    Happy Thanksgiving

    25 November 2021, Turki ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

Had we been at home in Colorado, our Thanksgiving celebration would have been a quiet one. But we weren’t … and it wasn’t.

In fact, we had a very festive evening. In addition to my immediate family — mom, Deniz (my brother), Aylin & Murat (my sis & brother-in-law), and Hakan & Serenay (my nephew and niece-in-law) — we invited Cici, my cousin’s widowed wife, and Nevra, mom’s neighbor.

Thanksgiving is not a holiday that is celebrated in Turkey. But that did not stop us from doing so with all the trimmings. Mui was responsible for the turkey and the green bean casserole … both of which he cooked at mom’s. Mom was responsible for the mashed potatoes and stuffing. The gravy and cranberry were store bought from the commissary … as was the pecan and key lime pies.

A festive and joyous occasion … with good food, good camaraderie. With the ongoing pandemic, we all certainly have a lot to be thankful for … most importantly our health and being able to share this special day with loved ones.

    Happy 40th & Belated 33rd

    26 November 2021, Turki ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

When Mui and I got married in 1981, our wedding fell on Thanksgiving Day. This year, it fell on the day after. Forty years … that’s how long we’ve been married.

To celebrate, we all — meaning, mom, Deniz, Aylin & Murat, and us — went to a new Italian restaurant in Alsancak … Da Enzo. We turned the occasion into a joint celebration … a belated one for Aylin and Murat, whose 33rd anniversary was in September.

The food was excellent … as was the service. Mui enjoyed the chance to speak Italian with Chef Enzo, who came out to take our order himself. He’s rightly proud of his food. Alas, I completely spaced out taking photos of the delicious dishes we ordered … except for the dessert sampler with which we wrapped up our meal.

    Breakfast @ By Melly

    27 November 2021, Turki ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

I love the boutique eateries around Alsancak where we can have breakfast.

Aylin suggested that we all meet at By Melly this morning for a late breakfast. Great idea!

  • Fish & Rakı @ Karaburun İskelesi

    5 Disember 2021, Turki ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

A mostly-blue sky day with comfy temps that reached 66F. After a mostly overcast week with especially heavy rain on Saturday, we just had to take advantage of the change in the weather. With Mui still in Eskişehir — he left Wednesday for a pre-NY Eve party with his family — and mom wanting some quiet time as she continues to recuperate, it was just Aylin, Murat, Deniz, and I who headed off to Karaburun.

This small town, which sits on the tip of a peninsula that juts into the Aegean Sea, is one that neither Deniz nor I have ever been to before … mostly because back in the day before we made our permanent moves to the US, the old road made it a pain to go there just for the day. Beautiful scenery en route and in town. We went to the area known as Karaburun İskelesi [pier], which is on the waterfront … a wide promenade lined with restaurants, beyond which is a residential area.

Aylin and Murat had eaten at a fish restaurant here when they came to Karaburun for their anniversary in September. Alas, that restaurant had closed for the season in November as this part of the coast tends to be quieter than other places that are easier to get to. So, we picked another restaurant and sat down to enjoy a late-lunch. The temp was mostly comfortable — except when the sun went behind the clouds for brief periods — so sitting outdoors was a no brainer.

Since we were going to have fish — grilled whole with the skin on to keep the meat moist — we ordered just a few mezes. The beverage of choice was rakı … except for me as I don’t much care for this anise-flavored adult-beverage that is considered the national drink of Turkey.

The food was tasty … the service was good. That said, Aylin and Murat said they thought the restaurant they had previously patronized was better. I guess we’ll just have to return during the season to check it out.

  • Return Plans Jiggled

    7 Disember 2021, Turki ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

Mui returned from Eskişehir yesterday. His farewell get together with the family was a success by all accounts and they had great fun Saturday night at their mock New Year’s Eve dinner.

As it turns out, we might have to do a mock New Year’s celebration here in İzmir, too. You see, our travel plans have changed. This is not a change we wanted, but circumstances dictated that this would be our least stressful alternative. It is what it is!

