    Day One, arrival

    April 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

I arrived at Farnborough to meet Cade at around midday, Thursday 7th April 2022. We had our video consultation for our Covid tests (CDC requirement) booked at 1.40pm. However, the lady called me around 1.10pm to ask if we could go online earlier. Glad i got there earlier as our whole trip hinged on passing this test. With both having to work and go to college all week and Covid being SO rife at the moment, I was nervous. The test was a load of nonsense really.. she asked if we had our kits, checked our passports by holding them up to the camera and then said ok, put it up your nose for 10 seconds and I'll be back in 15 minutes. Then turned her camera off. We looked at each other a bit puzzled and after a minute decided to just do the test, it didn't seem like she was coming back. We could have used any test and any result to be honest. But we did it properly. She came back after 15 minutes, asked to see the strips and then said your certificate has been emailed, could I check my emails. It was as if she sent the certificate before seeing our results. I felt exactly as I did at Christmas with the whole testing thing.. ripped off. At least these weren't £45 each this time and only £20 each. There is zero regulation or verification checks carried out around these tests and I wonder if the USA actually realise that?

We got to Heathrow airport at 4.30am... 4 hours before our flight because of the chaos in the news all week. Despite being told by email to check-in online we were unable to do so after trying for 24 hours. No message on their website about downtime or anything. Just a message sayin "Oops, see someone at the airport". Check-in didn't open till 5.30am so we got a Costa and parked our bums on the floor at the front of the check-in desks. At least we were first in line. Check in was easy, security was easy despite all the news reports. We were through by 6am. Cade checked out the Duty Free shops, all which were open and we had a Leon breakfast box an juice. Our boarding passes said gate B43 and she said gate B43 at checck-in so we toddles off about 7am to the gate.. it was a long way through underground walkways. Got to the gate and checked the screen... flight had changed to gate A26... Note to self.. check screens regardless of what you are told lol. Gate 26 was all the way back past the shops 🙈 so, we walked all the way back with NO electronic walkways going that way.. ugh
The flight with JetBlue was pretty easy, strange to be on a long haul that wasn't overnight but I had downloaded 2 series of The Last Kingdom on Netflix to watch so was happy. We had tablets on the seat in front of us but there was nothing exciting on them. It was nice that we could pair our phones and have WiFi for the trip so i could keep mother informed. (After all day though of not hearing anything from her I phoned after we got out of the airport.. "oh, sorry she said, we've been at the golf club with David all day 🙄).
We could also order a meal on the tablet so I ordered Fritatta, turkey sausage and oranges in Honey for breakfast. Cade ordered something Chocolate (can't remember what) but it was the weirdest taste and texture I have ever seen and really made me LOL seeing his face when he ate it. It was like the texture of an exfoliating body wash and didn't taste like anything chocolate 🤮.
7 hours went quite quickly watching Uhtred ❤️ and then they brought us snacks round. It smelt really sickly sweet whatever it was but turned out to be a pretzel and a sachet of mustard 🤷‍♀️ hot, stale, dry, tasteless bread I have never understood pretzels but... a sachet of mustard? Bonkers... mustard is for sausages. There is not many things I can't eat but I couldn't eat that 🤣.

