      Nameless festival in Tom Price

      August 10, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

      Tom Price

      August 4, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We made our way to Tom Price. I was a giddy school girl. We got stopped by a train and we got the warning through the UHF radio. I don't know if it is the only place that does it. (See the first video)
We stopped at Albert Tognolini Lookout to see Munjina East Gorge. It is spectacular we are expecting big things from Karijini National Park.
As we drove up to the caravan park we passed by a calf wandering along the road and saw more in town later that same day. When i asked at reception i was told there is a wild herd of about 30 cattle that roam around the area. They are going to try and round them up and take them to a station.
Some amazing sculptures in Tom Price but very little to do. We did see the large tip truck.
We did a day trip out to Paraburdoo. We went to see the Big Green Mining Truck and the Red Dog Memorial (he was born in Paraburdoo and his owners left when he was 18mths old and they moved to Dampier). We have now seen all three memorials.
On the way back we saw another wide load. We have been stopped by a few now.
We are going to Karijini National Park for 4 nights and then back to Tom Price we are booked in for a mine tour.

      Mt Nameless (Jarndunmunha)

      August 17, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Today started out windy and cold and only improved slightly to warmish. We were always going to go to Tom Price later today after maybe a look at another gorge and a swim. But mum tried to put a saucepan back under the seat and it wouldn't fit. Wondering why, I discovered that the battery had moved, all the screws holding the battery box had pulled out. So after I had repaired that and over a 'cuppa we discussed our options. We decided we didn't want to tackle the corrugated road out to a gorge that we wouldn't be able to explore because we probably couldn't handle the walk, grade 5 or 6. We also decided that it was too cold for a swim expecially in a pool that is in the shade, so we headed off to Tom Price. This was quite a scenic drive through the Hamersley Ranges and past Mt Bruce, which is the second highest peak in W.A. We arrived in Tom Price for a late lunch , fish and chips, but instead of seagulls turning up we had Corellas . We then bought some supplies in Coles. The shopping centre is just a big long building with Coles and Liquor Land at one end and various shops and takeaways along about a 200mts long building. I noticed a Mitre 10 behind it and I'm sure there must be other stores but we didn't see them. After shopping we headed off to get some fuel when we came across the sign to Mt. Nameless. We heard some people talking about it the day before and they said the track was a bit rugged but well worth the look. So off we went. The track up the hill, mountain, started about 4 kms down a corrugated road. You had to go through a gate, which was open, and the track though narrow wasn't bad. It wasn't long though before it stared to deteriarate but there was no turning back. So onwards we pressed the track getting worse by the minute, ruts, boulders, pot holes, there was a spot where I was sure we were going to end up bogged even in 4WD but we made it. There was a pull off just around the bend but we decided to keep going and 20 seconds later we wish we hadn't, this was probably the steepest and worse section, bigger holes, bigger rocks and bigger ruts but fortunately not very long. There was another pullout at the end of it and we gladly took the opportunity to stop. We were not too far from the very top and decided this was high enough. For those who did the Skytrek in SA multiply that by about 8 and you might have a little idea how rugged this track was. This mountain is 1128mts high and from here you could see all of Tom Price and the rest of the view over the mountain range was awesome. We posted some photos but you know how disappointing they can be. Glad to say we made it back down safely with no damage. It was much easier going down than going up, mainly because you are rolling and not driving and spinning wheels. We finally got fuel and are safely back in our caravan.Read more

      Tom Price

      June 6, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Rain fell throughout the night and we woke to a soggy, wet camp ground.
The rain continued to fall throughout the day with little letup.
After waiting 19 years to come back and do the tour of the Tom Price Mine we checked to find out that the tour was cancelled today and due to OHS wouldn’t be on for at least another 2 or 3 days!
As a company mining town Tom Price had a Coles and a small shopping area which we wandered around. Went to the information centre and also found a really nice coffee shop, the Pickled Bean. Spent the afternoon around the camp ground as the rain eased up only to return again overnight.

      Day 36 Tom Price

      May 19, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Today we left Exmouth and drove up towards Port Hedland. We got about halfway, to a town called Tom Price.
Along the way we stopped twice. The first stop was just a stop to stretch our legs, have lunch and enjoy an ice-cream. The second stop was at a giant haul truck called Terex. It had been used for mining iron ore.
Finally we arrived in Tom Price caravan park. As we had arrived at the park late we didn't get to do much.
Tomorrow is my sister's birthday and we are going to celebrate her 11th birthday by exploring Karijini National Park.

      Day 37 Tom Price

      May 20, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Today we explored the area around Tom Price, which includes the mines and Karijini.
It was my sister's birthday. We woke up early to sing 'Happy Birthday' and give her her presents. We got her a whale shark soft toy, a Rubik's cube, a really fun card game, called 'Super Fight' and some clothes.
After the presents we fed the friendly park galahs outside. Next we went down to the visitors' information centre where we booked tickets to go on the Rio Tinto mining tour.
The mining tour was very informative and interesting. We learnt about how iron ore is mined and how everything in the mine works. We even got a souvenir piece of iron ore.
Next we drove off to the Karijini National Park visitor information centre. Here we learnt about Karijinis' history and Aboriginal history.
After the information centre we drove off to some waterfalls called the Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool. After hiking around the Fortescue Falls we were all very exhausted.
Once we arrived back in the park we had Jessica's choice for dinner which was pizza, cake and the movie, 'The Sound of Music'.
Tomorrow we're leaving Tom Price to explore some more of Karijini National Park.

Our first caravan park for 3 weeks

      June 26, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

A bottle shop nearby. That is a really good thing. Let’s just dwell on that for a moment. It’s less than 5k away, it is open beyond a 2pm > 6pm window. Don’t get too giddy while we have a little reality check: I still have to provide my Drivers license to make a purchase (think about that for a moment). For now I don’t have to prove where I will stay tonight to consume my purchases, and happily there was no requirement for the states finest (Police Force) to administer my purchase here in WA. Can you believe the State Police spend part of their shifts overseeing the antics at bottle shops - every day.

Change of tack: We are in Tom Price. It is a really big caravan park. We have the dirtiest van. Is it a shaming thing - that we were were offered the $10 wash your caravan service? I think we will have the dirtiest caravan at our next port of call too, where they actually charge for drinking water. $10 for 20 litres. What do you reckon? Just wait until we post photos from Coral Bay - yes it is as beautiful as it sounds. It’s just dry.

There are a lot of Galas here.

While we are in the highest town in WA, Tom Price at 747m, let’s dash up Mount Nameless (1128m), for great views of the Mine and the town that was built in 1960.