At the time we made our travel plans, Turkey had a COVID-19 testing requirement to enter the country … the US did not. By the time we left the US in September, things were reversed. At the time, the US re-entry requirement gave us 3 days prior to departure from Turkey to complete our testing. That officially changed yesterday and the US requirement for testing went from 3 days to 1 day prior.

Any other time that would have been OK. Labs in Turkey provide ample testing locations with results provided well within the required time frame. But the “1 day” before our 2 January departure is a holiday. Labs are either closed … or unsure whether they will be open … or cannot guarantee results for travel testing within the normal timeframes. Mui checked with a lab that has multiple locations, a private hospital, and the testing kiosk at the airport. All with the same results … no guarantees.

So, Mui followed my suggestion, and while he was at the airport, he went to the THY ticket sales counter and asked about our options to change our departure date. As we had anticipated, a later departure was going to be too costly as our fare bucket — the 40% off promo — does not extend beyond 2 January. The agent who helped him said we could move to 31 December, but suggested 30 December would be a safer bet for testing purposes.

Thus, we will be departing on 30 January … same flights as we originally booked … just a different date. Another change … the equipment we’ll be flying won’t be a Dreamliner. Rather, we’ll be on the B777 that we’re more used to flying. I’m OK with that. We’ve got our seat assignments and all’s good.

Of course, there was a domino effect to these changes. It was now my turn to get busy making alternate plans.

Long story short, our IAH-COS flight with UA has been rescheduled … with the same exit row seats, no less. And our hotel reservation at IAH has been rebooked for the required overnight before continuing home (we don’t have enough time to make the last connecting flight to COS)

Our new arrangements are all in the can. Our ducks are lined up. 🤞🏻 all goes well.

Hakan, my nephew, and Serenay, my-niece-in-law, moved from Ankara to İzmir mid-October. They have since settled into the apartment they are renting in Ataşehir, a neighborhood in the Çiğli District.

Tonight they hosted the family for dinner. Serenay is an excellent cook … a selection of mezes, soup, and lamb shanks with potatoes were all on the menu. For dessert, she delighted us with her version of supangle, a chocolate pudding that usually has a slice of cake on the bottom.

A wonderful evening was had by all. It will be our turn to host everyone next.

    Dinner @ Sakız w/ Esin & Cenap

    10 Disember 2021, Turki ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

Braving the often heavy downpours that plagued our evening, we went out to dinner with Esin and Cenap, Mui’s cousin and her husband. As seems to have become a tradition, we opted to dine at Sakız Restoran, across the road from the Pasaport ferry landing in Alsancak.

In İzmir, often it is still possible to dine outdoors even in the winter … sometimes with the aid of heat lamps, which was the case tonight. Despite the damp chill, we were comfortable enough in the glassed in section on the sidewalk. … safer than being in the packed indoors section during the pandemic..

We opted for a selection of mezes to share and had a very nice meal with good company.

    Fun Food Day

    11 Disember 2021, Turki ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

It seems like I have a lot of food-related posts when we are in Turkey. What can I say, the food culture is very strong here … lots of restaurants and cafés and patisseries. As a family, we enjoy visiting our favorites … and checking out new places to see if we can grow our “favorites” list.

Today, we started our day with breakfast, joining Aylin & Murat, and mom and Deniz at Léone, a French-themed patisserie. This was a pre-reward for mom, Aylin & Murat, who then went to get their COVID-19 booster shots.

Sandy, our neighbor in Colorado makes beautifully decorated cookies. When Aylin and mom were visiting us in 2019, they got to taste some of the Christmas cookies Sandy sent over. I had thought about ordering cookies to take with me to Turkey this year, but the timing did not work out. No worries. Aylin found some at a Turkish patisserie. She had us over for afternoon tea today so we could test-drive the cookies. Yummy!

We continued our food-themed day with dinner at Paprica … an Italian restaurant just a few steps down the street from mom’s condo. The food is always good here … and the service as well. Murat made reservations in the indoors section … we had the whole room to ourselves. I usually have pasta, but opted for the Paprica Beef Special, which is not unlike çökertme kebabı … small chunks of beef served over shredded fried potatoes with yogurt and tomato sauce. We ordered the caramel cake to share six-ways just to refresh our palates. We were so enjoying our meal that I, alas, forgot to take photos!

