil. We walked quite slowly so as not to be too early, arrived at about 12.30, stopped for coffee and also for fresh OJ before checking in and room ready, bags here, and we have settled in!
It was a perfect temperature for walking, coolish and quite a lot of cloud cover. It actually feels cold now, and I am wearing a fleece that I thought would never be worn again once we left the Pyrenees…weather app says 19° but it is wrong! It has now become a little drizzly, but doesn’t matter, and tomorrow should be dry and still cooler for our 17 km walk to Nájera. We walked out through the outer suburbs of Logroño- you realise it’s quite a bit city and not just the historical centre - and through a big park and bird sanctuary…very pleasant. And also passed the big bull structure high on a hill that is equivalent maybe to our big banana …. you can see it for miles in all directions…anyway, a very good and easy walk…our hotel has a pilgrim menu for dinner so all is well.Weiterlesen

ReisenderLove looking down on those old villages. Not a bad spot to have a picnic, break bread and slurp some Rioja

Now at Nájera

Another really pleasant walk…cloud cover and breeze, so not too hot, patches of blue and sun, but not blazing…perfect really, and we walked the 16.8 kms through more picture postcard scenery of vineyards, olive groves and some grain fields - but predominantly vineyards. We left between 8.30 and 9, and got here at about 2, stopping at Ventosa for a coffee/ColaCao break…and a lunch break at a well placed park for pilgrims with trees and benches just before arriving at Nájera. The walk in to town is always rather dreary - through an industrial area and not the best end of town, then you arrive at the river and the bridge and it is all lovely…the old charming part. We are staying at the same hotel as twice before, so all very familiar.
We stopped to have a beer and a snack of croquettas on arrival, before checking into the hotel. Quite a few walkers there, and an amazing thing happened. Two women arrived, and asked if we were Australians from Sydney, and they turned out to be a cousin of Cathy’s husband Pete Sertori and her friend Angela!! We had in fact heard that they were on the camino, probably catching up to us, from another cousin Margaret Moore, who has walked the camino and we have had lovely camino bonding sessions…but how amazing to actually meet up!! Margaret had sent us both photos of each other, but I think I could have sat at the same bar and not noticed…but Amr looked, and Susan looked at us and wondered…and it all clicked!anyway, very good. We are meeting up for a pre dinner drink in a little while, though also had an end of walk relax for a bit too. They had arrived not long after us, and had walked from Logroño….almost 30 kms…leaving in the dark at 6.30…too much to enjoy it…they plan to get a bus across the meseta I think, as they have a schedule for the flight home! Better to bus and then truly enjoy the walking I think.
So now we are settled into our room, relaxing, reading, doing words etc…the Spanish double rooms often consist of 2 beds pushed together, but each with its own set of sheets and covers…all gets very tangled when you untuck them (I like everything loose)…but all part of the tapestry…at least we get to have our own pillow this way!!..our room today is actually a triple, with an extra bed…
Soon we will hit the town and look for a good place to eat tonight. Last night’s dinner was fun, at the hotel which had a restaurant and probably one of the few places available on a Sunday night…many walkers there - a couple from Luxembourg, a couple from England, a Belgian and an American…the waiter was from Argentina. I had a veg soup that was virtually delicious cooked veges with a very little liquid…and then roast chicken (they have a way of making it taste so good)…comfort food! Amr had salad and hake…I wonder what tonight will bring.
After these 2 easy days we have 4 more all over 20 kms. Shouldn’t be too much, we are well in stride now, and don’t let ourselves get tired. The longest will be the walk into Burgos on Friday..about 26 kms I think, but Burgos is lovely and we have a rest day there.
Well now back from dinner…fun again. First we met up with Susan and Angela, and a group of other walkers from many countries, great to chat and also goodbye as they will all be ahead of us tomorrow. Then we left the young (about 60 yr olds!) as we had found a good place for dinner and wanted to get there before it was full…we did the right thing…empty when we arrived, but soon people arrived and more people turned away…good dinner, and the English couple from last night there at a nearby table and another Australian woman we hadn’t seen before…bit of a loner and really nice. Amr had a beautiful fish that he saw being taken into the kitchen, and I had stuffed peppers..all good…Weiterlesen

ReisenderHi Walkers. Love your regular stories, We have had a big day in Australia as it's been Anzac day with a huge participation all over. The wonderful thing is the huge number of the young who have turned out to applaud the staggering old veterans. Age was up early and attended the dawn service at around 4.am. I'm afraid I stayed in bed!

Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Amr says that today has been the most spectacular walk so far…and it certainly was beautiful…wide open spaces with sweeping fields dazzlingly green! We are still in the Rioja, but less vineyards as the day wore on and more grain fields, and also beans and peas. It was 21 kms…we left about 8.45 and got here at 3, as usual taking our time with breaks and taking the hills slowly. Cool, about 10° in the morning rising to 23 or so in the afternoon…and a good breeze to fan us so never unbearably hot! And in the evening it cools off, and people put on jackets…on the TV we saw weather reports of extreme heat round here…well, as always, I think they are pushing the idea of climate problems…(won’t rant!)…
So we left Nájera, climbing out of the huge red rock cliffs that the town is built up to…and then across the gorgeous fields, still many vineyards, and mountains (?hills) in the background. Then we moved into the more wide open spaces where you can see the path of the camino stretching out for miles ahead of you…very spectacular, and one particular view, which often appears on the covers of camino books, we saw in a completely different aspect in spring…we are so ecstatic that we are here now to see the spring growth…and our hotel here, where we stayed twice before in a tree-lined street, is now lined with tree trunks starting to sprout.
We remembered it was Anzac Day and were reminded by the many red poppies growing along the paths..lovely wild flowers everywhere. After unwinding on arrival we walked around this lovely town. We visited the cathedral…pilgrims get reduced admission…and it is beautiful and has the famous gothic hen house. Our admission also included the bell tower and we actually climbed it!!! It was worth it, magnificent view from the top, and we were prepared for the bells donging at 6.15, but fortunately only one bell did one ding! We were up there surrounded by bells!Weiterlesen