We arrived at JFK at around 11am.. the views coming in to land of Long island and the Hamptons were stunning and it was a beautiful sunny spring day. Security and customs was smooth and swift and we were through everything in less than an hour. Cade commented on "the US government now having his fingerprints" I guess it is kind of weird having your fingerprints taken for the first time as a kid..
We checked out an Uber and also a new app Clarence recommended called Lyft. A car to the City was around $80 so we decided to save on that and get public transport. Cade also seems fascinated by the NY Subway Tik tok videos and YouTube that he was showing me of "Rat Man" a street performer who dresses up as a rat and wanders the subways.
We easily found the Sky Train by following the signs that took us to Jamaica Station which seems to be a "hub" for then getting to everywhere. A nice chap helped us with the ticket machine. We told him we wanted to get to Penn station. The combined ticket with the Sky train and a days Metrocard was only $13 each, bargain! I do love a bargain. Tried to work out the trains by using Google maps as we knew we wanted the LIRR, Long Island Rail Road but managed to go one stop in the wrong direction. Got off at the next station which was empty and was the first fresh air we had felt in over 12 hours so we enjoyed sitting in the sun for 40 minutes waiting for a train to come back the other way. That was then an easy ride of 40 minutes straight to Penn Station.
Penn station was what I was typically expecting of a New York Subway station so we quickly exited up through a food court where Cade was excited seeing all the typical American brands.. Dunking Donuts, Starbucks, Subway etc.. Next level up and we popped out at Madison Square Gardens which was above us. Clarence met us and we walked a few blocks away from MSG just taking in the sun, the people, the buildings.. Wow.
We saw Times Square 2 blocks away and The Empire State Building and Macys. We stopped at Bryant Park and decided to get an Uber to the Hotel, The Central Park North, as we had to check in between 3pm and 6pm. The Hotel is basic (was the cheapest in the City, other than a hostel that I could find on booking.com), but clean and in a lovely brownstone building very typical of what I was expecting. It is on the north side of central park, literally right next to it. We checked in.. I had the quickest shower with the smallest of towels as I only went in to wash my face but I was feeling so grotty. The room is not en-suite which some people might find strange but it doesn't bother me. There is a separate toilet and then shower cubicle right next to the room.
There is a microwave fridge and sink in the room so we can store stuff and have a cold drink etc. The room is very warm as the sun is blazing through the windows. No air con :-(
I like to sleep in a fridge so this could be a problem. No curtains, just blinds and my goodness it's noisy outside.
Clarence took us straight out for a meal as it was around 4pm by this time.. so, 9pm for us and we hadn't eaten since breakfast. We took an Uber to a Mexican restaurant he had been to before.

    Rancho Tequileria

The food was amazing and had a Margerita on the rocks called a Jamaican with Pomegranate juice and a spicy salt rim, was amazing. Tortillas and guacamole to start with and an awesome fresh salsa. I had chicken fajitas which were to die for. Cade had steak, shrimp and chicken quesedilla and Clarence had enchiladas with green sauce. Great food, great company, great atmosphere. We walked the 10 blocks or so back to our hotel and said goodnight New York... I was finished.
14000 steps today and dead at 6pm.. 11pm for us

  • Day 2

    Central Park and Citibikes

    April 9, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Omg the noise! The room was so hot but I had to close the windows and put ear plugs in. Music from apartments, boomboxes, sirens, voices, horns and a bloody teenager who won't go to sleep. Bit different than the rural Dorset countryside 🤣 eventually got about 8 hours sleep and was awake at 6am (standard).
Cade wanted to compare McDonald's 🤮 so we walked to the nearest one for breakfast which took us through the Northwest corner of central park.
McDonald's sausage and egg mcmuffin was no different than the UK. Cade had the same but instead of the muffin his was pancakes. I think they called it a Griddlescone.
We decided to go to the Empire state building but didn't know how to get there.
An Uber was too expensive.. the bus was too complicated.. the Subway was too daunting.. so we decided to go to Central Park and look at the pedicabs which are similar to a Tuk Tuk that I had seen on an old schoolfriends Facebook Post last week.
On the way back to the park we came across a Citibike stand and they had e-bikes which Cade was keen to try. We worked out that the Lyft app would allow you to take one of the E bikes so I took mine in this way. Cade has no roaming so we tried to download the app for him on my hotspot. This worked but then for confirmation of registration they wanted to send him a text... ugh.. didn't work. We worked out that we could do a $15 unlimited day pass by debit card at the stand. Unlimited 30 minute journeys for 24 hours but not on an E-bike. Just on a regular bike. So.. off we went into the park taking turns on the e-bike.
Holy crap the park is huge! His 30 minutes was soon up so we stopped at the Imagine memorial at Strawberry fields just as it started to pour down. We still had a fair distance to go to The Empire State building so I said "bugger it" and we got an Uber the rest of the way.

