Der 1. Skitesttag für alle 🎿

      January 28, 2023 in Bulgaria ⋅ ☁️ -4 °C

      I'm on a horse

      July 7, 2018 in Bulgaria ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

I hope you all remember the epic commercial from 'Old spice'? :D That's exactly how I felt today!
Hint for those who can't: https://youtu.be/VX5au0LOJp8

After climbing further 10km up the hill on that sunny morning, I met 'Butch', real name Ognyan, whos owning around 20 horses on his little farm. Some more of his horses are living wildly in the mountains. He has a unique attitude towards nature and knows the mountains like no other. He invited me for coffee, self made herbal tea with self made honey from special pine trees. It felt, as if theres was another time zone, a slower one. The horses are well trained and strong and the film 'Vikings' and many others have been produced with his horses.

I decided to try a tour on a horseback. Was a bit unsure if it might be counterproductive for my back but it turned out to be supportive.

So, we rode a tour trough the forest and steep ski slopes. Fantastic experience and sceneries and I can only agree with with the other peoples feedback to it. If you're ever here try: http://www.horse-riding-bg.com

Also, we were really lucky with the weather as it startet to rain as we returned. I just made it to my apartment when weather turned into apocalyptic thunderstorm and electricity went down for a while.

During afternoon, I prepared for hiking to the top tomorrow and hoping for good enough weather!

      Endlich Schnee ❄

      January 26, 2023 in Bulgaria ⋅ ❄️ -2 °C

      Borovets Ski Resort, Bulgaria

      December 4, 2023 in Bulgaria ⋅ ☀️ 2 °C

Accidental admin week. We arrived at the Ski resort to discover that the information I was relying on was wrong about the beginning of the ski season. The resort is practically deserted with only 2 restaurants open and some workers preparing for the beginning of the season. Which is in 2 weeks’ time! 🤦‍♂️

So admin week it is with no distractions. The occasional outdoor adventure to save going crazy.

After travelling now for over five months you certainly value time in one place. The first 4 days were perfect admin days where we finally found a groove and made some good progress. Jessie has been making big headways into the development of her website and I finally got to a point in my journal where I could start contributing travel guide articles! This is the exact reason we both needed to get out of Sydney. None of this would have ever happened had we kept doing this in our “spare time” around full-time jobs.

Plus it finally snowed on the 3rd day! 😂 Thankfully the weather was cold enough for the resort to be running the snow guns each night on the front slopes. By Friday we were well ready for an outdoor adventure and frothing to try get some time on a board.

      Borovets Ski Resort

      February 24, 2021 in Bulgaria ⋅ ☀️ 5 °C

So odd to arrive at a resort... Where bars/restaurants and of course skiing is all open (albeit many asking you to go via the back entrance as they are definitely not supposed to be open)
It's like they hadn't heard about the virus here...Read more

      The Royal Residence Run

      February 13, 2017 in Bulgaria ⋅ ⛅ -7 °C

After we'd sufficiently warmed up, we went back to the slopes for the Royal Residence Run - a long languid green run through the forests, verging on cross country skiing at points. Both of us were slightly concerned after only one corner when we had to de-ski and walk up part of the run - was this a going to be a common feature of this run? Thankfully, not. Whilst there were flat bits, most of it was a gentle slope through the beautiful forests. With enough energy for one more run we hit the Martinovi Baraki 1 blue once more before out muscles just gave up. All the photos and videos are on the GoPro...excellent as it includes one of me embarrasingly nearly stacking it whilst trying to record Ben! They do not include the rather irate fellow whom I annoyed by skiing ahead of him...he seemed rather upset despite the width and flatness of the slope! Importantly, despite this, neither one of us fell or ejected today ☺ An afternoon spent working and relaxing in the hotel, with after dinner beers and a fire. Rather feeling the effects of the cold on my face and my rather ruddy nose this evening! Plans to do the same again tomorrow but going up to the Markudjik centre at the top of the mountain to play on the slopes there before the long Musala Pathway blue back down...all that being based around us being able to move in the morning.Read more

      Days 4 and 5

      February 16, 2017 in Bulgaria ⋅ ☀️ 3 °C

We spent the last two days up at Markudjik again. Yesterday we ran the red Markudjik 2b...well, I ran it. Ben ran some of it, and scooted the rest either sliding sideways on his skis or on his butt! As I wanted for him at the bottom, I offered to take a photo of a family, which turned out to be a Y9 boy from school...! Ben eventually made it down and we ran the bottom section together before heading down the mountain and spening the afternoon relaxing and watching Blacklist.

Today, we went back up again, although spent much of the day falling down. We were running the beautiful blue loop faster and faster...resulting in more than one fall for us both. We made today a short day to get some work done with the intent of being out for longer tomorrow...yet to start the work though!

      Last skiing day

      February 17, 2017 in Bulgaria ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

After a hard afternoon and evening working yesterday, we planned to make the most of our last day skiing. We headed up to Markudjik to start the day with spectacular views, running the blue loop half a dozen times before heading down the Musala Path back to the resort. Then up the Sitnyokovo lift and down the blue we'd not done since Day 1 before finally coming down Martinovi Baraki one last time. Having covered almost all the pistes today, Ben decided he wanted to finished on a red...which we both made a pig's ear of but had fun nonetheless! Tomorrow, we have a half day in Sofia before flying home; until then, relaxing!Read more

      Ski/Snowboarding School

      February 25, 2021 in Bulgaria ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Brace, Sarah and Ant did Snowboarding and I was on my own doing skiing, but due to how quiet the resort is with no tourists, it meant I got 3 days of private lessons!
