    Iz geits los, how exciting is that! My dearest cousine quickly cut my pony at 5:30am (so they can't grab me by it and I have a clear view) and brought us to the train station. My mum and and my best friend Sophie accompanied me to the airport and Sophie gave me that hand-made, beautiful, personalized journal. All in all, what a lucky girl I am!Weiterlesen

    Tokyo und Wiedersehen Nr.1

    Nach zwei interessanten Flügen mit tollen Gesprächen bin ich in Tokyo gelandet bei wunderbarem Wetter. Ich habe den Zug nach Nippori-Station genommen, wo Etsuko schon auf mich gewartet hat, so schön! Nachdem ein kleines Ticketproblem mithilfe eines freundlichen Herrn gelöst war (ich kam mir schon auffallend vor mit grossen Rucksack und ich sowieso grösser als viele, dann hab ich noch das Ticket am falschen Ort reingesteckt, sodass der Arme noch den Schlüssel holen musste...etwas peinlich) kamen wir im Apartment von Etsuko an. In der letzten Stunde konnte ich dank Etsukos Hilfe meinen Trip nach Niijima buchen. Da aktuell off-season ist, spricht kaum jemand Englisch und da wollten sie mich nicht. Zum Glück fand sich eine ehemalige Englischlehrerin, welche ein B&B führt und mich aufnimmt.     Yokohama

    What a day yesterday! I slept for 12h straight, had a delicious breakfast made by Etsuko and then we headed to town. Etsuko had a meeting so I explored this city by foot, starting in Akasaka, walking next to the parliament, where a lot was going on because the minister was expected to defend himself because of a scandal. So I talked to some Japanese with a megaphone and asked what was going on and to some French journalists, very interesting. Then I continued to the emperial palace, walked through Ginza and met Etsuka and her friend for dinner. I am in food heaven here with all the fish, fresh food and soups. After that we had a karaokesession, that was very funny. Today I meet a couple which were once customers at the Vomfass in Murten. That was ca. 2009, I hope we will find each other!Weiterlesen

    Wiedersehen Nr. 2

    We found each other easily. They suggested to spend the day in Kamakura. So we took the train and went to see different shrines and temples as well as a big buddha. We had a delicious lunch in a traditional japanese restaurant. I was again in food heaven. The language we had during our conversation was a mix of English, German, French and Italian. He is a Professor in European History of Economics and lived in Amsterdam and Torino in the late sixties and seventies. Actually we figured out that we met in 2007. He then just finished the pilgrim to Santiago de Compostela. What a lovely couple they are, I am grateful and humbled that I was able to spend some time with them. Now I will head home and hopefully find the flat of Etsuko, since I will be on my own tonight before heading to Osaka tomorrow. I'm already in love with this country and the people living in.Weiterlesen

    'wow-ed'

    I am lost for words, I am having such a good time thanks to Etsuko. Yesterday I took the train to Osaka, where I met Etsuko again, then we ate some 551 hourai, then continued to Kyoto, where we met Masumi, a student friend of her. Lovely woman, same age as me, we had a blast. We visited some temples, had Maccha tea, lot's of good conversations and laughs. A childhood friend of Etsuko drove us to her home, we had some delicious dinner (Takoyaki) somewhere at a resting area. In Kasai I met her mom, a wonderful woman. We communicated with hands and feet and somehow ended dancing vals. Today I met her father and the grandmother. What a lovely family they are. Now we are on the way to the castle in Himeji.Weiterlesen

    Not the only tourist here

    So yesterday I visited Hijemi castle with Etsuko and her parents. It was very crowded since it is the nice season with the cherryblossom. They haven't been blooming yet, they will soon show their pinkness. We couldn't visit the inner part of the castle because I had a train to catch to Hiroshima. After some Sushi I took another Shinkansen to this city and headed to the Memorial Mueseum. I've never been in a Museum with so many people. That was crazy. Nevertheless it left some impressions on me. Difficult to imagine that such a man made catastrophe really happened and all this hurt and pain it left behind. Very sad. And we still do not learn from it.
    After this how-it-feels-to-be-a-sardine-experience I took a walk to Hiroshima Castle and then took the Shinkansen to Osaka. In the train I met a Southafrican couple, we had a nice chat so the train ride was over quickly. I changed train in Osaka and headed back to Tokyo which feels kind of home already.    Weiterlesen