    Empire State Building

    April 9, 2022 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

Arrived in the Uber and it was still raining so we dived into Starbucks to check out the Go City app. We had to book online.. damn. Checked out the website which was quite easy to navigate and had 15 minute time slots. Luckily, it wasn't busy and managed to get an 11.30 which was right away. Serious security to enter.. just like the airport and we made our way hough the displays and up to the top.
    Fantastic views and stunning architecture.

    Spyscape Museum

    April 9, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Cades choice of attraction on the Go City app.. hopped on some new Citibikes from Empire State Building and rode North through Times Square to the Spyscape museum.
It was OK, not my kind of thing but definitely Cades. He liked the spy gadgets, the spy games and the Hackers display section. He kept telling me not to rush I'm through each display 🤣
We came out of there and my battery was dying. Using the phone for tracking, navigation, camera and hot spot for Cade was taking its toll. Bought a charger and sat down in an Indian take away place (only place we could find a wall socket) for an hour to charge up. Food was pretty crap but filled a gap and charged my phone up to 50%.
I'm really surprised there isn't charging stations all around like there is in other big Cities. Note to self to bring powerbank out tomorrow.
Got 2 new bikes and rode back south to Madame Tussauds...
I was fading fast now though and it started to rain again :-(

Madame Tussauds.. is it still only Day 2

    April 9, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Ditched the bikes and got into Madame Tussauds without any queueing which I was surprised at as we just turned up and it was busy in Times Square. It was around 5pm by now though and still raining. Tussauds is tussauds and the same the world over but Cade had never been to one and seemed to be enjoying it. There was an 8 minute 4D Marvel movie inside which I think was broken, or at least my chair wasn't working. We were too close to the screen too and it wasn't great to be honest.
When we left Tussauds it started to really rain so we jumped on electric bikes and sped off... it got heavier, we got soaked and it was freezing as we had only gone out in jumpers, no coats. We headed north, back through Time Square and on to the park. Its was bit more sheltered in he park and stopped raining about halfway up. We did the entire East Side of the park from south west corner to North East where we ditched the bikes and walked back to the Hotel. I went back out again the do laundry at Clarences. On the way home I left the clean, dry laundry on the Bus... much to Cades annoyance as it was all his clothes 😱😭 his favourite Fred Perry Jersey.. ugh. Wouldn't even know how to try and find it so I just accepted that it had gone.. he complained.. a LOT
Might call lost property tomorrow if I can find a number or maybe possible to buy new ones and claim on insurance.. Whatever.. only clothes. An excuse to go shopping..

14500 steps and about a 10 mile bike ride today.. some e-bike but not all. I can barely stand up.....

  • Day 3

Statue of liberty, Battery Park, Soho

    April 10, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

Exhausted... 🤣 but on we go... bit of a dampener losing Cades laundry but nevermind. Just ignoring his complaining about having no clothes now muhahahaha... promised him we could go shopping.
We jumped on M3 bus straight down 5th avenue to the tip of Manhatten to use the Go City app for Statue of liberty.
The guided tour details said only on Saturdays.. ugh
Checked out the circle line cruises etc and they didn't start till "spring" which apparently starts on the 15th April. It was the 10th today.. ugh
There were other cruises to do but not from where we had just travelled to.. Battery Park.
It was colder than cold outside, grey skies and the wind was howling.
Exhausted, cold and fed up so today was not going so well.
We left battery park and got into a yellow cab (our first one) and asked to go to the 9/11 memorial. It was very close and only $7 on the meter. We dived into a posh shopping centre (Brookfield place) to work out what to do.
Cade needed clothes but I wasn't buying them here.. only Versace and Louis Vuitton 🤣
Across the road was the 9/11 memorial museum and Observatory but we were all museumed out so we wandered across to the Westfield World shopping centre.
It was brand new and underneath the whole of the world trade centres.
We bought some stuff from Under Armour and H&M and then surfaced to ground level right in the centre and stopped for a "New York Slice" pretty damn fine pizza.
Cade found a couple of shops he wanted to go to so we jumped a bus to Soho.
Soho has every designer name you could possibly wish for and designers we had never heard of.
The shops he wanted to go to were Supreme and Bape 😳😱 if he thinks I'm buying him a $500 hoodie he's got another thing coming lol
A small cushion in Bape was $170.. bonkers.. and I'm happy with a $7 long sleeve from H&M. I have never queued to get into a clothes shop with a doorman in my 46 years but I guess there's a first time for everything!
We were meeting Clarence for dinner and a movie so we left Soho by bus to go the Theatre district. We had dinner in a classic New York style diner and I had an open beef sandwich, mash and green beans. Cade had a good burger.
We went to see Batman at AMC cinema where Cade had a popcorn experience. Giving a teenager a butter machine and a salt pot was not a good idea. The top half of his bucket of popcorn was inedible 🤣 it is a bit crazy as there is no way to mix it in as hey overfill the bucket 🤷‍♀️

