    Day one

    7–10 nov. 2024, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Ah, Waihi Beach! There’s just something special about this spot, and every time we come here, it’s like stepping into a slice of paradise. This time, we’re making it extra memorable by camping out at the Coombridge family bach. It’s the perfect blend of cozy vintage charm and sweeping ocean views, and it’s got just the right amount of space for our whole crew. The bach is two levels of old-school kiwi magic, and the big front yard is ideal for all of us with motorhomes and caravans – everyone’s got a spot with room to breathe.

We arrived this afternoon, six of us, with the rest of the gang rolling in tomorrow. It didn’t take long for the evening to turn into a cozy catch-up session. Stories and laughs filled the air as we all shared what’s been happening in our lives, savoring that easy rhythm that family gatherings bring. And it wasn’t just us making the most of this amazing spot – our two dogs were in absolute heaven, racing around the yard and sniffing out every corner, happy to be part of the fun.

With that gentle ocean breeze and the sound of waves in the background, it’s been an unforgettable first evening. We can’t wait for the rest of the crew to get here and really get this weekend rolling.

  • Day 2

    8 de noviembre de 2024, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Woke up to a beautiful sunny morning, with just the perfect breeze! After a delicious breakfast, we only had to wander a few steps (30 meters, to be exact) to reach the beach. Carol and I enjoyed a lovely walk along the shore, stopping here and there to collect scallop shells for her grandson, Jax.

Later, Neil and I hopped on our bikes and rode into town, where we met Carol and Malcolm for a relaxing coffee. The boys headed back by car, while Carol and I stayed to do a bit of shopping—yes, we treated ourselves! With bags in hand and big smiles, we biked back home, feeling quite accomplished in our little shopping adventure.

Sadly, the afternoon took a turn as clouds rolled in and rain started to fall. We made the best of it, cozying up indoors and watching the raindrops dance outside.

Then, just as quickly as it came, the rain cleared, and the sun was back! We set ourselves up outside, soaking in the late-day rays with a classic fish and chips dinner. A few "drinkies" later, after a day of sunshine, shopping, and shell-hunting, I was ready for bed—content and happily tired!

  • Day 3

    9 de noviembre de 2024, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Our day began with a classic wake-up call from the dogs at dawn! They decided it was the perfect time for a bathroom break, so we let them out. Of course, just as we opened the door, Julie happened to be coming out of the downstairs level, triggering an enthusiastic volley of barking. Sorry, everyone! Good morning!

The morning unfolded into a bright, beautiful day, with the sound of waves crashing on the beach adding the perfect backdrop to our huge, hearty breakfast. Nothing kicks off a day at the coast like a full spread, and we enjoyed every bite.

Later, we followed our reunion tradition with a big family walk. We piled into cars and headed to the surf club, then started our trek over the hill toward Orokawa Bay. The well-worn path had its fair share of tree roots and uneven ground, so we had to keep an eye on our footing. But the scenery made every step worth it; we were surrounded by native greenery—ferns, manuka bushes, toetoe, and more. It was a workout for the legs and glutes, that’s for sure!

At the end of our hike, we were rewarded with the sight of an expansive sandy beach and rugged waves crashing onshore. The dogs were in heaven, racing in and out of the surf with pure joy.

In the first part of the afternoon, we all took some time to unwind in our own ways. I went back to the beach with the dogs for a slower-paced stroll along the shore. As the tide went out, it left a cool, shallow channel of water, perfect for wading in. We wandered along, with me on the lookout for scallop shells while the dogs happily splashed by my side.
For the past 8 years the Turner siblings and their partners have celebrated the cherished memory of Brent, the seventh of eight siblings, with the annual Brent Turner Memorial Cup. This spirited competition, dedicated to Brent, who passed away in 2014 from cancer at age 53, has been a way to honour a much-loved brother and Janice’s devoted husband. Each year, the winner takes on the fun task of planning the next event, and this time, Julie took full advantage of our seaside setting. She challenged each couple to create a three-tiered "birthday cake" out of sand, using whatever items we could scavenge from the beach. Neil and I built a whimsical cruise ship cake, complete with portholes, a second-tier swimming pool, and a topper crafted from local beach flora. We were thrilled to come in third! Carol and Malcolm claimed a well-deserved first place with their beautifully decorated, Kiwiana-themed cake. Although this marks the final challenge, we're sure the family reunions will continue in the same joyful spirit.