    Mexican Street Food Night

    15 Disember 2021, Turki ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

Our place in Alsancak — which belongs to Mui’s sister, who graciously allows us to use it when we are visiting family in İzmir — was the setting for our next big food event. It was now our turn to host everyone for dinner.

The theme we chose for this dinner was “Mexican Street Food Fiesta.” The kitchen here doesn’t have all of the accoutrements we have at home … meaning not enough of any settings for eight people. So, just like one might find at a corner eatery in a small Mexican village, we mixed and matched.

On the menu … Mexican corn chowder; corn salad, beef empanadas, and beef tacos … and all the fixings that go along with these menu favorites. Liquid beverages included … margaritas, Dos X beer, and wine. For dessert … mini lemon tarts. All Mui’s doing.

Everyone seemed to enjoy everything … the sign of a successful dinner.

(I could have sworn that I took photos of each dish … I was wrong.)

My father had two siblings … a sister and a brother. Today, we were hosted for afternoon tea by Serpil, my aunt’s daughter-in-law, now-widowed.

Serpil is known amongst the family as “Cici” … which roughly translates as sweet/nice in English … it’s a nickname Aylin gave her when she was little more than a toddler.

At our request, Serpil made “damat paçası,” a dish that was brought to Turkey by the populace that emigrated here from the Balkan countries. It’s made with phyllo leaves, shredded chicken, and a special bechamel-type sauce. Of course, she didn’t stop there … she never does.

This year, however, we’re having a family-only affair tonight to celebrate their special day. Since we will be having a Christmas party tomorrow night, with the traditional fixings, tonight’s menu was more in the vein of antipasti … heavy hors d'oeuvres and adult beverages … followed by birthday cake and “strawberry Santa treats.”

    So much fun!

    25 Disember 2021, Turki ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

After we moved to the US in 1981, we seldom (if ever) had an opportunity to celebrate Christmas with the family. At first, it was because as worker-bees, we opted to spend our limited vacation time in Turkey during months when traveling wasn’t impacted by adverse weather. After we retired, fall seemed to be our go to time-frame for Turkey … mostly so that we could fly one way and return to the US by ship. Mom did happen to be in the US visiting us a few times around Christmas time, but that was it.

Since, 2018, however, this is our third time spending time in Turkey over the late fall/winter months … with the goal of being together for Christmas celebrations. And this time, my brother is with us as well.

After a private birthday celebration for mom and Aylin on Christmas Eve, we invited guests to join us for Christmas … mom’s neighbor, Nevra; Aylin’s mother- and sister-in-law, Melek Hanım and Özen, and our cousin-in-law, Serpil.

A festive night was enjoyed by all … a feast of tasty foods and beverages, both traditional and not … and a gift exchange that turned hilarious as people stole presents from each other.

Wine & Food @ Hus Wines

    26 Disember 2021, Turki ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

We wrapped up the Christmas week festivities with an afternoon outing to Hus Wines, a family-owned boutique winery in Urla. Aylin and her girlfriends went last Saturday and enjoyed themselves so much that she suggested we all go there before Mui and I leave.

The winery was established by the niece of one of Aylin’s friends, Ceylan, and her Chilean husband, Juan. The genesis of their story goes back to when her grandmother emigrated from Crete to Urla and began farming here after the 1923 population exchange between Turkey and Greece. It was the next generation — Ceylan’s parents — who planted the vines, and the current generation who picked up the torch, so to speak. The sad part of this story is that Juan, who hailed from Chile’s Vina del Mar wine district, passed away very recently … at the very young age of 34.

We were lucky with the weather today. While there were a few quick showers on our way to Urla, we had plenty of sunshine while we were there … with clouds blocking the sun periodically. It was warm enough to wander around the grounds and take photos before getting settled at the table we’d reserved for 2:30p. We appreciated having the place to ourselves for most of our time there … the pandemic, you know.

The food was all good … both the tapas selections that Aylin & Murat shared with Hakan & Serenay, as well as the main courses the rest of us ordered. Five people, including Mui, did the wine tasting … four wines: Emir, a white; Roze Öküzgözü-Syrah, a rosé; and two reds … Öküzgözü-Boğazkere and Syrah. All produced in 2019. The rosé is made with their own grapes and the remainder are vinified on site from grapes purchased from vineyards in Kapadokya and Denizli. I enjoyed my rosé, and also took sips from Mui’s taster flight. The wines are a little drier than I prefer, but not so much that I wouldn’t drink them.

