      Cairns: Botanic Gardens

      Today we visited the Cairns Botanic Gardens … billed as a tropical paradise. It is considered to be one of the best exhibitions of tropical plants in the country.

      To make the most of the cooler hours, we took an Uber to the Botanic Gardens, arriving about ½-hour after the grounds opened at 7:30a. By 10:00a, the heat and humidity had risen … but was still bearable. Another hour saw us sweating buckets and seeking shade and breeze where we could.

      The gardens consist of several collections that are grouped in smaller gardens that span both sides of the road that bisects the grounds.

      To name a few of the areas where we strolled today … the Flecker Garden … featuring plants from steamy SE Asia jungles to Tropical North Queensland; the Gondwanan Heritage Garden … tracing the evolution of plants; the Watkins Munro Martin Conservatory … housing the most tender plants, including orchids, and a collection of local butterflies … the latter two had been removed, unfortunately; the Zhangjiang Chinese Friendship Garden … located at the Freshwater Centenary Lakes … reflecting the Chinese cultural heritage of Cairns.

      Also on the grounds of the Botanic Gardens are three of the WWII era fuel storage tanks that were connected to the naval docks in Portsmith via 3.5 miles of pipeline under the streets of Cairns. These reinforced concrete tanks were excavated into the side of the mountain in order to make them less visible to enemy planes flying along the coastline. In 1991, the tanks were redeveloped into an arts center. Two of them are used for performing arts and were closed today. Tank 4 is primarily used for visual arts and was open today with a small art exhibit that we enjoyed in between our garden strolls.

      We wrapped up our visit at Tank 64, the café at the visitor center … highly recommended by our Uber driver. He did not steer us wrong. The food was delicious, and the A/C seeping out from the café itself on to the terrace where we sat was most welcome.

      The Australian Tank and Armour Museum

      After my flight, I went up to the Australian Tank and Armour Museum. I did take a load of pictures of tanks but only a couple of people I know would be remotely interested in seeing them so I'm not uploading them on here 🤣. While I was there, I did something that I've wanted to do for a long time and that is to shoot live rounds from a WW2 British 303 rifle. To 'get my eye in', I fired 20 rounds from a .22 rifle and then I shot another 10 rounds from the 303 into a target a considerable distance down the range. I did pretty good - all of the. 22's in the '10' and all of the 303's in a nice tight group just left of the centre. You can't fire live rounds in the UK, so this was an awesome and rare opportunity to get to experience 🎯.Read more

      Botanical Gardens

      Oh beans in toast, how I have missed you.

      Woke up at a lovely 7am, giving myself an hour to get ready and begin the walk to the girls hostel. Picked them up at their hostel and continued on our way to the botanical gardens. I very nice walk, however Google said it would take around an hour. It took us 2hrs. Granted we did stop a few times and it was hella hot so we were going very slow but we made it eventually.

      On the way we saw a cool fruit tree and after each of us asking our families, we eventually came up with it being a Jack Fruit. Thank you mum/google. I really like Jack fruit but I had no idea that is what it looked like. A mix between a melon and a porcupine. Wild.

      The gardens were very nice. They had a salt water lake and a fresh water lake which were both pretty. Then a nice walk through a 'jungle' boardwalk. It was a lot cooler in there which was good. Then some lawns and a gated garden. It wasnt like the botanical gardens in Melbourne or Adelaide as there wasnt many flowers and sculpted areas. It was more a collected of their plants stuck together with some paths going through. But we found a lawn with some shade to relax in.

      We all ended up falling asleep in the shade. Little dodgy with all our stuff but between the 2hrs of walking and the heat we were exhausted. Once we woke up we had our little picnic and the read for a bit before getting kicked out at 2pm. What gardens closes at 2pm on the weekends?

      Also, we saw some signs after walking through the places so that was mildly unnerving.

      Anyways, went back to the hostel. I grabbed some things I need for my new job/ things I am running low on and relaxed in the hammock again.

      At around 7, once the sun had set I met Rebecca for a bit if a walk and chat. She had done the great barrier reef all day and the company she did it with was the only carbon neutral, environment benefitting company that runs the tours. So I will be booking my trip with them for definite. It's a little bit more expensive but its worth it for something like that.

      I then made some dinner, tried to use up as much of my food as possible so I'm not lugging it about on the bus and relaxed again. They were playing Hocus Pocus in the pool area which I missed the first half off. So I chose the quiet dark air condition room. Definitely a smart choice.      Read more

