  • First beers out in 7 weeks! & Shopping

    15. maj 2020, New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

This afternoon we had a look around the shops. Ashleigh bought a new hoodie as he ripped his one before when he fell off his bike. I got a thin hooded jacket from Kathmandu in the sale got it for $60 from $149. Its fleece lined and quick drying so thought it would be good for when we go walking on the south island. We went for a walk by the lake late afternoon. We then walked to Lakehouse where conny works for a drink. We had to order food to be able to get a drink (due to level 2 rules) so we just got a bowl of chips. We enjoyed a cold craft beer. It was great to be able to go out for drinks againLæs mere

  • Local hot springs & Mexican

    16. maj 2020, New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

This afternoon we went to the hot springs at Otumuheke. It was nice we were able to actually go in there now we are at level 2. We relaxed in the top pool by the waterfall. It was warm but not as hot as it was in the summer. The water was a little low but there was enough to sit in it.

In the evening we went out for a meal at the Mexican in Taupo tejeno. We had tacos with chicken, pulled pork and beef. We enjoyed a couple of Margarita cocktails after our meal.

This afternoon we went for a walk. It was a lovely sunny day. We walked up a hill and stumbled across a beautiful Chapel and Vineyard. It was a shame the vineyard cafe wasn't open due to level 2 rules! That would of been very tempting. It was nice to walk around anyway.Læs mere

  • Wairakei Terraces & Thermal pools

    19. maj 2020, New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

This morning we cycled to Wairakei Terraces & thermal health spa. When we arrived it was empty we had the natural hot thermal pools to ourselves. I guess that's one good thing about lockdown most of the tourists have gone! There were 4 different mineral pools all different temperatures. The top one was 46 degrees! You couldn't sit in it for long. The others were about 37 degrees. It was such a beautiful place. We spent most the day there swimming, relaxing and reading. It only cost $25 for entry which is a lot cheaper than what you would pay for a spa at home.Læs mere

  • Rafting, Gondola/Luge & Redwoods

    20. maj 2020, New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

This morning we picked up the hire car at 8.30 from RAD. We drove straight to Roturoa rafting. It was such a nice feeling to be on the road again. We arrived early so we went to the cafe next door for a coffee. The cafe was called Okere Falls Store. It had a lovely beer garden at the back so we sat outside in the sun. We then went for short stroll across the bridge over the river where Ashleigh will be doing his rafting.

    Ashleighs rafting experience

At Rafting Rotorua, I was greeted with my guide and given all the gear to get into ready to get on the river. We were handed our helmets which I was able to attach my gopro to. Excited to go, the guide introduced us all together who would be on his raft. He takes us across the road where the raft is there ready to get on. He tells us he has worked all over the world such as Norway and Japan but this is the one he keeps coming back to as it is the most exciting and safe.

As we cross the highway, he tells us this is the most dangerous part of the whole experience. We get onto the raft and gives us a quick briefing of what we will be going down. From the start there was a few smallish rapids. We do a 180° spin and go down some of them backwards; this is fun. Then we pull in at a calm bit and he explains whats up next. We are shown what to do under his instructions from sitting on the edge of the dingy to paddle, to which handles to grab when he says hold on and then how to crouch inside the raft when we hit the big bits.

We go down some fast flowing water and small falls getting wet along the way. Then we could get out of the boat for a quick swim before carrying on. We pull in just before the big 7 metre fall which is the largest commercially taken rafted fall in the world, apparently.

When we pull in, the other rafts are already there and the guides tell us a legend of how the river got it's name Kaituna which is to eat fish in maori. He tells us that a chief once died at the fall and we must let him know that we respect the river and ask him to allow us to pass the fall safely. If we do not call to hi. As we go down then he might pull us under the water and slap us about a bit before we can go on. After repeating what to say after the guide, there is no way any of us are going to remember it. Looks like we're in for a few underwater slaps from the maori waterfall chief.

Our guide puts me towards the front of the raft with the others so we well be more likely to tip at the bottom (all part of the fun). We don't tip and have survived it without being pulled under and slapped about. Thank you maori waterfall chief.

At the next rapids, the guide gives us the option to jump out and go down these off the boat. I take this option which was pretty good.

