    ZĂŒrich - San JosĂ©, Costa Rica

    We did start our trip around the world, traveling from Zürich to San José, Costa Rica. We used the first day here, to plan the upcoming days and to take a walk around downtown San José.
    We’ve been a bit unlucky due to the fact, that the government shut down almost the whole public life. Museums, shops and restaurants are closed for the whole week. We looking forward to seeing the beautiful nature here in the next few weeks!LĂ€s mer

    Uvita & Drake Bay

    After Manuel Antonio we went to Uvita. A nice little place at the pacific coast of Costa Rica. We spent to nights in a very cute treehouse hostel. Most of the time we were relaxing and planing the upcoming days but we also did an exhausting hike to a view point for the „whale tail“, which is a kind of small island which looks like the tail of a whale when it’s low tide. After that we went to a small waterfall at a river with cristal clear and refreshing water.

    Our next destination has been Drake Bay. A place hard to get to, because it’s at the Osa Peninsula. We had to take the bus from Uvita to Sierpe where a taxi boat is leaving for Drake Bay twice a day.
    After an one hour boat trip we arrived in Drake Bay.
    A very lovely small village.
    We had a nice little bungalow with air condition, which was super nice because the humidity is quite painful 😅
    Drake Bay is also the Gate to Corcovado National Park. The place with the highest bio diversity in Costa Rica. So we made a guided day trip.
    A boat brought us in approximately 1h15min to Serena Ranger Station were we walked through the jungle to see animals and plants.
    We were quite successful. We saw all four species of monkeys who live in Costa Rica, a group of wild boars, macaws, coatis and a lot of different birds.
    On our way back we were accompanied by a pod of dolphins, which was awesome!
    The day after we did a 20km hike along the coast and shot some scenes with the drone.
    We enjoyed Drake Bay a lot and it was also our last stop at the pacific coast.
    Our next destination will be puerto viejo at the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica!    LĂ€s mer

    Drake Bay & Corcovado NP

    Drake Bay is really a special place. You only can get there by boat from Sierpe and it is located at a beautiful beach in the heart of the Osa peninsula. We had a nice little bungalow with a beautiful view over the bay. For the first time since we’ve arrived in Costa Rica, we had air conditioning which we definitely enjoyed a lot. 😋
    Right at our arrival a couple of big red macaws were resting in the garden of our place.
    On our first morning we went by boat to Serena ranger station in the Corcovado National park.
    Corcovado is the place with the highest biodiversity in Costa Rica!
    We saw a lot of wildlife like all four species of monkeys living in Costa Rica, coatis, more macaws and a really big group of wild boars.
    But the most special moment of this day happens at our way back, when we saw a couple of sea turtles and a school of dolphins swimming along our boats.
    Drake Bay is a small and calm place, but you can feel that you’re like really deep into the wild!    LĂ€s mer

    Puerto Viejo & Cahuita

    Caribbean Flair, beautiful beaches and nice Nationalparks. All this you can find in the Area.
    On the day of our arrival we immediately decided to extend our stay. Such a relaxing atmosphere and so much to do.
    We went to the NationalParks/ Reserves Manzanillo and Cahuita, visited a Wildlife rescue center and just hang out at Cocles Beach or enjoying Caribbean food.
    A additional highlight:
    We finally got to meet Jessica & Kenneth from Switzerland, also a traveling couple we followed on FindPenguins for weeks. We had a great dinner with fantastic food! (Tuna „tsch-tsch „) 😉    LĂ€s mer

    Tortuguero

    Tortuguero - Probably our highlight during more than four weeks of Costa Rica.
    We took the bus from Puerto Viejo to Limon and then a taxi to the docks of Moin. After a 3,5h boat ride we finally made it to Tortuguero.
    A very nice village between a canal and the ocean.
    The labyrinth of canals was the reason to come here. On TripAdvisor we found a German biologist offering canoe tours into the jungle. She lives in Tortuguero for more than 25 years now and is an expert for wildlife.
    It was just we and her doing that tour. Three hours we’ve been paddling through the canals while the sun broke through the branches and built a special atmosphere. We saw monkeys, caimans, turtles, birds and lizards.

    The next day we went to a viewing point on sendero Cerro, a small volcano and visited the sea turtle conservancy.    LĂ€s mer

    La Fortuna

    Our last stop in Costa Rica and a must see for every visitor. La Fortuna is next to the volcano and National Park “Arenal”. It’s one of the youngest volcanos in Costa Rica but the most active one.