    Rain for the first time

    Today it's pouring and very cold. Not bad so I can slow down a little after all this impressions. The couple from the train yesterday recommended to visit Akihabara with all these amine and the to Shinjiku, what I did. The amine thing and all those gambling halls are a little bit crazy, I didn't stay long and went to Shinjuku. I am lucky not to be shopping-addicted because here it's shopping paradise. As food interests me waaaaay more I somehow landed in an all you can eat restaurant, where I am sitting at the moment. The desserts are funny looking, in pastel colors, mostly pink and very sweet. Oh and I have to go to the loo now, which I love because of the heated toiletseats 😊Weiterlesen

    Niijima

    My journey to Niijima began already when I arrived here with the non-japanese-speaking state of mine mentioned before. So I was very excited to see if everything had worked out. It did and how it did. It's a little paradise here.
    The ferry ride was quick, I slept on the floor with many others and quite rested I woke up at 5:30. Arriving time in Niijima was 8:30 and I re-met Maria, a girl from Moscow, spending a week on Niijima with friends to surf. She was the other not Asian person on the ship. The lady of the B&B picked me up from the pier and after quickly taking my room I started the first part of my walk up to Mt. Miyatsuka, the highest point of the island. It was just me and and it was beautiful.
    After some lunch and a nap I went up the other side, breathtaking. We could see the coast line, Mt. Fuji was hidden behind clouds. There were two men up there with me, here on Niijima for business. One of them is a 'island expert' and told me the name of even the smallest island we could see. Then I headed to the Onsen, hot springs. After more then 20km of walking on that beautiful island that was just heaven, the tüpfli ufem i. I soaked in there until the stars appeared and a bit longer.     Back in Tokyo

    I had to catch the boat back to Tokyo at noon. Mes, my host, brought me to the pier and she told me, that she came to the island more than 30 years ago because of her husband, who was born here. He died three years ago. They have three kids, two sons and a daughter. No grandkids yet, she told me her sons enjoy the easy way of life. She was born on Kyushu Island, lived for 4 years in Tokyo. Her mum was US-American but didn't speak English with her but they celebrated Christmas and Easter. Besides running the B&B, she works at the tourist information center.
    The boat trip was beautiful, I was mostly sitting in the sun, reading a book, eating icecream, chatting with people and enjoying life. We arrived in Tokyo after a stunning sunset and a friendly, elderly Japanese explained the different biuldings of the skyline to me. He told me that he had been in Grindelwald two years ago. Then he took his IPad, started googlemaps and wanted to know where I come from. Und schwupps, so schnäu isch me ume ds Murte 😊    Weiterlesen

    Byebye Japan

    1. April 2017 in China ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

    Zwischenlandung in Guangzhou, irgendwo in China, trinke einen Kaffee und fülle schon langsam mein Reisetagebuch. Der letzte Tag gestern in Tokyo war wieder super: Ich bin in Nippori ausgestiegen, bin durch den Friedhof von Yanaka spaziert (diese Hölzer, welche man auf dem Foto sieht, sind übrigens meistens aus deutscher Weisstanne), dann weiter in den Uenopark. Da war ja was los. Es duftete von überall wild durcheinander, alle priesen an und ich wollte am liebsten von allem probieren, ging leider nicht. Aber das was ich gegessen habe, war super, fragt mich einfach nicht, was es war (passierte übrigens häufiger hier, war aber alles lecker). Dann gings weiter über Akihabara und Kanda zur Tokyo Station, wo ich dann bei Beginn des Regens im Trockenen einen Kaffee getrunken habe und einfach die Zeit habe verstreichen lassen. Was für ein Luxus.
    Ich hatte Rendezvous mit Chica, einer Freundin von Etsuko zum Essen. Wir sind in den 38.Stock und haben mit Sicht auf die Lichter Tokios Okonomiyaki ghaberlet. Danach gabs noch einen Spaziergang durch eine Alleee mit Kirschbäumen in Blüte. Wirklich eine schöne Sache, diese cherryblossom.
    Heute Morgen habe ich Miso-Suppe nach der genauen Anleitung Etsukos gekocht und noch eine Spezialität probiert, Natto, ebenfalls sehr fein.
    Und dann hiess es schon Abschied nehmen von diesem wunderbaren Land, dessen Einblick mir Etsuko auf eine so tolle und nahe Art ermöglicht hat. Ich komme wieder!    Weiterlesen