After our outing, we returned to mom’s to make Rüdesheimer Coffee with Asbach-Uralt brandy. We first had this coffee on Viking Idi when we went on the Christmas Markets cruise in 2018 with mom and Aylin. Mom was as taken with the process of making the coffee and the special cups as she was with the resulting drink itself, which is topped with whipped cream and shaved chocolate.

Thus we have now brought our last full week in Turkey to a close. Laundry and packing, a bit of shopping for a few last minute items. And family time. That’s about all we’ll be doing over the next three days. Oh, and getting a PCR test on Wednesday to re-enter the US is at the top of our list, of course.

  • That all important COVID-19 PCR test with a negative result — Alsancak ... İzmir, Turkey.

    We’re Negative

    29 Disember 2021, Turki ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

I mean that in a good way. In the way we need it to be so that we can re-enter the USA tomorrow. Here’s how our testing story unfolded.

We started our day with breakfast at the Zeynel Gevrek Fırını in Alsancak. Deniz, and Aylin & Murat also braved the steady rain and joined us. By 9:30a, Mui and I were on our way to BioLab for a PCR test.

The CDC says the test is to be taken 1 day prior to beginning travel. They do this specifically so travelers don’t have to worry about calculating the exact 24 hours from departure time. But Turkey, and most other countries, are focused on the 24-hour thing. With that it mind, we timed our arrival for around 10:00a … just under our 9:38a departure from İzmir tomorrow. Hah!

The administrative assistant we spoke with said that we really should be within 24 hours of our 2:30p departure from İstanbul to the US … to be on the safe side. Thus, we ended up delaying the testing until later in the afternoon. I suppose, I could have pulled out the CDC order explaining the 1-day vs 24-hour difference, but it just wasn’t worth it … especially since we would be flying a Turkish carrier back to the US. Better to heed their advice.

We returned to BioLab around 2:30p with the forms they’d given us earlier in the day completed and ready to hand in. Once the info was entered into the system, we followed the yellow arrows on the sidewalk to a small shack for the actual testing. The swabbing — throat and nose — took under a minute for each of us. The time of the sampling was noted as being 2:30p … with the sample received by the lab for testing at 2:39p.

We still had to wait for our results, of course, but just having the testing behind us was a relief. To celebrate, we went to Beige for tea and a sweet treat … mom and Aylin joined us.

It was 5:38p when I noticed an email from BioLab in my inbox. I’ll admit to a bit of trepidation as I clicked open the message, scanning for that all important word … “NEGATIVE.” Yes!!! I was good to go. But what about Mui? I called him to tell him to check his email. Which he did promptly. Another NEGATIVE! Yay!!! Time to celebrate!

One last meal with the family. A Prosecco toast to wish everyone a happy new year.

Thus we wrapped up our four months in Turkey. Now to get home to Colorado!

  • Welcome to the Turkish Airlines Lounge @ ADB — İzmir, Turkey.
A light snack at the THY Lounge to tide me over until breakfast on the plane to İstanbul — İzmir. This Airbus A321-200 will take us on the first leg of our travel day — İzmir, Turkey.

We Begin Our Travel Day @ ADB

    30 Disember 2021, Turki ⋅ 🌧 50 °F

Our travel day got off to a start with news of a change to our schedule. Not necessarily an unexpected one, however. I will explain below.

Wanting to be on our way to the airport [ADB] by 7:15a, we were up at 5:30a this morning … I needed time to launder the bed linens and towels before we left. I was in the midst of doing that when Mui said that he had a text from UA advising that our IAH-COS flight tomorrow had been canceled and that we were booked on a flight through Denver instead. Bummer! The reason? Not weather-related issues forecasted to plague the Rockies. Rather, crew-related scheduling issues due to the fast-charging Omicron variant.

Frankly, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I was expecting this. With Omicron taking over the COVID-19 cases, airlines have been canceling flights left and right since before Christmas. It was too much to expect that we’d escape the disruptions. But there was no time to deal with the changes at that point, so I backburnered it until we got to the airport.