    We had a amazing time there. Especially because of a group of travelers we met in our hostel. We did a lot of things together and enjoyed our stay. Really appreciate that!
    We went to the hanging bridges, the NationalPark, the free Hotsprings, did a tour at a chocolate farm and took a swim in Rio Fortuna with its rope swing “el salto”.

    We couldn’t wish for a better spot to finish our round trip.

    We took the bus to San Jose to spend one last night in San Jose before going to our next destination 😉

    Miami, US

    The last week we took a little timeout in Miami, Florida. It actually was never the plan to go to the Unites states, till a friend of mine who is living in Miami invited us to stay at his place and so we decided to spent a couple of days there.
    We really enjoyed the benefits of a comfy bed, a washing machine and great hosts.
    We did a classic air boat ride in the Everglades NP, walked along Miami Beach, went shopping and ate in a lot of nice restaurants.
    Now we’re looking forward to our next destination: Mexico! đŸ‘ŒđŸ»đŸ˜Š    LĂ€s mer

    Isla Cozumel

    As soon as we arrived Cancun, we went to Playa del Carmen by bus. A 40 minutes ride with the ferry got us to Isla Cozumel. Cozumel is a famous diving spot and we decided to do our Advanced Open Water Diver course here.
    It took us two days and 5 dives to pass the course. Our specialty dives have been: night diving, underwater navigation, deep diving, drift diving and peak performance buoyancy.
    After our course we had two more fun dives which was amazing. We saw turtles, rays, octopus, lobster, sharks and even more.
    After the exhausting dives we enjoyed the Mexican food.
    We also found a bar where we could watch the German soccer game against Portugal đŸ˜ŠđŸ‘ŒđŸ»
    Our next stop will be Isle Holbox, where I already have been two years ago. I really looking forward to get back there!    LĂ€s mer

    Isla Holbox

    Welcome to paradise.

    I’ve been in Holbox two years ago and I immediately felt in love with this little island.

    I was very excited to come back and especially to show Laura this paradise.
    I didn’t promise to much, she also loved it since the moment we arrived. At the day of our arrival we decided to extend our stay. Five nights instead of three.
    On our first evening we met Jessica and Kenneth again, the couple from Switzerland we had a dinner with in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. They brought a Dutch couple they met at there hotel pool, Jippe and Tom. We had a great evening together with good food, drinks and story’s.
    We booked a kayak tour to the mangroves for the next day. To avoid the hot temperatures and to see the sunset we met our guide at 6am.
    It was just us two and Gustavo the guide. He showed us in more than three hours the canal system of the mangroves. We saw a lot of different birds, a crocodile, flamingos and sting and eagle rays.
    We had again dinner with Tom and Jippe and because we got along so well with the Dutch guys, we almost spent our whole time in Holbox together. We did the escape room “pirates of holbox”, went to the quiz night of our hostel bar, rented some bikes, ate a lot of great food and watched the German Nationalteam playing against Hungary.
    In general we enjoyed Holbox so much and had a fantastic time there.    LĂ€s mer

    Valladolid

    Coincidentally Tom and Jippe also decided to go to Valladolid. So we went together with the bus in this little colonial style village. The colorful houses and the beautiful church right next to the central plaza, shape the nice atmosphere of Valladolid.
    We rented scooter to go to the famous mayan ruins Chichen Itza which are part of the new seven wonders of the world. We were lucky to be there very early so we avoid the crowds arriving in the late morning.
    On our way back we visited a couple of refreshing cenotes, flooded caves with crystal blue water.
    We enjoyed our last evening together in a local taqueria and a rooftop bar with live music.
    We had different destinations coming up, so it was time to say goodbye to Tom and Jippe.
    We loved our time together with this funny and open minded couple. 😊    LĂ€s mer

    Merida

    We used our time in Merida to expand our skillset.
    We took a 5h cooking class we got recommended from Jessica and Kenneth, a swiss couple we found on FindPenguins. It was an amazing experience. We went to the local market with the chef to buy all ingredients we needed. He explained a lot about the yucatecan cuisine and how it’s affected by the history of the region.
    After that we prepared a huge meal with different kinds of regional specialties like poc-chuc, tamales or empanadas. On the same day we took also a salsa class to get a insight of the famous Latin dance. It was pretty exhausting, especially after eating almost the entire day! 😅🙈
    To learn more about Merida we joined a free walking tour which was super nice. We were lucky because after the tour we could visit a performance of a traditional band and dance group at the plaza grande.    LĂ€s mer

    Tulum

    Tulum is not our favorite place in Mexico. A lot of big hotel complexes, a lot of party tourists and high prices. But we made the best out of the time we had. We rented bikes to drive to the Mayan Ruins of Tulum. They are located right next to the sea and they’re well preserved. We also went diving in the cenote „dos ojos“, which was a special experience we won’t forget. We also met Tom and Jippe again after our ways parted. We spent the last night of their vacation together.
    Our next destination will be Bacalar with the famous colorful lake.    LĂ€s mer