Not too far after that, we come to the end of the tour and carry the raft up to the car park before being driven back to the base for a warm shower.

While Ashleigh did his rafting Conny and I went with the photographer a long a path by the river. We were able to watch Ashleigh go down the first waterfall and the large waterfall Okere Falls. I managed to catch a video. We found some caves near the waterfall while we were there. We then got back on the road and stopped off at a picturesque spot by the lake to have our packed lunch.

Next we drove to Skyline Roturoa to go up the gondola and to do the luge. The luge is a part go-cart, part toboggan and moves by gravity. We went up in the 900m long gondala and had spectacular views of Lake Rotorua, the city and steaming geothermal vistas. At the top is known as Rotovegas.

We then headed to the top of the gondola with excitement. We had 3 goes on the ride. The first was scenic, then intermediate and last advanced. It got quicker by the 3rd track. It was great fun! Ashleigh managed to get a video on his go pro. After this we went to Wendy's a fast food restaurant for a burger and fries. We wanted to eat in but when we arrived they asked us to download an app to order online and pick up. Unfortunately the app didn't work on our UK phones so we had ton go through drive through and then sat in to eat inside.

Next we drove to Redwoods to do the night tree walk. It was such a magical place. We were 20m high up in the trees surrounded by lanterns and different coloured lights. In the evening we stayed at a lovely air b&b in Tauranga. The couple Judith and Leon were very welcoming.

We woke up about 8.30 had breakfast and left about 10am. Arrived at Tuaranga for a hike up to Mt Maunganui. We had 360 degree views over the Bay of Plenty. The walk was definitely worth it and it was a beautiful sunny day. We then walked down to Mt Maunganui beach. We stopped in a cafe for lunch. On the way back we stopped off at Kaiate Falls to do the hike to the waterfall. It was very impressive surrounded by forests. On the drive back to Taupo the sat nav took us up some bumpy windy roads. But it meant we catched the sunset over the hills.Læs mere

  • Rose garden, Lake and Wine

    22. maj 2020, New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Back to base in Taupo. Feels like it's are home now we've spent so long there! We went for a walk through the rose garden by the lake and walked down to the lake. It was a lovely sunny day, but getting cold now. We then strolled to a local coffee shop, cafe Baku. Enjoyed a latte and custard slice. I was able to use their WiFi to catch up on my travel blog and Ashleigh downloaded photos and videos from his gopro.

In the evening we went to Lakehouse for a few glasses of wine. It was nice to see it busy for a change since after lockdown. There must of been tourists and kiwis visiting the area for a weekend away. From this Thursday you can go to pubs and bars for a drink so that could of been another reason why.

  • Goodbye Taupo! Back on the road again :D

    1. juni 2020, New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

This morning we picked up some pies from our favourite bakery in Taupo (Paetiki bakery) to take with us for the road trip. We got on the intercity bus at 2pm. It was strange leaving Taupo after living here for 4 months. (2 months working and 2 months in lockdown) we arrived at Porirua bus stop to meet Chris and John's friends Deb and Russ, who kindly picked us up. We arrived at their beautiful home in Titahi Bay by the sea in the evening. We couldn't see the views because it was dark, but we were looking forward to waking up and seeing the view in the morning. We sat in the lounge in the evening and had cheese and biscuits. Deb and Russ were very welcoming.Læs mere

  • Titahi Bay&Paekakariki Escarpment Track

    2. juni 2020, New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

We woke up to a beautiful sunny morning. The first picture and video is on the decking at Deb and Russ's house at Titahi bay. You can see the south island and manta island from there. We had eggs and bacon on toast for breakfast and then headed to the Escarpment track which is 10km long. We started in Pukerua and finished in Paekakariki Town. Apparently this way was steeper starting in Pukerua but we thought it would be nice to end in a town where we could get some lunch and a coffee. We went up some steep steps a long the cliff edge and walked along a few swing bridges and in to the forests. The track is 220m above sea level. It took us 3 hours in total to complete. We went to the beach at Paekakariki when we got there and then went to a cafe called the deli for some lunch. I had a quinoa salad and a iced coffee.

