Day 6: Carl “Reefer Engineer” On Patrol

      December 28, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

We met Carl from Norway yesterday in the Explorers lounge on deck 8. Today, while waiting to embark on Deck 1 - Carl was on his morning patrol checking the entire ship’s humidity levels. Looking for visual signs of condensation, as well as, using his own senses to ensure we are; Not to cold - Not to hot - that we are - Just right.

The waiters, our room stewards, and our bartenders are all pretty much much customer facing staff. They get all the glory.

Being a retired IT person from 25 years at Yale - I know what it is like to be behind the scenes.

So, tonight when you tuck yourself in bed - say a “Good night and thank you” to Carl and all the other behind the scenes Viking Neptune Staff who are keeping us feeling “Just right.”

      Petite journée mais longue soirée

      July 17, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

Cartagena and a taste of Colombia

      January 30, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

At first I really wanted to make the trip from Panama to Colombia by boat ( visiting San Blas Islands for 3-5 days) but after calling every known agency I realized that, like so many things, it has changed its status in the last couple of years from “alternative travel” to “I have money and I am European backpacker who wants to look like I am traveling alternatively on my Instagram”.

Why hatred? Well, most of the amazing remote places that I like to visit are now crawling with people because it is mentioned somewhere as a must thing to do. And everybody stays everywhere for a day, two or three and is seen as a quick ATM withdrawal by the local people. In all that mess, it’s getting harder and harder to see the uniqueness of the place. I am not talking about amazing landscape sights that are usually used to lure the tourists in. I am talking about meeting local family that will tell you which traditional meal you have to try or an old abuela that will tell you the whole story about when the road in front of you was constructed.

Cartagena was one of those overcrowded places but still an intense contrast to Panama. People smiling and dancing all day long with amazingly beautiful face features and athletic bodies. Colombia, where have you been all my life?

I joined Getsemani walking tour, which is an artsy neighborhood with street art, caffès, bars and clubs. The place underwent a substantial change in the last years and went from drug-selling ghetto to a must-visit and one of the safest places to be in Cartagena.

The rest of the city I discovered by myself or with other travelers. Even though everything was adjusted to tourism, you could still sense that there was a regular local city flow just beneath the curtain of overpriced tours. An example: people sitting on a chair with typing machines in front of them, offering to type your contracts and agreements in order to make them valid in the court. Another example: I went to a supermarket in the local neighborhood and 6 bananas, 1/2kg lemons, a deodorant, almond milk, sanitary pads and 300g of brownies costed 4$

      Hash Cruise – Cartagena, Colombia

      March 16, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Gockel Stumper and Tight Lips took on the flour bag for this most excellent trail through the old city. They not only led us through the city, they actually placed four hundred thousand little chalk “Photo Checks” everywhere we should take a photo. 😊 Trail was explained as 4.5 miles for runners, and 2.5 miles for walkers. I don’t know how far the walkers walked, but I know I ran 6.5 miles . . . so it was a good day.

Trail started with a wander through a bird park, then out into the ville. We eventually ended up about 2 miles away in a park that . . . you guessed it, more bird viewing. It was HOT, but we managed to fined several cases of cold beer and drag them over for all to enjoy. By the time circle was over, we had just enough time to walk the 2 miles back to the ship, before we were underway once again. On On to the next port . . . Aruba.

      Cartagenas Altstadt

      November 23, 2022 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

      November 22, 2022 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

      Colombia Day 19

      August 14, 2018 in Colombia ⋅ 🌧 82 °F

An overcast morning but off we go for our "beach" day to the islands. There are tons of boats that do beach trips every day but Flavia helped us find one that was less expensive than some and sent us pictures of the location which looked lovely. Took a taxi to the port and joined the hundreds of other vacationers off to the island beaches. "Our" island was a small island, Islabela, about an hour speed boat ride away. Got there by 10AM and it was lovely. Our boat held about 40 so we had the entire island for the day. Lovely setting with our own cabana and chairs and a lovely spot in the Caribbean to swim right in front of us. We were waited on for drinks as well. I had forgotten how much I like Mojitos which I had not had since I was in Cuba. They are excellent here as they are made with yerba buena instead of mint for a more subtle flavor.
They had massages, snorkeling, and other activities as well. Lunch of grilled fish and rice included. Just lounged around, took a nap and swam whenever we wanted. A great relaxing day. Back to the mainland by 4PM and back to our bnb. Some catch up time and out to the plaza about 100m from our place for our last dinner together.
A lazy day and my last in this wonderful spot in the world.
I leave tomorrow night for home. ML and Robert going on to Minca, a town outside of Santa Marta in the jungle with great bird watching and jungle hikes. Wish I was going there as well but time to get home for camping next week - maybe depending on the fire situation.
A walk after dinner for ice cream, coconut for me. Their coconut ice cream is chock full of coconut - coco palms everywhere around here.

      Arrivée a Carthagène

      March 20, 2022 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C