New Jersey to collect the hire car

    April 11, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Turo is the app that I used to book the car with. It is like an Airbnb for personal cars. Slightly nervous as it's my first time using it but the guy has good reviews and has answered messages. I am collecting it from a Cafe in Jersey.. Mi Casa.

    https://maps.app.goo.gl/EoaXy625AWqFQLZV6

We packed up and left the Hotel at 10am and bussed it down to the World Trade Centre again as this is where we get the PATH train to Jersey.
We came out at Grove Station and called an Uber to the cafe. The square around Grove Station was lovely looking. Shame we didn't have time to stay for a bit.

We got to the cafe and the food smelt amazing. The guy with the car said he was 2 minutes away. We checked over the car and i had to upload photos to the app. He checked my driving licence and that was it. We were mobile.
I went and got us take away from the cafe.. there was several different types of "stews" Pork, Beef, Chicken, Oxtail, Goat and 4 different types of rice and 2 different types of beans. Chose Beef and Pork and it looked amazing.

Was quite nervous about driving but yolo.. never driven an automatic and on a different side of the road and in a City so big... daunting.
Put the next Airbnb into the Sat Nav and off we went.
I'm not quite sure how the tolls work, I got to the first one and they don't take cards so that was a surprise.. anyway she gave me a ticket and said go online and pay it within 5 days. The rest of the ones we went through said "by mail" so I guess the guy will get those posted to him 🤷‍♀️
We stopped at the first Services and ate our Dominican food. It was nice but I expected spicy.. and it certainly wasn't 🤣

    Next stop Middletown Rhode Island

    April 11, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

It was a four hour drive to the Hotel and wasn't much to see other than motorway.
Atlantic Beach Hotel.. the drive was lovely towards the end.. some great views over Jamestown and going through Portsmouth and Newport.
We had one of the cottages at the hotel and it was very quaint.. Cade called it a shed 🤣
It was right on the beach though.. both sides.
I left Cade setting up his laptop and went for a wander. Found a great little Mexican bar and restaurant with a brewery next door so I had a couple of their beers. Very nice.
Everyone was so friendly. A guy at the bar was telling me all about Newport and said we had to go there so I decided to go the next day.
He highly recommended the Hot lobster rolls too at a place called Benjamins and Cade has been dying to try lobster so it was a definite.

    Newport and Benjamins

    April 12, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Newport is beautiful, very touristy with lots of cute shops and harbour. I would have booked a fishing trip if we had had time.
Benjamins Raw Bar was recommended to me last night and so we went for lunch. It was amazing food. Tuesdays were $1 oysters, topnecks (raw clams) and shrimp. Oysters Rock A Fella and Clams Casino were baked in the oven. Rock A Fella was garlic, spinach and cheese and Casino was herby breadcrumbs. I had mussles and garlic bread and Cade had the hot lobster roll. Amazing food and $65 for the whole meal for 2 of us.. a it pricy for lunch but was a real treat.Read more

    Wareham, Massachusetts

    April 12, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Just had to stop here to take some photos as we live in Wareham in the UK. The fire engines are incredible in the US, very different to home. And the school buses are so very typically American ❤️
