      HOLLOWAYS BEACH

      February 6, 2020 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Also nichts wie rein in die See!

      Last leg(s)

      September 13, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

The Cairns flight was also delayed due to the incoming flight being late. The on-time KPIs will be a bit bruised after all this. I haven’t had my customary whinge this trip so it’s time: BNE flights from gate 16 are not blessed with an air bridge so it’s down stairs - along the tarmac then up stairs. Not good for those who have carry on only! Just not good enough for a Cairns flight. I also had decided to get some duty free and of course that added to the degree of difficulty! Anyway - I survived and got to 2A intact. It is an Embraer 190 - a lovely aircraft that also has the bonus of a row of single seats in BC. I don’t often have window seat AND an aisle seat! The Lois sparkling by Lane winery (geddit?) is a classy fizz and has been a quality add to QF BC these last few months. Lunch was lovely moist chicken with a meaningless mound of quinoa- particularly unsuited to an aeroplane tray as the particles are quite mobile. We should let the South Americans who have it as a staple - keep it! Don’t start me on Australian grown cotton or rice………… I think I am tired!!!
Whinging done! I think we are over the top of Mackay so not far now. Here is the reef, now Fitzroy Island and now low over my village. I am home - it’s very windy but warm so not too much of a shock. Work tomorrow but my next trip is less than 3 weeks away so not an issue! Thanks for following, thanks for the catch up Sandy and a BIG thank you to the Lion City for being - well Singapore! A hard place to not love and I look forward to an even longer stay next May

      Almost done

      May 9, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Arrived in BNE at 5.30am (on time) and a quick pass through immigration and transfer to domestic. A little too chilly outside and shock to the system. Quite a good flight and seemed quick. The spare seat was a bonus particularly as the seat in front immediately reclined. Not a fan of this function! I didn't trouble the galley on QF52 so had coffee and some home grown comfort food in the lounge. There is a fair wait for my Cairns flight. All going well it should land back in the warm at 12.05. Kerry is having an amazing experience and I am looking forward to the Penguins to come. Home now after an uneventful flight (12.25pm) Cairns is still quite wet - hasn't let up the cabbie said! All unpacked, washing on, quick shop, quick (all relative) run and now settled in. Thanks for the follow everyone - this visit was everything I wanted it to be!Read more

      Heading home

      May 13, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

A hassle free transfer to the airport from our resort and the Bangkok Air flight was super efficient and well run. Bangkok airport (I won’t try to spell it) is enormous and combines domestic and international. The transfer to international was seamless and off we went looking for our lounge. A short deviation for duty free then we found the Emirates Lounge (recommended over the Qantas suggested lounge by Point Hacks) and it was a lovely lounge. Quiet and great service at every turn. Lots of food choices- both hot and cold - inc cakes, dips cheeses etc. A limited but classy wine selection and any number of spirit options. QF 24 to Sydney was relatively close by and left on time. Service was good and the flight was long (and cold). A very quick security clearance and we decided to try the outside shuttle (rather than the Qantas shuttle which has been a bit tedious in the past.) Qantas domestic was not a shuttle option outside so we returned to the Qantas shuttle - it was fine.
I continue this in the SYD Qantas Domestic Business Lounge. Kerry leaves for Adelaide at 8.50am (delayed to 9am) and I head the other way at 9.45 meaning we both get home at a reasonable hour. Kerry’s plane ended up not taking off and returned to the gate for navigation issues. They fixed them and we take off at about the same time. Kerry reported she landed about 1 1/2 hours ahead of me and all good. Likewise my transfer home was very quick (have to love carry on) and likewise settled in. Thanks for following our Choeng Mon holiday. While we did nothing it was everything and we both enjoyed our time immensely. It is hard to imagine we won’t go back for a repeat!

      Winging it

      March 19, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

The flight was delayed a further 15 mins - on top of the original 50 mins. Not smog but heavy fog apparently. Delays all down the line but not a issue to me atm - lounge was good, 25A is empty (swoon) and cabin manager Courtney has fetched me a glass of French from business (double swoon). The captain has also promised to put the boot in but the connection is looking shaky. A good flight but the cabin was as cold as a Seoul morning! Lucky I had 2 blankets. For brekkie a choice was Korean chicken porridge and it was really very good. Arrived in Sydney International just as my domestic connection was leaving. Connection is a loose term as I booked them separately - yes Kerry, we have discussed this but Cairns doesn’t always match up neatly when I do it - you professionals have other skills than me! The transfer desk person was very helpful and she managed to get me the last seat on a direct flight SYD-CNS on Jetstar! By swallowing my pride I will at least get home before 10pm! She also said it was full service booking and my carry on would be acceptable and all my points/credits had been noted - oh, and she gave me a cab charge to get to domestic. The experience was made even easier at the Jetstar checkin by me explaining to a wandering team member what had happened and she took me past the huge queue straight to the service desk. When I mentioned the full service and bags bit she did well not to fall about laughing! I won’t be rolling around laughing when I try to get my status credits transferred - some time on the phone I imagine. I did check in my bigger bag as it would have cost $45. The terminal is shared with Virgin and Rex so it isn’t the horrible place that MEL Jetstar is. The flight ended up by being delayed by 50mins (go figure) but I still get home about 3pm. The flight was ok and I had a nice sandwich and glass of sparkling. Quick cab home and in the door at exactly 3pm. Total unpack and first wash then a quick but half hearted run - for my seoul you understand! I am so glad I went to Seoul and really enjoyed immersing my self as much as I could in the Seoul culture (food!!) Colder than I like but it could’ve been colder. In summer it is the other extreme and a hot city would be hard work. I believe Holly and her lot are up here in paradise as we speak and Kerry arrives for a short trip on Friday. Living the dream indeed!!
Thanks for the follow and I have enjoyed your comments.

