  • Budapest Day 1

    23 Oktober 2023, Hungaria ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

We arrived in Budapest without a hitch. We went for the Parliament House for free as it was the day of the memorial of 1956 revolution that took place at Kossuth square where thousands of civilians lost their lives when the Russian tanks and military open fire into a peaceful civilian protest. Although the revolution was unsuccessful, it did awaken the Russian communist to the dissatisfaction of the Hungarian public, and a much softer communist rule followed. Hungarians were allowed to travel internationally, and some commerce was tolerated.

Parliament house is very grand and imposing. The night free walking tour was great. The tour guide had missing front teeth and was more like a friend showing you around his country. He was full of information and was very helpful.

  • Budapest Day 2

    24 Oktober 2023, Hungaria ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Spent the day at the Jewish quarter.
Visited the Donahy Synagogue and the ticket included a guided tour.
It was very sad to hear about the plight of the Jewish people over the centuries.
I was so drained after the visit, we rested for the rest of the evening. Didn't even make it to Bosanova Jazz.

  • Budapest Day 3

    26 Oktober 2023, Hungaria ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We met up with a client from Perth and she kindly showed us Buda side.
We visited the Buda Castle, Fishermen's Bastion and the Matthias Church.
In the evening we attended a free concert at the Liszt Academy of Music. The concert was to showcase the Doctorate student performances on classical guitar, piano and violin. Performances were of very high calibre.
Seating, however was a small nightmare. We got to the concert hall early as it was free seating. We sat down for 5mins and were asked to move for people that had tickets. So we moved only to be moved again after a further 3mins. We ended up in the seats, second from the front which were ended up being very good seats because we could see the pianist and the performers up close.

  • Budapest Day 4

    26 Oktober 2023, Hungaria ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We spent the whole day in the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts.
There is a special exhibition of Renoir. The exhibition took us through his early works to ones he did it in his last year's even when his fingers were gnarled and deformed from rheumatoid arthritis.
The permanent exhibitions were also very extensive. It was a huge gallery.
It spanned 3 floors with some galleries that could only be accessed by a specific lift, hidden at what seemed like the back of one of the rooms. Like a secret passage!

After dinner, we walked along the river past the Parliament and it is beautifully lit up. Quite a majestic sight.

We walked a total of 15.7 km from the time we left the accommodation. We were exhausted when we got back.

  • Budapest Day 5

    27 Oktober 2023, Hungaria ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We had our first proper rainy day yesterday, so we decided to forgo a Walking Tour and go to the Gellert Baths instead. Budapest is known for its mineral thermal baths. We spent 4 hours soaking in the various pools and it's different temperatures. There was an outdoor pool that we froze getting to, but the water was warm and it was a lovely experience to be in a warm pool in the drizzle. We even went into the super steamy steam room twice and sat in the plastic seats in front of the door as it was so steamy there was zero visibility. I didn't want any sweaty person sitting on me or touching me if I sat on the wooden bench because they couldn't see me .
We soaked all our aches and stiffness from all the walking, and bad pillows away.
I couldn't believe that we stayed for 4 hours. Helped that people were so chatty.
We had 2 couples help us at the baths. The first was an older couple from Naples who helped us work out how to use the lockers with a fob on a watch strap. It was such a maze in the baths, we were so fortunate to meet another young couple at the first pool, a guy from Argentina and his girlfriend from Barcelona. He was sent by his girlfriend to check out the other pools, and he came back and took us up and down stairs, winding through cafe and locker rooms, etc to the next pool. I don't know how we'd have navigated all that without him.
Another red haired young man from Austria struck up a conversation too.
It was pure providence that we found our exact lockers again at the end.

After the baths we travelled by taxi back to our accommodation and drove on the Chain Bridge which is only for taxi and buses. It was so nice to be driven and on such a beautiful route.

We had a lovely dinner at Tati Farm to Plate Restaurant to end a wonderful, extravagant day.

