When we got back to Lisbon thankfully the sun had come out.
I started wandering and came across an old funicular. Whilst waiting for it to move I watched a whole lot of people coming gingerly down the steep street with trolley bags.
The Elevador da Glória is one of the three funiculars in Lisbon. Elevador da Glória links Praça dos Restauradores to Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara. It lets you turn a steep climb into a relaxing two minute ride and was opened in 1885 as the second of its kind in the city. It was only electrified in 1915.
Afterwards I revisited the Pasteis de Nata shop to taste a couple of them. Delicious 😋Читать далее

From Sintra we go up a twisty road through a forest to Pena Palace which was in the clouds. Because we were only six in a mini van we managed to get in before the rain got heavy. Later ones got absolutely soaked.
Beautiful rooms inside King Ferdinands palace, he was more or less the last king of Portugal. His son reigned for two years after the kings suspicious death, but he was only seven, before Portugal became a republic.
There are extensive gardens, but because of the torrential rain, we skipped touring them.Читать далее

On my second day in Lisbon I decide to do a day trip to Sintra, 45 minutes west of Lisbon. Unfortunately the weather broke. Low cloud, rain and wind.
Sintra is a charming Portuguese town situated within the cooling hills of the Serra de Sintra. Hidden among its majestic pine forest, you will discover whimsical palaces, extravagant villas and the ruins of a 10th-century Moorish castle.
We arrive in Sintra and stroll around the charming village and the Palácio Nacional de Sintra, the original medieval palace of Sintra, which was a favourite with the early Portuguese rulers.
Located in the centre of Sintra, it has an unmistakeable silhouette formed by its two conical chimneys crowning the royal kitchen.Читать далее

Down at the riverside there's a lot of stalls selling beer and food. Octoberfest comes to Lisbon. The music is more traditional with a Brazilian feel. There are a lot of people enjoying the music, beer and especially chilling out on the waterside whilst the sun sets.Читать далее

Lisbon Riverside

I head down one of the main pedestrian streets in Lisbon, Rua Augusta, under the arch and head for the riverside. En route there are hundreds of cyclists that go by. I'm not sure if it's a one off or regular thing.Читать далее

Walking Tour of Lisbon

The Elevador de Santa Justa when built was part of Lisbon's transport system taking people up in two wooden lifts seven storeys, with a walkway that takes you to the nearby area. At the top is a viewing platform giving 360 degree views of Lisbon. Unfortunately now it's mostly tourists that use it, with queues on about an hour and a half. But you can walk up the steep streets to the walkway for the views.Читать далее

Walking Tour of Lisbon

I did a three hour walking tour of Lisbon. It's a fairly low pace, but informative tour, and as we get to the second half of it I realise why it was a gentle pace. We start doing so many steps, up and down different areas.
Lisbon is built on seven hills and was once occupied by the Arabs.Читать далее

Travelling to Lisbon, Portugal

A delayed flight by an hour. Flew past the Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville and bounced on landing due to windy conditions at Lisbon.
We passed both Sporting Lisbons and Benficas grounds within a couple of minutes of each other on the taxi ride to the hotel.
Had a quick walk around the hotel area and found out it's next to the President's residence and Jerónimos Monastery, a massive building.Читать далее