As the evening drew in, I called it an early night, seeking some quiet time to curl up with a good book. A perfect end to a lively day!

  • Day 4

    10 de noviembre de 2024, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

This morning, we waved goodbye to four of our family members before settling in with coffees in our camping chairs. The dogs were just as content, happily gnawing on their cow hooves on the grass (yum!). Those of us still around decided to take a scenic drive into Bowentown. The views from the hill were breathtaking, and down at Anzac Cove, Neil kept the dogs entertained with endless sticks, and they enjoyed a refreshing swim. The water looked so inviting that we wished we'd brought the kayak along! We popped over to the Bowentown Holiday Camp and stopped at the little cafe for another coffee. The holiday park looks fantastic – we’re definitely making plans to stay here in February 2026 when Carol and Malc visit with their boat! On the way home after lunch, Neil and I couldn’t help reminiscing about the amazing weekend with family. I feel so blessed to be part of this incredible clan!Leer más

  • Boxing day

    26 de diciembre de 2024, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

The day started out with beautiful sunshine after a night of torrential rain, but it wasn’t long before dark clouds rolled in again. Some of our neighbours’ tents collapsed, and we spent time drying soggy chairs and gear. Once the rain cleared, we took the dogs for a bike ride—Diesel ran freely beside us, while Marley, the loose cannon, had to stay on a lead. Near the campsite, Marley pulled Neil off his bike, but thankfully, he was okay, though the bike taillight got smashed. Just five minutes after returning, the rain hit again, so we enjoyed some quiet time with our books before heading out for three rounds of mini golf, which was a blast. Later, a fierce storm with thunder, lightning, and hail rolled in, making us feel for those still in tents!Leer más

  • Waihopuhopu (Kaiaua)

    27–28 dic. 2024, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

We sadly left our spot for the POP site about 18km away and stopped at Kaiaua for brunch. The POP site had been a delightful surprise – we parked in an orchard near a mandarin grove, just 100m from the Firth of Thames. The dogs had plenty of room to run; Diesel is mostly trusted off-lead, while Marley is still learning and stays tethered. Cousin Natalie and Steve came from Auckland with a lovely picnic lunch, and soon Jude and Barney joined us. We spent a few hours at the Kaiaua pub enjoying drinks and good conversation. Later, we all relaxed at camp with a steak and salad dinner.Leer más

  • Waihopuhopu day 2

    28 de diciembre de 2024, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We woke to a gorgeous sunny cloudless day. Took Diesel and Marley over to the beach and they swam and frolicked in the water. Unfortunately it was a little too windy to send Barney's fishing drone out, so we sat on our chairs and enjoyed the rest.
After a very lazy couple of hours, Neil decided that the water was calm enough to take out the kayak. The dogs got their life jackets on and we went down to the beach. Diesel is an old hand at kayaking, but this was Marley's first time. She did so well! The water was gorgeous so we all had a swim after.
This POP site is wonderful. We will definitely come back!

  • Omana Regional Park/Bombay

    29–30 dic. 2024, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Another beautiful morning! Jude and Barney cooked us a beautiful breakfast and then we all packed up to leave.
We meandered our way up the coast until we got to Kawakawa Bay. This area holds special memories for me as my Grandpa lived here and we had many holidays and adventures there.
We let the dogs have a run and swim, then crossed the road and had a coffee at the little cafe/giftshop.
Driving into Maraetai, we were surprised to see how busy it was. The first freedom camp was full of cars, so we went to the next site at Omana and managed to get a good spot with some grass for the dogs. It wasn't long before we realised that dogs are completely prohibited, so we packed up and arranged a night at a powered pop site in the Bombays (Moya Lodge).
What a gorgeous site! $20 a night with power and water and freedom to wander the whole grounds! Marley and Diesel loved the creek, getting themselves very wet and muddy. They weren't sure what to make of the Sulphur crested cokatoo who kept calling out "hello". A horse also has the run of the grounds too. Marley kept barking at the poor thing.
I finally got a full hot shower. Our gas hot water striker isn't working for some reason, so sponge baths have become the norm this week.