  • Pecs Day 1

    28 Oktober 2023, Hungaria ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We did not have to leave Budapest till 11am so we had a visit to the Hunyadi Square Saturday Food Markets. We noticed that mostly locals go there to do their shopping. We bought some sausages, a paprika pork belly slice, some veggies, all with the intention to make stew in Pecs. As we still had time, we returned to Aran bakery to buy a chocolate croissant for our train journey incase there was another delay and an almond croissant and a savoury Danish for our breakfast.
The train journey went without a hitch, the chocolate croissant was a good snack anyway as we did not have lunch.
Pecs accommodation is spacious, with the most comfortable bed so far and best of all, no keys. You enter and exit using numbers on an electronic keypad locking system for the big doors out the front and combination locks on the doors leading into the rooms. Most fascinating and very practical.
After unpacking, we were now famished and headed to a Persian restaurant in the town centre. Very well priced and delicious dinner of kebabs, butter fried chicken and rice, washed down with aromatic Persian tea.
The owner of the restaurant then proceeded to be our tour guide telling us the highlights of Pecs when he learnt that we were from Australia and had just arrived in Pecs that very day.

The walk back to the apartment after dinner was lovely gazing at the aspect of a full moon night against the cathedral spire.

  • Pécs Day 2

    29 Oktober 2023, Hungaria ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

A local food and flea market is always too interesting to ignore, even if it involved navigating public bus on a Sunday in Pécs. On the way to our bus stop which was 1.8km from accommodation, we passed a bus stop with lots of people carrying empty shopping baskets. Then a bus pulled up and they all boarded. Thinking they must be going to the market we want to get to, we too boarded and asked the bus driver if he went to the market. Bus driver asked, "Plaza?". I remembered that one of the websites or blogs said something about the market being in a something that resembled the word plaza. So we nodded, and boarded. Following the bus route on our google map was very thrilling. The bus headed towards the market (yes!) Then the bus turned and is now moving away from the market (oh dear!) Now it's heading towards the market again (Yes!) This suspense was exacerbated by the people with shopping baskets getting off at different stops far away from the market.
Anyway, we did finally get to the open air market, and it was thronging with people. We entered at the flea market area and saw how big it was. Probably about 150m each row, and there were many many rows. Huge! We walked through looking for the fruit and vegetables section and somehow found what looked like an open air food court. Stalls of sausages, pickles, skewers of meats, etc. We started with a sausage stuffed into a toasted hollowed bread roll. Interestingly, the lady toasts the bread only when you place your order. Then she squeezes the sauce you've picked (tomato, mustard, mayonnaise or chilli) into the hollow, then stuffs the sausage into the sauce. One by one. The queue was building up behind us, but there was no hurry. She could have easily toasted 4-6 rolls at a time but she did it one order at a time. Our order was only for one roll. We then had a rice dish with some pork shin through it and another large piece of meat with some cucumber pickle on the side. We were too full for anything else so we took away a large skewer of a variety of sausages and more pickles. We were as interested watching the locals as the locals were watching us. They were all too happy to tell us about the various dishes and how to order. Everyone waited patiently in line, and the stall holders attended to our gestures and pointing whilst the locals helped interprete. It was a delightful local experience. We witnessed a dispute between stall holders which we think was about territory as one stall holder was encroaching into her neighbour's. Although that was done loudly with lots of waving of hands and frowning, the participants ended up smiling and laughing.
The afternoon was much more subdued with a walk around the historic area of Pécs looking at the cathedral, the mosque-church and the synagogue. Only the cathedral was opened as it was Sunday afternoon, and everything else was shut.
We ended the afternoon with a towering coffee and chocolate ice cream sundae.
As it is getting cold, we requested for the host to turn on the heaters. The host and his wife came to our apartment and not only turned on the heater but stayed an hour chatting with us and taking us upstairs to show us the other apartments that they rent out as Airbnb too.

    Distance walked 7.9km.

  • Pecs Day 3

    30 Oktober 2023, Hungaria ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We had a strange moment yesterday when Ruby's watch showed an hour later than mine. Hers showed 2pm when mine showed only 1pm. After checking our mobile phones, we moved her watch back an hour. This morning, we got a message from Kai at 8.10am who was already at the shops. It should be 2.10pm in Perth, so why wasn't she at school? More confusion ensued when she told us she left school shortly after the bell went. Very confused, we even asked a shop lady what the time was. She told us it was 8.10am. Perth is supposed to be only 6 hours ahead. Why are they now 7 hours ahead. How did we gain an hour? We had a Twilight Zone moment before we realised that it must be end of daylight saving. Checked google. Indeed end of daylight saving was yesterday, and we never knew. Mobile phones and Garmin watches update their time accordingly. I don't understand daylight saving. Why do they want more daylight in summer which already has so much daylight? Now it's dark at 5.20pm instead of 6.20pm. Isn't it more logical to save the daylight for winter which has less daylight?