In the evening we went for another walk down to Titahi bay when the sun was coming down and then we had roast lamb in the evening.

  • Wellington City

    3. juni 2020, New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

This morning we said goodbye to Russ and Deb. We spoke to Chris and John on facetime. It was lovely to see and speak to them. They then dropped us off at Porirua Station. We met our friend Jeanine for a coffee at Butlers chocolate cafe. We were able to choose some chocolates to go with it and we had a warm raspberry muffin with it, it was delicious.

We got a train in to Wellington Station and walked to our hostel the Dwellington about a 10 minute walk from the station. When we arrived we had a look around. It was a very fancy hostel with a cinema room, spacious lounge and kitchen and a very large herb and spices rack. We stayed in a triple room and met our friend Kyra there. We even had towels which you don't normally get in a dorm room. After we checked in we got on the bus in to the centre. Transport is free in Wellington at the moment. We went to Te Papa museum as there were still sections of it we haven't done.

In the evening we went to an Irish bar for drinks and met our friend Ren who has been staying in Wellington during lockdown. After that we went out for food at a Malaysian restaurant.

  • Ferry over to Picton

    4. juni 2020, New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

This morning we woke up at 6.30 to get the ferry over to Picton from the interislander terminal. We checked in our large bags and waited about half an hour before getting on the ferry. We left at 9.30am. Not everything was open on the ferry due to covid 19. No shops were open. But we were able to get some chips and a coffee on board. We went out on the deck, the sea was quite calm. Unfortunately the top deck was closed. Coming in to picton the sea was turquoise and there were low clouds and fog, it was very picturesque.

We got in to Picton around 1pm. We picked up our hire car from thrifty. We only paid $212 each for 4 weeks. We picked a Mitsubishi Outlander due to having lots of boot space and a comfortable car for the 4 weeks. We decided to call the car silver lining! We checked in to tombstone backpackers around 2pm. We booked a family room as it was the same price as a dorm room. The room is lovely.

Unfortunately it was raining most the day but we did get out and go for a walk around picton Harbour. In the evening we went to the supermarket. We had spicy chicken, homemade wedges and veg and shared a nice bottle of sauvignon blanc called Bay and the Barnes block back at the hostel which was recommended by a local in the supermarket . We also got some travel planning done for the south island tip.

  • Tirohanga Track and Karaka Point

    5. juni 2020, New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We naturally woke up early and had free homemade warm scones for breakfast at the hostel. They were delicious. We then drove to the Tirohanga track and hiked 6.5km to the top through fern forest. We saw lots of fantail birds who kept swooping in next to us and flying away again. They aren't shy at call and very curious. The track was very muddy I stupidly walked up in my trainers with no grip and was slipping a lot. That taught me a lesson to always where my hiking boots. When we arrived at the top we had beautiful views over Picton, Waikawa and the Marlborough Sounds.

We then went to Picton Harbour to see about doing a boat tour. It was quite expensive so we thought we may do it when we come back to picton. We decided to drive to Karaka point Lookout. It had a small track to walk down to the beach overlooking the Malbourough sounds. Ashleigh found some mussels and we found a blue starfish on the beach we weren't sure if it was alive or not so we put it back in the sea. After the walk we went for a coffee by picton Harbour. In the evening we ate fried rice with Teriyaki sauce and vegetables which I cooked for everyone. Ashleigh and I then went to Essons track to see the glowworms. We had our torch and spotted some after 20 minutes of walking through the dark forest. It was very magical.

  • Queen charlotte drive to Nelson

    6. juni 2020, New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

This morning we drove down the Queen charlotte track to Nelson. We drove down very windy roads surrounded by native forests. The views were amazing of the Malbourough sounds looking out to sea. We stopped off at a view point on the way called Cullen point. Kyra did a introductory video for her vlog here of us all introducing ourselves. It will soon be up on YouTube. We stopped of at Havelock, famous for its green mussels. We went to the Mussel Pot to try them. It kept Ashleigh happy. I also tried one which was very adventurous for me! It didn't taste so bad just tasted of garlic and cream, but I wasn't too keen on the chewy slimy texture.