22 kms to Belorado

Today’s walk wasn’t quite as perfect as yesterday because much of the path was alongside a big main road (the N-120 which snakes near us all the way to Santiago) and our serenity was interrupted by the roaring past of big trucks…but the scenery remained beautiful, fields of grain, peas and rapeseed. We compared photos of 5 years ago in September and still can’t get over the contrast - so beautiful now with all the green, and we didn’t think it was dreary and dull then when we knew no different! There are still fields that are being ploughed and I wonder if they are preparing to plant sunflower seeds, because the September photos do show fields of sunflowers here - the bright spots amongst the stubble.
It was hot, and we both shed layers and ended up with just one shirt…and it was much cooler…and I covered my arms and legs and neck with the expensive sunscreen we bought in Logroño! We walked from La Rioja into Castilla y León today which marks our progress!! And I looked at the photo of us at that point in 2018 and I was wearing the same shorts, shirt and hat!! Now at the hotel of twice before, basic and nice. Except we are on the second floor and had to lug the bags up 2 flights of stairs…!
Just back from having a beer with an English couple we had met on and off for a few days, very nice, but they are finishing walking here. They will be in Spain for a while, and may continue in about a week because they enjoyed it so much. After that we found a supermarket to get provisions for tomorrow’s walk…it will be a long one, and you can’t count on bars or anything being open…today the first town after 6 kms had an active bar - when it was nice, but no one was desperate, though we did stop and Amr had coffee and I had some of the amazing fresh OJ…we squeeze oranges every day, but it is never as sweet and delicious as the OJ here! And then the next 2 towns, when people were hotter and more tired, were totally asleep!! We had cheese made into a sandwich with yesterday’s baguette, but stale bread not so good, and we today got crackers as an improvement…you can usually find a seat in the shade, even if the village is closed.
Now off to dinner. Belorado is tiny, but there were several hopeful looking places to eat. The Plaza Mayor is beautiful …a big open space, with even a rotunda in the middle. But usually is has a lovely tree-shaded area in the middle, which of course at present is the bare gnarled branches, starting to bud…still looks strange and rather weird to me.
…just back from dinner…saw the English couple, Jane and Rob, again as we were walking back, and had a post dinner wine with them…lovely. And via them we noticed the storks’ nests on the church bell tower…very relaxed!Weiterlesen

An unexpected turn of events

Well it’s now Friday, and sorry I missed Thursday but all didn’t go as planned. When we left Belorado I wasn’t feeling good, had strained my abdo muscles and was feeling queasy, but ok to walk so we set off and as usual it was more beautiful countryside. That is for the first half. At 12 kms we got to a small town - Villafranca Montes de Oca - where everything changes…you ascend a long long climb and at the top find yourself in oak and pine forests, totally removed from the fields of below. But this time the oaks were still leafless and not as spectacular as later…
So the second 12 kms (it was a 24 km walk!!) was up there…there was another descent and ascent down to a river, which looked horrendous, but when we came to do it remembered it was a short and sharp climb, and not too bad. Then the walk took us through pine forests, many cultivated and planted in rows…but that last 8 kms through pine trees did seem endless, and we were happy to finally arrive at San Juan de Ortega, a tiny place, but we stay at a nice hotel.
But in the end we didn’t sleep there as I found that my muscle strain had caused a hernia and that was why I was feeling so crap…I couldn’t eat, and was nauseated…so we made the decision to get a taxi to Burgos, where we were meant to walk to today, and went to the hospital there…and so amazingly efficient…after seeing some doctors and the usual triage, they said it needed surgery and they would operate now…which they did at about 3am…so all is now sorted and we will carry on - but I will get a taxi for the first week or so while Amr walks…the plan will continue!
So here we are in Burgos, officially for 2 days, and I feel fine but will rest and be “sensible”!!Weiterlesen

ReisenderSo glad to speak to you and glad the whole procedure and turn of events was as efficient as possible. Please take it easy. Sending you tons of love and healing ❤️🩹 vibes

A day in Burgos

Not the day we imagined…we love Burgos and I hadn’t planned to spend the morning in hospital…we persuaded them to discharge me, but I have to say I still feel queasy, which is upsetting as I can’t face the beautiful food on offer. I also couldn’t face another lonely night in the hospital…once in the ward, it is a very solo experience…they are very nice,, and try to do a little English, but my Spanish has gone to pot under the circumstances and it is very frustrating not to be able to converse properly.
So we did venture out a little. Amr had explored a bit yesterday too and he back on track with the city. It really is a city, with cars even going through the centre, but as charming as ever. I got to check out the cathedral and Plaza Mayor…Amr had to have dinner alone as I couldn’t be around food!
Not sure where we stand for tomorrow…plan is for me to taxi to Hornillos del Camino, but it is a tiny place and we’ll see in the morning.Weiterlesen

Margaret's TravelsIt is all unfortunate that this would happen. I know you will bounce back soon. That Cathedral is amazing and Burgos a busy and enticing city.

