      Glühwürmschen an den Russel Falls

      November 28, 2016 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Tall Trees & Lady Barron Falls

      September 17, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We headed onto the short Tall Trees loop that you can continue onto from Horseshoe Falls.

The trees in this area are just amazing and photos just don't show their size and height. The Eucalyptus regnans are just majestic.

You then cross the fire trail that heads up to Lake Dobson and start walking towards Lady Barron Falls. This is another beautiful easy walk. It takes me much longer than Bart because I keep having to stop to take photos 😄

After you leave the Falls you continue through large mossy trees till you get to a fairly long group of stairs that take you back up to the fire trail where you can walk back to the visitors centre or the Campground.

The full Three Falls loop was a bit over 7kms. Next stop - The Styx Valley...

      Mt Field National Park

      September 16, 2022 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

The free camp at Ouse ended up being perfect, beautiful views and the shelter was fantastic, we were able to leave everything set up for this morning, instead of packing it up to save it getting wet.

We headed to Mt Field NP and arrived just as the rain started!

One thing I hadn't thought about when packing to come down was hiking clothes for wet weather 🙄 (apart from our rain jackets) we packed for cold just not rain! So there wasn't any point in heading out on any walks without getting drenched.

Instead we drove up to Lake Dobson which was so beautiful in the rain and had a quick look before heading back down and went for a drive back out of the park and though some little towns and out to Junee Caves. The Caves weren't all that impressive but the walk out through the mossy rainforest was beautiful.

We got back to the NP Campground and set up. It's a great Campground with a nice shelter and has hot showers 🥰 and a laundry so we were able to get washing done as well.

Even with the rain it was a great day.

3 Wasserfälle und Tall Tree Wanderung

      January 22, 2020 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Endlich Spaghetti Bolognese! 😊

      Leaving Hobart

      October 23, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

The driving portion of my trip started today. I was allocated a MG ZS. It’s very roomy and nice to drive. The windscreen wipers and indicators are on the opposite side but it didn’t take as long as I thought to get used to that.

I’m heading clockwise around the island, not really going south of Hobart. There’s a lot I’m not going to get to see but there’s a lot I will see. I wanted to drive across the Tasman bridge so set google maps for a Woollies on the other side of the river. I wanted to pick up a few things, I could only only find some as it was a very small Woollies. I found the important stuff though. I then followed the Derwent river basically to New Norfolk. It was a pretty drive and followed the river very closely. I crossed back over the river at New Norfolk. It’s is one of the older towns in Tasmania and has quite a few Antique shops as well as the Australia’s longest continuously running insane asylum. I wandered around the outside of the insane asylum and then through the town.

A few minutes down the road is Salmon Ponds on the river Plenty. It’s was started as a salmon and trout hatchery. Given salmon are migratory they thought they’d come back to spawn but they didn’t so it evolved into a trout hatchery and still runs as such. I had lunch there - smoked salmon salad. I suspect it’s the same smoked salmon I can buy at the supermarkets in Perth but it was still good. Each pond has a different type of trout (one has Atlantic salmon). It was really interesting and I took some fish food so could see them come to the surface. They also had a trout fishing museum. Not somewhere that I would necessarily stop to visit but interesting enough.

Time was moving along so I headed along to Russell Falls which was the main goal of the day. They were amazing. A reasonably short walk from the visitor centre. The environment was very damp and cool. I then took a drive towards Dobson Lake as it had a couple of sightseeing points up the mountain. The sign said it the road wasn’t suitable for caravans, motor homes or coaches so I thought I’d be fine. Yeah nah. The road was very narrow and rutted in places. The first viewing site was 5kms into the 15km drive and I turned around there. Luckily I did stop there as while I was taking photos two vehicles passed me heading down. I would have met them on the way if I hadn’t stopped. The view was amazing but I’ll be more prudent in future.

I’m staying in Maydena tonight. A little weatherboard cottage with a much better view than my hotel in Hobart.

      Tassie pt 2

      April 5, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

      Mount Field National Park

      April 4, 2023 in Australia

The first stop of the day was to Mount Field National Park. Absolutely stunning!
I saw Russell Falls and Horseshoe Falls. The climb to Horseshoe Falls was like 1500 stepa. The view was worth it!

    • Day 659

      Hamilton to New Norfolk

      February 8, 2023 in Australia

The drive from Derwent Bridge was great. We saw the pipes for the hydro electric scheme. They are awesome. We spent 2 nights in Hamilton at a low cost camp and then 3 nights in New Norfolk.
Hamilton is very small which only had a pub/cafe which wasn't open while we were there (staff didn't show up for work) so we went to Ouse and had lunch at pub there. Mark had the Scallops and they were fat and juicy.
New Norfolk was great the camp was on a house block the owners were great we went up to Mount Field National Park and to Westaway Raspberry Farm and into Hobart to get the post.
We found the best cherries in Tassie in New Norfolk, Kings Rock Cherries they were large and juicy. So sad when we ate our last ones.

      Mt Field, day 3

      January 12, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Picked up the campervan, and drove an hour north to Bushy Park for a 4 hour kayak on the Derwent river. Then went 20 mins up the road to a pick your own raspberry farm. $3 each to go in and $14 a kilo for any fruit that you didn't eat but put in the bucket.
Staying at Mt Field national park on the Tyenna river. Jesse and I lost 6 lures in the bloody creek. I've got another packet of lures but I told him we ran out! He's now trying to make a bow and arrow to hunt trout with. It's 9:30 pm so I took the pocket knife of him and sent him to bed. Also threw the frisby for another hour today with Zach. He's pretty good but not as good as me. Amy got grass allergies and her face swelled up a bit, but I just laughed at her and told her we weren't going to drive back to Hobart because we'd already paid $16 for the campsite!
