    Varna, Sea Garden and Technopolis

    May 29 in Bulgaria ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

Full day in Varna today, starting with a walking tour of the city.

We started at Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin, known as The Cathedral to the locals, interesting because it was built in 1886 with money raised from a public lottery.

We walked the length of the walking street to the Varna Sea Garden, which has multiple walking trails, and just as many beach front bars with sun beds available for hire.

We also visited the Roman Baths, which had a great example of the underfloor heating system in use, and a good series of drawings to envision what was in place in Roman times.

With a free afternoon ahead of us, and our Samsung tablet failing too often for our liking (especially with the Geocaching app 😯), we made the decision to purchase a new one, so we caught the local bus to Technopolis, a Harvey Norman style tech warehouse on the outskirts of town and bought a new Lenovo tablet. Buying an electronic item in Bulgaria... what could go wrong!!

We had a late lunch in the walking street, then time for a visit to the Art Gallery and Sea Garden again in the afternoon (of course both had caches), before having tea in a backstreet pub.

    Nessebar morning, Varna afternoon

    May 28 in Bulgaria ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

We had a free morning in Nessebar, so spent more time wandering the laneways and multitude of churches, as well as the Roman ampitheatre and port. The streets were quiet early but soon got busier when the tourists who stay at Sunny Beach on the mainland, commute across for the day.

The ampitheatre was disappointing compared to Plovdiv, not only in size, but because it's mostly restored in a modern style.

We walked the coast track, ďipped a toe in the Black Sea and bought lunch from a small back street bakery, at a fraction of the cost of the central tourist lane.

We departed for Varna at 2pm, across the Balkan Mountains again, and had a stop for afternoon tea at a roadside bakery. As payback for her trying Vegemite, Nadya insisted we try boza, a fermented wheat drink. It's a Bulgarian breakfast staple, usually with a banitsa (pastry filled with feta cheese), with a pungent odour (like Weetbix Oliver thought), yoghurt consistency and very sweet taste

We arrived in Varna around 5pm, checked in to our hotel, which is on the main walking street and explored the area on foot before having tea at an outdoor eatery in the walking street.

    May 26 in Bulgaria ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Read more

    Tag der Pausen

    August 16, 2018 in Bulgaria ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Day 571: World Heritage Meet Day 2

    September 8, 2018 in Bulgaria ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Another early start, where we went first to the Rock Hewn Churches of Ivanovo. These are 13th century churches, well, hewn out of the rock. Only one of them is open so we went inside that - it's actually about a hundred metres up a cliff and basically hangs out over the car park, so that was a bit exciting! The interior is heavily painted too, just like an orthodox church and was in great condition, all up I really enjoyed the site.

Back to the cars where we headed next for Srebana Nature Reserve, an important bird nesting area and migration point. This had a certain level of infamy as it had the poorest rating of every World Heritage site by the community. Unfortunately our visit isn't going to change anything - the infrastructure was really poor and we couldn't see any birds at all! The lake was a long distance away and almost nothing was visible. It didn't help that we were there in the middle of the day and it was quite hot, so all the birds were hiding!

Finally our last stop was just nearby in a small town whose name I've forgotten. It was an old Roman tomb from about the third century AD, so an early Christian work. The interior was brightly painted and decorated, though the tomb itself was never actually used. We had a guided tour and were generously allowed to snap some photos which was quite nice! This one's only a tentative site though, so I didn't have to worry about doing a video. The other videos I've managed to work around the group, though the sites have generally been quite small and I'll do some voiceovers to cover the gaps.

And with that, our meet up was basically done! We all shook hands and went our separate ways, though we gave a couple of people a lift back to Varna. One of them was an older English guy who'd visited about 850 world heritage sites and is ranked #2 for sites visited, while the other was a Swiss gent who had visited every country in the world and about 750 World Heritage sites. Was good to chat with them and swap stories; also a little humbling as well since it reminds us how far we have to go!

Exhausted we arrived back at our lovely apartment in Varna. We'd booked it for four nights including the night we stayed in Ruse, though we brought all of our luggage with us. Very tired, we couldn't manage anything more than frozen pizzas for dinner!

    13. Übernachtung

    June 7, 2017 in Bulgaria ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

By the way: Richtung Warna bin ich auch die ersten 20 Kilometer Autobahn gefahren.

    14. Übernachtung

    June 8, 2017 in Bulgaria ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Mal sehen...Read more