ReisenderI meant to say find yourself a nice park bench and sit in the fresh with your kindle and get better

Yet another day in Burgos

I’m afraid that it’s mostly medical news today, and not describing the lovely green fields that we have been walking through. After discharge from hospital yesterday I still felt awful - nausea and vomiting, and in the middle of the night I knew we couldn’t go on today…had to go back to the hospital and get help…they were lovely, and a CT showed a twisted small bowel causing some obstruction which was why I felt so nauseated, and probably the cause of the whole chain of events…so here we are, Amr booked into the hotel till next Sunday and we had to readjust our walking programme…the camino people very sympathetic and understanding (can’t be the first time a medical crisis has happened on the Camino) and tonight Amr is spending on the reclining chair in my room as the hotels are full (or super expensive) as it’s a long weekend for May Day. We are good! I am on nil by mouth (thank god I don’t have to try and eat!) and just IV fluids to rest the bowel, and hopefully in a few days it will resolve…otherwise surgery, but hope not.
Well that’s the latest. Amr will get to know Burgos really well, but it’s a lovely city and lots to see…but much more fun doing it together. Today he went to the Museum of Evolution right near our hotel, had all the time in the world for a good visit. But I do feel bad that he has to do all the mopping up and reorganisation of the trip..we hope to move on sensibly after about a week, but not sure how much walking I will be doing at first…will be cautious. Just so glad that there was a reason I was feeling bad, and that now it is being resolved. Phew…sorry, this is not really a travel report! Will try and write a bit each day, but will probably not be a huge amount to say for a little while.Weiterlesen

ReisenderDear Rosie, I'm sending you a big hug from one hospital to another! Although I'm at work. You are definitely where you need to be. A bowel obstruction is a very serious matter and I am hoping it will resolve without surgery! Take care thinking of you and keep us updated. X

ReisenderThank goodness you have a diagnosis and hopefully there will be no need for surgery and you will be forced to rest while connected to tubes. Sending even more hugs to you both 😊😊

ReisenderGreat to get an answer. Let’s hope it sorts itself out. Don’t worry about Amr- he can amuse himself anywhere. Are there any shirt shops in Burgos? All send their love, even Cincinnati

Still Burgos

Not much to say today…languishing here…but I want to respond all of you who have been sending such lovely messages, it has boosted me along and thank you all SOOO much…means a lot.
Amr has had a visit to the castle - now in ruins - but has beautiful view down to the cathedral and city…and he enjoyed watching the May Day parades going on…he is finally back in the hotel and can sleep in a bed, after 2 nights in waiting rooms, and last night on an uncomfortable chair here…! We’ll see what tomorrow brings…
Having trouble uploading..taken off photos to see if the words go..

Post surgery

Amr here today to write update:
Arrived to hospital to have her whisked away to theatre for operation which involved resection of a section of small bowel that caused the problem and Rosie is now back in ward and own bed. No input except IV and still has Nasogastric tube till tomorrow.
Plan is for 5 more days in hospital then maybe 2 in Burgos Hotel till up to move on.
Only photo is Rosie post recovery and tired +++.
Getting to know city quite well and thankfully weather great.
Rosie will take over tomorrow and is flattered by all the thoughts and wishes.

ReisenderWhat an ordeal and so far from home - not the Camino anyone would want! Hopefully you'll now feel loads better! Big hugs and kisses to you both xoxoxo

ReisenderFeeling ok as much as you can with tubes everywhere…photos always look flushed and blotchy face - NOT calendar shot! Now have a room mate and actually quite good - don’t feel isolated in Siberia with the comings and goings…thanks for messages ❤️

More Burgos hospital

Back to me but naturally not lots to say, certainly nothing interesting!! But it has been day 2 and I am as fine as can be expected I think. Amr and I have done many circuits of the corridors, I no longer have a catheter and there is promise of the nasogastric tube coming out if I behave! That is the medical bulletin.
Amr has been here all day, so not even stories from the world outside today! They are very kind … at first I felt it was just an efficient and functional hospital, but now there are warm kindnesses … Amr was even brought a tray of lunch!! He said the soup was edible and it was a beautiful omelette! And mandarins which are his favourite fruit…and they brought a dinner tray, but he had just left…
He has also been swamped with travel insurance forms, but they too have been very kind, spoke to me and were very sympathetic and understanding.
My nice room mate, Mercedes, was discharged this pm…sad as she and her husband were very nice…they had walked the camino in 2019 and we had a bond. About in 60s I think. She had a simple hernia and was just overnight..Now I have a new neighbour, a bit odd, but seems ok…certainly not a neighbour from hell!Weiterlesen

ReisenderLooks like a decent clean and light room, and perhaps enough room to swing a cat?! Amr's lunch might be OK but the chair doesn't look great for sleeping - love conquers all! Love and patience to the patients!

Margaret's TravelsHi Rosie. Let’s hope it is all happy days from here and you will get stronger each day. I feel for you and Amr - forced off the Camino and wanting to get back. It is a blow, but be patient with yourself and you may reach the end.

ReisenderNot the sort of view you are used to (other than the lovely Amr of course) but glad you feel better about the hospital. Keep resting and walking the corridors between rests 😊😊

Still Burgos, but some progress

Some news from inside hospital and outside. First was that last night when Amr was having some wine and tapas he witnessed a huge religious procession going through the streets…we don’t know what was but noisy and colourful!
Then today, Amr came quite early as I’d had a bad night, not much sleep and a rather unsmiling night nurse…but the day improved - the docs say that if all continues I may be released Monday, And today they stopped the continuous IV fluids and this afternoon the NG tube came out. So far I have had camomile tea and I think I get some soup at dinner!!
Also I forgot to mention another high point… I had a shower (helped by Amr) and washed my hair!! First time for more than a week I think. So you can imagine rejuvenation of spirits!
Amr was again given lunch (I think they like him because not all visitors would)… and Hartley, he said the soup was good, but the chorizo and potato stew stuff was worthy of Tapavino!! And there was a salad, some chicken stuff and 2 mandarins…They really must like him!! Also will mention that masks are mandatory in the hospital…except patients in their room (and husbands - not officially)…madness…
Then when he left he finally visited the monasterio de Santa Maria la Real de las Huelgas which we wanted to visit last time but closed on Mondays.. so now he has seen it and says he was blown away. Pics not allowed inside but he has sent some of cloisters. This is also the burial place of Eleanor of England, Queen of Castille.
So all in all a not bad day, we walked many laps of the corridors as usual, and I am going to take the eating very slowly as just don’t want any backward progress.Weiterlesen

Margaret's TravelsYour news sounds hopeful. Some highlights there despite the circumstances! Let this continue. Good luck.

