      Lost place walk

      21. januar 2020, Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

      On the move

      27. april, Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

In the morning, the dust storm had settled down, and we headed out to the Nubian museum, which was really interesting. Managed to catch our Felucca back from the museum to our cruise boat. It was great. I could’ve spent hours just sailing around on this small craft on the Nile. Then we visited the spice markets picked up some local produce. Then back to our cruise ship, Princess of the Nile to start our journey down the Nile to Luxor. Amazing scenery and a top deck where we could completely relax. Then a night time stop at the temple of Kom Ombo - a very unusual temple as it’s dedicated to two Gods, Sobek (crocodile god) and Horus. A beer on the top deck finish to the day beautifully.Les mer

      Sunday. Temple of Hathor

      29. mai 2022, Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 106 °F

Had police escort. Visited the Temple of Hathor (Goddess of love, motherhood). Also the most colorful of all temples in Egypt. First century AD. Ceilings were gorgeous.

      FINALLY Cleopatra is here.

It was 109 degrees. We walked up the stairs (circular as the way a falcon flies) then down another set of stairs straight down (as crow flies). As everything in Egypt has a meaning.

We are touching the wall of negativity. If you touch it, it pulls all negativity away.

Farewell reception tonight. Leave early am tomorrow for Cairo.

      Karnak Temples

      24. mai 2023, Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Another early start to beat the heat (41 forecast) and the crowds. We explored the vast houses of the gods, Karnak temples, built over a period of some 200 years over 3500 years ago!! Even more amazing than the huge columns, statues, and temples is the reconstruction that is continuing today. Back at the cruise ship for lunch and a refreshing swim in the sundeck pool.Les mer

      Luxor

      26. april, Egypt ⋅ ⛅ 39 °C

Up ridiculously early as the temperature will be 42 today and we are heading to Abu Simbel. Magnificent temple of Ramses II and his wife did not disappoint. Another huge structure which was moved away from the waters of the dam by the efforts UNESCO and the Egyptian government. Back in Aswan, we checked on our boat “The Nile Princess” which remained docked for the evening. The plan was to go on a Felucca (a traditional Egyptian sailing boat) and then to the spice markets, but we were stopped by dust storm.Les mer

      The struggle is real!

      12. desember 2022, Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

They are pressed to sell you any and everything here. Even to the point of pulling up next to our ship and throwing a bag of stuff on board for people to buy. I heard someone shouting “Cousin! Cousin!” outside my window and when I looked outside I saw these guys on a boat.Les mer

    • Day 1 - Sailing Up the Nile

      22. desember 2022, Egypt ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

The big day has arrived for our sailing trip up the Nile!

Eleven people were picked up in Luxor and we were driven 50 km south to Esna, where our Dahabiya sailboat, the Loulia, is moored. We are sailing on the Nile for four days from Esna to Aswan on this beautiful boat.

A Dahabiya is an old-fashioned, Victorian, 2 sail sailboat that has 4 cabins and 2 suites, so room for 12 people. These are the same sailing vessels used during the nineteenth century by many archeologists, who counted on them as sailing houses, and even royalty who viewed them as the most comfortable way to tour the Nile. We were advised to travel up the Nile rather than down so that we could actually sail. If there isn’t a wind, the boat is towed by a tugboat. I think that there are at least 8 crew members, a cook, Mohamed, and the guide, Abdullah.

The plumbing and water filtration systems are good. During the day, when we aren’t visiting a site, we can curl up in a corner on the deck to read, talk to others, play games or just watch the scenery. All meals are provided and the food comes from farmers and markets on the way. What luxury.

So who are we travelling with? Our Egyptologist guide, Abdullah, who studied the history of Egypt at the university of Alexandria for 7 years. A Dutch vice principal and her mechanic husband, Marit and Chris. Two lawyers from Brooklyn Hilary and Sal and their two delightful teenage daughters, Anna and Sarah. A French gynaecologist Silvie, and her two daughters, Johanna and Emily as well as one daughter’s husband, Ahmed, who is Egyptian. So an eclectic mix.

Before setting out, we walked a short distance to the Esna Temple of Khnum. A short while ago work was done on this temple to clean the walls and ceilings. Archaeologists were amazed to find that under all the dust, dirt and soot there were vividly painted coloured figures that covered the walls, columns and ceiling. Backgrounds were left white. Archaeologists had long believed that the colours had been lost to time.

Returning to the boat we walked through the bustling local market. It is actually overcast and quite cold today, maybe 6C. It is the first day that we haven’t had the sun. We needed our jackets and a couple layers today.

We were supposed to sail to El Kab and Qessia today but there was a sandstorm there so we moored on the banks of the river and did a walkabout around a little farming village. The kids loved entertaining us by singing, showing us their bikes and trying to speak English.

Our lunch and dinner were delicious and gave us all an opportunity to get to know each other a bit.

Day 4: Abu Serga Coptic Church & Board

      19. juni 2023, Egypt ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

We visited the Coptic Church where there is the cave, where the Holy family (Virgin Mary and the Christ) hid during their journey in Egypt, fleeing Roman persecution. We visited several churches, Kanayes Masr El Adeema’ which literally translates to the churches of Old Egypt or Old Cairo including the Hanging Church, the Church of Saint Barbara, the Church of Saint George and its monastery, as well as the Church of Abu Serga. The church of Abu Serga there is a cave where it is believed that the well where the family of Jesus drank from still produces water.

We checked into our cabin and loved our suite with a balcony and french balcony.

We then look a flight to Luxor where we board the Ama Delhi...found our cabin and loved it. The Hotel Manager, Farik arranged for a surprise congratulations for Riley for her graduation not knowing it wasn't until next year....we played along.

Nile Cruise 2; Edfu to Luxor

      25. november 2022, Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

We leave Edfu at about 8am; Intrepid trepid Travel tours do not visit Edfu Temple for ethical reasons, but that does stop the other tour groups making a short and rushed visit.

There are excellent views from the top deck, where we relax for the morning until we reach Esna. Here there are two barrages that act as bridges over the Nile; just before reaching them many small boats come to the ship and throw their wares up in the hope that they will be inspected and purchased, since cruise ships do not stop here. Each barrage has a lock to allow vessels to pass through.

We cruise on to Luxor, arriving at 3:30 pm; we dock close to the magnificent Temple of Luxor and disembark.

      Impressions

      5. februar 2023, Egypt ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C
