      Bisschen Wind..

      January 27, 2023 in Australia

      A non-day

      March 8 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Of course it had to happen one day, but we were hoping it wasn't on our holiday.
I awoke this morning with a serious headache, but nothing else - and it was after breakfast that we thought I should test. And it was positive for Covid.
The rest you can imagine - we notified the bnb owner and she said her husband worked for a health centre and he recommended we get some anti viral medicine and gave us a national covid centre number. I spoke firstly to a clerk who took all my personal details, then next a nurse rang me and took more medical details and after that call I got a call from a doctor. She prepared a prescription and sent that to a local pharmacy - and we went and got the drugs. The nurse said they would send out to us a cellphone and some monitoring equipment - I thought that was a bit excessive.
Good ol aussies - they have been very kind to us and pretty efficient in my opinion.
We need to pick up the campervan on Sunday - so we are counting on the drugs to allow this to happen.
Also we are hoping Robyn doesn't go down next.
Tomorrow the temp is heading to 34.

      The Longest Day

      March 5 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We arrived in Tasmania just before 11:00 local time and we were feeling very tired - not much sleep at Nick's, the usual excitement I suppose - had to be at the airport by 4:30. We were late leaving Auckland as the flight before us out of the same gate, was going to Rarotonga and a number of passengers were late. And had to wait on our plane on arrival at Hobart because a flight from Melbourne arrived shortly before us and they didn't want to mix international passengers with common old Aussies. And then the car rental place was verrrrry slow at processing and we were the last.
So not really moaning, they just made the day feel long.
We chanced finding a place for food and coffee in an outlet area nearby and had a very welcome toasted sandwich each with an average, but welcome coffee. We bought some supplies there and set out to find our homestay. We got a little lost and arrived at seven mile bay so got out for a walk along the beach - we both agreed the sea air just removed the stress and tiredness we were feeling. We weren't far from our house and soon arrived.
Essentially we are in a new area for new rural properties - our place is set in a typical aussie rural scene.
We were told about and earlier met a bandicoot called Gavin, see photo, and has just come up to our window as I write this. We sat outside while the sun went down and watched/listened to all the birds settling in for the night.
As I ready to post this there are rabbits on the lawn!

Lake St Clair, The Wall and 3 Falls walk

      March 11, 2020 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Cold start to the morning outside the pub. Layered up and drove a short way to Lake St Clair. Walked along the side of the lake for an hour and a half. Lots of massive felled trees and saw one black venomous snake. It warmed up so quickly that Hannah took of 4 layers in 30 mins.
Next stop The Wall. I had been looking forward to this all holiday. A huge wall of hand carved Huon pine. Amazing detail, some awesome craftsmanship, no idea how the guy does it. It is all done by carving down and making the 3D relief shapes. Must see if you visit Tassie.
We finished the day by doing the 3 falls walk. A series of 3 waterfalls with massive eucalyptus trees all around.
Stayed right next to the walk in the National park for only 16 dollars. Bargain.

      G’day Sheila!

      February 22 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 30 °C

Motor home pick up day. Always a bit fraught, accom check out, taxi to depot, van admin, bags galore, getting to grips with the driving, food shop, navigation, a new space to negotiate - plus it’s been roasting hot today - so hard to think straight.

As we drove away from the depot, we were straight away reminded of the sound effects which come with van living! A cacophony of thuds, jangles, and general misconduct from the onboard equipment. Luckily nothing was broken, despite it feeling like the cupboards would be full of broken bits.

So, here we are, on our first site at Snug Beach. Nowhere near sorted yet, but I remembered the utter bewilderment of the first day from our last trip, and am staying cool (well sort of it was 34 c earlier 🥵). I’m doing my usual of pretty much reorganising all the cupboards and drawers, to make room for our bits. Feels like there’s less storage in here, so real creativity needed…..🤔

We’re in a different camper this time so a different design/layout. So with no further ado, let me we introduce you to Sheila……. She’s quite new, and welcoming, but no pushover. If she doesn’t want something in the drawer she’s already let me know!

Note the addition of a pull out step to get in and out, very welcome for this shortie, but inside the microwave and cupboards are well out of my league, so a new step has been purchased for indoor use 😂

So, I’ll leave this post for now, as we try to build a new working relationship with Sheila!

      MONA

      March 12, 2020 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Drove to MONA, a massive underground cellar door, brewery and art museum.
Started with a bit of wine tasting and a pie and beer. Then started walking around the 3 levels. Some amazing pieces of art work. I obviously loved the glowing light room, a massive white room which changes colour to make the front of the room blend in with the sides. Followed by 20 seconds of strobe light. Very trippy.
Other interesting art was a man who is tattooed and just sits there for 6 months of the year! Also a pencil that is controlled by the wind outside, and continually draws patterns of the weather.
We spent about 4.5 hours there in total then left to go see Auntie Jan for dinner.
Finished the evening with some star gazing, spotting Elon Musks starlink satellites.

Admin rainy day. Last day in Tassie

      March 13, 2020 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Got up outside Auntie Jan's house. Joined for some breakfast then started on the days admin.
We needed to book an onward flight from the Philippines otherwise we would not be allowed in.
Sounds simple huh.... however we saw a news article saying that the country would be in lockdown for 30 days from the 15th of March, to limit the Coronavirus outbreak. We were landing on the evening of the 14th. But the visa only lasts 30 days.
A few hours of going round in circles of what to do and other locations brought us back round to just going anyway, as they have good healthcare, have very few cases compared to the rest of the world, and are taking good steps to stop the spread. Plus potentially being in a hot country with sailing, surfing and diving probably wont be that bad.
So booked a changeable flight to Kuala Lumpur for early April.
That faff done we set off towards Richmond. Didnt end up doing anything apart from lunch as it was raining hard and we tried calling airlines and embassies for extra advice.
I tried calling the police to get a report number from the number plate incident. Cant do it over the phone. Drove to one place... closed. Drove to another, 30 mins of statements later I had a incident number for potential insurance claims.
Then drove to the van rental to show the damage. He said it was only minor and not to worry. 😃
Cleaned out the van and went for an early night.
      Faff and admin day done.

Bye bye Tassie. Hi Philippines. OR NOT!

      March 14, 2020 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

4.30am start to get to the airport on time. First leg to Sydney with a 2 hour stop.
Then onwards to the Philippines with Cebu Pacific Airlines.
Got to Sydney, was in the line for about 40 mins to check in, only to be told out flight was cancelled. They brought in the Coronavirus lockdown in a day early! Bugger!
Hopefully will be able to get a refund 😫.
Soooooo then we had no plan. What to do or where to go. Or even if to go at all.
Ideas of Venuatu or Samoa, or even going all the way across to south america.
Ideally wanted to get somewhere today, so flight choices were narrowing fast. Eventually settled on Bali as they had a low virus level, and with a bit of luck they wont close the boarders like the rest of the world.
Made it into the country, with no issues. After a bit of taxi faff and downloading the local Uber equivalent, we made it to our accommodation. Hot hot hot! With the advertised air con being a fan.
23 hours of travelling done! Bed time.