ReisenderGood news Rosie - especially the shower - and the procession looks impressive and the monastery just beautiful. Take

A boring report!

So little to say today…the big excitement of the day was I’ve been promoted to semiliquid diet and actually had broth, puréed pumpkin and a cooked pear for lunch…wow…good thing is I feel hungry and eating has not given me nausea…all good signs. One funny thing I must relate: this is Spain, and hospital times are so different - the first human contact in the morning is about 8.30, then breakfast at about 9-9.30. Lunch 1-1.30, cup of tea (prob with cake or biscuit but I don’t rate for that) at 5.15 or so, and dinner at 8-8.30. So contrasting - by 8 o’clock in Oz I remember starting to settle people down for the night!
Perfect Amr has been here all day…together we have walked 2 kms round the corridors (don’t worry, at a very slow pace) and this is recommended …so doing all the right things. Also Amr has had a frustrating day dealing with insurance red tape…they want docs from here about exactly what happened on admission , and a release signed by me, which I have done, so that my GP can release my records to them…all understandable but tedious, especially as this is Friday and admin is open 9 - 2pm Mon to Fri…anyway, he has been speaking to the insurance people, emailing and found a social worker here who understood and was very helpful and with whom he says he is actually in love!! - Amr liking a social worker!!! Trouble is the hospital wants a GOP form (guarantee of payment) before we go, and being the weekend who knows how long it will take….but we still hope to escape Monday, and get a bus to León on Monday or Tuesday.
Today we did not have the friendly morning staff of yesterday and Amr was not presented with lunch…so he’s off now, and I hope he has a good meal, and he says he needs a stiff drink! Only photo is my lunch, as not even sightseeing to report.Weiterlesen

ReisenderRosie, you are looking well! You are obviously doing the right things in terms of recovery. Keep it up! Louisa

Reisender2 km walks! Very impressive. Good news about your eating Rosie. Meal times are a hoot. I’m still recovering from Amr liking a social worker. The erratic behaviour has started.

ReisenderLooking much better Rosie - and actual food!! AND Amr in love with a social worker - no wonder he needs a stiff drink. Take it very easy xx

ReisenderBesides the very late meal times, the treatment and progress is as it would be here in Australia. You're on track to a good recovery. I hope Amr gets all the help he needs, it's a very complicated process for the best of us.

A few variations in hospital

Amr came quite early as we set up ourselves to watch the pageantry of the coronation. A fun diversion and they certainly do their pageants well. It was on Spanish TV and we also watched and listened to it on Amr’s iPad. So that kept us amused for hours! You republicans out there mightn’t agree, but it sure is a historic spectacle and fabulous music!
Otherwise usual hospital report: I have been promoted to semiblanda! For this 5pm snack, instead of a cup of tea I got a slab of queso fresca and little packs of quince paste to go with it. And for lunch I had yogurt as well as the usual bland stuff! All stays down and I feel hungry so I think all good signs! Surgeon still hope for Monday discharge. The 5pm offering is to keep you going till dinner at 8.30…so must try and stay up till then!
One frustration is that the nurses all wear masks and it is SO difficult to know who is who…some are obvious, but I have no idea what they really look like. We had the nice team on today and Amr was given a delicious lunch!
So Amr is now out in the world and said he plans to have a proper dinner at a nice place he found…meanwhile he is kindling till the dinner hour and came across a group singing…he sent short video which I’ll try to include.
Think that’s all… we did almost 2 kms circuiting the corridors.. my rather weird room mate has returned…she is a very noisy talker and I don’t get a single word she says. She gets my few words and we are amicable, but she constantly has her tv on as background- not always watching- and she snores ferociously!!! Amr brought me eyeshades for the tv flicker, and a nurse gave me ear plugs… wish me luck!!Weiterlesen

Sunday in hospital

There is absolutely nothing new to report today! The city is dead on Sunday morning - Amr said he was the only person on the street when he arrived here early. Probably buzzing more now - 6pm. So we did laps - 4 kms today, and I am eating more palatable food, but just can’t stomach the potato mash without salt or fat! We went to one of the sitting rooms and listened to a podcast of Outsiders and I had a nap while Amr watched a Spanish movie or tv show. So that’s it - now is the dead time waiting for 8.15 dinner!!
Only wrote today because if no entry you might think there was a crisis! And not even photos…
Ah, I have a photo Amr just sent me - his delicious feast of croquettas and pimientos…so jealous!Weiterlesen

Margaret's TravelsHi Rosie. Not long now till you will be back on the trail - an altered version maybe, but you will embrace it. It is another level of experience to spend time in villages. Looking forward to your posts in Penguins. Take care.

ReisenderAnd a glass of wine!! I thought it was your dinner when I saw the photo. 4 km walk is progress so hope there is escape news tomorrow

ReisenderI’m glad you wrote something. You’re quite right- we would worry.

Out in the world again!

Hurray! I was discharged this morning by the lovely doctor Michelle who has seen me through all this, and a lovely non English speaking surgeon. To my delight they said I could eat anything - that is nothing is forbidden, but just be moderate and not too spicy…etc…so I no longer a patient, and we had a lunch at Amr’s favourite tapas bar and I tasted delicious food at last.. and a little wine. And lots of water…I certainly will be moderate as do NOT want anything to go wrong again.
It is a beautiful day in Burgos and we walked gently quite a lot (that was part of the instruction too - walk a lot, but not Camino!). It was siesta time most of our walking time, so the city was quiet and so good for me to see it all feeling well. Walked along the beautiful tree-lined path beside the river and sat with kindles for quite a while. Saw pilgrims walking through….life is continuing.
Amr has booked a bus for us from Burgos (the bus station is conveniently just up the street from our hotel) to León tomorrow at 10.30, and that ride will be our viewing of the meseta. We stay in León 2 nights, another beautiful city, and then get another bus to Hospital de Órbigo (name of town, NOT a hospital!) and from there our old itinerary kicks in. Amr will walk, and I will get bus or whatever transport is available. Looked up the bus from there to the next place and it was a 16 min ride!! I’m actually starting to look forward to this life of swanning from village to village, and I’ll see all the familiar places. Anyway, more of that as it happens.
I had my first squeezed OJ at the little bar at the hotel…so good. Soon we will set off for dinner.
Just back from dinner: Amr had the menu del dia, but I just had soup a La Castellana which was more than enough…he had the soup too, and some salmon…now back at 10 pm and the tapas bars are still full and buzzing…surely they don’t go home now for dinner??Weiterlesen

ReisenderAhhh wonderful Ma! You’ve both been amazing getting through this ordeal. Back to semi normal Camino life!