We then drove on to Nelson down more windy roads. I was starting to feel a little car sick. When we arrived at Paradiso hostel. The board was down at reception and note to say they were in the kitchen. The lady was behind reception and when we asked if we could check in she said she was on her lunch and the computer wasn't working. She was a bit rude. She said to come back later but make ourselves at home. It was funny she said this when we rang to make a booking she said she was not in the office and on lunch and to book on booking.com and when we then rang again the evening before she said she was out at the shop so couldn't book for us!

As we couldn't check in yet we decided to walk in to Nelson. Nelson was surprisingly bigger than I thought. Lots of shops cafes and restaurants. We walked up some steps to the gardens and there was a church at the top. We then walked to Nelson Harbour. On the way back we stopped off at countdown to get some ingredients for spag bol. When we got back the lady wasn't at reception... No surprise there. We had to phone her. She came down and said she couldn't fit us in the same 4 bed dorm so we had to go in separate dorms. Ashleigh and I in one, Conny and Kyra in the other. The bathrooms aren't very clean here and the bunk beds aren't comfortable.

We did however enjoy spag bol with garlic bread for our evening meal. We were all very hungry after a long day. The hostel was very busy and noisy. A lot of people drunk. It could well be a long night. Hoping to get some sleep.

  • Drive to Abel Tasman

    7. juni 2020, New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Woke up early this morning. Didn't get much sleep due to the uncomfortable bunk beds and the toilet constantly running. Luckily we didn't hear the loud drunk people as we were the other side of the hostel.

We all set off early, we all wanted to get out of the hostel as quickly as could. We then drove to do a hike up to the centre of New Zealand Monument in Nelson. (See the centre of NZ information below) it took only 20 minutes to reach the top and we had 360 degree views over the city, the sea and the hills.

Next we drove to Tahunanui beach. The sun was shining and there were lots of dogs running around. We then went to Richmond for a food shop at pac n save to stock up for the next few days as we knew there wouldn't be a supermarket where we were staying. We had another scenic drive today surrounded by mountains and hills going up windy roads.

We checked in to the the barn holiday park about 3pm. We are staying in a campsite but we are staying in luxury here as we have our own room and comfortable beds. The holiday park is right on the beach at the abel tasman, its a beautiful spot. We walked down to the beach this afternoon and booked a kayak tour which we are all excited about! Ashleigh and I went for a walk early evening to porters beach. It was a little cold but it was a nice evening. We spotted a big brown bird looked a bit like a kiwi but bigger.

  • Kayaking the Abel Tasman

    8. juni 2020, New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Woke up this morning after a good night's sleep, feeling excited for the kayak trip. We drove to the Abel Tasman Kayaks, only 5 minutes down the road from The Barn. They gave us spray jackets and large dry bags to put all our belongings in. Then we went up a ramp on to the boat on the trailer and they drove us to the beach.

We first went in the boat down the coast. The water was so clear and beautiful surrounded by beautiful golden beaches. We launched off the beach. It was great to be on the water and we were so lucky with the weather. Clear blue sunny skies. We pulled in to a cove because Conny and Kyra were a little slow. Our guide Roy suggested we put are 3 kayaks together while Kyra got on to the guides kayak so they were able to go a bit quicker and there was one guy with us on the tour who went in with Conny. I've forgotten his name. We paddled by some large rocks and could see a few seals bathing. We also spotted a pup!

Next we headed to shag harbour a small inlet. As we paddled in we spotted about 6 seals sat on top of a rock. Some were fighting so we didn't get too close. We then paddled on and came across a nursery of seals. There were so many seal pups jumping in and out of the water splashing near our kayaks and going underneath the kayaks. They got quite close. The seals were very playful and curious. The whole experience was amazing. The guide said we were lucky to see so many as sometimes they swim off. I could of stayed there all day! We enjoyed homemade brownie from our guide while were there.

After this we paddled to a beach for lunch. We bought with us beef salad sandwiches. The guide had coffee for us. We set off after lunch for a paddle to some small caves. We saw a sting ray swimming close by here. We then got picked up by the water taxi to head back.

We did some washing in the evening and had a relaxing night in. We has bbq chicken for tea with mash and veg. We had a G&T and did some more route planning. Now off to bed. Leaving tomorrow to head to Golden Bay.