The silver lining of this longer-than-anticipated return home? We can sleep in tomorrow morning since the new flight is not until after noon.

Anyway, as planned, we were out the door a little before 7:15a. The taxi Mui had ordered was already parked at the curb. In no time, we were on our way to ADB. There was quite a bit of traffic and some light rain falling, but we made decent time arriving at the airport.

With the help of a skycap, we got our bags through the security checkpoint at the entrance to the terminal and headed to THY's BizClass counter. That’s when we learned that we could have asked the cab to drop us off at the CIP entrance available to BizClass passengers, thus bypassing the first security checkpoint. Oh well … now we know.

In any event, there was no queue at the counter. The agent quickly checked our PCR results and vaccine cards, tagged our four checked bags through to Houston, Texas, issued us our boarding passes, and directed us to the CIP Lounge, located beyond the security checkpoint that allows passengers access to the gates.

The lounge, where we are at present, is all but empty … a good thing during COVID-19. We found some comfortable seats and a nearby table for a quick bite to tide us over. I just tried to use the UA chat app to see about getting our pre-assigned seats on the new flights changed … after all, we paid for E+ seats on the IAH-COS flight we’d originally booked. Alas, the wait time is over an hour. No surprise! I imagine we’re not the only ones trying to deal with changes to their flight plans. I’ll have time to deal with this when we get to İstanbul.

    30 Disember 2021, Turki ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

This is going to be a quickie post. We’re already on descent into IST and I’ll need to put my iPad away shortly.

No sooner had I closed the UA chat feature that boarding was called for our 9:35a flight to Istanbul [IST]. Exiting through the special gate for the CIP Lounge, we boarded one of the buses that shuttle passengers to aircrafts that are not parked at a jetway. Unlike the usual buses, this one had comfy seats installed, so we did not have to stand like we usually do for the short ride.

Turns out that the A321-200 that would be whisking us to IST was actually parked at a jetway. Had we not been in the CIP Lounge, we would have walked right onto the aircraft. Anyway, the bus dropped us off at the base of the tower and we ended up walking up two flights to get to the jetway. Luckily, the carry-on bags were not heavy!

The aircraft pushed back from the gate on time and was in the air without much delay. We weren’t quite leveled off when breakfast was served on this 50-minute flight. In fact, we’d barely begun eating when the pilot announced that we were beginning our descent into IST and that he expected to be on the ground around 10:31a. Luckily, our breakfast consisted of food that was easy to scarf down!

I love the THY Business Lounge at IST. It is highly touted by travelers … and rightfully so. Anything you could want from comfy sitting areas; to a TV room where sometimes they screen concerts and such on a large screen; to showers; to luggage storage bins; to high-speed internet; to a business office; to varied, tasty, and cooked-to-order foods. The lounge has it all.

We enjoy spending time at the lounge between flights. It’s a highlight of what is a long travel day for us when we are flying back home to the US.

Not this time, though. It was still great to have lounge access. But I spent most of my time working on the details of our rescheduled flight from IAH to COS via DEN. The good news? We’ve got the seats we wanted, and I was able to switch our existing E+ (Economy Plus) upgrade to one flight and use travel credits to pay the upgrade on the second flight. And somewhere in there, I managed to munch on some delicious food and take a wander around the lounge for some snapshots.

And now, it’s time to pack up and head to our gate. The overhead display says that it will take us 14-19 minutes to walk to the B gates. We’re going to give ourselves an hour. Why? Because passengers on US-bound flights from this part of the world get “treated” to a tertiary security screening at the gate before embarking the plane. The queue can be long.

Off we go. More from the long-haul over the Atlantic …

Rather, I mostly listened to music while I read. I did a bit of writing in my journal, too. I guess processing photos took up most of my time.

It was a relief to finally be aboard the Boeing 777-300 that is our chariot back to the US. In no time, we were in our seats, the stuff we expect to need in-flight tucked into the cubby below the ottomans that serve to extend our seats into lie-flat beds

The BizClass cabin is divided into two sections with the second galley and the facilities separating them. We’re in seats 5J/K in the first row of the back section. Of the 21 seats in this section, only 10 are occupied … which is great. In fact, when the time came for the cabin attendants to make up the beds, Mui had her prepare the one on the other side of the aisle. This has allowed me to use my lie flat seat like a daybed and get in and out of it easily as, par for the course on a daytime westbound flight, I did not sleep in order to keep my jet lag to a minimum.