An eventful day - now in León

Today was our bus trip to León. We left at 10.30 and Amr thought it was a direct trip, and about 2 hours…well, it took about 4 hours till we got to the hotel here…but it was fun, and much more interesting than if we’d just zoomed through on the autovia. We did set of on the freeway, then fairly soon turned off and from then till Sahagún, we called in on small towns and picked up and dropped off passengers, often peregrinos who wanted a bus for some stages! And we called in on several towns on the Camino like Carrión de los Condes, Mansilla de las Mulas, Sahagún and Terradillos de los Templarios…so we felt quite close to the Camino, and sometimes the camino was on a path beside the road and we saw pilgrims walking…we loved that! And we now have seen the meseta in spring….we were looking forward to walking it, but we saw the green of the grain crops, and ploughed fields ready for sunflowers - so beautiful.
And now we are in León, a beautiful city, with a spectacular cathedral, for 2 nights. Apparently they talk about a heatwave here, but it is cold in the morning (sometimes single figures) and gets to the low to middle 20s in the heat of the day, and by 6pm people are putting on jackets, quite cold…we are in the same hotel as 2018…an old building in the centre, and our room is on the 3rd floor, the top and we have sloping beams and a skylight…very charming.
We walked round a bit at first, looking for somewhere to snack and drink as it was almost 3 which isn’t the time for that…siesta time, and even bars close quite often…anyway, we had a little and after a bit more wandering, I went for a little lie down while Amr had more walking. Revived when he returned and we had a pre dinner drink at a place we’d seen, and then had a lovely walk right round the walls of the city - huge, like all these cities…even adjoining the cathedral. Then we went back to the place we’d had the drink and had a meal…a great place, as you can have a huge meal, or choose as little as you want. And we each had a glass of wine: Amr a Ramon Bilbao, and I had an Alberiño, both happy. Amr had an enormous salad, and I had stuffed peppers, my favourite (after chiperones) …both happy again. I find I can only eat small amounts, and slowly…I think my stomach has shrunk with so long not eating! Learning how to manage. That is our day in a nutshell - now off to bed.Weiterlesen

Margaret's TravelsSounds amazing. You will enjoy your new Camino style. These are the areas where I began my bus trip style. It is a still a beautiful version of the Camino - closer touch with the locals. Good luck.

Very peaceful day in León

A cold day today…max was 18° and single figures in the morning…but cloudless, sunny and sparkling! We got up leisurely, had breakfast and made our way to the cathedral at 9.30 when it opens….an excellent move, as by the time we had finished, groups and many people arriving, and we had a beautiful visit with only a handful of people wandering round. This cathedral is almost perfect - gothic, tall, stained glass windows covering almost every space. Simple and straightforward…we got an audio description from a QR code. Should not be compared with Burgos, such different styles - Burgos is a large complicated area, with added chapels over the centuries, and much more ornate…both wonderful in their own way, but at the moment I am in love with León! And amazingly there was no scaffolding so it looked magnificent.
After that we walked along the camino route to leave León, as far as the monasterio San Marcos…we have always walked past it at the beginning of our walking day, and never stopped to look. It is a wonderful building, the church and small museum remains, and the main building is now a parador…very fancy 5 star hotel. But the church and museum were lovely, and we sat in the square afterwards in the sun…
Walked back round the walls again and went to a bar and had coffees..my first since I first went to hospital and actually found it nice thank goodness! Just hadn’t felt like it before.
At 1.30 we went and sat in front of the cathedral as an Oz doctor walker who had kindly examined me originally in San Juan at the beginning of everything was walking into León today, and he and Amr had kept in touch and we met for lunch! He needed sustenance as he had a further 7 kms to walk, and we met in much better circumstances and chatted and found he was from Warwick, Queensland, where Pip Wolstenholme (my great niece) is and he was sure his wife would know her, as small community and the horsey people all know each other…small world…very nice guy, and then he set off again and we might meet up in Santiago (he will be with his wife by then) as our days seem to coincide after he has walked to Finisterre.
Kindle time and downtime…Amr went for a visit to the Gaudi building…we went last time and I decided to duck that one, and then we also were booked in (free, but number limit) to visit the equivalent of the León county council building (their translation)…a gorgeous old palatial building, a 45 minute tour. Well, it was beautiful, but the tour consisted of standing in the courtyard while a very animated and knowledgeable woman described it and the history but all in Spanish, Amr was fine, but I gave up about half way through…standing, and not understanding is very tiring!! I saw a couple of others slipping out too…so now quiet time before dinner.
Back from dinner..very nice but nothing to report and sleep time!!Weiterlesen

ReisenderStunning architecture. Glad you are out and about again- take it easy tho! Xx

ReisenderI thought the Burgos cathedral was the best too, till I saw those stained glass windows in Leon - we couldn't believe how the churches keep getting better ... then there's Santiago...! Great you have the time and energy to stop and enjoy these sights

Hospital de Órbigo - quiet and eventful!