    Bacalar

    We used Bacalar as a place to rest a bit and to prepare ourselves for our long overnight bus ride to San Cristobal. Of course we did a sailing trip at the beautiful lake. But the rest of the time was mostly relaxing, eating and do some organizational stuff.LĂ€s mer

    San Cristobal

    What a beautiful place. We are so happy that we changed our plans and had the chance to stay a couple of days in this amazing city. Maybe the most beautiful one we’ve been in México.
    Such an relaxing atmosphere. It’s full of friendly and creative people and also of hidden spots and places for having food & drinks or just hanging out.
    We did again a free walking tour to get a good overview. The tour guide Toni was super nice and took us to his favorite spots.
    One day we participated a tour to Cañón del Sumidero. The cliffs surrounding this canyon are at some spots more than 1000m high. A absolutely impressive tour. We first took a boat ride through the canyon and went afterwards to some amazing view points.
    San cristobal was the perfect ending of our time in Mexico.

    Antigua & Acatenango Part I

    After a almost 20h trip we arrived in Antigua. We had to take a night bus from San Cristobal, Mexico to Tapachula, a taxi then to Talisman, where we crossed the border, a colectivo to Malacatan, a bus to Escuintla and finally the last Chickenbus to Antigua. What an adventure. We saved a lot of money. A private shuttle from San Cristobal to Antigua would have been more than twice expensive.
    In Antigua we relaxed a bit and discovered the beautiful City. We now understand why a lot of people compared Antigua to San Cristobal. The style is kind of the same and the people are also extremely helpful and nice.
    After a few days we did the overnight hiking tour to Volcano Acatenango. What a trip. We were a bit unlucky during our way up. It rained all the time and didn’t stop till the next morning. Means we didn’t see the active volcano Fuego at all. In the Morning the clouds finally moved a bit so we were able to see Fuego for a few minutes and the dark smoke coming out of it.
    It was still an amazing experience and we decided to come back to Antigua and give it another try!
    But for the moment we are planning to go to lake Atitlan to rest a bit and to prepare the upcoming weeks.    LĂ€s mer

    After the first kind of frustrating hiking trip to volcano Acatenango we were searching for a place to rest and relax. We found this place at a AirBnb in San Pedro at Lake Atitlan. We had a room a bathroom and a small kitchen in the house of a young family. A perfect base camp to explore the lake and all the other little villages around it. We had absolutely stunning weather during our stay.

    We went to Jaibalito to eat some Spätzle at Hans’ place (thank you for the recommendation Jule & Marcel 😋). That made us feeling at home for a moment! To find a nice spot for flying the drone we hiked a bit across the hills between Jaibalito and San Marcos.
    The best spot for swimming and jumping into the crystal clear water was at Mirador San Marcos, a little park with beautiful spots to access the lake.
    A trip to the “spiritual” village San Marcos itself is also worthy. Yoga retreat, meditation and massages available at every corner. Not my world but fun to see 😅
    Atitlan and San Pedro gave us everything we we’re looking for. We used the time to plan the upcoming weeks, to take care about all the footage and videos and also to motivate ourselves to give the hike to Acatenango another try 😉🌋    LĂ€s mer

    Antigua & Acatenango Part II

    After resting at the lake we went back to Antigua. The weather forecast was way better then the last time and so we startet highly motivated our second hike to Acatenango Volcano. The hike was super nice but when we arrived the camp, Fuego was hiding behind the clouds. After a hot soup and when it became slowly dark the sky cleared up and we’re able to se Fuego. After a couple of small eruptions it happens: a massive explosion with glowing lava running down to volcano! We truly never seen something like that. We’re so happy that we went up the volcano again. We didn’t want to miss that!!
    The day after we went satisfied back to Antigua. The rest of the time we enjoyed Antigua, did some sightseeing and flew with the drone.
    We found another very special place close by. A little village called “Hobbitenango”. And yes it’s because of the Hobbits out of JRR Tolkien’s books. A couple of friends decided to build up this organic and nature balanced village in the style of the shire, the country of the Hobbits.
    It’s a beautiful place to hang around. Zoe can enjoy the view, buy different kind of handcrafted items or have some food at the terrace.