The aircraft pushed back from our gate at IST on time at 2:30p, but it was another 15 minutes before we were wheels up. We’ve been bucking headwinds ever since … which is normal when flying westbound. At the moment, the monitor is showing a 29 minute delay with an ETA of 7:29p. Doesn’t matter. It’s not like we have a connecting flight tonight.

Service has been great. Eastbound in September, the food was prepackaged and served all at once. This time, everything is on par with the THY standards to which we’ve grown accustomed. Warm towels with which to wipe the grime off our hands and faces; warm nuts with cocktails; trolley service for the presentation of food options … cold food pre-plated on real china and covered with a plastic lid; everything else served on demand. The flight attendants have been checking on me regularly since I am not sleeping, offering snacks, tea, coffee, water … excellent job guys and gals.

The in-seat monitor showed that we took a more southerly route across the Atlantic, which means that we missed Greenland this time. Bummer. As we crossed over Newfoundland, however, I managed to see some ice-covered landscape, with the sun setting to the west adding a pink hue to the clouds. It feels like we are perpetually chasing the colors of the sunset as we head west.

We’ve now got about 30 minutes left in the air. More when we get to our hotel @ IAH …

  • Room 1108 ... on the first floor of the South Tower @ IAH Marriott — Houston, TX.

Checked In @ the IAH Marriott

    30 Disember 2021, Amerika Syarikat ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

I’m literally swaying … a form of dock rock that follows a long flight … not to mention being sleep deprived. After all, it’s 6:36a in Turkey now and that means that we’ve been on the go for 25½ hours. Time to get some shuteye. But first, I need to relax a bit, and I do want to stay up until at least 10:00p. So I am going to add the final bits to for today’s footprints before I crash.

We did make up a bit of the delay and TK33 landed at 7:18p Houston time … just 18 minutes behind the ETA instead of 29 minutes. We made our way to immigration … or rather, to the Global Entry kiosks. Technology has been improved since the last time we came into the USA through IAH. Instead of scanning our passports, we just needed to take photo of ourselves, which the system verified as being us and spit out the receipts we then handed to the agent at a special GOES kiosk. We were done in a jiffy … always a pleasure.

If only we were able to retrieve our checked bags as quickly. It took at least ½ hour for our bags to show up on the carousel. Turns out that there was no special treatment for BizClass luggage, even though they were tagged for priority handling.

Bags in tow, we walked through the customs area and out to the terminal proper, where we took an elevator down to the subway level. Unfortunately, luggage carts are not allowed on the train, so we had to hoof it 2500 feet — or nearly ½-mile— from Terminal D/E to the Marriott IAH. No matter, we appreciated the chance to stretch our legs.

We’re in room 1180 this time … on the first floor in the south tower … the last non-connecting room that was available. The room is no different from the north tower rooms we’ve been assigned during previous stays.

And that’s it. We’re back in the USA. It feels nice to be back home … almost. Keeping fingers crossed that our flights go as per the latest schedule tomorrow. The National Weather Service is calling for a Winter Weather Advisory for Colorado starting tomorrow at 5:00p … through 11:00a on 1 January. Sure hope we beat the storm.

  • From the United Club Lounge @ Terminal E — IAH ... Houston, TX.

At the UA Lounge @ IAH

    31 Disember 2021, Amerika Syarikat ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Welcome to the evolving tale of our travels back home during COVID-19. We’ve changed our minds about flying all the way to COS. But first, let’s get caught up as Mui and I relax in the United Club Lounge in Terminal E @ IAH … at not quite 10:00a.

We had a good night’s rest, staying up until 10:30p to minimize our jet lag. Which is why, I guess, that we were up at our usual 6:00a.

Checking the phone, I saw that I had a message from United advising that our seats on the IAH-DEN flight had been changed from the exit seats I had purchased yesterday — 40A/B. The message noted that this was due to a change in equipment … from a B757 to a B767. I’ll deal with whatever refunds we are due when I get home.