We decided to go to the Harkany Thermal Baths about 30km from Pecs.
We managed to get the connecting buses with time to slip in a Langos and coffee for breakfast. The only hiccup was that I was supposed to get a 24hr Pecs bus ticket to use for the day but neither the bus driver nor the information at the bus station could help. Also the bus driver refused to wait for us to get off the bus at our stop because we were too slow letting an elderly lady to alight first. So we had to get it at the next stop and walk back. Old lady very quickly vanished into a side s street. Fortunately we saw an elderly couple carrying a large bag each and a swimming float. We asked if they were going to Harkany Furdo, they gestured for us to follow them and showed us a shorter way to the bath.

The bath was so much better than Gellert Baths in Budapest. There seem to only be locals at this bath, there were less people in the baths and the bath was on a sprawling flat complex without any rabbit warrens.

Now happily relaxed and destressed, we are back at the accommodation for a quiet evening.
I've also added some quirky Pecs photos.

  • Leaving Pecs - Zagreb Day 1

    31 Oktober 2023, Hungaria ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We did a visit to the Mosque Church or Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kassim or The Church of the Purification of the Virgin Mary, and the Csontvàry Museum as our train to Zagreb is not leaving till 1619h.
Took a long time to have a slow lunch at King Matthias Restaurant and then coffee so that we could make use of the time waiting for the train to Zagreb.
Arriving in Zagreb at 2210h with 1 train change. It turns out that there were 2 train changes as they may have amalgamated 2 trains as there weren't enough passengers on our express train. We did not get to Zagreb till 2240h.
I then made the huge mistake of getting into a taxi that was outside the train station when we were forwarned to only get Uber ones as the fares are fixed. As we were already in the taxi and our suitcases were in the boot, he tells us the meter was on his phone when asked where the meter was. He then wanted to charge us 40€ when the Uber was only going to be 4.76€ for a 2.5 km ride. I paid him 5€ and told him I wasn't going to pay anymore. He then proceeded to hurl abuse at us, took the 5€ and tore it up. He then got into his car and continued to hassle us moving his car forward and back yelling at us whilst we are trying to get into the apartment. Most dreadful experience.

  • Zagreb Day 2

    1 November 2023, Kroasia ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

We thought we would walk to the Dolac Markets to shop for our dinner but when we got there nothing was open except stalls selling flowers. There would have been at least 50 stalls lining the street making it quite colourful and pretty. Ruby checked and realised it was All Souls Day and it was a public holiday. We settled into Dolac Bistro for dinner freshly made Burcek and coffee instead.

We then joined our first of 2 walking tours at 11am. This tour was done by an ex school teacher who was very informative, very energetic and politically left winged. She pointed out that Zagreb did not have a museum that reflected the conflicts and issues of the mid 1900s even though there were over 30 museums in Zagreb. She also added that on one occasion, she was dobbed by a Croatian eaves dropper and had the police interrupt her tour to question her. She still gave her political views in our tour but in a place quieterz secluded and away from the main square. The Cathedral of the Assumption of Virgin Mary has been under renovation for more than 20 years as the construction was with poor materials and every 150 years, Zagreb has an earthquake. The last one was in 2020.
She then pricked our curiosity and introduced a second waking tour that would shed light on the events of the mid 1900.
As we had missed the communist tour in Budapest, we decided to join this one at 3pm. This tour was even better than the first. The guide talked us through the political events from the Austrian Hungarian Empire to the 3 times that Yugoslavia was formed and highlighted the role of Radic, Pavlich and Tito's atrocities ending in the basement museum that the tour company had started. Quite revolutionary and very sad for the innocent lives loss and the people displaced.

  • Zagreb Day 3

    2 November 2023, Kroasia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We had another look around Upper and Lower Town and Downtown. Could not go into any churches or cathedrals as they were all shut and getting repaired from the earthquake in 2020. None of many museums appealed to us, so we just walked and participated in Croatia's biggest sport, drinking coffee or alcohol, people watching, and gossiping. Ruby was very happy to find that walnut liqueur was only €0.10 more than my espresso, so she had that at 11am.
Took a long time over a lovely Burek breakfast and Chevapi lunch.
We had so much time, Ruby even found time for a haircut.

  • Trieste Day 1

    3 November 2023, Italia ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

We are finally in Italy. We both feel familiar and more comfortable here. The trip to Trieste was uneventful with beautiful scenery.
Trieste is a town set on undulating hills. Taking a walk before dinner was either walking up steep cobbled stone roads and paving or down.
We did a short self guided walking tour of the town and were by chance, treated to the choir rehearsal at the San Giusto Cathedral. The Cathedral was stunning with mosaics from Ravenna and an eclectic mix of architecture.

