      Hautvillers und Kathedrale in Reims

      July 26, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Read more

      Reims

      August 22, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Read more

      Verzy 15 miles

      July 31, 2023 in France ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

Strange things, feet. Yesterday I was pretty happy with progress and it was a 22 mile day. Today, just 15 miles, so why are they about as sore as they have ever been? This isn’t the sort of pain from blisters which you get when pressing on the blister, this is the sort of pain you get inside the foot when you take your weight off it. It can come on hours after you have stopped walking. Suspect that part of the problem is my shoes. Very lightweight and great for road walking. But walking on small stones is not so good. Think I am bruising the soles of my feet. Very tender.

Day of two halves. After a keek in Reims cathedral the rest of the morning was spent walking along beside a canal. In the afternoon I was up in rolling hills, through vineyards, on small, stony paths. Ouch.

Met the usual “shop shut for annual holidays” stuff today and I think it will be increasingly common for shops, bars, cafes and restaurants. Just to add variety, tonight’s accommodation is in a small village with one restaurant which is closed today because it is a Monday. At least there was a small grocer where I bought a slab of mediocre lasagne.

I was warned that tomorrow’s village doesn’t have any shops so I have bought a tin of Ravioli to carry all day and then at least I will have some tea.

I nearly had company tonight. Apparently, a lady phoned this morning and booked but then phoned back later and cancelled. There appears to only be one bedroom which has a double bed and a camp bed. My hostess said that I have to use the camp bed because I am only paying a pilgrim rate. So, was this lady going to be using the double bed? Seems very chummy to me. Maybe she had second thoughts about it also. But really is it that much different than a mixed dormitory and they are not unusual?

      Zweiter Stopp in Chamery

      February 3, 2023 in France

      Moin Leute,

Heute 324 Kilometer in ca. 5 Std.

      Morgen geht's weiter Richtung Paris.

Stage 23: Beaumont sur Vesle to Condé

      May 12, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

Stage 23: Beaumont sur Vesle to Condé sur Marne

Because I had to go off-track yesterday to find a place to sleep, this morning I had to walk about an hour just to get to the starting point of the VF.

Luckily (!) I bought a baguette from the vending machine, because in Condé sur Marne all I could find to eat were eggs from another vending machine. I keep a stash for situations like this, so today I ate half the baguette with dried tuna, a chocolate bar and Prince biscuits. I’ll eat the other half, with dried chicken, while I walk tomorrow. If I had been more on the ball I would have stocked up on fruits, nuts, etc., before leaving Reims!

The day was very, very misty. No rain and minimal puddles. I walked through fields of grapes that will become champagne. The vines are just starting to bud, and I would have liked to see them closer to harvest time. I tried to take photos, but the mist obscured most of the vines.

I had heard years ago that champagne grapes thrive in chalky, clay soil. That means that a lot of the paths are white (chalk) and extremely slippery (clay). I’ll probably take the rubber tips off my walking sticks tomorrow. Because of the mist my hiking shoes are soggy again.

After leaving Verzy I entered a huge stand of beech trees. Very, very green! I was unnerved for some reason about going through it alone, but I tag teamed via text with my Camino friend Bob (thank you, Bob!) so I didn’t freak out.

The VF is very different from the Camino in many ways. What I am finding most notable on the VF is the solitude. For sixteen days now I have seen nobody on the VF during the day. Same for most evenings. A couple times I have come across pilgrims in the evenings (Hello, Andrew!) but on the actual walk I have seen nobody. Today, for example, I walked for seven hours and saw three men about 300 yards away working in the fields. That was it. I rarely see people in the villages I walk through, but that happened a lot on the Camino, too.

The beech stand eventually turned into vineyards and farmland, and I later ended up walking along the canal until I came to Condé sur Marne.

      A good day. Obviously.