      Cairns Botanic Gardens

      Diese Nacht war besser als die letzte. Das Mädchen ist heute auch abgereist, bin gespannt wie die kommenden Nächte werden.
      Heute habe ich mir vorgenommen zu den Botanic Gardens von Cairns zu gehen. Habe mich also auf den Weg gemacht und die 4km hingelaufen. Auf dem Weg ist dann ein normaler Bus an mir vorbeigefahren und mir ist eingefallen, dass ich ja nicht mehr in Port Douglas bin und hier im Cairns Busse überall hin fahren..
      Bei den Botanic Gardens angekommen war meine Wasserflasche schon fast leer und ich habe einen Ort gesucht, an dem ich sie wieder auffüllen kann. Es gibt dort ein kleines Restaurant in der Mitte von dem riesigen Garten. Bin also dort hingegangen und habe gefragt, ob ich hier meine Wasserflasche auffüllen könnte.. der Mitarbeiter hat mir dann gesagt, dass ich vorher irgendwas kaufen müsste und dann könnte ich so viel Leitungswasser haben wie ich will.. da sie ja auch was verdienen wollen musste ich mir dann eine 300ml Wasserflasche für 5AUD$ kaufen.. die habe ich dann sofort ausgetrunken, ihm die leere Flasche gegeben und dann meine Wasserflasche aufgefüllt. Das gute war, dass sie schon vorbereitetes Leitungswasser im Kühlschrank hatten, es also sehr kalt war :)
      Im Garten gab es hinter jeder Ecke eine neue Pflanze, die ich noch nie gesehen habe. Gerochen hat es auch extrem gut.
      Für den Rückweg habe ich dann den Bus genommen und an der Bushaltestelle ein älteres Ehepaar getroffen, die auch aus Deutschland kommen.
      Wieder in der Stadt habe ich einen großen Straßenmarkt namens „Rustys“ gesehen, in den ich dann auch noch gegangen bin.
      Es werden dort sehr viel Obst und Früchte sehr günstig verkauft.
      Es gibt dort einfach 6 Avocados für 2AUD$. Im Supermarkt kostet eine schon 2,50AUD$.
      Grüner Spargel ist auch extrem günstig. Wenn ich wüsste wie ich die hier im Hostel machen könnte, hätte ich die gekauft.
      Später hatte ich dann noch vor zurück zum Einkaufszentrum zu gehen und T-Shirts zu shoppen, doch es war schon 16 Uhr und es schließt schon. Es schließt hier alles so extrem früh..

      Botanischer Garten

      Heute ist nicht wirklich viel passiert. Wir waren zwar früh wach, haben aber noch lange im Bett gelegen und gelesen. So auf Dauer ist die Hitze hier ziemlich anstrengend. Andreas muss mit der Sonne auch aufpassen und der Haut etwas "Ruhe" geben. Deshalb gab es heute nur einen kurzen Ausflug in den botanischen Garten.

      Der Eintritt ist kostenlos und es gibt viele schattige Wege und Sitzgelegenheiten. Hier konnte man die Hitze gut aushalten. Der Garten ist schön angelegt, hat ein kleines Schmetterlingshaus, ist aber jetzt nichts besonderes. Kann man sich Mal anschauen, wenn man gerade die Zeit dafür hat.

      Im Anschluss sind wir noch den Jungle Boardwalk auf der gegenüberliegenden Straßenseite gelaufen. Ja, in Cairns gibt es keinen Stadtwald, sondern einen Stadtdschungel. Außer einem Dschungelhuhn und ein paar Enten und Vögel gab es keine weiteren Tierchen zu sehen.

      Der Rest vom Tag war ein kurzer Besuch auf dem Rusty Market um frisches Obst und Gemüse und ein paar super leckere glutenfreie Donuts 🍩 einzukaufen, Footprints schreiben, Einreiseformalitäten für Japan erledigen, und dem Gewitter zuhören. Ja, es hat tatsächlich geregnet. Wirkliche Abkühlung hat das aber nicht gebracht.      Read more

      Cairns Downtown & botanischer Garten

      Nach einem zirka halbstündigen Marsch ab unserem Apartment erreichten wir den botanischen Garten. Dieser bot viel Schattenplatz - an die Temperaturen hier im Norden müssen wir uns erst gewöhnen. Nach einem kühlen Drink nahmen wir den Bus nach Downtown.

      Dort informierten wir uns zuerst einmal über Ausflüge zum Great Barrier Reef und spazierten dann in Richtung Küste. Da gibt's eine 4800m2 grosse (künstliche) Meerwasserlagune, in der man baden kann. Cairns hat keinen Strand und man sollte wegen den Quallen im Meer nicht baden, daher ist das eine tolle Alternative. Leider hatten wir keine Badesachen dabei, aber der Pool war eh ein bisschen (zu) voll.

      Auf der Suche nach einem Restaurant fürs Abendessen, kamen wir an ein paar Bäumen vorbei, die über und über voll mit Flughunden waren. Ein echt grusliges Spektakel, als plötzlich alle hintereinander in die gleiche Richtung davon flogen... das waren tausende!!😖

      Fürs Abendessen entschieden wir uns schliesslich für das Restaurant Frydays. Seit langem gab es wieder einmal Fish&Chips 😁 Und um die Ecke fanden wir danach noch einen tollen Laden mit erfrischender Joghurt-Glacé und frischen Fruchtstück-Toppings.       Eigentlich wollte ich mir heute sowohl den botanischen Garten als auch die Stadt selbst ein wenig anschauen, aber der botanische Garten und der angrenzende Urwald waren so riesig, dass ich darin irgendwie die Zeit vergessen habe. Hab noch nie in einem botanischen Garten so viele verrückte Blüten und Pflanzen gesehen. Auf jeden Fall der mit Abstand beste der Reise!Read more

      Da wir morgen schon unseren Hippie-Campervan abgeben müssen, haben wir den Vormittag damit verbracht unsere Rucksäcke zu packen und für morgen alles vorzubereiten.

      Am Nachmittag sind wir dann durch den botanischen Garten spaziert und haben dem Mount Whitfield Conservation Park einen Besuch abgestattet.Read more