    And then the day arrived we had to say goodbye to Guatemala. A country which surprised us a lot. Incredible nature, nice villages/ cities and super friendly people. We would have stayed longer but a very specific place is calling us. A destination we dreamed about our whole lives…    LĂ€s mer

    Arrived in Galapagos

    After a long trip from Guatemala City to Quito with a stop over in Panama City we decided to book a hotel close by the airport and don’t spend the 8 hours before the flight to Galapagos there. It was definitely the right decision. The next morning we went early back to the airport and after getting the Galapagos visitor pass we startet. We both were super excited during the trip. After a short in Guayaquil we we’re on our way to Galapagos. Already during landing we recognized the beauty of Galapagos. Turquoise water and black volcanic rocks. With two buses and a boat we finally made it to Puerto Ayora at the main island of Santa Cruz. We’re staying here for four nice in a little hotel/ hostel. It is a very nice place. The family who owns it is super friendly and their helping us with everything you can imagine. We have our own room with bathroom and a huge bed. It’s also very cheap compared to Galapagos prices.
    After check in we went straight to the harbour. Also here incredible colors! Marine inguanas lay at the streets and seals sleeping at the benches.
    For our first day we planned a dive to Gordon’s rock. We saw 7 hammerheads a couple of sea turtles and white tip reef sharks.
    For the upcoming days we try to get a last minute cruise around the islands. We heard right now they’re offering pretty good deals.

    For me a dream is coming true, being on Galapagos. This is such a specific and special place and I’m so excited that we are able to spend 3 weeks in this nature paradise.    LĂ€s mer

    Liveaboard Galapagos - Wolf & Darwin

    We’re back!
    We spent the last 8 days on the Humboldt Explorer. A little Cruise ship for diving cruises at Galapagos.
    We found very spontaneously a last minute deal for this trip. After a sleepless night full of discussions we finally decided to do it. With the daily dive trips your not able to go to the world famous dive spots at Wolf & Darwin Island far in the Northwest of the Archipel.

    What we experienced in this week is simply not explainable. We never were closer in touch with the wild nature and it’s unbelievable how much life you find in this we’ll secured marine reserve.
    We had 18 dives and we’re lucky to see hundred of hammerhead, Galapagos and silky sharks. We also dove with big schools of Dolphins& sea lions.
    An absolute Highlight was the encounter with 4 whale sharks during our dives at Darwin. This breathtaking moment when you face this 15m long creature for the first time!!
    Additionally we were super lucky to spot an orca and schools of pilot whales.

    It’s not possible to discribe this incredible week, which was worth every cent. A experience we’ll never forget in our lives.    LĂ€s mer

    Isla Isabela - Galapagos

    After the diving cruise we went to the island Isabela where we spent 4 days. To be honest we felt a bit tired after the time on the boat and the tons of impressions. So we filled our days with long walks along the beach or to the viewpoint at the „wall of tears“. At a rocky spot at the shore we were lucky to see some Galápagos penguins hunting for their dinner!
    We also couldn’t resist to go back into the water but this time just with snorkeling gear. But as if you would expect from Galapagos it wasn’t „just snorkeling“. Right next to the harbour you can find the beautiful little lagoon Concha de Perla where we found more than 15 little eagle rays, a hawksbill sea turtle and playful sea lions.    LĂ€s mer

    Isla San Cristobal

    The third of the four inhabited Islands of the Galapagos archipelago and our last island during our trip before returning to isla Santa Cruz to fly back to mainland Ecuador.
    You can find sea lions everywhere around Galapagos but the most we found at Isla San Cristobal. It is unreal but fascinating how humans and these actually not harmless creatures coexist. On sundays families spend time together at the beaches and kids playing in the water while the big groups of sea lions are everywhere pretty close. This shows how we can live on this planet and respect it’s nature and creatures.
    We found our most favorite spot for snorkeling: a beautiful bay called Tijeretas. First we watched it from the view points surrounding it during a walk. The day after we rented out snorkeling gear to explore Tijeretas more close. It’s unbelievable how many sea turtles you can find there looking for sea grass to eat between the stones. Also some marine iguanas took a bath and tried to catch some food but the curious sea lions were annoying them by biting in their tails. One of the sea lions was up for playing with us. He came right to our faces just to swim away acrobatically in the very last moment. We really appreciated the opportunity to get so close to these amazing animals. On the last day we were hiking to playa Loberia and the cliffs close by where you can watch different sea birds breading and big waves breaking into the rocks. Again we were super lucky to witness a humpback whale in the ocean jumping. An amazing last goodbye from these very special Islands.
    We went back with the ferry to Santa Cruz Island where we have our last two nights before heading to Quito.

    The three weeks at Galapagos and especially the diving cruise have been definitely the highlight during our trip and an “once in a lifetime” experience.    LĂ€s mer