Today was travel day to Hospital de Órbigo, and bus booked for 3.45, so we spent the morning having last walks round León, and left the bags for transfer. That was a bit of a kerfuffle as they knew we were making our own way here, and we weren’t on the transfer list…but our vouchers said transfer and they sorted it out and delivered them…good for us, as otherwise we would have had to lug them to the bus station in León, and as it turned out, to our hotel at this end! Anyway, that’s a boring aside, but we had a quiet morning in León, still lovely weather but cold - maxed at about 16°, and quite a breeze, making it even colder…I wore all my layers, and Amr has taken over my down jacket - he hadn’t anticipated these temperatures!
A funny thing happened when we were sitting in the plaza outside the Gaudi house in León…we were sitting in the seat, which has a statue of Gaudi sitting there, and we were beside him. Well, an Italian group with a guide suddenly surrounded us, and we realised they wanted photos (but not with us in them!) so of course we moved with our backpacks etc - by now we were checked out of the hotel - and the guide was very grateful and we were presented as peregrinos, and asked how far we walked each day, and from Australia was a great hit…we were celebrities for a minute…fun…and I found I could understand the Italian guide talking about León and the camino so much better than the Spanish guide of yesterday…my Spanish has gone so fluffy..
We had lunch at a bar we had sighted, and it was excellent..Amr had morcilla - blood sausage mixture, a specialty of León, and I had equivalent of sashimi cod on orange and some magic sauce, both on toast and both magnificent…Amr helped me with mine, still having small amounts.
Anyway, we set off to the bus station - it is in a state of renovation which we knew from arrival, bit chaotic, but we got our bus on time, about half an hour to here. This was walking that Amr was missing, but actually quite boring, especially leaving León through endless industrial areas and suburbs, then even the countryside was not cultivated much or interesting, so I didn’t feel too bad. Tomorrow he will stride out and can have his full dose of exercise!!
The bus driver knew we were going to Hospital de Órbigo (not its final destination) and when he said this was our stop we got out in bewilderment! Walking in we have always come from the countryside and walked over the very long bridge to our hotel - on the camino. We found ourselves in a village, rather desolate, no sign of river or bridge…Amr turned on Google and we found it was a fairly short walk to the hotel, so we followed directions, through little streets, all shuttered, very little sign of life, till it said your hotel is very close, and there it was - we approached from the opposite direction - the bridge isn’t a vehicle bridge - and at first we’re totally disoriented…but there was the bridge, and we settled in, our bags were here! Phew.
We had a walk over the bridge, just for the sake of it , and a bit of a wander, but this town has nothing really to offer sightseeing wise, so we are now showered, done our washing and relaxing in the bar - Amr with a vino Tinto, and I have a “limonada” which looks and tastes like sangria! Dinner in about half an hour.Weiterlesen

We are reunited at Astorga!

From now on there will be 2 stories to tell - Amr’s camino day, and my bus experience. I have to say I was a little nervous at first, as I realise I usually depend on Amr to do the talking, so probably good to be forced to be independent! Anyway, for me all was good - once we looked at the map we realised how the road and bus route went, and Amr walked me to the bus stop (short walk) and set off walking at about 9.30…later than normal for walkers, and from now on he will be earlier. My bus was supposed to arrive just after 10, but one sailed past (? not in service), and another turned off before my stop…wondered if I was in the right place, but all was well, after 10 minutes a third one came heading for Astorga - cost €1.55, a bit cheaper than a taxi! Got here about 11, a really cold day again - 4° early, and rose to 11° by then…again, glad of layers.
Checked into hotel (their computer knew my passport from last time!), room ready by 1pm and bags arrived while is was there. So I set off walking round this lovely little walled city, high on a hill. It has a chocolate factory and is famous for it, also some special pastries. Many churches, and of course an enormous cathedral. The main plaza looks like it is being set up for a huge chess tournament. I walked along the walls in a park area, and there were some ominous clouds flying overhead even though mostly sunny in Astorga…poor Amr texted to say there was a storm right over the camino, and I could see where a cloud was doing that…the hardships of being a pilgrim! Back to hotel and got room key, relaxed and waited for Amr who arrived a close to 2.30.
So, Amr’s story - he says it was fairly boring countryside at first, but improves as you approach Astorga. Then they had the rain…and even hail! He says about 40 minutes of rain with 20 mins of hail…just small, not worrisome, but a pity for his first day back walking…he met up with Antony, the Oz doctor - who we’d also seen briefly at breakfast, we seem to be on the same schedule, but am sure he’ll be ahead soon. It was fun being able to see his location on the app, but for ages it kept saying he was 5 kms away, prob as the crow flies.
Sunny here by the time he arrived, though we had a short shower too, and amazing to reunite, even though that sounds a bit silly! After a bit of unwinding, we went and shared a salad for lunch, and did more walking round the town, and visited the cathedral at a very good time when there were not many visitors…late-ish afternoon.
Now back from dinner..no photos because we ate before thinking of it! But again Antony walked into our hotel and was wanting dinner - a typical Astorga dish, which was what Amr was planning…called Cocido Maragota - a quite heavy dish that comes in 3 “courses”…the first is a collection of boiled meats with potatoes, then a plate of chickpeas and cabbage and then washed down with a broth! Antony joined us and both the boys loved it. I had a garlic soup with bread and an egg yolk in it and very flavoursome, then ashamed to say a vegetable lasagna (was desperate for veges)…it was delicious but could only eat barely half. So all content and ready for bed.Weiterlesen

Margaret's TravelsStill sounds a great day of seeing the countryside and the village. Hope the ‘bus’ approach will turn out well for you. The stories from today seem a great start.

