      Der malerische Beginenhof von Lier

      Der malerische Beginenhof gehört seit 1998 zum Unesco-Weltkulturerbe.

      Es ist ein typischer Straßenbeginenhof aus dem 13. Jahrhundert mit 11 engen Gassen und 162 Häusern. Die Eingangstüren der Häuser tragen den Namen eines Heiligen oder sind mit einer Bibelszene versehen. Die meisten Häuser stammen aus dem 17.-18. Jahrhundert. Einige öffnen sich zu typischen Innenhöfen und Toren.

      Ursprünglich wurden die Häuser von Beginen bewohnt: alleinstehende, gläubige Frauen, die dort ein eigenständiges Leben unter der Leitung einer „Grootjuffrouw“ (Vorsteherin) führen konnten. Sie legten das Gelöbnis der Keuschheit und Gehorsamkeit, aber nicht der Armut ab. Sie bestritten ihren Lebensunterhalt durch Weben, Spitzenklöppeln oder Sticken. Sie konnten den Beginenhof jederzeit verlassen, nur abends und am Sonntag blieben die Tore geschlossen. Im Jahr 1994 starb Agnes, die letzte Begine von Lier.      Leia mais

      Stadtspaziergang und Mittagessen in Lier

      Nach unseren Erfahrungen mit etwas größeren Städten ficken wir uns eher kleinere, überschaubarer heraus. Erste Station: Lier, am Ufer von Kleiner und Großer Nete gelegen, wird es wegen seiner zahlreichen Wasserwege »Venedig des Kempenlandes« genannte. Bereits 1212 erhielt Lier das Stadtrecht. Hier heirateten 1496 Philipp der Schöne und Johanna von Kastilien, die Eltern von Kaiser Karl V., dem Begründer eines Weltreiches von Flandern bis in die Neue Welt.

      Die Zeiten großer Viehmärkte und des Tuchhandels sind längst vergangen. Heute mutet Lier ein wenig verschlafen an. Auf dem Marktplatz ragt der schlanke, gotische Belfried (1369) empor. Alte Zunfthäuser wie das barocke Haus »Der Eichenbaum« säumen den Markt. Kostbarster Kirchenschatz der nahe gelegenen hochgotischen St. Gummaruskirche (1425-1540) ist der silberne Reliquienschrein des heiligen Gummarus (1642).

      Liebhaber außergewöhnlicher Uhren werden beim Besuch des Zimmerturms und -pavillons von den Arbeiten Louis Zimmers (1888-1970), der astronomischen Weltuhr und der Jubiläumsuhr, fasziniert sein.      Leia mais

      Ce matin, la pluie…. Donc nous sommes allés faire un tour à IKEA ! Puis nous nous déplaçons jusqu’à Lierre, petite ville de caractère entourée de canaux. Vidange, puis visite de la ville.

      Ce soir, nous avons besoin de calme donc nous nous déplaçons vers Fort Koningshooikt, un espèce de Fort entouré d’eau.      Leia mais

      Altro piacevole centro storico con l’ufficio turistico più bello del mondo e bagni extralusso

      Lier è una cittadina che presenta diversi aspetti turistici rilevanti, tra cui:

      La chiesa gotico-fiammeggiante di Sint Gommarus, che conserva numerose opere d'arte;
      Il Beghinaggio, ovvero il quartiere chiuso tipico delle Fiandre dove vivevano le beghine;
      Il Museum Wuyts van Campen en Baron Caroly, con arredi del XVIII secolo e opere di Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain, Jan Steen ed Antoon van Dyck;
      La Grote-Markt, ossia la piazza principale di Lier, con lo Stadhuis e il grande Beffroi patrimonio dell'UNESCO.
      La Zimmertoren: la torre che ospita l'orologio astronomico realizzato dall'orologiaio e astronomo Zimmer (nativo di Lier). Oggi è il vero simbolo della cittadina.