      Reims doesn’t fail to impress

      September 12, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

What a gorgeous city, slow paced and beautiful. Loulou and Beth up early and off for a reconnaisance walk to suss the area out. They found the cathedral and how close we are to everything, and came back to tell us all about it. After a quick bite we were off, searching for coffee and looking at clothes shop, and yes we have helped the economy very slightly (baggage weight issues). Beautiful buildings everywhere, people are friendly, pleasantish temperature.
So today was Louise’s day-she wanted to do the champagne places - so she was tour director for the day 🤪.
Couldn’t believe it when we saw a place called Eden Park so of course the two rugby nuts needed a pic.
We had a superb lunch at a wee place in town -the biggest Cos Salad you have seen in your life for most of the party, I had this gorgeous ham salad on like a pastry bun, delicious. A lovely bottle of Rose went down nicely, then the rain came…. and I mean it poured for about 20 mins…. cooled the temp down rather well too.
Conductor Kiely had us catching a bus and off we went to Veuve Cliquot… no tour times available but it was a great photo opportunity.
A walk up a hill 😵‍💫 and along the way, we came across the most marvellous Vranken Pommery Champagne House. Wow what a place, what a story about an amazing woman Jeanne-Alexandrine Pommery who after becoming a widow at an early age, took the world by storm introducing their champagnes. She is know as a true trailblazer, the basis for luxury product promotion: the style, the brand, the communication and public relations. She invented the image of the Pommery Brand.
The vineyards are built on top of Chalk quarries/Pits and it took more than 10 years to build the exterior buildings, plant 25 hectares of vineyards and dig the 18km of interconnected galleries that link the 69 chalk pits to one another.
We went down the 116 steps to the cellar, and OMG there in front of us were all of these artworks displayed. Breathtakingly spectacular, utilising the chalk pits to highlight the art. I was gobsmacked. The temperature was amazing 30 metres underground, perfect temperature for the champagne to mature within the bottles. We all absolutely loved the experience and were so please Loulou had insisted we do it. We got a complementary glass of champagne at the end and it is quite delicious.
The walk back up the 116 steps after our goat climbing a couple of days (well for Beth and I) was challenging on the knees and back and we are paying for it.
Anyhoo we hopped back on a bus and off we went….allllll over the city… end of the work day dropping off all of the locals at their neighbourhoods and after about 30 mins we alighted and made our way home. Time for a rest then off out for a bite to eat.
Have to say so far we haven’t really had the best experience with service or food but hoping to improve.
Look up the Pommery Champagne - its bloody interesting.

Lots of photos today cos its all just so amazing…from just walking around, the pictures of nuns are from the bathroom where we had lunch - to the champagne houses… and that Art! wow…Pommery collection I will add to another post cos they won’t fit

      Santé ! 🍾🥂

      April 19, 2022 in France ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Champagne has always been my choice of poison (that and the quest to find the world's best Cosmopolitan), so the real reason for our trip begins today. A bucketlist to visit some of the best Champagne houses in the Champagne region!

We hired a car from Paris and spent the next couple of days between Reims and Epernay visiting around 8 Champagne houses and popping in to few more. Hundreds of kilometers of underground Cavès and thousands of hectares of vineyards go into supplying the globe with 350 million bottles of bubbly a year. At some houses we were 30 metres underground in 10 degree chalk pit caves and saw where century old bottles of champagne are still kept.

Pictures just don't do it justice. The buildings and architecture are breathtakingly beautiful, second only to the golden nectar that we tasted!

First up, Pommery (where I shrunk Karl) and one of my all time favorites, Taittinger 🇨🇵

      Reimes

      August 28, 2019 in France ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Read more

      Champagne & Cathedrals, Part 1

      August 17, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Last night’s arrival into Reims felt quite late. Finally arrived at my rented apartment around 10pm. I pretty much collapsed at that point after about 36 hours of travel. But today was spent indulging in the finest Reims has to offer! My first stop was Champagne Ruinart - a wonderful tour les by Amandine. Smart, funny, a fantastic guide. Amazingly, and for the only time on this trip, the group was all Americans. After leaving Ruinart, I grabbed a quick lunch - the French can make a sandwich! Baguette, lettuce, tomato, a bit of tuna, and sliced hard boiled egg! Amazing! I toured the St Remi Basilica. Massive and beautiful! From there I visited Veuve Clicquot! Is there anything more inviting that that beautiful yellow?? I bought a stupid and heavy souvenir, but I love it. I had planned to visit Pommery, but the champagne was too heavy, so I returned to the apartment before making my 2mile walk to GH Mumm (pronounced Moom). Good tour, but excellent tasting! The Mumm RSRV is fantastic! I quickly made my way down to Notre Dame de Reims - a cathedral larger than Notre Dame de Paris and where many of France’s king were coronated. I collapsed back at the apartment after a quick run to the grocery store! More tomorrow!Read more