      Setting off

      March 13, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Heading off to the airport- leaving my tropical home for a colder (but warming by the day) Seoul. Well prepped by S & T I have cash for the subway from Incheon to my digs - which are VERY close to the station. I think I am correct in saying (Kerry?) this will be my first visit to any sort of Korea. Last time I made a comment like that I was gently reminded it wasn’t my first - so I tread carefully! S&Ts very recent trip has completely whetted my appetite so - bring it on! I bounce through Brisbane then a BC (2D) flight to Sydney ready for en early flight tomorrow morning.Read more

      Winding it down

      November 26, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Excellent day continues - the F35, the racing and even the sun shone. Back to Ovingham for a Sri Lankan curry. K grinds all the spices from scratch it was amazing - very aromatic and full of flavor. A Provence Rose was a perfect match.
Monday now: A very early start for me as I do go for a run regardless. I reserved an Uber so Kerry didn't have to share the 'joy' of the early start. Airport was busy but the priority lane is a breeze. They have a new lane open now that was needed. The club was starting to fill but they had coffee service nailed. Pre made coffees on a trolley for those in a hurry and rapid service at the machine. Snagged an upgrade so no brekkie in the lounge and will see what 1A brings. Flight was delayed for 1 hour - no crew! Got away finally and the day is gloriously bright and sunny. Good flying weather. Some excellent views of Ovingham and the overpass. Breakfast service was prompt and well presented - it may be a smaller plane (Embraer again) but they don't hold back! A pumpkin and goats cheese quiche with a glass (or 2) of Lois sparkling by Lane Vineyards (geddit?) I do enjoy this wine - so much so I have bought a crate for my cellar. K would have struggled with the choices as the other was frittata. Nice sourdough and THAT butter would have had her purring. 1A is a single seat - luxe!! So - a settle back with good music in my buds and a nice glass. Wonder what the poor people are doing? (to keep a family saying going). I have a busy December so I will soak up the last of this long weekend. A couple of hours in BNE then to FNQ by mid afternoon for some pool time. The pilot put the boot in so we arrived in BNE only 25 mins late. The lounge was quiet so I was able to recover after the runway and stairs....Home, unpacked, washing on and to the pool. A wonderful long weekend with lots of good times and memories #bringiton

      Duck Boat

      October 21, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

A military vehicle? A boat? How about Both!!

The duck cruise take you on a short journey around a trail and a small river. The guide does a good job of telling entertaining stories.

My favorite story is about a plant that looks like an ordinary palm frond. The guide took his hat off and hung it on the back of the frond. It has a ton of barbs that dig in and hold on when you try and go against them. Strong enough to easily support the hat. So, if you find yourself caught up in something like this, somehow you're supposed to relax, and slowly back out. At that point, it easily releases and away you go.Read more

      Last leg (I hope)

      December 31, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Finally boarded and on my way. This is a (relatively) tiny 737 MAX so my seat number 64K looked odd. I asked at the desk if it was right. He asked if I liked to be more forward. Of course I said yes so he gave me 47A??? On board this turned out to be 7A in a normal plane! Even more of a bonus I am seated on my own!! There is inflight WiFi as well!! As I am not a member of the family it came at a cost $USD15.99!! Worth it to try it on an international flight. Qantas say they hope to get some international flights connected in 2024. Interweb and power - almost civilised! I haven't flown in a MAX before and it is certainly a step up from the old 737 - quieter and a bit more roomier. Uneventful flight with a blast from the past - water in a cup with a tear off lid - so last century! Back into Cairns International - it is very close to Domestic but this is a first time for me. Home now - showered then unpacked. It has been steamy up here - mould threatening! So tropical FNQ! Thanks for the follow and I am pleased to be able to share what in the end, was an eventful trip away. I hope everyone has a great 2024!Read more

      On the leaving

      October 2, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Leaving at a more civilised time- not often I can see the bags on the porch in daylight! Have booked a reserved Uber - it worked well last time and I will be nice and early as I expect the airport to be very busy given the King has a birthday and it is end of school hols up here. Had a lazy pack then a swim and read at the pool. The Uber was a little late (4 mins) but we can excuse him this. I was waiting on the footpath and my neighbour came out in her Jetstar uniform- she said pity the Uber was nearly there - she could’ve given me a lift! The airport wasn’t nearly as busy as expected. Breezed through and up to the lounge. Overnighting at the Brisbane airport Ibis - I have good cred there having stayed many times - then a leisurely 🤞🤞 mid morning flight to Port Vila. Only a short trip but will give a taste.Read more