    Hello Perth und Wiedersehen Nr. 3

    2. April 2017 in Australien ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

    The flight to Perth was entertaining and very interesting thanks to Angie, a Professor from Florida. We somehow ended talking until 2am in the morning, then sleep was stronger then me, I passed out some but the conversation continued from 4.30am on. I really hope to see her again, maybe in July when I am in the US.
    Perth greeted me with sunshine and warm temperature. The very friendly Uberdriver tried to talk me into settling down as a doctor in Australia and also recommended to find a partner as soon as possible for very important evening hugs. "Then the day just ends a little bit better."
    He drove me to Fremantle where Olimpia lives. I met her in the Piscine in Neuchâtel where I was her coach for some time. That was more then ten years ago. She married Tom, an Australian and it was just wonderful to see her again! I met also Lea, her five month old daughter, my cuddling partner for the next days. We had breakfast and then went to King's Park where Tom met some former students. The park is huge with incredible playgrounds for kids. As a so-called adult you're really tempted to just try them out. I probably will on my next visit. After some lunch we watched Footy. Rough sport with guys dressed like in the Seventies. The ones from Fremantle are not doing well. They lost, we do not mention the score here. Next Saturday I will be able to watch a game at the Stadium, how cool is that!
    Two times a year a crossing from Fremantle to Rottnest Island takes place. You can do it as a team or by yourself. Which Olimpia already did a couple of years ago. To be clear, it's 20km openwater swimming. Yes. Swimming. So tonight they had a meeting, respectively a BBQ at the house of one of the team mates to watch some pictures of the last crossing. I met great people, all tanned, fit, sporty, funny just giving me a perfect first night in Australia.    Weiterlesen

    The Australian way of life

    After a morning run I had a coffee with Olimpia and a morning cuddle with Lea. That was a very good start. And it continued that way: I spent the day on a boat with Oli, Lea, Sarah, Troy, their three weeks old son Rory as well as his grandparents cruising on Swan river. We had a delicious lunch on the water, a refreshing bath in the water, lot's of sun and good conversations.
    I am going from one wonderful place to another and experiencing so much kindness everywhere. I am bit dazzled. In a very good way.    Weiterlesen

    King's Park and Wiedersehen Nr.4

    Sun, fun and nothing to do. That's my life at the moment. And I enjoy it so much. After another morning run Oli, Lea and me went to the beach and had a morning swim in the ocean. They put a 'fence' of 300x75m in the sea to build a sort of sheltered area for save, shark-free swimming. After that Oli dropped me off at the trainstation. I went to King's Park again. It's beautiful and you can learn a lot since there are different sectors with themes. I asked Angie, the cool lady from the plane, if she had time for a coffee this afternoon. She had, we met at the convention centre. She put her badge around my neck and 'smuggled' me into the centre. Then she got me gadgets from Yahoo, Google and co. (it's a www-conference) and I got free coffee, biscuits and fruit. It was so funny. Then we went for a walk through Perth and it was great to spend some time with her. I had rdv with Oli, Tom and Lea in Fremantle at 6 for Nacho-Night. That was delicious. We planned a bit more my journey, they will take me to Tom's uncle farm up in the North, this is awesome.Weiterlesen

    Holiday

    Spending time with Oli and Lea is wonderful, I could seriously get used to that. I had to babysit Lea for an hour, I mean, had to is the wrong expression, I loved it, she is such a sweet girl and we get along very well. Over an another coffee in Freo, short for Fremantle, Olimpia told me about a walk from 'cape to cape' in the south. A 150km walk on beaches with stunning views, wandering through forests with huge trees. That sounded awesome and of course I was very enthusiastic about it. Since it's Easter holiday and everything is booked out it will not be for me this time. But in case you plan a trip here, that's a thing to do.Weiterlesen