This change message was followed by another … advising us of a delay for the IAH-DEN flight. UA623 was now scheduled to take off at 1:10p instead of 12:40p. The reason? Not the storm brewing in Colorado. Rather, UA needed to find a new flight crew due to sick call-ins because of Omicron, which is still blowing up here.

With this delay news, we decided to cancel the DEN-COS leg and just Uber it home from Denver. The driving force behind this decision is the forecast for a snow storm that is expected to arrive in the area around 5:00p. We’d rather be home before then.

After hurrying through our ablutions, we headed down to the hotel lobby for breakfast. It was disappointing to see that they’ve gone to a pricey buffet breakfast due to lack of serving staff. Yes … Omicron strikes again!

After breakfast, collecting our bags from our room, we walked to Terminal E and took the walkway to Terminal D to make arrangements to terminate our trip in DEN. There was a surprising lack of people in line. In fact, this section of the terminal was all but deserted. Not that I’m complaining, but unusual on New Year’s Eve. Anyway, one of the agents made the necessary changes and soon we were heading to the UA Club Lounge where we used the passes we get with our United co-branded credit card.

Thus that brings me back to where I started … sitting in the lounge where we have a couple more hours to while away. 🤞🏻UA finds a flight crew to get us out of Texas and into Colorado.

    UA623 … IAH to DEN

    31 Disember 2021, Amerika Syarikat ⋅ ☁️ 32 °F

Slated for a 12:20p boarding, we left the UA Club Lounge just before noon. Thanks to a “we are pleased to welcome you aboard UA623” text message we had received from the airline just moments before, we were confident that the flight was a go. What we weren’t confident about was that it would depart at 1:10p … it’s new EDT.

Sure enough, no sooner were we at Gate E4 that an announcement was made, delaying boarding 10 minutes and advising us that one last crew member whom UA had managed to scrounge up for our flight was en route and scheduled to land @ IAH shortly after 1:00p. Our new ETD was 1:30p … not bad. In fact, boarding did begin at 12:30p … and our flight was wheels up at 1:39p … with a new ETD showing us landing @ DEN at 2:54p.

It’s been a bumpy flight almost from the get go. But the flight crew managed to find a sweet spot at a lower altitude, so things seem to be smoothing out.

Our seats on the B767 that is taking us to DEN turned out to be an unexpected boon. They are two of the four seats set aside for crew rest when the aircraft is used for long haul international flights. Wider seats … plenty of legroom … and even a leg rest that is doing wonders for me since my feet aren’t otherwise touching the floor.

I guess, this is it for the time being. I’ll wrap our day … and the trip, for that matter, after we get home.

  • Welcome to DEN — Denver, CO.
Big flat flakes are a-flying @ DEN — Denver, CO.Looks like this snow is already starting to stick — @ DEN ... Denver, CO.

    Home Sweet Home

    31 Disember 2021, Amerika Syarikat ⋅ ⛅ 32 °F

Well, we didn’t beat the snow home!

We were on the ground shortly before 3:00p MST … to big, white flakes blowing about in the wind and sticking on surfaces., That said, the runways were clear, and we would later find I-25S to be clear as well.

Once on the ground, we made our way to baggage claim. While Mui waited at the carousel, I went in search of some “abandoned” luggage carts and lucked out with two. Yay! It took a while for the bags to show up, but definitely not as long a wait as we had @ IAH.

Next up … we went out to the area set aside for ride apps like Uber and put in a request for a comfort class vehicle. What a scam! When weather moves in, the fate goes up.

In any event, we were home shortly before 5:00p. No white stuff visible anywhere … though that has since changed. Mui rushed off to pick up the mail and some groceries. We have enough food stuff now to tide us over for a 5-day quarantine … as suggested by the CDC.

I was hoping to stay up later but it is now 8:30p and I can barely keep my eyes open. There’s not the slightest chance that we’ll be awake to ring in 2022. No matter.

Time to bring this adventure to a close. As well as 2021 … another year of living with a pandemic. May the new year see us finally getting back to a new normal … with continued precautions as appropriate to keep everyone safe.
