    Day 502: Suomenlinna Fortress

    July 1, 2018 in Finland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Only one world heritage site in Helsinki - Suomenlinna Fortress! It's a fortress on a group of islands pretty much in the harbour of Helsinki, and date back to when Sweden controlled Finland. The designs were heavily inspired by Vauban, the military engineer whose work we'd encountered in France.

So up we got, tram down to the harbour and then a ferry out to the islands which are popular as a day trip for locals as well. Plenty of turrets, bastions and walls to look at and film in front on, but lots of buildings and tunnels to explore as well. We had a great day wandering around in the sun, and had a nice salmon soup from the cafe for lunch as well. This basically took up the whole day!

    Suomenlinna - Helsinki

    December 21, 2017 in Finland ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

Today we took the Ferry to a local Island Suomenlinna Sea Fortress where we spent quite a few hours just walking around checking out all the fortifications. Suomenlinna was founded in 1748 on a cluster of islands off the coast of Helsinki. The fortifications and garrison buildings have been restored and converted into residential properties for 800 residents , studios, offices, cafes and museums. We had lunch in a little cafe in the Russian merchants quarter. Back on the mainland we then rode the tram around the city to a Rock Church which is a church built in 1969 of solid rock. We then went back to Senate Square for dinner I had the Russian Borscht soup and John a homemade hotdog. We also went into Stockman's department store to purchase some gingerbread as it was voted the best gingerbread in Europe.Read more

    Suomenlinna - Festungsinsel

    July 16, 2017 in Finland ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C