    In prison

    In mid 19th century roughly 5000 Europeans were settled in Western Australia. Not enough hands to build streets and other infrastructures, so what did the government? Yes, they asked Homeland Britain to send them some prisoners. They were convicted for minor crimes like stealing food for their starving families and then sent overseas with a 10 year sentence. When they arrived in Freo, then called Swan River colony, they first had to build their own prison. The living conditions were horrendous, the cells being 1x2m small, in summer it heated up until 55 degrees and they were isolated. So when they were released, they underwent 6 month of resocialization in a big room with other men. Probably the most human act those prisoners got in there before leaving. Since water was rare the convicted had to dig a tunnel system to ensure clean water. That was around 1900. The prison was closed 1991. It is a museum since. So today I visited this historic place where Oli is working as a curator. I did a tour through the prison and later on I went into the tunnel. We were a small group of seven with our guide Tristan. He was my boat buddy and my highlight. I had such a good time, Tristan telling us one bad joke after another (How is a earthquake called here? A Perthquake. What does the Swiss drive mostly? Neutral).
    After that I took a long walk home. I can stay in an apartment next to the house of Oli and Tom and at the moment it smells yummy because I have a Züpfe in the oven for breakfast.    Weiterlesen

    FOOTY!

    Yesterday evening Tom, me and some 28'800 others watched the game dockers against bulldogs at the stadium. You may remember from last week, the team not starting the season well after being ripped apart the first two matches and this after winning only 4 out of 22 games last year. So the expectations were rather low. But then, always expect the unexpected! What a game that was! We smashed them! Yes! We won! The crowd went mad, it was wonderful.

    That was a perfect night after another gorgeous day here in Fremantle. Oli and Tom took me with them for a swim workout with their team. Little Lea was taken care of at the Crèche from the Leisure centre. How cool is that?
    After an hour swim in a 50m pool under the sun we had Tom's pancakes for breakfast with some teammates. Later in the afternoon we visited an aboriginal art market at the art centre in Freo. Very interesting and wonderful paintings. The family goes on Rottnest Island today until Thursday, I will go to the zoo today, to Rottnest tomorrow to see some Quokkas. Tuesday till Thursday I will indeed go south and do at least two etappes of the cape to cape walk, looking forward to that!    Weiterlesen

    Rottnest

    Eigentlich stand gestern der Zoobesuch auf dem Programm. Dann hatte ich die tolle Idee, von Fremantle zum Zoo zu laufen. Alles den Swanriver hoch. 25km. Ich und meine Ideen. Dafür waren es wunderschöne Kilometer entlang des Wassers, die Skyline von Perth immer wieder im Blickfeld, dazu das neue Album von Troubas Kater in den Ohren, sehr empfehlenswert. Als ich dann beim Zoo ankam, war's 17:00Uhr, Zoo zu, also habe den Zug und Bus retour genommen. Soviel zu gestern. Heute bin ich um 5:30 aufgestanden, um die Fähre nach Rottnest zu erwischen. Dort leben die bekannten Quokkas, Kurzschwanzkänguruhs (merci Minuche), welche nur auf dieser Insel zu finden sind. Ich hatte Angst, dass ich keine sehen würde, doch sie sind überall und sooooo schnuslig! Ich habe ein Velo gemietet und die Insel so entdeckt. Wunderschöne Strände, ganz alleine für mich und jedesmal musste ich ins Wasser. Bei eher frischen 18Grad kam ich immer etwas blauer wieder raus. Doch es lohnte sich bei so vielen schönen Korallen und Fischen. Fahrradfahren war etwas tricky da links, mein Velo eine grosse Acht hatte und eher instabil. Ich hatte das Gefühl, wenn ich die Bremse etwas betätige, dass ich so das ganze stabilisiere. Nicht ganz so gäbig, Bremsen beim Fahren. Egal. Ich habe sie trotzdem alle beim Hochfahren überholt.     Dolphins!