Nice to be close to the sea again.

  • Trieste Day 2

    4 November 2023, Italia ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Today turns out to be a day of free entry into any museum across Italy to mark national unity. So we took the opportunity to go to Miramare Castle which was an hour away by bus from Trieste. The castle was built by Maximillian of the Hapsburg empire as he was very taken by the Gulf of Trieste. He, however never saw the finish as he was assassinated in Mexico. The Castle was beautiful with gardens and an eclectic collections of antiques and paintings.

It was very opportune too that there was a Coffee Festival at Piazza della Borsa with, of course free coffee and coffee liqueur tastings. A definite stop at the Piazza before more sight seeing.

After coffee, we continued with the second half of our self guided walking tour to the Jetty called Molo Advace, The Grand Canal, 2 Orthodox Churches and the Roman amphitheatre ruin.

The Greek Orthodox Church of San Nicolò dei Greci was nothing to look at from the outside and did not reflect the splendor that was to be found within.

Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint Spyridon was even more spectacular. Decorated on all 4 sides of the outside of the church with mosaic and beautiful architecture, whilst the inside of the church was equally splendid.

It was a long uphill via the Cathedral again and we got there just in time for the sunset.

Dinner was a simple meal cooked at the accommodation of salmon, bought from the market this morning with a broccoli looking vegetable called Romano and silver beet.

  • Trieste bus drivers

    5–10 Nov 2023, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

The bus drivers in Trieste all reckon they are Michael Schumacher, that brakes are only for absolute emergency, and it's pedal to the metal for brakes and accelerator. That in the windy streets of Trieste with sharp acute bends every few metres where its either uphill or downhill makes it an exhilarating or nauseating ride. If you happen to to be standing with suitcases, it makes the ride very treacherous. Worse if you have these easily manouverable 360° 4 wheel suitcases. Don't for a moment be fooled into thinking that securing a seat would solve those problems. We had seats yesterday, and wore hiking pants that unbeknownst to us are actually quite slippery. The buses have smooth plastic seats. We had to plant our feet firmly on the floor of the bus and hang on for dear life to not end up sliding down the aisle of the bus with our dignity disappearing into the Gulf of Trieste.

We hope for calmer bus drivers and straighter roads for future rides.

  • Padova Day 1

    5 November 2023, Italia ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

The train ride from Trieste to Padova was quick, smooth and the scenery was spectacular with snow capped Dolomites and little villages dotting the way.
After the generous host in Trieste Airbnb who has breakfast provision and ample amenities, even helped us print our Scrovegni Chapel tickets and deliver to us, this accommodation was a disappointment on first impressions.
We are staying here for 5 nights, yet they provided 1 dishwasher tablet, an empty handwash bottle, 1 roll of toilet paper and enough coffee for 1 morning. The reply I got from the host was "I'm sorry but we are not an hotel, so we provide only the Welcome Kit that you have found in the apartment. The guests have to buy everything else they need by themself". Ruby wrote a reply to that and they said they would try to get their cleaning company to drop off some more amenities. The apartment itself is beautifully appointed and new, with Smeg kitchen appliances.

We did a little walk in the centre and found yummy Pinsa, a sandwich made from pizza dough to uplift our spirits.
After lunch we visited the Church of Santa Maria Del Carmine, where I lit a candle in memory of Mum. On our way back to the apartment we spotted another church, The Basilica of Santa Lucia. Next to the church, Ruby spied a 'Free entry' sign and was welcomed by a warm and enthusiastic lady who only spoke Italian to us. She handed us a printed English guide and walked us through to introduce us to the Oratory of San Roch, telling us where to start and in which direction to go.
Beautiful frescoes depicting the life of San Roch.
Before we left she stopped us and told us the story of a wooden statue found in a river that has Mary pinching the nose of Jesus. We think her story was that Mary was protecting Jesus because of all the pollution happening in the world. With my little understanding of Italian, this translation should suffice.
Then back to the accommodation to cook dinner.