      Officially - my second best Best Western

      After the grimness of Fort Breendonk, something uplifting was needed. You can't beat climbing a big tower. Well, I guess you could if you had a dodgy knee and maybe if the temp wasn't hovering around 30. Still it's what I do. Mechelen has a cathedral with a big tower you can climb and it was about a half way point so all was good. 500 steps later & all was sweaty. Great views of Antwerp to the North & Brussels to the South. You could even see the Atomium sparkling in the sunlight. Got me thinking - take a detour there while sun's out just in case - cheer me up. Lunch first & impeccable choice of spec in the middle of a dual carriageway - it was shady & there was grass. It wasn't as busy & as noisy as it sounds. A little more on the hoof navigating - detour added around 4 miles. Atomium good to go. It was a very impressive sight - the queues and bustle not so much. Get in early tomorrow. Off to the hotel and Antwerp doesn't have a hold on demon cobbles. Nice Aircon & room to myself. Quick shower & explore. The imperial Belgians didn't skimp on their capital. The Grand Place is very grand. Unfortunately a sunny Saturday evening prompted grand crowds.Leia mais

      Bella e suggestiva la cattedrale.abbiamo mangiato al ristorante a Vaiano sì lunga attesa in attesa della cena bel centro storico

      La cattedrale di San Rombaldo con la sua alta e possente torre campanaria, venne eretta a partire dal 1217 in forme gotiche secondo la variante brabantina di cui costituisce un vero capolavoro.
      il Municipio gotico, che affaccia sulla Grote Markt, è in realtà un complesso di edifici eretti a partire dal 1320: il palazzo del Gran Consiglio, gotico fiammeggiante del 1525, il Breffroi e l'annesso Mercato dei Tessuti.
      La Brusselpoort è l'unica delle dodici porte delle mura che circondavano la città ad essersi salvata dalle demolizioni del XVIII secolo.

      Marvelous Mechelen

      I am pretty well organised to start my trip home tomorrow and so Brigitte suggested we visit the city of Mechelen, about 40 kms from Limal. We have been fortunate with the weather again, although it was cold overnight (1 degree Celsius) it is sunny and will get to about 16 degrees.

      As we have to collect Emma from school today Brigitte decided to drive there, normally we would go by train. We arrived and parked near the huge and impressive Cathedral Saint Rombaut. We then headed to the Grote Markt passing several interesting sculptures and art work on the way. The whole town is very well maintained and just so beautiful.

      There are a number of art and music schools located in the city and it is reflected in the abundance of artistic and cultural activities.

      We spent a couple of hours walking around and then found a lovely restaurant for lunch Huis Van Hoof, where we both had their open sandwiches, Brigitte had sautéed mushrooms and garlic and I chose smoked salmon, omelette and shrimps. Both were delicious. We were also given the most divine amuse bouche of marscqpone, basil, walnut, peppers, fig and tomato - I had to go and thank the chef who was very chuffed with the feedback.

      After lunch we wandered around a little more, we found the site of the old fish market, the music conservatory, the artistic precinct and a stunning sculpture garden, which unfortunately isn’t open on a Monday, but we could see through the gate.

      We made it back in time to collect Emma and then Luc dropped in to say goodbye as did Gui with Pablo. I also got to see Steph when he collected Emma and Luc ended up staying for dinner which was nice.

      I have done 95% of my packing with just a few things still to go in my suitcases. So the journey home begins tomorrow but I am spending a night in London and flying home on Wednesday.

      I have had a wonderful time and as the holiday was so much fun it has whetted my appetite for more travel. Bring on 2024 and more wonderful adventures.      Leia mais

      Stipvisite in Mechelen

      In Mechelen einen Parkplatz zum Übernachten zu finden, ist gar nicht so leicht. Park4Night zeigt gar nichts und so versuchen wir unser Glück und dringen dabei bis ins Herzen der wunderschönen Stadt vor. Ich bin ganz begeistert und steige zumindest ganz kurz aus, um einige Fotos zu schießen, Letztenendes finden wir außerhalb der Altstadt eine Parklücke in einer ruhigen Anliegerstraße. Was wir noch nicht wissen ist, dass es in den Niederlanden seit 2020 strikt verboten ist, in Wohnmobilen frei zu stehen und zu übernachten, doch es geht alles gut und wir schlafen tief und fest ganz unbehelligt.Leia mais

      Eigentlich ein toller Tag! Immer nur am Fluß entlang, perfektes Wetter und jetzt lecker gegessen und getrunken in einem wirklich schönen kleinen belgischen Ort. Wenn nur der Gegenwind nicht wäre. 106 km nur Gegen Wind, das nervt irgendwann. Egal, es ist vollbracht und ich bin in einem sehr schönen Hotel. Seht selbst😁Leia mais

      Gezelligheid

      En toen was ik opeens niet meer alleen! Terwijl m'n kleren bovenop de tent aan het drogen waren heb ik even gekletst met de nieuwe buurman. Hij fietste vanaf het vakantiehuisje van z'n ouders in Lille naar huis (Oss). Ruim een uur gekletst over van alles en nog wat en echt even gelachen. Toch zomaar nog wat sociaals om deze dag af te sluiten haha! Slaaplekker😘Leia mais
