    Last Day - Athens, Greece

    February 22, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Well, our trip is near the end. We only have the travel home to go. As we sit here in the airport, we think back to the fun we had!

I really hope that Adina enjoyed the trip! And that she found Greece to be as wonderful as I do!

**Post Greece note: the Acropolis Hill Hotel was amazing! Stay there next time!

***CDG note: the Holiday Inn Express at the CDG was a quick train-to-walk away and it was really great!

Here are some of our favorite things:

    Wines:
Adina........................Nemea 2020 from Aivalia Winery (red)
Mine..........................Rose Vogiatzis from Ktima Vogiatzis (rosé)

    Alcohol:
    Adina........................Mastic (ouzo was like medicine!)
    Mine..........................Mastic

    Dinners:
Adina.........................Dinner the first night! She liked getting all the small plates and being able to share and try all kinds of new stuff!
Mine.......................... probably the same for the same reason!

    Favorite New Dish:
Adina........................ All the varieties of spinach pie!
    Mine.......................... Spicy Sausage Souvlaki

    Favorite Flavor Ice Cream:
Adina......................... Baklava, but the coconut was really good. And the most unique was the chocolate orange cookie.
Mine........................... Tiramisu and pistachio from Aegina

    Favorite Place We Went:
Adina.......................... Hydra. It was so magical!
Mine............................ The Acropolis overlook that I ran to everyday!

    Favorite Thing We Did:
Adina.......................... The cruise to the islands! And learning about the culture because she lives learning, but she also liked the food tour. Now she can look for Greek wine at home and have something to base her decisions on!
Mine............................ I liked the food tour. And exploring the Plaka even more!

    Day 3 - Athens, Greece

    February 20, 2023 in Greece ⋅ 🌙 57 °F

Today was a much more relaxed kind of day! After a run that passed me by the Acropolis and the original Olympic stadium, Adina and I sat on the roof and read.

Then we went in search of coffee and stamps. We drank our coffee as I wrote out postcards to people back home. Then we went in search of a gift shop. We had been there and bought some stuff yesterday, but Bella (Adina's daughter) made a request for more. We were unsuccessful because they were closed today. A lot of the gift shops were closed today. It was so weird!

We are lunch listening to a street performer near the Parthenon. After a quick stop at the hotel, we made our way to the wine tour. Along the way, we found a really great beer shop! Now it seems I have to check my luggage....🫤

The tour was really great. Constantine (our guide) was a bit late, but she made up for it. We tried all kinds of wine and liquors from Greece. And the food (souvlaki and mushroom risotto capped off by tiramisu ice cream) was amazing!!

Time for bed. EARLY morning! We're cruising the islands!

    Day 2 Athens, Greece

    February 19, 2023 in Greece

This morning I got up and went exploring on a run around the Acropolis. It was so nice to find the Plaka and run through before it got really busy!

Then I came back, ate breakfast at the hotel (yum!), and then Adina and I headed to back to the Acropolis.

After walking around the Parthenon, we went to the Acropolis Museum and excavation site. The site was not open yet when Gary and I came last time.

From there we went in search of food, but got distracted by shopping! We both got all kinds of great souvenirs! I can't wait to give mine to people!

We didn't find food right away, so I got coconut ice cream! We did eventually find food that was portable (my second helping of spinach pie for the day - first was at breakfast) and ate in a park and people watched.

We had passed an "ice cream donut" place before lunch. It had my birthday on the "today's date". Serendipity?

Yes, it was delicious! Orange cream!

I got a bunch of post cards too, but now I have to get stamps! That's on the list for tomorrow!

We walked around and found the meeting place for our upcoming tours, got some dinner to go, and headed back to the hotel. Adina stopped and got a bottle of wine on the way.

There is a patio on the roof of the hotel. It looks out on the Acropolis. I couldn't get a better view for our evening meal!!

Tomorrow is the food and wine tour! And I'm going to try to run to/on the original Olympic stadium. What a wonderful day!

    Travel - Day 1

    February 18, 2023 in Greece

Whew! What a day(s)! Adina and I left Detroit on Friday (2/17) at 9pm. I don't remember much of the next 10 hours, but there was a short layover in Amsterdam and a lot of plane sleeping and drooling...well, according to Adina...

But here we are! In Athens, Greece!! We're staying at the Acropolis Hill Hotel. This place is really great! 10 minutes from the Plaka and the Acropolis! They even arranged travel from the airport for us. We didn't have to worry about a thing when we finally got in! Our room is actually really big by Greek stands!

We had dinner at the Acropolis Restaurant. We just got a bunch of appetizers and shared: spinach pie, grape leaves, Greek salad (choriatikid), tzatziki and bread (Adina had fresh olives too).

We were so stuffed! So we walked up to see the Acropolis all lit up at night, then came back to the hotel. We're both ready for some sleep in a real bed!

    Day 12: Travel Home

    August 1, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

We got one last short ride on today - Chutes and Ladders from yesterday. It was much better when you took out all the rest of that other stuff!!

Then it was off to the airport...bye Colorado!

  • Day 11

    Day 11: Colorado Springs

    August 1, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Today's ride was both great and terrible! It started out with a looooooong gradual climb. The guy who took our picture a couple of days ago said that it was a 5 mile climb, but then it was a fun downhill. Well, we rode a trail to a dirt road. The dirt road was interesting because it had old railroad tunnels. It even had one that was collapsed. That was all interesting, but that was when things turned terrible. We had to climb Buckhorn and that was a horrible trail. I ended up walking all of it. It was too steep and too many rocks/roots! 😵‍💫

We got to the top and Gary couldn't figure out which way to go, so we had a few false starts. That wasn't bad, but when we finally found the correct trail (Capitan Jack's), that downhill was too tricky for me to ride! I was so mad! 😡 I had ridden 10 miles UPHILL for this trail and I couldn't ride it!! And when I did try to ride it I fell! 🩹 But I did see a fox on the trail, so that was cool!

We made it down, eventually, but we still had to ride the Chutes Trail and I was out of water (Gary too). But we tried it and that was really fun!! Back at the car, we ate sandwiches and drank some carbonated water that I had brought to be a treat for lunch. We were both wiped out! It ended up being harder than anyone said and twice as long!

We headed off to Pike's Peak Brewing to drown our sorrows. The beer was meh. There was a different brewery across the street so we jumped over there. Their beer was much better!! We stopped to get beer to bring home, then went to the Garden of the Gods. There was a mountain that we had seen a bunch of people on and wanted to go up. But the last time we were here we ran out of time. Today made up for that. We got to the top and just sat. Then we went in search of dinner.

We were told there was the "best buffalo burgers" at the Trading Post. We went there for dinner. After dinner we went looking for Balanced Rock. We had been there on our honeymoon and Gary wanted to go again. We found it! There were so many people!!

Then we went to Batch Slapped for the last of the Colorado beer. Then it was back to the hotel to try to get everything packed up! 🧳