Now at Rabanal del Camino

A similar dual day. Amr left at about 8.30, and I walked with him to the end of Astorga, another chilly morning, and even chillier here at Rabanal. But beautiful and sparkling, perfect walking weather and I have to say I felt very jealous seeing people setting off…
Anyway, after Amr left, I walked back and did a circuit of the city via that pretty park on the walls, and when I got to the Plaza Mayor I found that the chess setup was now in action. It is a tournament for school students…one school versus another, lots of activity! The grand final will eventually be held in León. So I wiled away the morning, walking, reading and enjoying the beautiful day. I didn’t have to checkout of the hotel till 12, so I swanned in and out at will, and finally got a taxi here at about 12.45. I could see that Amr was getting close to the end, and the taxi followed the camino all the way along the little road (not a bus route!)…almost felt I was walking it! We must have passed him, but I didn’t see him - maybe when there were bushes between the track and the road…
When I arrived I saw that Amr was very close, so went down to meet him and we checked in together. We’ve been here twice before too, nice hotel in this tiny village, except no lift, and Amr had to lug the bags up to the second floor…poor thing, after walking 21 kms! Had snacky lunch and will have dinner here - has a good menu and good price. Now relaxing, and Amr unwinding.. we’ve read that there are monks who sing Gregorian chants for vespers every day at 7 which sounds wonderful…will certainly check that out!
Now back from Vespers and dinner. The little church is XII century Romanesque, very atmospheric, and it was absolutely full, we were glad we were 10 mins early and had a seat. Very peaceful plainsong chanting in Latin by Benedictine monks…very glad we went. Then back for dinner…also good. Amr had a wonderful white bean salad - sort of in a sauce of gazpacho, just delicious, and cod, and I had peppers stuffed with bacalao with an amazing sauce. Happy and ready for bed.Weiterlesen

Margaret's TravelsI understand how hard it is hard to see others walk when you can’t, but the deeper view of the villages goes some way to compensating. Sounds wonderful.

ReisenderGood to see the new arrangements are working and the monks chanting would have been wonderful. 😊😊

A truly beautiful day - at Acebo

A really good day! Still cold, about 2° at 7am, but bright and great walking conditions. After breakfast Amr set off at about 8.15 and I waited in the hotel, taxi not due till 9.50, and it was a share taxi, with another couple who were to be driven to Ponferrada (where we will be going tomorrow)…these little hotels like to clear you out so that they can get the rooms ready for the next wave of walkers who will soon be arriving! So at about the appointed hour the taxi arrived, with an Irish/English elderly couple - very relaxed and friendly - and we chatted while the driver had a coffee and chatted with the hotel owner! Then we set off, and when he wanted to say something he would talk into his phone which came out with the English translation in a very proper voice…!
The walk today is one of my favourite days - when you go over the highest point of the camino (even higher altitude than the Pyrenees) and with difficulty walk down the other side with paths of loose stones, but gorgeous views of Ponferrada and the whole valley below. And you pass the Iron Cross, a special marker, where people leave stones and take photos etc…well, Luís, the taxi driver, said we’d stop there for photos, as the road, which I’d never noticed before when walking, goes right alongside…so that was a thrill as we didn’t miss that high point, and the even more amazing thing was that when I stalked Amr he was almost there too, so we waited a few minutes, and there he was!! What a moment! Dot and Sean, the other couple, we’re almost as excited as I was…and Luís thought Amr wanted a lift too!!..we put him straight on that!…so off we went again, seeing all the views that you would see walking, and I have to say I don’t feel too deprived at all from not walking.
We are now at this little village half way down the mountain side, and staying in a very sweet room and very content. This place has another newer, bigger and very posh property a few hundred metres down the road where we will have dinner, as here does not do evening meals. It will be a communal pilgrim meal, as besides being upmarket, it also has an upmarket albergue with dormitory rooms, and you book and pay for your dinner, select from the menu all in advance! Extremely organised…but it also has a pool, spa, masseuse etc! The people in both places were both so helpful and kind - I had arrived early, before booking in time of course, but they brought me some camomile tea and I had a relaxed wait, so they’re not just super-organised! I happened to chat to 2 different Aussie women in my 2 waiting places - one from Davidson, and one from Port Macquarie, and the taxi had little koala dingle-dangles that an Aussie had given him! He is going to take me from here to Ponferrada tomorrow morning.
So Amr arrived about 1.20. Quite tired after the difficult downhill bit, even though the total distance is about 18 kms. This is siesta time and he is horizontal and watching Netflix I think! We had a little lunch together, and will have dinner at 7 on the dot…have ordered salad, fish and a lemon dessert for us both!
Will put photos of the beautiful views, and one of me at the iron cross before I met Amr…we did a selfie there but it’s awful of both of us!!Weiterlesen

At Ponferrada, another lovely day

Today was easy for me, and a hard downhill walk for Amr. He left at 8am and set off for the hardest downhill bit to Molinaseca….some loose stones, and some sloping slate…so glad it wasn’t raining…after Molinaseca it is ok walking, but a not very interesting path along the road into Ponferrada. As I got my taxi at 9.30 (Luís from yesterday) I was amazed seeing from the road how steep and mountainous this section is. But I rode past in my taxi, and was dropped near the Plaza del Ayuntamiento where our hotel is. Much too early to check in, but was able to get a map and info on how to find a laundromat and the bus station. Also could leave my main backpack and just take my valuables in a small bag. Easy.
A lovely day, and much warmer now that we are down from the heights. Ponferrada is a comfortable city, and found the nearby laundromat and set off for the bus station, which turned out to be a 2 km walk along an Avenida in the modern part of the city. Good to know where to find it tomorrow when I get a bus to Villafranca del Bierzo. The bus station was undergoing renovations, as they all seem to be, and not organised from what I could see, and a long line waiting at a ticket machine, so decided to do it online…never quite sure if you can hop on and just pay cash. When I did do it on my ipad I had to charge the credit card €1.85!! A little cheaper than the €30 taxi rides…I guess it all balances out!!
So that was quite good walking, and when I got back Amr was soon going to arrive…sat on a bench in the square and waited…so good. Arrived at about 12.15 I think. He said it was as tough as I had remembered, and we sat at a bar and had beers and tostadas…and a nice chat with Kelly from Port Macquarie who we had shared a dinner table with last night, and I also saw Lucy from Wales (also at dinner) as she arrived into Ponferrada, but she is going to stay a little further on today. You keep seeing the same familiar people popping up from time to time.
By that time it was almost ok to check in and our room was ready, so unpacked and took all the dirty clothes to the laundromat! A clean start tomorrow! Had a wander, only in shirts - the first time not in layers and jackets…it will cool down overnight, but only to about 6 and soon warms up again, specially if you are walking…we are having dinner tonight at a rather nice looking restaurant attached to the hotel..La Violeta.Weiterlesen