  • Pukekohe/Mercer

    30 de diciembre de 2024, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

We had a lovely sleep in. Marley jumped on our bed in the wee hours of the morning, but didn't ask for breakfast until about 7.10! Yes, a sleep in! After breakfast we packed up and drove into Pukekohe. I showed Neil my old primary school and we drove down our old street. To my surprise, the house I grew up in is for sale! Was great seeing some pictures of all the improvements made to it over the last 40 odd years.
We had stacks of laundry and I was down to my last pair of undies, so off to the laundromat. $24 for wash and dry. We walked around the town cave for a bit. I showed Neil where my Dad's last florist shop used to be and pointed out some of the businesses that are still there even after all these years.
We decided to drive a few km's down to Mercer, as there is a freedom camping spot by the Waikato River. We snagged a spot just beside a wee little cove, where the dogs enjoyed a swim. We took advantage of the large areas of grass to let the dogs have a good run around. Marley, Diesel and I even explored around the yard of an old abandoned house, where Diesel got to chase a rabbit. The site was OK, but we were very disappointed in how much rubbish was around. Surprisingly, not as much road noise as we expected.

  • Mangatarata- Woodturner's cafe

    31 dic.–1 ene. 2025, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Most of us have driven post this cafe on the way to or from Auckland. Just out of Ngatea, it boasts a large cafe with coffee and food as well as homemade condiments and other gifts. The large outside area has a playground for children and a fenced off area for dogs. We were able to park right beside the dog area and had access to power from a utility shed.
I had a woopsie when I was standing in the MH doorway watching Neil with the dogs. I turned around to get my phone to take photos, and as I stepped up, I clocked the top of my head on the doorframe. My vision went black, and then I literally saw stars! Ouch!!! No bleeding, but a nice big bruised bump. I was quick to find and install the pool noodle we normally have on this door frame. Lesson learned.
We all had a bit of a snooze after brunch. I figured if we were to stay up to see in the new year, then we had better get in some zzz's prior.
On the whole, a very quiet New Years Eve watching TVNZ+ (we signed up to Wireless Nation so we can have internet everywhere we go!) We managed to stay awake until midnight, wished each other a happy new year and went to sleep.

  • Te Aroha

    1 de enero, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

We were looking forward to our friend Jude coming over to spend the day and night with us, so we packed up quick and headed towards Te Aroha. Initially we had planned to stay at the NZMCA site as it has a dog park next door. However we realised that as Jude isn't a member, we wouldn't be able to. I found a lovely POP site just 8 km's out of Te Aroha called Rustic Rabbit. A lovely flat site nestled in a row of pine trees and a handful of fruit trees. We were met by the lovely owners Craig and Jenny with their 4 month old Jack Russell puppy Maggie. The site is a working organic dairy farm, with sheep, chickens and pigs a well as the cattle. We got to watch the milking, and even participated!
In the evening we lit the firepit, and Craig and Jenny came out and joined us. We had a lovely evening getting to know each other! Marley and Maggie had the time of their lives, running and chasing each other around the fruit trees.
We went to bed feeling like we had one of the best nights of the trip. Jude slept in the Luton and Marley kept her company all night!
Unfortunately during the night I felt a bit off, so I went outside to get some fresh air and managed to wake both Neil and Jude as I wasn't able to get far enough away from the motorhome before I was horribly ill. I woke later on in the morning with a migraine, so we decided to come home day early.
This POP site is now one of our favourites and we are planning to go back Waitangi weekend!