    I traveled from Oli's place down to Dunsborough (Donsbra). There my host Therese picked me up from the busstation, what a nice suprise.Today Roger, Therese's husband drove me to the Cape Naturaliste where the walk begins. I started by going around it - and suddenly something big came out of the bush. I was quite startled. So what is jumping around?In Australia? Yep, a Kangaroo! A very big one. He was friendly though (not like the male sheep in Switzerland) and jumped back in the bush.
    The landscape was beautiful, the weather changing from sunny and hot to rainy and windy in a half hour range. I was well equipped and I didn't mind at all. As I arrived at Yallingup beach and looked at those big waves I finally saw them: Dolphins! My first ones! They had much fun jumping in the waves ashore and me, too. That was magical. I went into the water a bit later, those waves have so much strength, very impressive. After that I was not in the mood for another 1.5h walk along the mainroad to Dunsborough, so I asked around for a ride and a nice girl took me back. She just finished a 6 months travel around Europe. Tomorrow I will go back to Freo, then Saturday we will go to Hyden. Hiding. Since Easter is coming on.    Weiterlesen

    Some signs

    I came back from Dunsborough after a lazy day on the beach and a cup of tea with Roger. I was very happy to see Oli, Tom and Lea again, we had dinner together and I could load my cuddle batteries with Lea.
    During my travel i came across some signs. I think my favorite is the one with the golfers. My dad agrees fully with this sign and said that golfers are a species to be protected.    Weiterlesen

    Freo

    Yesterday we visited the Buskers Festival in Freo. Good music, absurd and funny artists, good weather and my first fish'n'chips, wonderful. Now we will have another workout in the pool before heading 350km into the outback to Hyden. Happy Easter to you all!Weiterlesen

    On the road

    We drove up to Hyden and made a first stop in York, one of the first settlements in Western Australia. We quickly visited a Galary where another uncle of Tom had some pictures in exhibition. We arrived at Hyden around 4pm in the afternoon. So I thought the farm was in Hyden. We past the 'town' of Hyden and drove and drove and drove. Oli and Tom were discussing after which turn the farm could be. Everything looked pretty the same to me though. Suddenly Tom said, i think it's over there and indeed, we arrived. The farmhouse was built by Melinda and Mark. They have three kids, Belle, the youngest, will soon travel through Europe before going to Canada for a year or two. Melinda and Mark will come to Switzerland in July. And I was like, me, too, when do you arrive? They will land in Zurich 20min after me. Same date. What a coincidence.Weiterlesen

    Hyden

    16. April 2017 in Australien ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

    We visited Waverock, had a walk and wondered how this rock just got there. Mark, Tom and me went to one of the ponds to get some yabbies. I had no idea what I was gonna catch. You can see them on one of the pictures and they are yummie!
    We returned to the farm and the house was filling up with people, coming in by car and of course, this is Australia, by plane. I can't remember all the people i met, they were all related with Tom and all of them very nice and welcoming! Anna, which grew up in Little Italy (they call the land of the family like that because her grandma is Italian) is a ER doctor and has a huge area to cover. We had a nice chat even if we tried hard not to talk about work. We ended up compairing our system and their flaws and figured out that we were on the same page. In the evening Chris, Melindas Dad drove us around the farm to see some Roos ("Kangoroos is too long a name for those bloody animals") which was a lot of fun. That was a really nice way to spend Easter Sunday.    Weiterlesen

    Goodbye Western Australia

    The farm in Hyden is huge: 20000 acres of land where they grow lupins, canola, wheat and barley. They also have 4000 sheep. Not many farmers have sheep anymore because they are a lot of work. Since everything is so spread the kids go to boarding school to Perth from the age of 12. Here they do not home schooling, a bus brings them to the school in Hyden.
    If they need medical advice they go to town and there is a nurse. If she thinks they need a doctor they put him/her on vidocall and then they decide if hospital, an ambulance or the plane is needed. I was very impressed by this way of life and especially by Mark and Melinda. I am very looking forward to see them again in Switzerland!
    Tonight it's my goodbyes to Oli, Tom and Lea since I am flying out to Sydney tomorrow morning. I am very sad to leave them after spending such a good time with them. I will miss you!    Weiterlesen

    Wiedersehen Nr. 5

    Why not flying spontaneously four hours to meet your oldest childhood friend? I don't think I would do that in Europe, but in Australia, of course! That was just a wonderful catching up going from coffee to Apéro to diner. We couldn't believe being together here in Sydney. It felt so good and the best thing, spending another day with Fabienne and Marc tomorrow!Weiterlesen
