Day 502: Suomenlinna FortressJuly 1, 2018 in Finland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C
Only one world heritage site in Helsinki - Suomenlinna Fortress! It's a fortress on a group of islands pretty much in the harbour of Helsinki, and date back to when Sweden controlled Finland. The designs were heavily inspired by Vauban, the military engineer whose work we'd encountered in France.
So up we got, tram down to the harbour and then a ferry out to the islands which are popular as a day trip for locals as well. Plenty of turrets, bastions and walls to look at and film in front on, but lots of buildings and tunnels to explore as well. We had a great day wandering around in the sun, and had a nice salmon soup from the cafe for lunch as well. This basically took up the whole day!Read more