  • Padova Day 2

    6 November 2023, Italia ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

It was very difficult to book online for the visit to Scrovegni Chapel to see Giotto's frescoes. Firstly it was not available to book till late October and when it was opened, the site kept switching from the English option back to Italian.
We finally got the tickets and visited the Scrovegni Chapel today and it was worth all the hassle.
We began the visit in a room to the side of the chapel and were made to wait whilst they equalised the pressure and removed pollutants from the air. Whilst waiting, there was a documentary in Italian with English subtitles about the history and the explanation of interpretations of Giotto's frescoes. We booked 2 time slots at 9am and 9.15am which meant that we could stay till 930am in the chapel. I highly recommend the booking of back to back time slots. The frescos were magnificent. I can't do justice in the pictures nor describing the frescoes in words as to how wonderful it was.

Then we visited Church of Eremitani and the Basilica of St Anthony. The Basilica of St Anthony left me speechless. St Anthony's remains were placed in gold gilded monstrances and at his sarcophagus, there was much devotion and veneration. The architecture, the art and scupltures were stunning and overwhelming.

Following from yesterday's complaint, we came back to the apartment to find more toilet paper, an additional roll of paper towel, dish washing tablets and extra laundry detergent. I think it's to appease us so that we won't leave a scathing review. Unfortunately there wasn't any extra coffee nor handwashing liquid soap.

  • Padua Day 3

    7 November 2023, Italia ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Today we are following the URBS PICTA card trail that allows you free entry into battistero, oratorio, palazzo and capella where there are beautiful, and well preserved frescoes.

We started at the Palazzo Della Ragione, commissioned by Scrovegni done by Giotto but was destroyed by fire. The frescoes were redone by Giovanni Nicolò Miretto (fl. 1423–ca. 1440). Just stunning work.

Then the Capella Della Reggia Carrarese. It is a rather small capella but the works by Guariento were amazing.

Oratorio di San Michele and San Giorgio, had frescoes painted by Altichiero da Zevio working in collaboration with Jacopo da Verona

Before the last attraction, we stopped for lunch when we saw an pizzeria full of students. Padua has the second oldest university in Italy, with campuses spread around town giving a lovely lively vibe everywhere you go. We thought that's a cafe full of students would mean that the food was good and inexpensive. We were not disappointed.

Last by no means least on the list was the frescoes in the Battistero Della Cattedrale, by Giusto de Menabuoi. It was the highlight of the day. Like the Scrovegni Chapel, a small group was escorted into the battistero for a 25 minute visit. It included an audio guide that explained each panel of the frescoes. Like the Scrovegni Chapel, this is UNESCO World heritage listed.

It took us 15km to complete all 5 venues. Now we are completely so impressed and even more overwhelmed than yesterday. Even walking around Padua was a feast for the eyes. There are markets under the Palazzo Della Ragione and it's Piazza Della Frutta that were running for 800 years. We walked through some old streets with castle like turrets and towers. Probably homes of wealthy merchants.

    Distance walked today 16 km.
Our total distance so far is approximately 780 km.

  • Padua Day 4- Day trip to Venice

    8 November 2023, Italia ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

We set out to see 7 churches with paintings of Veronese, Tintoretto, Bellini and Tizian.
We ended up seeing 6 churches because one was under reconstruction.

The Basilica Santa Maria Glorious dei Frari had the lovely Tizian's Presentation at the temple, Tizian's Assumption and Sculpture of Canova's grave, and Bellini's Tryptic painting.

Santa Maria Dei Carmini had the Veronese's Holy Family with St John and Tintoretto's Presentation at the Temple
Santa Maria Della Salute had the amazing frescoes of Tizian

Church of St Sebastian had the great works by Veronese in the sacristy and the Naves of the church, and Tizian amazing altarpiece.

Basilica Dei Santa Giovanni and Paolo had amazing works by Lotto, Bellini, Vivarini and Tirali.
Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta was Ruby's favourite with the amazing inlaid marble sculptures with the lovely green and white and the fluidity of the work.

Lastly Church of Madonna dell Orto had the wonderful Tintoretto frescoes.
It's really hard to pick a favourite for me as I liked them all but if I had to pick it would be the Church of St Sebastian.

We were in Venice from morning to night and you never tire of this place. In 10 minutes, I had lost count of how many bridges we had crossed. I was really glad that Ruby's knees were good despite all the ups and downs of steps that we did. Getting to all the churches required us to walk the length and breadth of group of islands, missing the touristic area of St Mark's Square. We walked along the southern Venice Lagoon, and north overlooking Murano Island.
The walk in the evening along the Grand Canal from sunset was just the most relaxing and romantic period when the crowds had mostly gone.