Villafranca del Bierzo - beautiful town

First, thank you for so many birthday greetings when I woke up this morning!! So happy, and a great way to start the day.
And today was again lovely…this is getting very repetitive, but this area is so beautiful. It is still quite cool in the mornings - about 6° again, so Amr left at 8.40, but didn’t even take extra fleece as it rapidly warms up, specially if you’re walking, and in the afternoons it is a very comfortable mid 20s. This was one walk I am very envious of, as it goes through and looking down at the vineyards of the Bierzo valley, and is where we saw them grape picking both times in October. By now the vines are green and well and truly sprouting with leaves, a contrast to the withered stalks we saw in the early days of this camino. Amr walked 25 kms, quite a long day, but no drastic ups and downs, arrived here at a bit after 3, but fairly knackered!
I had my exercise walking to the bus station in Ponferrada, and got the 11.40 bus…all a bit vague at the bus station, no board with departures etc, but managed to find which bay it left from, and we finally pulled out at 12… just a half hour ride to Villafranca, and as we went through Cacabelos I could see we were extremely close to where Amr had stopped for some food (a paella, just freshly made). Was tempted to get out and walk the rest of the way with him, but behaved and didn’t!! Anyway, was dropped here in the one bus stop, but had no real idea where I was…it is a small town and soon sorted it out, and sat in the main square where our hotel is, and had a beer and a coffee, both with complimentary tapas, as the hotel check in time was 2pm. Very relaxing.
Checked in at 2, and this is a charming place - we have not stayed here before. Quite a spacious room, and of course, spotless. Had time to unpack the bits I needed and settle in before setting out again to explore and meet Amr. Found the Tabac shop which the helpful woman at reception told me would sell tickets and know about to tomorrow’s destination, Ambasmestas, a tiny village, about 15 kms walk from here. He was shut, siesta time, so walked on and walked back along the camino and before long Amr turned up! He wanted a drink before showering etc, so we sat in the plaza again and caught up over a beer and a tonic (this is often my drink at the moment!). Now he is clean and watching fluff on his iPad and I have had a couple of further exploratory excursions…found the Tabac man open who said no buses to Ambasmestas tomorrow, but at the tourist information the helpful woman said yes, there is one at 1.30 and told me where its bus stop is - a small bus company that my friend, Luís, the taxi driver, had mentioned. So am going to try for that tomorrow- another adventure! If all fails I can get a taxi.
So that’s where we stand now…there are no special places to eat that I could find for my birthday dinner…but all have the usual good stuff, and it will be fun. I did try and see if they were open at where we used to stay, as their dinners were very good, but they were all shuttered down sadly - maybe covid?? …or just closed… Forgot to mention that last night in Ponferrada we did have a special dinner at the hotel’s good restaurant…we started off with a complimentary croquetta each, then shared a dish of delicious grilled vegetables, and then Amr had a local specialty of a soupy dish with blood sausage, chorizo and pork cheek, which was delicious, but I had my favourite chiperones a la plancha with a black garlic mayo to dip them in…absolutely yum. So that was the gala dinner! But it will be fun tonight - it always is.
Now back from dinner and will add a quick addendum. Ate at one of the restaurants in the plaza, and not gourmet, but very good. A €14 3 course dinner…I started with pumpkin and zucchini soup, Amr a bean, chickpea, ham and prawn mix, and for main Amr had fish and I had chicken drumsticks in a yum sauce and way too many French fries. All good, and will add photos of the many aspects of the day.Weiterlesen

Another cloudless day…Ambasmestas

Today Amr beat me to this tiny town Ambasmestas. He left leisurely at about 9.20, or that’s when we parted, as I walked with him a short distance and then turned off to find my bus stop. It was only a 15.4 km distance, no huge ups and downs, and while a perfect day again, was mostly along the road winding from the Bierzo valley to the next one, along the valley floor.
My bus wasn’t until 1.30 so I filled in the time reading, didn’t have to check out of our sweet little hotel till 12 fortunately, and when I left I found a sunny bench in the park…it still starts chilly at 6° but more and more rapidly warms up…I was hot by the time I got to the bus stop and had to shed a layer. Happy to find 3 other people also waiting for the bus, as the bus stop looked totally rundown and abandoned…I was right beside a roundabout along the “main” road - not a very busy one, as main as round here gets.
About only 10 minutes after the due time, it actually came…a little minibus which already was almost full…so we all squeezed in…you could hardly fit down the aisle, and with backpacks etc almost impossible…but we managed. The poor elderly Dutch woman I had been chatting to had real difficulty as she had a large duffel bag as well. It cost €1.50, so not complaining!! When an American couple got off at the first stop the Dutch woman and I had to squeeze off again just to let them out…anyway, it actually stopped at all these little places along the way, and I found myself here quite quickly, arrived before 2pm and my app said Amr was 0 kms away, so I found I was beside the hotel, and he was having a snack in the bar, already checked in.
One interesting thing - or really only interesting to us - is that the place we stayed at before is not shuttered or closed at all, I found it by accident today, on the next corner down, in fact it is the place on the corner where I took photo of Amr setting off. Happy about that!
So not much else of interest to say today. We will have dinner here at the hotel’s dining room. All good, and tomorrow I hope to find a bus to take me to O’Cebreiro, which is the big climb for Amr (but fortunately not a long distance) and is where we meet Rachel and Richard…I think they have already started on their journey from Connecticut!Weiterlesen
Margaret's TravelsSounds wonderful - it is a vibrant city. Good to see the blue sky - hope that is a good sign.
